Fan Space: Week of March 3-9, 2025

Hi Beanies! We’re experimenting with a next gen Open Thread, as some of you have asked for more chat space on a different day/time zone.

Our hope is that this will be a happy place thread that’s active all week long for chatting, sharing feels, and doing all the things we drama fans do.

Treasure hunt: an alternate reality exists. But your memory got wiped out, and you no longer remember that alternate reality.
I vaguely remember a space where we could write anything we wanted, add pictures, gifs, links etc.

The parallel universe may still exist! 🙂
I clicked on some notifications this morning... and managed to sneak to Fanwall that doesn't exist in our universe anymore...
(These little openings may close soon though, I guess.... ).

And just like that, the fanwall is really gone. I checked at 12:03am PST, it was still there. Now it's gone 💔

The numbers of comments and likes don't seem to change after the wall is gone.

I am greatful for the header photo. And frankly these sneak peeks into the now deprecated Fanwall. Just a hurt / comfort feeling about things past and the hope that uri Fanwall still exists in another universe. ✨ 💖

You're not misremembering, and you can see the rotating headers here for nostalgia's sake. https://dramabeans.com/about-old/headers/

@panshel

Yes, that’s it. Wow what a time capsule .

5

Thank you for sharing @panshel 🫰🏻 Today this blast from the past is making me cry. 🥺🥺🥺🥺

Good days ... and more good days to come. Aja, aja, hwaiting Dramabeans!! 💪🏻✊🏻🙌🏻

7

@panshel Thank you for the link. I finally know what show the bottom picture comes from. It's "Athena: Goddess of War".

4

Nope, @johnb... You're right. Thank you, @panshel, for the link to the rotating headers. What a blast from the past. ;)

5

Thanks for sharing it, @panshel !

Wow, I had missed so many good headers!

@Isagc The first header is not Hyun Bin but YSY, right?

3

@claire2009

They got the wrong names on the 6 first ones.

I don't think he's YYS neither. But I can't put a name on this face >_<

2

@kurama I meant Yoon Shiyoon, not Yeon Yooseok. Yes they got it wrong.
#2 is it Lee Minjung?
#3 is So Jisub I think.
#4 and #5 I can't tell.
#6 I think it's Moon Geunyoung?

3

@claire2009

Oh, I don't know. I thought maybe Jang Geun-suk?

#4 I think it's The Slave Hunters
#5 Hyun Bin?

2

@claire2009

I'm quite sure Yoon Shi Yoon is the one wearing the mask in the first header.

And there is another header for him.

3

@claire2009

I have just seen all the headers and there are several of Yoon Shi Yoon.
And in the first header I think he is the one wearing the mask. But I'm not sure if the other one is Hyun Bin or someone else.

3

@claire2009 @isagc
Definitely not Hyun Bin. The shape of the face and the chin, and the eyelids remind me of Lee Soo Hyuk?

3

#1 looks like Jung Yong-hwa?
#5 left is Lee Seung-gi and righ is Hyun Bin?

2

Oh #1 is Yoon Shi-yoon, found the picture

Oh, so that's a higher level? I did not know, so No screenshot :( :)

2

I think @claire2009 was referring to was the reduction in our comments numbers when people were deleting their fan wall posts. We were concerned that when the fan wall disappeared we would see levels change as a result of thousands of comments being removed at once.

3
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

Yes that's what I meant, @pakalanapikake . When I deleted my posts manually before the fanwall deletion, I saw my number of comments drop accordingly (the number of likes never dropped though), and other beanies also saw their number of comments drop because of my posts' deletion (if they commented on my posts). So we expected our number of comments to drop after yesterday, but it didn't happen. I should have only ~1300+ comments now but the total count still shows my ~5000 comments on the fanwall.

Actually if I click on my DB bookmarks, they still take me to the posts, but there's no reply button. I wonder once everything is really gone if the comment count will drop then?

@Reply1988 I levelled up to Loan shark with a heart of gold just yesterday.

[reply to Healer's moved here for more room]

@claire2009 Healer's, plus @reply1988 Mother Bean, @mazarin Neolttwigi,
Ah so... I had a feeling that the Data-Beans might freeze the counters when the fanwall was cut loose, so as not to sink the final "historical" fanwall Beanie Levels across the board.

I refrained from manually deleting any post so that the entire content of my fanwall would return to the Great Bitbucket in the Sky in one glorious shot. (Such a drama queen...) But also with an eye to avoid disrupting other Beanies’ totals in the process.

* dislocates shoulder while patting self on back *

When I logged on before noon today, my Beanie Level still read Contract girlfriend, and Total Comments stood at 15,007; Thumbs Up Received: 23,864. At the moment I cannot compare these stats to the fanwall backup @mary so kindly made for me as it is on another computer. But I do recall that comments were in the high 14-thousands.

In comparison, fellow Contract girlfriend @mary stood at Total Comments: 6,240; Thumbs Up Received: 17,641. She reached Contract girlfriend well before I did... so I am puzzled. Unless it is a result of Beanies deleting their own fanwalls and comments prior to the cutover. Ouch.

Meanwhile, leading “Big Kahuna” Sicarius (Beanie Level: Top Star’s underappreciated manager) registered as of her final post just before the fanwall stopped – Total Comments: 30,611; Thumbs Up Received: 122,267, when I took a peek just before commencing to write this post...

... simply to get a handle on how DB is operating post-fanwall.

So what’s the big deal? The Beanie Levels were/are all in good fun. I initially had no idea they even existed until after I had blathered enough online. “Jang Geu-rae” (protagonist of MISAENG) was a real head-scratcher – because at the time I only watched sageuks. ;)

Omo! It’s a miracle! Beanie levels actually rose after the fanwall went poof! This is great! So maybe there will still be some kind of tracking of Beanie brownie points going forward. Congratulations to all hands who have moved up.

* cue immortal theme song from THE JEFFERSONS *

Don’t we all, @claire2009 Healer’s?! And now “El Condor Pasa” by Simon & Garfunkel is playing in my head. Thanks for the earworm! ;)

BTW, for some reason, I wasn’t aware of the DB bookmark function. Shows how much I paid attention to my profile settings, etc. Probably just as well. It would have been one more thing for me to spazz over during this DB overhaul. Which was nerve-wracking enough.

Aja! Aja! Hwaiting, DramaBeans and Beanies everywhere!

2

DB has no bookmark function, Midnight.
I just bookmarked the links I want to keep in Safari browser.

2

@claire2009

Yes, that's what I did with my precious tag index page and now the comments page.

4

But also with an eye to avoid disrupting other Beanies’ totals in the process

I was really short-sighted in this respect.
Also at a time, DB fanwall was really slow in loading if it loaded at all, so I deleted my posts that had many pictures, thinking it would reduce the load, albeit very minimally, on the server.

About beanie levels, beanies level up to the same level at very different stats, so the theory that makes the most sense is @reply1988 's, that it has very little to do with N# of comments and likes, but with the traffic flow each comment/post draws in.

4
4
reply

Required fields are marked *

@clair2009 Healer's -- re: beanie levels

I suspect that one way of measuring the traffic flow is via Thumbs Up Received. There is, however, no count of Thumbs Up Bestowed. Sometimes I wonder whether that could be a factor in leveling up as well. I tend to be quite liberal with Thumbs Up to encourage fellow Beanies, especially newcomers.

In the end, it is a tantalizing mystery. ;)

Please don't feel bad about pruning your fanwall posts. You did what you had to do. The whole site was groaning under the load, like it was dragging its anchor. It is smooth sailing now.

4

@pakalanapikake ‘It is smooth sailing now’👈🏾 we will have to wait to see how the site runs in the new era. There have been too many times when we have been lulled into a false sense of security and after weeks of all being well from nowhere gateway crashes occur, or comments don’t load only to appear hours later or notifications take you to random places on a post. The good news is we always come out the other side and the gaps between these bad hair days is getting longer🥳

4

@pakalanapikake I forgot to say I am also keen to acknowledge comments with likes, especially from the new beanies. I used to welcome them in with a message but I have not been as present recently due to life distractions. I miss the recent comments section as it was the best way to track the comments across the site which was so helpful to avoid missing the late entries on the What we’re watching post for example.

8

@reply1988 Mother Bean -- I hope I have not spoken too soon and jinxed DB's restructuring and functioning -- but I don't think that I'm that powerful. Ha ha!

IIRC, when comment threads become long and convoluted, that's when the pointers fail to trace all the way to the comment in question. A lot of times I miss seeing them. At least I was able to find your two down here. ;)

Like yourself, I have not been present here on a regular basis as in the past (2016-2020) to sow Thumbs Up thither and yon.

2

At the top of the website, there are :
Dramas, Celebs, Recaps, News

Before there was a Beanie one after News. It showed the last comments on the fanwall and on the whole website (recaps, news, etc.). So instead to have to click on precise topic, sliding the whole page to see the last comment, we could read the last comments in a chronological way and if, for example, it was an answer to another comment, we could rejoin the topic directly.

If people commented on an old topic, we could see there.

Now, you can write : http://www.dramabeans.com/comments and it works the same. But it's less practical.

@kurama, I don't think I ever used the Celebs page -- although I took a gander today to see what is on it.

AsianWiki has always been my prime reference -- because it gives cast mugshots and not just names. Truly a godsend when watching sageuks with casts of thousands...

In the rare event that I couldn't find info on Korean productions and actors, I would stop by DramaWiki https://wiki.d-addicts.com/. As I recall, they had great info on OSTs... as well as Chinese and Japanese dramas in the event that AsianWiki didn't quite cut the mustard. (I'm stating this in past tense because I haven't been watching as many Kdramas of late, and hadn't been posting on DB for a number of years until recently.)

I hope this is helpful.

FINAL FANWALL ARCHIVING POST
here writes the Queen of Melonia, Sicarius, First and Only of Her Name,
030325 23:00 NZST

Well, it’s gone.

In the last few days, I found this, a creation from a time long gone, and now doubly long gone, The Verb to Dramabean:
https://i.pinimg.com/736x/f6/2a/cb/f62acb4fcc2fcaef6c2b4feb6ede53bb.jpg

the definition of which includes,

dramabean
VERB
[NO OBJECT]

1 Participate in some form in the role of a Beanie on the site Dramabeans.
‘he dramabeaned briefly before going to bed’

1.1 Stay on the site Dramabeans for copious hours, doing nothing but talking to Beanies, posting on one’s Beanie Wall, and generally stalking and refreshing for new posts…

A now obsolete subset of this neologism definition, but one fitting to share in farewell.

I do find it amusing to have my comment and like stats stay the same but nothing to show for it. Ghost stats they have become. How disconcerting 🤭.

But now I’m ready for another long break, so as foretold at the beginning of the end, ghost I shall also, and once again, for the foreseeable future become.

Have a wonderful Lenten season and Easter when you get there.
Ciao~!

Like... Just imagine NiNi and Kim Go-eun in the same frame! (I think I'd collapse from all that stellar acting).

Put Kajol together with Gong Yoo, or put her with Oguri Shun. Hell, put her with anybody!!! Just imagine Shah Rukh Khan, with Hu Ge and So Ji-sub in an action movie!

Park Eun-bin and Li Xian!

The stories and acting we'd get will be amazing, wouldn't it. But alas!!!

I rarely used to comment on anyone else’s fan wall as I was only went on the beanie tab to play beanie level bingo and check who had levelled up so I could congratulate them. However, once you and a few other beanie’s went all in I was often popping over for a rooftop BBQ and catch up to support the Errand boys desperately trying to get to the rooftop.

Is that what the Beanie tab was for, Mother Bean? Beanies who levelled up? I and no clue 🙈🥰

1
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

No, it was just my way of seeing a group of beanies and their levels without having to go to their individual profile pages. I could check it regularly because it was a tab rather than looking for a post to find a comment from a beanie to click on to access their profile page to see their beanie level. It was easier to notice those who were Errand boys as there was usually 3 or 4 on that page at any given time. Occasionally I saw 7 EB’s but I never got to see 8 beanies all with the same level. Errand boy was the level where most beanies get trapped for years so if an Errand boy levelled up it was something to celebrate. I noticed the regulars levels just because they popped up on that page consistently. If I noticed a change I would congratulate the beanie and often I noticed the change before they did as most people are not checking their levels regularly because they take a while to level up. I was intrigued by the mystery of the levelling up as there was no easily identifiable pattern hence being more in tune with level changes to see if there was a system.

Do you want to try a search instead?

So, the baddie deleted our fan wall?

But I got to do a "Who are you and what have you done with..." over on Bluesky last night :)

I'm still getting used to Bluesky, but I think if enough Beanies sign up, follow each other, and set their feeds to show their follows, it might work pretty much like our old walls here.

And FINALLY, a site where following somebody actually does something.

@marcusnyc20, Your query intrigued me. I just finished watching the first episode of TOKYO SALAD BOWL. Interesting. For some strange reason, the Chinese-speaking police interpreter reminds me of an older Kim Min-suk (whom I may be confusing with another young Korean actor whom I could have sworn was in NAEIL'S CANTABILE, but now I'm confused). A former cop, he is amazingly deadpan.

The female lead, a detective, has green hair, and is derisively referred to as "Lettuce Head" by the chief. Warmly empathetic, she knows enough Chinese to say hello to the foreign residents on her beat, who are very friendly towards her. She seems to have a taste for exotic food. (Scorpion shashlik, anyone?) I'll let you discover what she chows down on in a crowded Chinese restaurant...

All in all, TOKYO SALAD BOWL looks promising. Enjoy!

It's been a long time since I watched a Japanese dorama. TOKYO SALAD BOWL is quirky, and reminds me a bit of HOTARU NO HIKARI: IT'S ONLY A LITTLE LIGHT IN MY LIFE. Based on a manga, its title character was the original ‘Himono-onna’ ("dried fish woman") who cares nothing for romance or keeping up appearances when she's not working. It's a hoot.

@pakalanapikake, I watched episode one tonight also. I enjoyed it and will stay with it. The detective and interpreter make an interesting pair. Detective Koda certainly has eclectic taste when it comes to food!

@marcusnyc20 Bong-soo, as with Lays Potato Chips, "nobody can eat just one" serving of TOKYO SALAD BOWL, especially if that nobody is moi.

Detective Koda reminds me of two of my favorite Kdrama heroines: Soo Baek Hyang, who eats like a horse while protecting Baekche from enemies foreign and domestic, and Eun-chan of COFFEE PRINCE, who eats like a horse because she busts her butt supporting her financially-inept widowed mother and sister.

I agree that Det. Koda and Interpreter Akino make a very interesting and resourceful team. He is beginning to thaw a bit in later episodes, but has apparently been involved in a scandalous case that torpedoed his career on the force.

Thanks again for bringing TOKYO SALAD BOWL to my attention.

Thanks for introducing me to my next cracktastic show, @marcusnyc20 Bong-soo. I just finished Ep. #3.

I like the pacing, the lack of makjang, and police investigations that are business-like, logical, reasonable, and effective. How refreshing. And no plot holes that I can detect.

So far, TOKYO SALAD BOWL is a winner. Such a winner that I'm binge-watching it. I believe there are 2 more episodes yet to be uploaded before it concludes in March.

@pakalanapikake and @kay4625,
Just after one episode but if a Korean remake (Seoul Salad Bowl?) ever was considered I think a great SK actress for the Detective Koda role would be Jeon Mi-do who was so good in last year’s cops/crime/mystery from SBS: CONNECTION (Viki US). I see a resemblance between Japanese actress Nao who plays Detective Konda and Jean Mi-do.

Indeed. In CONNECTION JMD played a reporter and one of a group who had been friends in high school now as adults are thrown together when one dies. Ji Sung also gave a terrific performance.

My first thought was, "she wasn't a lady doc, she was a brain surgeon!" Then I realized that lady meant she was the only female one, and wasn't standing in for OB-GYN.

2

I can definitely recommend Tokyo Salad Bowl. I started watching it because the premise sounded interesting (okay, that and the fact that the FL has green hair), and the whole drama has been a big surprise for me, as I didn't expect to love it as much as I do.

The leads are great, and their scenes together are always a joy to watch. The stories are good and full of heart too. I also love the tone of the drama, which stays pretty consistent even when the main storyline comes into focus. I could say more, but I don't wanna spoil. But all in all, it's a pretty great drama.

@kay4625,

Thanks for your spoiler-free insights into this charming Jdorama. "Full of heart" is right on the money. It's kind of understated, which is absolutely fine in my book.

As an added bonus, it shows interpreters at work. Yay! I trained as a translator, but knew from the get-go that I could never be an interpreter. I just cannot hear fast enough. -- Come to think of it, I've watched a couple of other Japanese shows years ago that also realistically depicted various professions at work. Very cool.

Fantastic performance by Masaki Suda who plays a college student with a knack of figuring out/solving crimes that stump police. You have to check out his great ‘do’’ lol.

@marcusnyc20, (and also @pakalanapikake and @kay4625) thanks for bringing this one to my attention, and marcusnyc20 you also clued me into Don't Call it a Mystery, a couple of years back, which remains one of my favorites.

My wife and I have been on a Japanese detective/mystery kick lately, partly because she is a big fan of the mystery author Keigo Higashino, whose Detective Galileo series was turned into a pretty campy t.v. show about 10 years ago and recently appeared on Netflix. Watching this got us on the Netflix algorithm "suggested for you" treadmill and we've now watched about 5 or 6. Just as with all detective/mystery shows (and believe me, mainly because of my wife, we've watched multiple ones in EVERY nationality that streams in the U.S., they are a little uneven.

My favorite one now ongoing is Who Saw the Peacock Dance in the Jungle? but it isn't as interesting to me as the first two episodes of Tokyo Salad Bowl, and its focus on immigrants caught up in a prejudiced police system, so relevant to the U.S. scene. And less seriously, there's also the fun with the food, and lines like "You say that with your mouth full of Ox p***s."

[moving my reply to @hacja here for more space; cc: @marcusnyc20, and @kay4625]

Thank you all so much for your referrals to DON’T CALL IT MYSTERY / MYSTERY TO LUNKARE (2022). Sounds like a good one.

TOKYO SALAD BOWL is addictive, just like the best Kdramas, while focusing on the story and refusing to spin its wheels on dopey diversions. I enjoyed the flashbacks that show what makes Sgt. @marcusnyc20 Bong-soo, It's easy to zoom through the episodes because they are only 45 minutes long. They make every minute count, even when it is spent on seemingly minor aspects of cases... There's usually insight into the attitudes or thought processes of the central characters. Not much time is spent on development of the usual stock characters, which is fine.

Unless something truly goes sideways in the final episodes, I agree: we have a winner. Yay!

I haven’t watched an American police procedural in years but I have watched a goodly number of South Korean and Chinese criminal dramas and a few Japanese police dramas. Jdrama police shows seem to me to have still kept closest to Jack Webb’s DRAGNET model. Maybe not so much in TSB but often times the look of the minimalist sets, detectives in suits—you can draw a line right to DRAGNET.

@ryunami, @marcusnyc20 Bong-soo,

Pleased to meet you, @ryunami! Welcome aboard. ;-)

I'm caught up with ep. #8, and looking forward to the finale, which is supposed to become available on Amazon Prime this coming Tuesday, March 11.

Bong-soo, replying to your March 6th post down here. It's been a dog's age since I watched DRAGNET back in the mid- to late '60s -- most likely with Grandpa. He was big into cop shows. Not sure I saw the original TV version from the 1950s. Talk about a blast from the past. ;-)

I have been enjoying the straightforward way in which TOKYO SALAD BOWL is unfolding, the everyday sets and locations, and the slow-burn revelation of the backstories of the pair of rookies at the heart of this dorama. I have a feeling there's at least one more major twist coming, possibly two.

Detective Sergeant Lettuce Head has really grown on me as a character. Yes, she's quirky, but she has a genuine respect for the people she is serving and protecting. Her enthusiastically adventurous appetite is a hoot, a palate-cleanser, if you will, between cases.

I just watched a recap of the drama Mother and man, it made me teary eyed! That lead actress looks awesome and so does the kid.

But also that was the first time, I think, I've seen the other mother actors playing *good* mothers. (Granted, the way the bio mom abandoned her daughter was... phew, even though she is sympathetic, the *way* she did it. Oh, it hurts my heart)

Ahh, that drama features such a heavy topic and it really hurts knowing kids are going through that and then some of those emotionally scarred kids grow into adults who just continue the cycle.
Sigh

Mother was one heck of a heavy hitting drama that still occupies a space in my fragmented brain. It was and still is heavily underrated. Lee Bo-Young was incredible. That child actress Heo Yool stole the show. It's a shame that it is not available for legal streaming anywhere from the USA. I consider it a must watch if you are in the right mood. It's the complete opposite of a Rom or Com.

Despite watching it years ago, I still remember the emotional punch that drama had when the director slowly, then suddenly, walked the audience through the realization of the biological mother. That was probably the biggest Daebak! moment of my kdrama watching life. The only thing that comes close was that one reveal in Light Shop.

I also loved the underlying theme of Mother that was repeated over many character relationships. The love and attention is what defines a mother, not necessarily in a biological sense.

Here is another fun fact. The show that followed Mother was My Mister. Can you imagine two Heavy Hitting dramas of this caliber back to back? There must have been no time to breathe.

Another idiosyncrasy. DB let's you sort all of the dramas by rating. If you sort from highest to lowest, the highest rated drama is a 9.8 and Mother does not show up. However, it's DB rating is a 9.8, which means it's the highest rated show. It's just one more snub of a brilliant show.

PS - what is this fanwall that everyone talks about? Maybe it never existed in the first place

2

It really and truly sucks that adoption is still so looked down upon because SOOOO many kids could be saved from these situations if people would just value it as much as biology.

I just selectively followed some of them on twitter without ever interacting. I did receive some free goodies from the fans before concert starts. But that’s about it, no social media handle exchange. I attended the concerts quickly, I didn’t mingle. That worked for me. You just do what you’re comfortable with, that won’t make you any less of a fan than those who can buy multiple copies of album😊

Love of the Divine Tree

Hot damn! Even though Deng Wei is dubbed in this, Deng Wei’s acting and the Voice Actor are quite in sync and I’m not losing any of the nuances that sometimes takes me out of a drama because of the dubbing. Deng Wei is 🥵 as ever in this and it’s making me go all ☺️🙈

Oh yes, I should add that this drama has been such a breeze! A few days ago— I think it was only 2-3 days— I was reporting on it in last week’s Fan Space whilst on Ep. 6, and today, I’m already on Ep. 16!!

3

Required fields are marked *

They're so in sync because these 2 already worked together before in TTEOTM. That's something I wish actors who do not dub themselves did more often - have a go-to VA for most of their projects so we as audience wouldn't have to suffer whiplash from the new voice with same face kind of thing every single time. Overall, I've seen polarizing opinions on dubbing in LOTDT mainly from baby voice haters crowd, I guess, but to me it was a non-issue, and I'm rarely NOT bothered by dubbing in cdramas. There was a specific post about show's audio on Reddit a few days ago, here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/CDrama/comments/1j2v1yz/dubbing_in_love_of_the_divine_tree/

Agree with drama being a mostly very smooth watch - I did admit to FF some parts (evil sis and crown prince - because to hell with them), but otherwise it was a thoroughly enjoyable show.

I didn’t get through enough of TTEOTM to notice nor did I read the end credits to know, so thank you for the tidbit!! That’s like how Wallace Chung has the one VA who’s dubbed all his dramas. I like the actual voice of this VA for Deng Wei, even though his voice is slightly more rounded and deeper than the VA Deng Wei had in LYF (which I also like).
Dubbing in Cdramas— as with many other elements of Cdramas that may or may not bother others— isn’t new to me nor does it usually bother me much until these last few years after getting to know the real voices of the cast via other shows (like variety) 😅— but at this point, I’m just being spoiled, so my “nitpicking” is just me being unnecessarily fussy lol.
I’m Chinese and grew up watching Hong Kong and Maintained China dramas— the latter, having way worse dubbing in the dramas made in the 90s, but it’s probably due to technology and experience… the most recent “Legend of the Condor Heroes” movie by Tsui Hark that I saw is reminiscent of this bad dubbing (I mean this in the most endearing way)₩, so the movie actually turned out to be nostalgic for me 🥰— so quite a few things of Cdramas (C.Ent. in general) I have seen, experienced, and have picked up on over the years 😊 So when I say that something “bothers” me about a Cdrama, I usually mean that it just took me off my guard, not that it actually makes me uncomfortable or annoyed, etc.
E.g. Having such a deep VA dub Dylan Wang in LBFAD took me off my guard because I’ve become quite familiar with his real voice, since I watch him on variety shows every weekend (but dubbing wasn’t the only reason I couldn’t finish the drama, there were other reasons …. But then again, I’ve never been the one to flock to a drama nor finish a drama based on hype or good reviews of the masses or biased fans— I’ve always liked what I liked, and not like what I don’t like)

I'm pretty sensitive to voices, esp, as you said, when it's my fave whose real sound I know very well. So with cdramas it's always a lottery - sometimes I can (begrudgingly) accept dubbing and sometimes I don't.

With LBFAD the role needed a max imposing vibe - it would've been simply goofy if DFQC sounded all young and cheerful instead of ancient dude with universally horrifying reputation. I've got an impression that, accents and line delivery aside, cnetz are also VERY picky with how characters should sound, esp when it comes to IP adaptations. I'm often not sure what exactly their criteria are tho - must be a cultural thing, yet to read enough c-novels to pick up the rules there. Reminds me of that hilarious incident of LYN arguing with his own fans over his first non-drama VA gig (supporting character in LBFAD anime, btw) and whether or not he chose the right tone and level of emotional intensity there. Debacle got quite heated lmao^^

Bad c-dubbing is one thing, but when I watched Asian movies as a kid, I did so with godawful English and then local dub, often both at the same time, since these translations were done by amateurs not-so-legally, hence the quality was the last concern... End result often was unforgettable, and not in a good way))) Just imagine: the whole movie voiced by one person with zero acting skills, rarely pleasant to ears timbre and usually lousy translation to boot! It is nostalgic to me too, but can't say I MISS that era)))

Required fields are marked *

Same for me about voices! Well, it’s more like I’m just sensitive in general, but definitely more so in the aural sense 😅
At the same time, it impacts me more with the newer dramas, but I am actually okay with the VA dubbing of dramas I’ve watched and re-watched (e.g. I’m okay with the dubbing of dramas like The Untamed, even though I now know that the VA for Wang Yi Bo is way off from his real voice even though WYB himself also has a deep voice 😂)

That makes sense! I wouldn’t call it an “expectation” but more of a want, and as you say, it depends on the character. When the character is a diety and one that is supposed to have gravitas, then it’s understandably natural to want to have the voice of the character to have the same triats— like when Taiwan actor, Wallace Huo, was dubbed in The Journey of Flower with a VA with a much deeper and grounding voice than his own, because his character— a diety that governed other sects— called for it. I liken it to be the same thing as being given a character of an IP, but then the casting falls flat of that (my most recent experience with this situation was Tan Jian Ci’s casting of Xiang Liu for Lost You Forever— at the back of my mind, I always thought he was miscast for the role, and that it would have been better if Leo Luo or Deng Lun were cast for the role instead *cue Xiang Liu fan girls coming after me* 😅).

That’s tragic 😢 At the same time, Disney has proven to us that good—excellent, even— dubbing of multiple characters by a single VA can be done! So there’s always hope

2

@nessa that's interesting about Xiang Liu. Did not watch the drama (nor read novel) myself and don't plan to, but what exactly do you think he lacked there? Man's got nice voice and decent chops based on 2 other dramas of his I saw.

LYX? Lol, if he had to play Yang Zi's non-endgame leading man once again, I'm afraid the Universe would've collapse in rage))) Pretty sure they've agreed to stay away from each other's projects because they aren't a good visual match or something like that. Can't stand AOL as a drama, but everything I hear about its leading trio behind-the-scenes friendly hijinks is comedy gold

I'm not saying that one man dubbing shouldn't be a thing, but it requires a truly skilled VA then. How many would be THAT good?

I don’t think Tan Jian Ci’s portrayal of Xiang Liu was…. sinister or ominous enough, you could say? 🤔 That’s the best I can describe it. Not even going off of what fans want or don’t want— because I could care less, especially when fans get all entitled— but just going off of vibes, what I’ve seen of the acting in previous projects, and screen presence and delivery, yes, I feel Leo Luo would have been a better choice for the role.

I agree! Then again, it also has to fit the character. I recently only just found out that Esther Yu actually has quite a number of animated characters under her belt, and I guess it’s because the creators of those animated shows find that her style of dubbing and her voice fits what they’re looking for!

I was thinking a renewable space that rolls over every month or so , you have a chance to post and archive if you’d like, but it would be wiped out after X amount of time so the system isn’t hauling around a million pics, videos and gifs.

Even a 30 days rolling fanwall is better than no wall at all. 🙏🏻

That is actually a great idea. One can be allowed only one post in one day - ie 30 in total for a month which all gets automatically deleted at the end of the month. Now that is an idea @db-staff. 🙏🏻

Probably I am the only one that is happy that the fan wall got demolished. I believe that it took away from what a lot of readers really wanted and was looking forward to read from this site. The "creators", " influencers" became the main story and not the kdramas. This site forgot to love the kdramas because of it. There are few well written commentaries on this site but mostly done to mock them, to promote liberal issues or to make fun of the traditional values that still, although bombarded everyday for a w years, majority of Koreans live and believe in. Because of the fan wall, this site turned into a children book. Of course, not all of them, I have enjoyed the history posts from @kiara and even the "what happened to the koreans" posts from @lordcobol. And some of the shitposts from @sicarius. But mainly it was dominated by "instagram" like posts where the gift or the pictures took over the writing. Also, a lot of personal stuff and a lot of liberal propaganda. And a lot of gossip behind close doors where it was very hard to find it and read it. This created a power group that permitted them to censor other users ideas, beliefs and even slander, in my case. I encountered the audocity to be told by a beanie that I am not allowed to defend myself in a post on their fanwall in which she was making fun of me. All because I had the nerve to critique a kdrama or question the motives of an actor picking that said drama, one that had a very disturbing message for me. About that time I had received some notifications that took me on some very old comments on that beanie's wall. So I wonder how much chit chat was going on far away from others. Why didn't this site also promoted the latest comments on the posts of the fanwalls just like they premoted latest posts or latest comments from the article? That would have been beneficial in promoting views because they had lot of comments. And it would have been easier for us to defend when such things occurred.
So yes, I am happy. There is a chance to get back to basics, to where this site started and with what it achieved success. Promoting kdramas and not influencers. Promoting ALL DRAMAS, not just the liberal ones. Not just the ones that promote the liberal USAID funded NGO's views and propaganda. Have writers that also promote traditional values, not just liberals that make fun of. Maybe more people will come and read and not feel that they stepped in an alternative dimension that was based on a forced and liberal government funded social construct. New and old kdrama fans that will feel free and welcomed. When I came here I only wanted to read about kdramas. And how great they are, if only compared to what has been made othere. But when you have the majority of these influencers be interested and promoting only those kdramas that match their beliefs, when any hint of traditional values in kdramas are confronted with ridicule, when the writers that are in charge of the reviews set the tone,...

Wow, I thought this site was about K-dramas and not politics. My mistake.

That's what I thought also. Or you are just not happy with my "politics"? Or do you think that liberal views (aka propaganda) are normal ones and should not be treated as "politics" and only conservative ones are and not allowed to be expressed here?
My message was exactly against political views here, which was often used in the fan wall posts. And other "pro-women" comments that bashed men which were and are also done under a political hidden message. Do you know how many anti Trump voters comments I have read? Or how much SK should change according to the US liberal playbook? Or how much the kdramas should reflect that?

in what way conservative? like, against violence or inequity? you don´t seem to be so interested in kdrama more like you want to hate liberals somewhere. most peoples views are mixed btw there is no pure liberal or conservative but it is unclear what you mean by the term. yeah what is not allowed is stuff like 17th century Joseon confucianism....

I am interested in kdrama, I wish more comments or discussion were without the bias of whatever talking point the liberals are pushing on you all. And by liberal I mean here, in US, and not the nonsense is going on in Europe, done only in the purpose of fooling the voters.
Conservative, as in for women and men, for working class famflies, for decency and against violence. That is why so many past democrats do not support the liberal agenda of the Democratic Party because it became a corrupt ,extremist and warmongering party since it united with the neoconservatives from the Bush era. I hope that makes it clear for you.
About Joseon era....might I remind youthat at what time it was ruled by 3 queen dowagers and they did not do anything for the women? Or the slaves? Or the common people? Just like now UE is ruled by Ursula, Kallas and others and they are just as horrible as their male warmongering male counterparts from UE. So spare me with their talking points that only seek to divide us while they are causing possible WWIII at the moment .
