Premiere Watch: When the Stars Gossip
by missvictrix
Time slot: Saturday-Sunday
Broadcaster: tvN
Genre: Sci-fi, rom-com
Episode count: 16
Global streamer: Netflix
Reasons to watch: Locked in post-production for what seems like forever, and then quickly shoved out of the gate with a rather abrupt promotion cycle, When the Stars Gossip is finally here! While I fancy anyone can foresee a train wreck written in the stars here, maybe we’re in for a surprise? The cast is loads of fun, with Lee Min-ho and Gong Hyo-jin headlining, and Han Ji-eun, Oh Jung-se, Heo Nam-joon, Kim Joo-hun, Lee El, and many more. Then there’s PD Park Shin-woo of It’s Okay to Not Be Okay, and the screenwriter of Greasy Melo, Jealousy Incarnate, and Iron Family. So, who’s intrigued?
TL;DR: The Lee Min-ho x Gong Hyo-jin sci-fi rom-com is finally upon us *braces for impact*

Me!!!! Loved Jealousy Incarnate and I'm still upset that Iron Family is not getting its deserved ratings of 20+ because the screenwriter is doing a fabulous job there.

I love Seo Seok Hyuang writer nim. I usually don't see weekenders but she's doing a fabulous job with Iron Family. These dramas are more her forte so I'm hopeful she'll do well here too.

Am I the only one confused with this line "a train wreck written in the stars here" - because the show has a solid cast and writer and it's highly anticipated. So why we are in for a surprise if it's good? why the train wreck?

"Locked in post-production for what seems like forever, and then quickly shoved out of the gate with a rather abrupt promotion cycle"
Missvictrix pretty much stated the reason. Normally stewing in post-production for that long (they finished filming in 2022!) and continuous shelving points to a variety of problems with a drama. Is it bad special effects? No chemistry between actors? Tonally all over the place? Awful editing? Bad directing? Bad writing? Run out of budget? We shall see.

O.m.g.
Why in the world did I love the first 2 episodes so much??? Weird, funny, quirky, very adult, hilariously unapologetic about the story it’s trying to tell.
When the recaps are coming?! I have more to say!

Surely post production didn't take a year and a half, so why did it take this long for such an expensive drama to come out?
Anyway, I'm going to have to skip this for now, as I already have too many other dramas during the weekend. Might give it a chance later if reactions are good though.

It’s possible that their are contractual terms with Netflix which stipulate that the drama can only air at the same time that it is on Netflix, and the latter didn’t give them a slot until now 🤔

I think the cost of production was very high and they were waiting for the right network

The post production was huge due to the amount of zero gravity effects in they use in the show. The production team confirmed it’s taken them nearly 2 years to complete it.
I’d rather wait and have it look perfect than have it rushed out with shoddy FX.
Then they had to wait for a Saturday/Sunday slot on tvN plus the usual negotiations with Netflix.
Really looking forward to this.

When this show was announced I was way too excited for it but the 2 plus years wait has significantly lowered my expectations and excitement. Which I think is good because I now may be able to enjoy it on its own merit rather than being excited about the team behind it.

Not sure how and when my excitement meter went up but looking forward to this. I trust the writer here.
Just be fun show. I will try my best to not apply space logic 😇
I am ready for today.

That was a solid Ep 1!! The production shone. I guess post production probably took a lot of time and caused delays.
A lot of things surprised me here and in a good way. Excited for ep 2 tomorrow

Yes, it was good! Honestly I was most surprised by LMH here. This role suits him.

Still can't believe it's been over 5 years since Gong Hyo-jin's last drama project came out. Great to see her on our screens again!

Yes. I had to check and CAMELLIA aired in Sep.-Nov. 2019. Then she and Kevin Oh were married in NYC over two years ago. Mazol tov! (Belated, lol). I have absolutely no idea but perhaps she has been laying low and off the radar in the US which is probably doable unlike in SK.

Wow, if all the CGI and synchronized swimming settles down...this could be, if not "good," then worth watching. The ridiculous of the space station set-up heightens some aspects of this relationship drama, and distracts from others--like the impact of separation and the thin line between life and death.

I liked ep 1 but I already feel so badly for the 2FL. I hope she ends up with a good guy who loves her

Whoaaa loved the pilot!!! The attention to detail is seriously out of this world ahem.
The camp, the humour, all the space-y stuff... all totally up my alley. Everything was so on point, including the chemistry between the leads. This show is adult, and international, and I love how it embraces that.
Gong Hyo Jin is just so good, and cool, and badass, and fit, in this, grey streaks in hair and all- me a fan. Older actresses like her and Syo Hyun Jin have that 'IT' factor in spades, that none of the ingenues have developed yet.
I'm guessing a goofy Lee Minho was a surprise to many, and I'm totally for it.
I could not believe at times that this was a Kdrama, and I'm in for the ride... unless it implodes on touchdown.
(Plus, a quote (though hackneyed) by Carl Sagan?! The original Cosmos is must-watch TV, and though I respect Neil deGrasse Tyson, s2 just wasn't as good IMO)
(And also praying that Sunita Williams and her co-astronaut make it back safely and soon!)

I also appreciated the 'mature' casting with a 'life' before they meet each other. (trying to keep it spoiler free...)
I am excited for todays episode!

I'm so incorrigible, really... No matter how traumatised I may be by the show I watched previously (WtPR, I'm looking at you...), I'm immediately sat for the next, tail wagging and eager, praying that this one will be The One 😂 That's Kdrama magic, for sure.

It’s amazing how we get so excited even after we get burnt so often.

Set, Dul, Hana - 3,2,1 GO! This mission has left the launch pad to safely orbit in our Kdrama universe. From fruit flies & mice & ice cream, to chaebols & Aunties & Lee Min-Ho & Gong Hyo-Jin this space adventure could be a blast (emphasis on could, noting Miss Victrix's point). There are lots of stars are out in the background shining brightly, too.
The first two episodes, FINALLY released on Netflix this weekend, were romcom-y, space-y and trope-y. We've been waiting so long for this one! Having finished "Black Out/Death to Snow White" yesterday, I was ready for something other than murder and mystery and this definitely was a change in tone. The acting, writing and special effects were strong, entertaining throughout. Although I won't submit a rating until later in the series, I would give this a 9.
Hoping all the hilarious set-ups can bear the weight of this zero-gravity entertainment for 14 more episodes.

Not that I have seen much of his work (THE LEGEND (2016/17) and THE KING (2020) but I have always considered myself a Lee Min-ho fan and I enjoyed Gong Hyo-jin in CAMELLIA (2019) so I guess I will be with tvN’s GOSSIP for the next two months.
One concern I have is the dang tvN episode length where they squeeze a 20 episode drama into 16 episodes (looking at QOT here).

I watched the first episode and... it left me feeling meh.
I will stick to LOVE SCOUT and NAMIB for my live watches because both hooked my attention and kept it.
Maybe I'll come back to this one later.
