Gong Hyo-jin and Lee Min-ho blast off to where Stars Gossip

The first teasers for the hotly anticipated sci-fi drama from tvN, When the Stars Gossip, has just dropped, giving us a good look at our future space navigators. And boy, is it a good look indeed.

The first teaser opens on an apocalyptic scene: a planet-busting asteroid is headed straight towards earth. It’s the last day before it’s expected to make impact, and humanity sends its last-ditch attempt to avert global extinction: an astronaut equipped with a missile. However, the astronaut discovers that there is a malfunction preventing the launch of the missile. So with a final “tell my wife I love her” he decides to drive his ship directly into the asteroid, intercepting its path and saving humanity at the expense of his life.

While tragic, his sacrifice works, and as the chunks of the asteroid fall in the sky, the people around the world celebrate their safety. It’s dramatic. It’s patriotic. It’s inspiring. And it’s nothing like the lives of our actual characters Lee Min-ho (Pachinko) and Gong Hyo-jin (When the Camellia Blooms), who watch the meteor shower while suited up for space.

While our chaebol space tourist Gong Ryong (Lee Min-ho) marvels at the sky, wondering if they too can accomplish world-saving feats up in space, our seasoned commander Eve Kim (Gong Hyo-jin) brings him back to reality with a record-scratching “that’s unlikely.” When he asks what they’re supposed to do up in space if they’re not doing anything cool, she gives him our drama’s Korean title with an unbothered, “I don’t know. Go ask the stars.” Unlike the high stakes and tension typically found in space-related films and shows, it looks like this drama plans to take on the frontier of space with a friendlier approach.

And then! On the heels of this rather odd and tone-shifting teaser, tvN dropped another look at our leading couple in a follow-up teaser — one that’s way more sparkly. We see our sparkly leads looking beautiful, and then a few flashes of their space story. It’s not much, but I’m feeling this more than the first one.

Written by Seo Sook-hyang (Iron Family) and directed by Park Shin-woo (Lovestruck in the City), tvN’s When the Stars Gossip is set to premiere January 4 on tvN and TVING and will stream internationally in select regions on Netflix.

I'm not sure how to feel about this! I mean it looks AMAZING, but what is the tone? And will the whole team (writer, director, actors) agree on the same tone? I'll definitely try it if it's somewhere I can access!

The tone, the tone, the TONE, ladies and gents. Ah. Here lies the problem.

(As a side note, I'm amazed at how many beanies predict precise problems from few teasers and before we even watch the show!)

And I'm not suggesting there cannot be humor in drama or dramatic elements in comedy, but, historically speaking, k-drama does not do tonal shifts (or, more accurately said, attempts at levity or pathos in a contrasting genre) well.

When The Phone Rings (shameless plug, lol) does really tonal shifts really really well.

Thats the point of the teaser, saying to the audience this not going to be like a hollywood movie were the main characters save the world, is rather about the daily life of this proffesionals. I found it interesting and a fresh of new air if we are talking about the space, sorry for my english

Im sure they agree that the main tone is not about making them look heroic like hollywood movies but rather normal people who work in space ,that even if they are proffesionals scientists they can have good time, love and laugh and learn about life in a more spiritual way and not only doing research, thats what i think it will be. Will i have chessy lines and some clichés? maybe , will they have laughble moments? Yes , will they have sad moments and dramatic ones? Yes, but thats because they are humans. Thats how i will see this drama, and thtas what i get from the teaser and the interviews from the actors . Sorry for my english

I was honestly really liking the first teaser until that weird shift in tone (which isn't helped by the obvious green-screen or whatever they were using). I don't know what they're going for, but I personally hope it's something more than a generic rom-com.

I think that the point of the teaser is not to be taken too seriously , thats why the shifting tone(its funny and clever if you think about it). Tvn even put something like this :Super space action blockbuster? 🙅🏻‍♂️ NO
'An extremely ordinary space drama' never seen before 🙆🏻‍♀️ YES. Is more about the lifestyle of this professionals and their personal believings is not going to be an space drama like in a hollywood way , the series wants to show that this people who we mostly see as heroic are doing their jobs like any one of us and as humanbeings they have different perspective of life , they have good and bad times, they will have moments were they can laugh and be silly ,and moments were they show what they are capable of.
The green screen was actually blue hehe i know it doesnt matter but i saw this in lmh ig and it was recorded after the drama finished, gong hyo jin said they had to put again the space suits, it might be only for the promotion. And notice how amazing is the space station, i have read that they made this from 0 i think thats were they put more investment. Sorry for my english

This type of drama could go either way! As long as it’s funny and doesn’t take itself too seriously, I’ll enjoy it. The teasers are looking great! Can’t wait for it.

Bring it! This may be the longest I've waited for a k-drama to release 😂

I just pray it doesn't launch 2025 with a huge disappointment. I'm trying to leave that feeling behind in 2024 lol.

Now this is a duo I never thought I would see paired up together....Not a fan of LMH but I love GHJ. I would probably wait for Beanie responses to check it out.

'An extremely ordinary space drama' never seen before 🙆🏻‍♀️ YES. Gong hyo Jin also said is not about saving the world from space wars or monsters, is more about this people working in the space and their prespective in life

This was billed as one of the most expensive k-dramas ever produced ($35 million US) and one of the longest to film (April 2022 to February 2023). The post production took more than a year.

K-dramas based on space and sci-fiction themes tend to miss the mark.
The entertainment articles I have seen have emphasized that this is GHJ's first comeback after 5 years and 2 months. Has it been that long? I looked it up, yes that is true.

“K-dramas based on space and sci-fiction themes tend to miss the mark.”

I think story-wise, sci-fi kdrama can be the most fascinating wacky content among the similar shows, including western show (which tend to boringly reuse the same old material.)

But sci-fi k-drama still need to work on pacing and background (I.e. they really need to sit down and establish the rules of the world and not violet them willy-nilly.)

I found The Silent Sea fantastic, almost meditating. Among many other ones that were actually done well, and captured audience’s imagination.

If for nothing I will watch this just for that free-spirited laugh by Lee Min-ho in the last screencap. 😍❤🥰 Yes, I have stars in my eyes for this one. 🤩🤩🤩
