News bites: December 3, 2024

IU, Byun Woo-seok

  • MBC announced a new romance for their 2025 lineup, imagining a (fictional) constitutional monarchy in 21st Century Prince’s Wife (roughly translated, working title) with IU (Hotel del Luna) as our chaebol-but-a-commoner heroine, who has everything but that dratted noble title. Enter prince Sun-jae Byun Woo-seok (Lovely Runner) who has that coveted status, but is crumbling under its weight, unable to have anything that he truly wants. [MBC]

  • Park Bo-young (Light Shop) and Got7’s Jinyoung (Yumi’s Cells 2) have confirmed casting for tvN’s Unknown Seoul, where we follow the swapped lives of two twin sisters in this story about love, healing, and growth. Directed by PD Park Shin-woo (When the Stars Gossip, It’s Okay to Not Be Okay) with scripts by Lee Kang (Youth of May), the series is aiming to broadcast next year. [MBC]
  • In the meantime, KBS Joy’s Sorry Not Sorry is due to premiere this very week and the latest promos focus on the characters in a set of posters and video teaser. Airing on Thursdays starting December 5, the zany rom-com stars Jeon So-min (Cleaning Up), Gong Min-jung (Marry My Husband), and Jang Hee-ryung (Connect), as well as Daniel Choi (Mask Girl) and Kim Mu-jun (My Dearest). • 2025 is shaping out to be a year of lurve in dramaland with a new series called Chair Time in the works as well. Production is in talks with Park Shin-hye (The Judge from Hell) to star as a corporate manager who was forced to compromise her morals in order to climb the ranks. As wacky as it sounds, she then meets an eccentric dentist when her life hits a snag and we cue the love sparks. [Osen]
  • Park Sung-hoon (Queen of Tears) is reviewing an offer to become our authoritative king in The Tyrant’s Chef, potentially joining Yoon-ah (King the Land) in the comedy and fantasy timeslip. With PD Jang Tae-yoo (Knight Flower) attached to direct, the webnovel adaptation is in discussions to broadcast on tvN. [Newsen, Hankyung]
  • Speaking of a fictional Joseon, we can soon Check In on Channel A’s upcoming tale, when the sageuk begins on December 21, following Marry YOU in the weekend slot. Greeting us ahead in the newest posters with Bae In-hyuk (The Story of Park’s Marriage Contract) and Kim Ji-eun (Love Next Door), the series also stars Jung Geon-joo (Bittersweet Hell) and Jaechan (My Sweet Mobster). Is Chair Time a rom-com? 2024 was the year of Park Shin-hye for me. I hope I'll love our eccentric dentist romance as much as I loved Doctor Slump and The Judge from Hell.

IU is best at tsundere characters (Jang Man-wol, Cindy), so I hope her character in 21st Century Prince’s Wife is a girl crush.

I know Byeon Woo-seok and IU is the newsworthy couple, but I'm more excited about Park Bo-young and Park Jin-young's pairing.

Is Byun Woo-seok is capable of carrying a drama on his own? Lets be honest..... Kim Hye-yoon did all the heavy lifting in Lovely Runner (and he reaped all the rewards, while she got nothing). IU is a megastar in her own right, good looks and online popularity wont be enough here, will be interesting to see if he delivers.

The Park Bo-young and Jinyoung pairing is inspired, cant wait to see how that turns out

Hold up hold up hold up .... I have adored Byeon Woo Seok since I saw him in a drama in 2017 with Kang Mina. I thought who is the beautiful man. Now despite my obvious bias, I can 100% confirm that he can hold a drama on his own. Look at his other work before passing judgement, he did the heavy lifting in Strong Woman because trust me the viewers were tuning in because of him. He also did a fantastic job in Record of Youth, outshining Park Bo Gum and Park So dam.. His acting is very good and natural and not at all forced.
He doesnt need IU and he is more than good looks and popularity. His star shining is long overdue. I have seen less talented people get their flowers quicker than him and that has always bothered me. So you can be skeptical but he will blow you away with his performance and nail it like he always does.

I love Park Bo Young so may give Unknown Seoul a chance.

Park Sung Hoon in a romcom? This I got to see. Into the Ring is always in my To Watch list but never manage to get past ep1. So hopefully he chooses this since I like the genre.

Why, why you can't finish Into the Ring?? It's among the best romcom to have graced our screen post-COVID.

Into the Ring still remains in my top 10 favorite k-dramas. Park Sung Hoon was fantastic as the straight man to Nana's crazy. The chemistry was through the roof. Ack! So good. I think I need to watch it again this winter.

It's in my top ten too!! Their dynamic is SO good - it's very *he's no pushover, but he lets her push him around* which is quite fun 🤭

This drama seemed to drop in out of the blue but the cast is so good. And it was picked up by Netflix? It's definitely worth a try!

1. Be cautiously optimistic. Don't get your hopes up ageya.

2. *Swoon* I ready to be loved, healed and grow up!! Also jumping up and down in excitement.

3. Interesting. They got the spelling wrong its - Sawry not Sorry. 😂

4. Weird enough to actually work. Park Shin-hye has proved she can do wacky as well as the next Devil Judge.

5. Please, please, please let us adore you Oppa. We want to forget Eun-who as a bad memory although his suits were sharp.

6. Dae, dae.
