Lee Se-young and Na In-woo wish each other a Merry Christmas

As the premiere date for MBC’s Motel California nears, the latest promos use the cozy Christmas season as a backdrop for our two lovelorn leads Lee Se-young (What Comes After Love) and Na In-woo (Marry My Husband) as they reunite after 12 years.

Our teaser opens on our motelier’s daughter Ji Kang-hee (Lee Se-young), as she’s greeted by her friends decked in instruments and holiday garb. But they’re not here to sing her Christmas carols — it’s actually her birthday. We learn that Kang-hee and her father Ji Chun-pil, played by Choi Min-soo (Numbers) both share the same birthday on December 25, Christmas day, to her dad’s amusement and her great annoyance.

But having your birthday on Christmas isn’t all bad. Especially when Santa is your neighborhood cutie Chun Yeon-soo (Na In-woo) who declares to Kang-hee, “I like you! I’ve always liked you.”

Yeon-soo and Kang-hee are absolute losers in love, from Yeon-soo singing the national anthem to distract himself from the fact that Kang-hee is asleep on his lap to both of them wearing couple jackets, their infatuation is evident to everyone (even to Chun-pil who offers the sage words: “Don’t forget to use protection” LOL).

But even with all the sugary romance, there comes a bittersweet shift when we learn that there’s an expiration date to our couple’s happiness. As Yeon-soo asks Kang-hee how long she plans to stay this time, she responds with a cool, “until Christmas opening.” Will our couple be able to beat the odds a second time and stay together? Or will Kang-hee hightail it out of town again once the snow melts?

With the drama’s screenplay adapted from Shim Yun-seo’s novel Home, Bitter Home by Lee Seo-yoon (365 – Repeat the Year) and helmed by co-directors Kim Hyung-min and Lee Jae-jin, MBC’s Motel California will air on January 10 in the Fri-Sat timeslot.

Still on the fence about this one despite really liking the leads. Maybe a beanie or two will shed some light on if its a watch or not.

Please don't be another one of those supposedly romantic dramas where all the romantic development happened off-screen because, surprise, our leads have always loved each other (which we will then see in randomly selected flashbacks that equal 10 minutes of the runtime)... Can't we just have a drama where we follow our FL as she actually starts to develop feelings for her best friend without pulling some lazy twist? I'm interested in that story. I'm not interested in a story that essentially already happened.

I'm choosing to be hopeful, because I like what I see so far (and the posters remain a highlight). It's just that I can feel the obvious coming, and I don't like it.

Ngl, this sounds like the premise of every Hallmark Christmas movie.

I would love to be totally surprised by this drama because I really do like the leads. But aside from the great poster art, the marketing so far suggests this is going to be a compilation of over-used romance tropes. Please drama gods, prove me wrong.
