Facing the wrath of Yoo Yeon-seok When the Phone Rings

With November creeping near, the promo train is picking up steam for MBC’s new romance-thriller When the Phone Rings. As suggested by the title, said phone call forms the start of our story’s harrowing nightmare and our arranged marriage couple Yoo Yeon-seok (A Bloody Lucky Day) and Chae Soo-bin (The Fabulous) are thrown straight into the storm with the first teaser.

Opening the video on our successful hero, Baek Sa-eon (Yoo Yeon-seok) takes a stand before the media mass of flashing cameras and solemnly introduces himself as the presidential press secretary in the capital city’s big Blue House. But after dolling up for what should be a celebratory day, our tuxedoed Sa-eon is disturbed to receive a mysterious phone call, setting off a chain of misfortune for his family.

As Sa-eon rushes out still clutching his phone, the captions reveal that the caller is a blackmailer and Sa-eon demands to know who they are and what they want. However, our hero is already losing precious time as, elsewhere, his wife Hong Hee-joo (Chae Soo-bin) is frightened to face danger by herself.

Although Hee-joo tries her best to escape, we helplessly watch in the sequence as the culprit takes her hostage. The teaser then closes on Sa-eon’s angry threat in return: “Throw away any thoughts that you’re going to be arrested with grace. I’m going to make sure to catch you with my own hands.”

Also starring Heo Nam-joon (Your Honor) and Jang Gyuri (Player 2 – Master of Swindlers), production for MBC’s When the Phone Rings has PD Park Sang-woo (The Forbidden Marriage) at the helm with scripts by Kim Ji-woon (Melancholia). Slated to premiere on November 22, the webnovel adaptation will be following Doubt in the weekend slot next month.

Is that the vibe everyone is getting from this? I did not but now I’m questioning my impressions. What makes you classify it as a makjang?

Cheating husband, evil MIL, unhinged adulterer, truck of doom, trampled FL until comes the revenge, crazy plot twist, etc2, everything that makes you want to scream onto the screen, rolls your eye balls, pull your own hair or the lead character's hair or the writer's hair and feels good about your boring life.

Oh wow I didn’t know almost any of that about this drama. Feeling less likely to watch all of a sudden…

The pictures alone scream makjang to me. They're so dramatic.
No other genre loves close-ups so much. LOL

Certain PDs do. Remember MOON LOVERS?^^

I feel like this is also common in thriller/horrors situations. Ups the tension by making you feel claustrophobic.

I don't remember the half of the show I watched. But I guess some PDs do. None feel as dramatic as in a makjang, tho. The scenes and acting itself made the close-ups kinda funny. Like those pics up there.

Will there be a twist of protective hubby being shady or will drama resist the temptation to go there, I wonder?

I meant shady in relation to wife's kidnapping specifically, because otherwise of course he is! But yeah, not much hope here.

This is also billed as a romance, so unlikely, but I actually think it would be fun if the male lead was both the villain and romantic lead.

Would writers have balls for this? The closest we've got to "romancing the baddie" between kdrama leads in thriller as of lately was FOE, which also didn't fully commit to the trope.

Who is the romance between? YYS' and CSB's characters? I'm assuming she falls for the kidnapper or something tbh.

I'm debating whether to watch this. i don't like makjang melos, but I do like CSB... does anyone know if the webnovel is in English anywhere? I want to check out the story.

There's a translation but it's VERY early in.

I think the romance is between the married couple. They married for convenience so they'll fall in love for real, I'm sure.

Well, that's one way to get your belated love epiphany at the worst time possible!

I started reading the webcomic adaptation and, yeah, it's a romance between the married couple. The story's pretty interesting, a lot more than the synopsis makes it sound, so hopefully the drama keeps that part of it

This premise sounds tailor made for me, but I worry about the writer. "Melancholia" was truly a poorly written drama from start to finish.

I normally don't watch thrillers, but I'm really tempted here, because I like both actors... Plus there is this romance tag, I think they can have a good chemistry together. So... I will probably check the first episode and see how much thriller and how much romance is there. 🙂

Tbh I'm not to keen on the thriller part, Doubt is killing it btw. 🙃😂 It is the promise of romance, which we have only heard of in the publicity materials but not seen as yet which has me intrigued. So are we ready for a lovelorn Yoo Yeon-seok or are we ready!!
