The current 2024 indie k-movie, SPRING GARDEN, is Jo Yoon Hee’s comeback after her painful 2020 divorce It opened on August 21st, and as of yesterday it sold 347k tickets for $2.49 million box office, well short of its break-even point of 750k admissions. After marriage, it took 3 years for Jo to get another drama role; now 7 years for another movie role. She was once called the Daughter of KBS, starring in many dramas including the very popular weekender, Laurel Tree Tailor Shop, and she hosted a popular KBS radio show. About halfway through Laurel Tree’s run, she and her co-star were on a talk show where she admitted that she did not get along with her male lead. But just as the weekender’s story changed, so did their relationship from reel to real: she married her co-star Lee Dong Gun on May 2, 2017. The shotgun wedding couple welcomed a baby girl on December 14th, 2017. She lost her radio show as a result. The couple split up after three years of marriage on May 22, 2020 with the rumors that he cheated on her. She recently said she has not talked to her ex since the divorce. As a single mother, work was nonexistent to the point where she championed a single parenting show on cable TV. When we talk about stereotypical societal roles for women giving up a career to raise children, Korea still follows that rule to a great extent. With marriage and motherhood, KBS and other networks cut ties to her. But that is not unusual in Korean businesses. It is a shame that a weak summer box office hurts her chances for a real big comeback.

August, typically considered prime box office season for Korean cinema, was far from being busy as the total number of moviegoers dropped by around 3 million compared to last year. Analysts attribute this drop to a lack of compelling films to attract large audiences and increased ticket prices, according to the Korean Times.

I think you forgot the part where Lee Don-Gun was dating T-Ara's Jiyeon and cheated on her with Jo Yeon-Hee during their drama together. (It looks like it's his thing to date his costars)

So I don't think her lack of job offers was only because she was a mother.

They didn't get along but then they turned around got pregnant? Wow, so is that an example of enemies to lovers tension on reality? And then she lost everything?

I don't understand why she couldn't get or keep a radio show just because she was a mother.

man, truth is a bummer. I had been enjoying Lee Dong-gun's appearances on Ugly Ducklings the past year. I knew that he dated a lot of his co-stars but the cheating rumors if true are not good for his character. On Ugly Ducklings you feel a lot of sympathy for him because of the way he lost his younger sibling and the divorce. It tugs at your heartstrings. The most recent episode showed him eating dinner alone on his birthday. He excitedly went to pick up fan gifts at his agency but there turned out to be just one gift bag for his birthday. He had only one fan send him a gift for his birthday...! So I was wondering why was such a handsome and polite actor so unpopular? I mean, even if actors go through a dry spell and are struggling to land a drama, they usually still have loyal fans who send gifts. So this was a surprise that he had only one fan basically.

I’m surprised about this comment-
“ When we talk about stereotypical societal roles for women giving up a career to raise children, Korea still follows that rule to a great extent. ”
It was always my impression, mostly from shows, that women go back to work while their mothers watch the kids. I didn’t know it was still looked down on.
Thank you for another great cultural lesson!

Just started watching My Name is Kim Sam-soon. People weren't kidding when they say these older kdrama classics are something else.... Started a couple of days ago and now I'm on ep. 8 already, I just can't stop watching...

Did every male lead in dramaland, from Japan to Korea, have that haircut XD? Regardless, early 2000s Hyun Bin is so adorable! and that's the lady from Midnight Romance in Hagwon? I've become the biggest fan of the FL, though, she's absolutely killing it with her performance! I have to see the rest of her dramas ASAP...

Question: I know there's a lot of criticism of MLs in contemporary dramas, but Hyun Bin's character is just... wow! were all old-school MLs like that?

P.S. was reading the Dramabeans recaps for Sam-soon... can we bring back posting song of the day? XD

I saw a recap of a drama called Giant and I thought it seemed like a old school classic drama. It honestly reminded me of soap operas with constant betrayals, melodrama, and intense focus. It honestly looks like it would probably be good and engaging but it's just not really *my* thing. It also reminded me of the sageuks set ups of like ministers all scheming (there was even a scene when everyone put their thumbprint on some paper so they could all be culpable in the scheme) but it was talking place in the 60/70/80s I think.

I mention it because I wondered if it falls into your "older kdramas were something else" category.

I think the case of My name is Kim Sam Soon is different. It's not a makjang (as Giant), it's a comedy. The script still feels "fresh" in many ways. Definitely it's different from current rom-coms.

Now I'm watching "9 end 2 outs" (2007) and the feel is similar.

Soo Ae was the Queen back then!

Lee Jung Jin was my drop dead gorgeous heartthrob!

Baby Lee Tae Sung in the first role I saw him which melted me! He then went on to play villain after villain which put me completely out of charity with him 😒

Lee Sang Woo who always played the charismatic goodie two shoes!

Enjoy! I really felt excited thinking about all the dashing celebrities of 2007!

Giant is definitely a melodrama, but it's not really makjang in the way that that term is typically used. It is also an absolutely fantastic show as long as you're willing to roll with the plot device that every character will inevitably end up being linked to every other character through random coincidences and twists of fate.

I do find with the "old school" (pre, say, 2016) kdrama romances, you can still watch them for the female characters, but the MLs are at times too much, though they of course they come around in the end. It does keep me from being nostalgic about them, though. (Of course, I didn't start watching kdramas until 2019, so any nostalgia I'd feel for the old days would be totally fake. But 2019, on the other hand--they just don't make em like that any more!

If you're enjoying the FL's acting in rom-coms, then may I suggest following up My Name Is Kim Sam-soon with City Hall? City Hall gave me crazy feels too. FL shines in dramas with a sense of humor. I didn't really enjoy her in the serious melodramas. There are not enough funny dramas for all the funny actresses in Korea.

SILY does have a bit of a dated look and feel (with strange 1970's retro clothes and 1960's French New wave music), but I really appreciated seeing roots of current Kdrama. I was completely hooked from the first episode. This was the first time seeing So Ji-sub, and I have subsequently been watching all of his that I can stream.

I will now watch My .. Sam-soon so thanks for the tip.

I never got around THE PRODUCERS but he was VERY critically acclaimed for it. MOON EMBRACING THE SUN was a terrible drama once adult actors took over (teen part is GREAT, 200% recommend as a standalone period melo), but his performance pretty much hard-carried it to the finish line. Contrary to many I did not like him in MY LOVE FROM ANOTHER STAR - thought he was way too green to pull off centuries old stoic alien and had flat zero of chemistry with FL.

I loved both the grown OTP actors of Moon Embracing the Sun. I thought the story was very tough. So much suffering, especially for the FL, but also for quite a few of the other main and ehm, top supporting characters.
Still, I have seen it twice, or two and a half times.

OK, probably VERY unpopular opinion time! #gimmeallyourrottenveggies

I thought he was, for all his acting talent even this early, miscast for the role - instead of stoic non-human slowly learning to feel I kept seeing a stiff young boy trying hard to fill the shoes simply too big for him. And I never liked FLs acting in anything - even with my famous patience for campy overacting I usually find her performance thoroughly cringe. AND I really dislike that scriptwriter, so here's that))) Chemistry to me also goes beyond simply getting two hot people and making them expertly makeout on camera... I never felt it in their movie and not in drama too. But I'm a super picky bitch when it comes to pure romance fiction, so that's hardly a surprise^^

I think... I'm not made for KSH's acting. I have enjoyed his acting exactly twice, both time for 1 minute. One: his cameo in Hotel Del Luna. Two: the first scene we see him in Moon Embracing the Sun, when he is ripping into his Ministers. It's amazing to watch, but never happens again in the show.

When I saw his cameo on Hotel Del Luna, I didn't know who he was and I thought it was sequel bait haha. I really did look for information on a sequel.

I'm not really into sageuks cause of the palace politics. I'm always wondering how anything gets done when everyone seems to be scheming to control or overthrow the king and the king is always powerless. I tend to go more for fusions that don't focus that much inside the palace but I was still considering it since I know it's considered a classic.

3

It's "I like and respect him, but I don't LOVE him" case for me - IOTNBO remains his only performance that somewhat touched me emotionally, and even there his costars tugged those strings more. But he is very good objectively, I'm just wired weirdly))) Perhaps it's a simple genre incompatibility - he's a romcom/melo guy mainly and I am so NOT^^

That was certainly not his fault - both script and FL (I can go on for AGES about how abysmal actress HGI was and what a great favor she did to kdramas by retiring early) were a certified obstacles to his performance there, not support. IOTNBO is my favorite, for many reasons. But I like Kim Soo-hyun in all his roles, some more silly.
To me, Queen of Tears was a meta show about performing, and about feelings and authenticity.
And to some extend, so was IOTNBO, even if there was much more healing there. Remember how he had to always be smiling calmly when he talked to his brother, because otherwise he would have to use at least half a day waiting for his brother to come out of his safe space?
That story was about him being able to lay down that mask and have many kinds of different feelings, including anger, sorrow, and desire.
Queen of Tears, with all the crying, still simply made a rollercoaster trip out of all the display of emotion - pretending or not pretending, showing feelings on command, being cute on command. It was a lot more sophisticated than they let on.
The Producers, Love from another Star, and Dream High, is more normal dramas, with plots mainly just to have joyful "what if"s. And Love from ... is really funny, but while the FL actor is older than the ML actor, I could live without the age gaps in the "childhood connection" thing.

NOTES FROM 9TAILEDVIXEN'S FIRST WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 2024:

1. Aerial Yoga

I am testing out the 3-times-per-week class schedule. Prior to this, I was attending class twice a week. Now that I recover fast after class (just the post-class shower helps stop any lingering muscle soreness from climbing the silks), I think I'm ready for the new schedule. We shall see how tomorrow's class (the 3rd class of the week) goes.

My left knee is still on the mend but the good news is that it's holding steady with the help of the knee guard.

2. Work is still progressing on an even keel. Everyone knows I'm still in the midst of burnout recovery so they are respecting my boundaries including hard cut-off times for working hours and that weekends are weekends.

It feels a bit odd, to be honest.

3. This Week In Korean Women's News

(A) South Korea's battle of the sexes in full swing

Tensions between men and women are on the rise in South Korean society. Advances in women's rights and a rejection of traditional hierarchies are facing resistance from a 'masculinist' fringe with varying degrees of support right up to the top echelons of the government.

https://www.lemonde.fr/en/international/article/2024/09/01/in-south-korea-the-battle-of-the-sexes-is-in-full-swing_6724208_4.html

(B) In South Korea, egg-freezing gains popularity, giving women more options

Egg-freezing is gaining popularity among South Korean women who want to keep their family planning options open. This rise in demand may be partly because of government subsidies, with the Seoul city government covering about half of egg-freezing costs for women aged 20-49. It's one of several steps South Korean officials are taking to address the country’s rapidly declining birth rate, which they have labeled a national emergency.

https://www.voanews.com/a/in-south-korea-egg-freezing-gains-popularity-giving-women-more-options/7769594.html

(C) Inside the deepfake porn crisis engulfing Korean schools

It had recently emerged that police were investigating deepfake porn rings at two of the country’s major universities, and South Korean journalist Ko Narin started searching social media and uncovered dozens of chat groups on the messaging app Telegram where users were sharing photos of women they knew and using AI software to convert them into fake pornographic images within seconds.

Ms Ko discovered these groups were not just targeting university students. There were rooms dedicated to specific high schools and even middle schools.

I remember when Jessi was saying how she planned on freezing her eggs and others kept looking at her like she was crazy or talking nonsense. I think one time the cast member said something like "freezing eggs? What am I? A chicken?"

I get it; to a conservative country and an older group, that probably seemed unfathomable but it was cool that even though Jessi was just talking about herself, she was bringing awareness to the idea.

I think there is some mistranslation here. I've seen that clip too. Basically the korean word for eggs and chicken eggs is different but since Jessi doesn't know Korean that well, she called them chicken eggs. That's where the reply came from. I've seen her talk about it in a few shows and it is always received positively so I guess that depicts that the trend is on the rise and now people don't mind it.

Honestly, if the service was available where I am and if it wasn't so cost-prohibitive, I might have opted for this earlier while I decided whether I wanted to have kids or not.

There are plenty of women who would benefit from having affordable egg-freezing services - the key word is that it gives them an additional choice when and whether to have kids and it buys them time to make that choice - if they decide to be child-free, all they lose is some money; if they can only have kids later in life (in their 40s), then it means they have some good eggs of their own ready to go. Of course, for the latter it's not that simple with all other factors that affect fertility etc BUT again - the key word here is providing women with choices.

The way South Korea treats their women and girls though... I don't blame any of them for choosing to be child-free.

1&2 I'm glad your recovery is going well in both aspects of your life.

3-C. I read an article that talked about how those kids would commit this crime fairly knowing that it is a crime but not caring about it because the "punishment" was weak and because they were confident they wouldn't get caught. And in the article the article there was a lot of the typical "because internet gives kids the access to..." as if this actions weren't DECISIONS made by human beings.
To all that the government wanted to answer with stronger punishment, instead of actually talking about what's wrong with those actions.

According to someone-I-don't-remember-who-she-was, the kids are less likely to do it again after it is properly explained to them what they did wrong. Not in a "it's crime so it's bad" speech, but actually addressing why it is a crime and how it affects the victims and why no one should be doing that type of crap to another human being.

Anyway, after reading that my faith in humanity dropped to negative numbers again.

A lot of my activism/advocacy work is raising awareness and teaching people about why violence against women is bad for everyone. Like, people don't seem to realise that it impacts them too even if they aren't the victim of the violence. It mostly works once people are aware of it.

With kids, I've taught some very empathetic children and teens who feel really bad when they realise they made a classmate or peer feel or be hurt in some way.

And then there are the potential sociopaths who won't listen until they get some unpleasant consequences...

But overall, most people will do better once they know better because most people really don't want to hurt other people.

I don't remember too many romcom kdramas that I've watched but one thing I like in them is when the second leads get their own romances or arcs or growth. I don't like love triangles. Or the harems.

One second leads situation I liked (and it might've been my first time seeing this scenario) was Romance is a Bonus Book. I liked that while intially the second leads were interested in the lead characters, once they rejected by them, they remained cordial and professional with them AND began to have a dynamic of their own.

I liked the second lead couple in Strongest Deliveryman WAY more than lead couple. (Hmm, do I want those actors to reunite?🤔). One of these I liked most them was the enemies to more arc.

I randomly thought of this because I was thinking of Lee Jong Won characters. I've only seen him as a lead once and while I throughly enjoyed that show, I wondered about him as a 2nd lead. Does he get a love or development of his own?

I have seen in several dramas that three hour's sleep is depicted as virtuous and fitting for a hardworking ambitious main character. Even if we turn that down a bit to real life, the pressure to perform just fits perfectly with taking drugs. The expectation to always work harder goes hand in hand with something stronger than Kopiko and ginseng in little bags.
I'm not saying they should do it; I'm just saying the propagandaed virtues to some degree necessitates drugs. I'm saying maybe turn down a bit for that "work harder" rethoric.
Try the social democrat's slogan from before WW2: 8 hours work, 8 hours free time, 8 hours rest.

Sorry, but I don't know the answer to this. I read that Yoo Ah In is represented by UAA, United Artists Agency. This is not a small agency; it's international and established. Does the agency provide support for him during the year he is incarcerated?

I'm just curious because he's obviously a valuable client, and a profoundly troubled young man. But that doesn't mean he can't get a better life in the future. Three words: Robert Downey Jr.

Well, I am not 100% sure but they are an old firm based in Los Angeles and they are on Century Park E so using that, you should be able to get their phone number. A cold call won't likely get you anywhere but you could ask for the South Korean contact info (like address or email) for Yoo Ah In, and see if that gets you anywhere.

There's nothing like knowing someone. If you know anyone in the entertainment industry, start there -- never know where that's going to take you. If you get to a dead end, think about how you can come at it sideways. And the same for the prison system. In America, many prisons have support groups. No harm asking.

oops, I meant "you could ask for the South Korean contact info (like address or email) for THE REPRESENTATIVE for Yoo Ah In"

He's obviously got an agent in SK, or a subsidiary agency to UAA in SK, so that's closer to home.

And, what the heck, write Robert Downey Jr. He's a big-hearted old soul with a lot of experience in the industry. Never know!

he's lucky to be alive. it's good he's being held accountable. but what's with the $1500 fine...

maybe he can return to acting after he has paid his dues and is clean and sober.

It's really funny that the picture is from Castaway Diva because I'm re (more like re-re-re etc) watching it. I will never get enough of that drama.

Anyway, I've been thinking about No Gain No Love with how it has an upcoming spinoff, and how it makes me think of western romance novel series--especially, the Bridgerton series where they set up romances with side characters that then later on get their own romance stories in which they are the main characters. I really like that setup. I want to say that I wish more dramas would do it, but heaven's knows they often don't have enough story to fill even 16 episodes.

I know Running Man is still airing but as I was watching some classic episodes, I thought how the cast really gave their bodies to the show. It's definitely funny but I could so see how by now they just can't do those things anymore or at least not as much. I think HaHa said he and/or other members had back problems from so many years on the show.

I've said that Yoo Jae Seok seems to be getting all his RM type activity in his other variety shows and that seemed especially true in The Zone: Survival Mission 3. They literally had the cast hide stuff around a building and then try to find it.

Happy first Autumn Friday, Beanies! Sorry, I'm late because my cat decided to use my head as a pillow and it's a bit hard to argue with 14kgs of determined cuddliness he is... To drive the seasonal change point home it's been raining with barely any stop for a few days already here, which combined with my still there cold gave me a melancholic mood. So you're gonna suffer enjoy a plenty of ballads today – to my defense, I tried to pick only not-so-bland ones!

While the torturous waiting for TPOB release, unfortunately, continues, the reignited interest to everything regarding the show brought me to fanmade land and damn, you can REALLY see the hype for drama this way! One of the recurring moments is this particular song used for maaany fanvids, esp those dedicated to LYN's character – Jay Chou's “Worldly tavern” - I assume based on its lyrics which fit drama's Chinese title “To bow” (take your guesses about who ultimately bows to whom - both titles are pretty open about what their plot is selling, heh). Imo the song might as well could've been called “Jianghu woes”, but since it's mandopop we've got to be vague and poetic about it, right? Oh, and of course Yuning is VERY aware of this whole thing – our chronically online gege! - covering the track multiple times for everyone's pleasure. Subbed live – with more translation notes in video's description because that's one hella tricky text:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LzhlnVXdSng

Once more because he was so cute ginger, I couldn't resist:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffeBWa4alLc

Speaking of melodramatic OSTs – while “Romantic & forget” (“The most romantic forgetfulness” with proper grammar, I believe) from NEVER SAY GOODBYE (2021) drama is somehow not among his famed hits, it's still quite good at being all emo, sometimes almost too much. Almost, because it's hard to imagine a song that would be TOO emotional for Ning-ge to pull off... I don't think he ever sang it live, during stream or otherwise, which is a shame, really, esp if he bothered to be serious about it. MV – sadly with no subs, but actors are angsting so hard through it you kinda get the picture anyway:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCjwq4A4EvA

Another OST, this time not his own – “The sound of snow falling” from famed bitch-slapping harem makjang STORY OF YANXI PALACE. I couldn't last long with the drama so I don't even remember this track from there, but it's a nice song – while somewhat ridiculous, title captures the soft melancholic nature of it pretty well. With subs so we can get it:

Next track, widely known Mao Buyi's “Unsullied” from ASHES OF LOVE gives me slightly unsettling feeling – because I loathed the drama with passion, sorry, not even my LYX bias at its peak could've make me continue it, yikes! But folks love them both, so I have to suck it up, I guess. Granted, the song itself is not bad – sorry, it's not you, it's me situation right here))) Ironically I also really like FL's DYI OST from it while simultaneously loathing her character to hell and back lol – idk how it works, it just does I think it's not Yuning's favorite either – not his range or so? he only sang it like twice which is nothing in his case – and the sound in video below is not great, not sure if his voice condition or equipment is more at fault. But he smiled very cutely at the start, so he's forgiven^^
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4tel62LWm4

Half year later and whatever was the issue before, he fixed it – but was still in no mood to finish it properly lmao. No idea what he's laughing about, but whatever)))
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFd33pKCArI

Since we talked so much about Joker Xue and his abundant discography with @cliosservant1846 last time, I've figured we could elaborate a bit more on the subject with “What do you want me to do”))) This is quite old cover – year is not listed, but it was certainly a while before his debut given the amount of fanservice he performs between singing, ages passed since then for sure. Not super memorable song to me, but still fine:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUjYxuq9a8E

With the way he loves to roast his own age stfu, boy, this jiejie is not amused!, I assumed the track titled “If I were young” would be very fitting as well^^ Idk how it's in original version, but I love the rock-ish edge he gives it. Also, that shirt is a freaking riot – one of these days I'd love to know where he finds all his LOUD clothes...

Bonus1: a little gift for poor @hacja who was probably deadly bored with yet another entry of “sedating” music – is this TIENTSIN MYSTIC2 OST energetic enough or I need to look for something so upbeat it can pass for cheerleading song?))) Title character can mean a lot of things – I'll go with “Waves” based on lyrics translation I found))) And it sounds AMAZING, I wish he'd done more songs with this vibe – reminds of his OST for this year's HEROES but even more cool. Very colorful MV:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2x6-1C-S-Rs

Clear audio with translation in comments (there are subs, but timing is horrendous):

Thanks for more LYN content! 😊

I sure hope TPoB will be dropped unceremoniously soon.

I tried watching AOL months ago for LYX but I can't stand the FL either. Not the actress but the character annoys me so much.

Off to watch the rest of the links.

1

I applaud him for attempting Mao Bu Yi songs— they’re renown to be hard to sing, even Mao Bu Yi himself says that some of them are hard to sing and that he relies sometimes on muscle and auditory memory to sing them. I’m still waiting for the day they get to work together on a ballad— there have been so many missed opportunities wherein they’re at the same event or on the same music show and don’t get to do a ballad together. Then again, when they’re both on the same music show (like currently Our Songs Season 6) and don’t do a ballad together, it’s probably a conscious choice because they wanna branch out and do something other than what they’re known for versus if they’re at an event and the organizers just don’t request a ballad from them to do/perform together

1

@jillian both actual leads in AOL were impressively insufferable together and separately, the only kind of xianxia tribulation I wished for them was to be kicked off a cliff and never seen again.

@bebeswtz he infamously struggles with his own songs too sometimes, so I guess MBY isn't far from that))) I also wondered why they never did a ballad these few times they collabed together - maybe just no luck? Yuning's part in OUR SONG this time was frustratingly - to both him and audience - brief due to unforeseen circumstances, that wasn't an initial plan at all. Or maybe you're right and organizers don't want Mao Mao to angst too much, esp when he has a company on stage)))

1

@gikata. Thanks for the shout out. Again, really fascinating for me because this song (and even the video) seems like a tribute to Ennio Morricone and the whole genre of "spaghetti western" music that had a brief vogue in the 1990s, and continues into today often heard in movie soundtracks. I don't think that's the usual for this artist, but it really reminded me of this song by Urge Overkill which you might recognize from Pulp Fiction https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JAHA4Jh5jkw

and then there is a somewhat obscure instrumental group that is primarily local to Southern California and the southwest, Friends of Dean Martinez https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RlW4CxW1enQ&list=RDEMrE9dvSMwUPaakxElvyMBpw&index=3

Yes, I think it was the vibe production was going for, tho parallels between Republican mystery dramas and spaghetti westerns are not so obvious at the first glance... In case if you missed it, the even more blatant western-like OST I talked mentioned (there were many other in-your-face "crossover" moments like that in the show):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o3cUz90_Hbk

Oh, it's been a while since I dusted off my Tarantino movies soundtrack playlist, ty! It will probably sound weird if I say this kind of cinema I consider fond childhood memories? For better or worse, the utter lack of parental control regarding what I watch on TV largely made me the freak person I am today)))

Interesting. Are they obscure because it's not a popular genre anymore whether in music or movies or simply "too local" case?

But you didn't answer my main question - was that lively enough?^^

2

As far as liveliness, did it get me up out of my chair, imitating the moves of my favorite kpop girl groups? No.

2

@hacja OK, challenge accepted!

2

I've been thinking ... how long have you been tracking LYN weekly? Are those posts saved somewhere?

Haven't quite got this formulated in my head but I'll throw it out there as is. Suppose you created a "timeline" in a sense of LYN from street performer to multi-award winning singer and actor. Then, you would select highlights from your posts that illustrate progression along that timeline (like, a category would be "debut phase" and you would select his first appearance on a singing show; or his first win on same). Then after you got the bare bones of that down, over the years, you could drop in significant cultural events, like the 2022 Olympics in China or something.

In a sense, it would be interesting to see how LYN's career growth has been influenced by the culture around him and conversely, how he's influenced the culture around him.

Start small. Add over time. It's not until time passes that you really understand how a performer becomes and artist, and how an artist becomes an icon. He's been on this path for what, over a dozen years? That's enough to start identifying significant breakthroughs.

Just a thought ... it's the kind of thing only you could do because you've got the record of progress in your head.

I've started this project of mine right at the beginning of 2024 - from first Friday of it, to be precise, and have been adding new entry every Friday in Open Thread posts since then (you can read them all - either through "previous posts" links in backwards fashion or by using DB's search/tags). With the exception of like 2 skipped weeks in February when I had to deal with death of a family member and had neither time nor mood for anything online. This makes it 8.5 months already. What a busy bee I am, damn...

At the beginning I didn't know how long I can last, but joked about going for a whole year - that milestone doesn't look all that impossible now, right? No definite finish line planned so far^^ And no, I don't keep full archive of my old posts, only a (likely incomplete) list of songs/performances I've already covered, so this is 100% DB-exclusive content for now.

Your idea sounds great, but not only it would be VERY time and effort consuming (much more than what I'm already dealing with), but also hard to make happen due to language barrier and geo lock - a lot of his pre official debut (7 years ago, this is his anniversary month btw, but he's been a singer for more than a decade overall) content and info about its timeline is archived on Chinese sns platforms only where I currently cannot gain proper access to. At least without potentially compromising my digital info by giving c-gov and hell knows whom else bigger access to it than they deserve rn. Maybe someday when the world becomes a less crazy place... But as I've said, I like the idea in theory and will mull over what I can do with it, ty)))

0

You are very smart to let it rest for a while. No harm thinking about how to make it work without creating a burden. It's only worth it if it is fun.

Thing is, I see what you are doing, and it isn't just posts. It's a chronicle. Living history. I'm a fan.

2

@cliosservant1846 thank you! It takes a serious effort to make me blush, but you've gotten dangerously close))) Chronicle is too loud of a word - more aspiration than anything, but I'll keep trying^^

1

we studied letters in the library. students from every generation, 73 y, 9 y, 19 y and 26 y.

Also decided on trhe movies we are going to watch and the Culture club: Psychokinesis and Spiritwalker

a woman with a christmas garland in her hair wanting to digitally sign herself
someone printing out a life size picture of the entire BTS in color. 179 pages. 352,8 euros.
a kid left a toy bear as insurance that she will bring a reading room book back in a day
male patron looks at me and asks me if he can borrow aftershave. I said um I don´t say. he says "yeah I can see that, sorry".
the builders outside knocked on our window and thought is funny to let in a cat. It was the cat of the school next door.

1

@redfox bookshelves may look like a fancy couch to kitty, but be careful - some cats hold an unexplained grudge against anything paper-made and would try to tear it apart/use as claw sharpener whenever possible. Plus really old books smell weird to them or smt, which can cause seemingly unprovoked irritation too.

Yes, printers are warm and also likely placed high enough for cat to make it their regular watching the room post.

Re: the aftershave
In addition to books, our library has a "library of things," which include games, tools cooking devices, like an Instapot, a random assortment of things you might want to use for a brief time and then return. So I guess a "library of cosmetics, perfumes and colognes" isn't too far out of the question!

It's Friday and I have an open question that's been troubling me so here goes. All responses/context/history welcome.

Are all these "tax cheat" canceled actors actually tax cheats, or is that code for something like "they got too successful so we (whoever that we is) decided to take them down a peg"? I guess I'm actually doubting that there are so, so many accomplished actors who have incompetent management/accountants/legal representation that they actually ARE cheating on their taxes. Or, corruption in the agencies is so pervasive, it's almost impossible to avoid mishaps in accounting. Or, the tax rules are imprecise and open to interpretation so nobody gets it right. Or, something else even worse...

(This isn't limited to any one country: it is endemic in the film industry in Hollywood which is notorious for convoluted, Byzantine accounting practices that make the federal government look like stand up guys.)

And, lastly, is this issue primarily a film industry issue? Because it doesn't seem as evident in the music industry or am I wrong and just don't know what I'm talking about?

As you say, this problem is not at all unique to Korean entertainment, nor to entertainment. U.S. athletes are always getting in trouble because of this total delegation of their financial affairs to agents or accountants. Of course, just as with Korean actors caught up this way, it is their fault, because they should be paying closer attention to what their accountant is doing. But the difference with Korea, it seems to me, is in the U.S. there is a general understanding among fans and the industry, that even if he was foolish and irresponsible, and should pay the monetary penalty, an actor or an athlete can't necessarily be expected to be money-savvy, especially when it comes to the labyrinthian U.S. tax code. So in my opinion, its the public cancellation for these financial lapses that is unique to Korea.

2
reply

Required fields are marked *

It depends on whether it is "tax error," "tax avoidance," or "tax fraud." Both China and South Korea's personal income tax rate goes as high as 45%. High income individuals do have lawyers and accountants handling matters, but many are paid to "lower" one's taxes.

High income individuals are often audited. These audits usually uncover tax return issues. For example, in 2023 Lee Byung Hun was fined $75,000 as a result of a timing issue on income for CF fees to his agency and employee bonus payments. This error could be considered a tax code interpretation or bookkeeping error. No consequence to his career.

In China, stars can have careers cancelled for tax fraud. In 2018, wildly successful actress Fan Binbing was fined $129 million for tax fraud and banned/blacklisted from acting. Five years later, her career comeback was in a Korean film, Green Night. Some others have criminal penalties and prison time for tax issues.

More IDK what I'm talking about, but honestly? Just pay your taxes if you are a high profile person. Overpay. Tell your "people" to pay up, and show you the proof.

How hard is this really? It isn't just getting canceled for a year. It's like getting canceled for multiple years, multiple casting cycles, lost opportunity for roles you can't be considered for that go to someone else -- and you can't get that time back. Plus, you open yourself up to public criticism and scapegoating. It's not worth it, even if your taxable rate is 45%. Just pay your dang taxes and consider it a cost of doing business in the entertainment industry.

Fan Binbing's case, might involve fraud on her part, or I should say, on hers AND the Chinese entertainment's industry part,(paying an announced salary and then one under the table) but it also I think shows what's wrong with the current Chinese regime and its attempt to "rein in" the Chinese entertainment industry, (which includes, of course, extensive censorship.)

Here is an article on the case from the late, lamented China Project, https://thechinaproject.com/2023/02/28/everythings-fine-now-fan-bingbing-returns-to-acting-after-tax-scandal/

By the way, the China Project, which was a good source of relatively unbiased reporting on China based in New York, has been shut down, itself a casualty of both the Chinese government's attempts to censor coverage of China worldwide (which is very alarming), and the U.S. Right's sinophobia. (which, when belligerent, is also alarming)

Yes, China is still a very authoritative regime that only embraced "state capitalism" in 1989 to spur global economic growth and create a well educated middle class. When the mainland took over Hong Kong from UK in 1997 it took more than a decade to accept modern financial and service enterprises. But then, in 2020 China started to severely crack down on HK democracy and its multi-millionaire class.

3

When it comes to China, I'd say the biggest reason for this issue being so rampant in their cinema is government's epic mood swings - whatever money laundering and other shady business was going on there for years was doing just fine until one day party suddenly decided it's enough and cracked on the pie not shared with them HARD. Without any warning whatsoever. You literally do not know what else they'll deem "capital offense" tomorrow, so here's that.

Another thing is those scandals differ in nature in every specific case - some celebs were caught simply underpaying for whatever reasons and did not take a first gentle warning seriously, some went beyond that by making shell companies etc to hide their profits, some got lost in the woods due to multiple parties involved in their profit share (change of agencies etc), some were scammed by people they worked with, some were simply naive enough to argue over numbers and learned the hard way what it means to go against authorities in that regime. I assume there are/were more cases that got resolved swiftly behind closed doors we'll never hear of. Overall, it's a freaking THIN ice. I don't think I envy any of them, even with all the money they still manage to earn.

When folks get plastic surgery and change their faces, do they repeatedly get new id cards made or do they carry documentation all the time?

Like on an episode of Running Man, one of the guests when they went abroad was stopped by the folks who look at the passports and he was visibly confused. She gestured to her face and said "face upgrade".

Then I was watching clips from Still 17 (Thirty but Seventeen) and I would NOT have thought one of the actors is the guy from a Business Proposal (even if he is younger here)

There's also the idol guy turned variety guy who is famous for being open about all his surgeries (I think he said the only thing he hasn't had done are his ears)

Can you keep changing your ID?

SK is a weird place about those things. For example, you are required to include a photo in your work resume - why unless it's a high security access job?! - but you're also allowed - and even expected to - to photoshop the hell out of these photos to may yourself look prettier and thus more appealing as a potential hire. WTF. I don't think it makes ANY sense logically, but somehow it does in practice, at least for now. Plus you're also giving your fingerprints to the system when applying for an ID so I guess whatever face upgrades you may get aren't that important to the law? They can still identify you no matter what by other means.

Asian celebs generally do A LOT to their looks - from actual surgeries to beauty shots to face/body sculpturing massages to hardcore diets - so it's often hard to tell whether someone actually got the work done or not, and what exactly it was if yes.

Can there be another one of those "Pick only one" show for a given actor posts again? I don't remember the last time I saw one but seeing some of the comments, folks have such strong opinions about any given actor's filmography.

I randomly think about this from time to time. For example: for Lee Jong Suk - While You Were Sleeping (I think I've watched this 2 or 3 times and I've always liked it)
Lee Joon Gi - Flower of Evil (which is funny because when I've watched it, it was fine but it wasn't a great piece of work to me (then again nothing really is. Even the shows I really liked others might say is average at best but I throughly enjoyed it) but seeing reaction videos for it made me have a new appreciation for it)

And I'm blanking on other actors where I've seen alot of their filmography.

Sidenote: why can I only remember actors named Lee? Haha

Similar to the previous conversation about changing appearances, I was thinking this week about actors whose look changed significantly either as they age, or purposefully being chameleons for different roles. For me AHS simply looks like he matured from his younger roles, his face has not changed much. I recently finished watching Her Private Life. Park Min Young always looks the same, though sometimes sickly thin. But Kim Jae Wook, Wow!!! I was shocked when I learned he was the same actor in Coffee Prince! I rewatched CP - one of my top favorites but so bittersweet now, with Lee Sun Kyun - and I still think if I saw KJW standing next to himself for those two roles I might not recognize him as the same person. There are about 12 years in between plus very different hairstyling but still, wow.

And speaking of CP, I still enjoy watching this show, Gong Yoo after all!, but it's a gut punch watching LSK. So much talent, that beautiful resonant voice, so handsome, ugh, heart wrenching. There were a couple of moments in his scenes where I audibly gasped. One was when his character was sadly peering at his gf's apartment after he thought she'd left the country again. There was a goodbye song playing and one of the lines expressed the thought of being so sad as to want to choose to end everything. The other was when he sang his character's Ocean song to his gf over the phone. Beautiful song. When he finished, his character asked his gf what she thought of the song. She replied that she liked it. But then she adds it also made her sad because she thinks that when she hears that song in the future she will feel pain. Well I don't know about her, but I sure felt that way.

I agree about watching LSK, his character in CP was the only character I liked, I didn’t enjoy the drama but that Ocean song was on my OST playlist for ages.

PMY famously did the series of small tweaks to her face early in her career (post CITY HUNTER, I believe), prompting netizens to openly envy her rare luck with a surgeon for years. Personally I preferred her OG face - I always do and she was already cute to begin with - but that upgrade seemed to do wonders to her career for a while, so good for her, I guess? Real life controversies aside, I feel like viewers just got tired of her doing the same thing again and again, and that frustration led to a change of general opinion on her looks as well, weigh loss and whatnot.

Both PMY and Hwang Jung Eum fell in the same trap: Koreans prefer slim faces. PMY was very cute but she started making her face slimmer. It went well for some years, but now as her face has matured and naturally thinned she looks too thin.

For HJE, imho, it was a mistake from the beginning. She had such a full confident face before, when she had the surgery her mouth and eyes became too big and exaggerated for her face.

Better makeup/styling could've achieve the same results more or less, so yeah, not very necessary in my book. Now it makes even less sense because I'm pretty sure that just like in cdramas everyone in "lighter" shows get through "beautifying" filter in post-production, and that does the face slimming trick too.

Could never stand HJE's acting and her increasingly artificial looks don't help either.

I agree. With so many makeup and filter tricks I don't understand the need for it either.

It kinda baffles me when good looking people get work done that alters their appearance. In this instance I'm referring to Western entertainers like Lil Kim. I hadn't seen her in years and then when I saw on something, I was "THAT'S LIL KIM?!"

Regarding PMY, it's "rare luck" for a celebrity to have a good plastic surgeon?

PMY's work done looked very natural and nicely balanced for quite a long time, giving unsuspecting people an impression that she was just born this way - and THAT's the miracle effect from PS everyone was envious of. Ofc some people want to be loud and proud about their bodily upgrades, but for commoners, I believe, "low-key" improvements are strongly preferred.

Any other Oh My Girl fans out there? The release of a new album means Seunghee on variety shows, which is one of the best things on YouTube.
