News bites: September 19, 2024

Park Hyung-shik, Heo Jun-ho

  • SBS is lining up a new political thriller, entangling Park Hyung-shik (Doctor Slump) with Heo Jun-ho (Bloodhounds) in a chase for money and power in Treasure Island (roughly translated). Slated to release in 2025, production has PD Jin Chang-kyu (Military Prosecutor Doberman) at the helm and scripts by Lee Myung-hee (Money Flower). [SBS]

  • MBC is working on the new campus rom-com Bunny and Her Boys (roughly translated), with Hierarchy co-stars Noh Jung-eui and Lee Chae-min headlining the coming-of-age story alongside Jo Joon-young (All That We Loved). Expected to broadcast early next year, the webtoon adaptation has PD Kim Ji-hoon (Check Out the Event) directing with co-writing by Lee Seul (Dear M) and Sung So-eun (Twenty-Twenty). [MBC]
  • Speaking of co-stars, the currently airing No Gain No Love’s Lee Sang-yi and Han Ji-hyun begin their sidequest romance in the first poster for the spin-off series Spice Up Our Love (previously CEO Menu). In a meta story-within-a-story setup that begins October 3 – streaming on Amazon Prime – the fantasy will be transporting our writer heroine into the world of her own racy webnovel, heating things up with Lee as the in-fiction character Kang Ha-joon. [MBC]

  • With the premiere of Iron Family just around the corner, preparations have already begun for KBS’s next, next weekender Please Look After the Five Eagle Brothers (roughly translated) and an offer is out for Yoon Park (Cinderella at 2 AM) to play a leading role as the fourth brother. Aiming for a 2025 release, the generational family drama will follow the eldest son’s wife as she’s suddenly widowed ten days after the wedding and takes on the mantle of the household head. [Newsen, Osen]
  • Shin Ye-eun (The Secret Romantic Guesthouse) is reviewing a role in A Hundred Memories (roughly translated, working title), potentially starring opposite Kim Da-mi (Our Beloved Summer) as fellow bus attendants in 1980s South Korea. The period series has PD Kim Sang-ho (Thirty-Nine) attached to direct, working with writer Yang Hee-seung (Crash Course in Romance). [Newsen, Star News]
  • A new poster has dropped for Netflix’s upcoming Squid Game 2, re-opening the playground gates for Lee Jung-jae (Chief of Staff, The Acolyte), Lee Byung-heon (Our Blues), and Wie Ha-joon (The Midnight Romance in Hagwon) among many others. Bringing in a large group of talents for this second round on December 26, the coffins have been wiped and freshly ribboned for their new inhabitants this holiday season. [Sports Chosun]

A spinoff of NO GAIN NO LOVE may be just what the doctor ordered- but will it be as racy as we are told the web novel was? Here's hoping.

The premise of the next after the next weekender might actually be a real weekender.

It's going to be rated NC-15, so it will probably be a bit racy. A two-episode spin-off doesn't sound like much.

2. I need this to make up for whatever the heck Hierarchy was, which was not the actor's fault.

3. Can't wait for this spin-off. Hopefully it's as fun and good as No Gain No Love has been.

5. Shin Ye-eun & Kim Da-mi? Sign me up!

1. Yes, YES, yes please and thank you.
2. I hate the title so much my brain malfunctioned and I didn’t comprehend the rest of the blurb.
3. Lee Sang-yi has a very beautiful profile.
4. Does this mean the central relationship could be a platonic one between brother- and sister-in-law? Because that would be kind of amazing. Still a weekender though and I’m not sure I have the stamina.
5. With the writer from Crash Course in Romance, I’m out until the reviews are in. I had never spite-finished a drama before that one.
6. Pass.

2. What about..."My Lovely Bunny?" 🤣

Honestly, that would be better because then at least it would fit with all the other bad titles we’ve had! Bad titles is not an area in which I need originality.

1. This could be interesting.

2. NJE was so listless in her last drama, it was uncomfortable to watch, so idk about this.

3. I love this new title, lol. Made better by the fact that he is already half in love with her.

6. Could be interesting.

7.Here we go again!! Also Gong Yoo is back, which is the most important reason to watch this.

Excited to see Park Hyung Shik in a thriller and Heo Jun Ho is a great veteran. And whoa, I just noticed the writer is the same one as Money Flower! 😮 *excitement level rises*

I heard Spice Up Our Love is only 2 episodes ...too short!! T.T

My biggest concern with this listing is:
No. 4. KBS’s PLEASE LOOK AFTER THE FIVE EAGLE BROTHERS.
Yoon Park, please decline the offer to pay the FOURTH brother in a weekender (unless finances require, of course).
In the current (lol totally under the radar) Channel A romantic drama CINDERELLA AT 2 AM Yoon Park in what I think can honestly be called a comedic role is giving an almost (along with Sojin) steal-the-show performance. It is now my favorite Yoon Park performance. Please Yoon Park try to hold out for future ‘non heavy’ roles where you can showcase your comedic talents.

1 - I'm not very thrilled about genre or premise, so hopefully it'll give me a sizzling chemistry between 2 MLs at least - like the one Hyungsik had in SUITS with JDG. Also, is DESPERADO still in works or what? I scrolled through MDL page and it seems there was no new movement since forever? Sucks, I really looked forward to see him go full noir melo.

I am curious about Desperado too. It was the first official announcement after DS but nothing since. Treasure Island went ahead. I am wondering if they are still stuck with casting. The FL has to be a good one in that (I am honesty hoping Shin Hye Sun. Let's see.) I also think it might have a similar storyline to TS.

I feel like they ran into bigger issue(s) than that - investments fell through or something? If it was just a casting carousel, we'd get some news about it at least - even the most low-key projects get gossips around them as long as they are still breathing, but here it's been a complete silence for a really long time.

SHS won't take it - I'm familiar with this drama's writer and his heroines are... not what an actress of her caliber would ever be interested in. Esp if this FL is as similar to TBDAW's one as the overall premise is.

I would love her and Hyungsik to do a drama together though. Imagine the chemistry!

I see...that's interesting. Typically PHS projects have such strong FLs. And to me it sounded a good one, but then who knows.

And the talent.....makes my mouth water. I am surprised they have not been casted yet.

Idk about recently, but writer's early works very so heavily ML-centric that early rumors about rookie FL in DESPERADO (was I the only one who saw these? can't find the link anymore) didn't surprise me in the slightest, it felt rather believable in this case.

I'm surprised too - few years ago I wondered if producers prefer to pair him up with tiny cute-ish girls like ala PBY, but after HHJ and HSH that's clearly not the case. Speaking of tiny cute girls - PEB and KHY are right there! Tho he may be not tall enough for latter's standards lol

1

PEB and PHS would be a casting coup. But PEB often chooses projects that does not have much for the ML to do, which could be a challenge.

Meanwhile KHY is bound to bring out the cute in him, and I can already see him going overboard because she is so adorable 😂 But you are right. He would probably tower less over her 😂😂😂 which I don't honestly mind.

1

@minniegupta1 agree with PEB leaning into hardcorely FL-centric plots. Wonder how that'll work for her in the long run...

Well, maybe soon we will crave something adorable from him for a change?)))

The way he is going about with thrillers and noir, I do not doubt it. The man is stuck.

2

I am quite looking forward Spice Up Your Love. 😅

Also Kim DaMi and Shin Ye Eun, this can be interesting. 😁 I wonder who the ML will be

Bunny and her boys sounds like the web drama type stories I enjoy so definitely on my watchlist, Spice up our love won’t be able to live up to the joy that No gain. No love has turned out to be but I hope as a stand alone it is good in a different way. A hundred memories looks like a Girls generation 1979, Reply series type of slice of life which is exactly my kind of drama.

1. Me to me: Don't like the premise or the genre
Also me to me: You know don't care, you gonna watch it anyway.

2.The name...but somehow I feel this could be a surprise.

3. I think I have now enough reasons to watch No Gain No Love.

4. Yoon Park - at least the man finds work, whether it befits him or not. At this rate he will always have a number prefixing him - 2...4...but at least it says he is the lead.

5. Kim Dami - love her, hate her but can't ignore. Such a powerhouse of talent. I'll probably give it a try.

6. Pass with a bit P.

Exactly 😂 anything else doesn't matter. And I highly recommend No Gain No Love, the comedy romance are so good. Only negative is ML acting is tad off sometimes but that doesn't take away anything because script and direction is so good.

That ML can't act to save his life, so none expected. But it's made me very curious.

Who Spiced Up Their Jawlines coz surely some photoshop was involved. 🤔 Ah! Just two episodes so not even a mini-drama or a proper sequel. Just a movie length spun-off.

Annyeong Park Hyung-sik. Yes we will follow you in whatever you choose to work. So better choose well.
