As an additional tip for those who want to join in, Kocowa has weekender episodes posted and subtitled by around 3-3:30pm Eastern Time on Saturdays and Sundays--about a day before Viki gets to it.

Just a heads-up.

Ooooh, I liked the first episode very much!!
It has a promise of a good old weekender with multiple stories and so far I'm interested in ALL of them (like Aunt with her little son preparing for a doctor career, or Police Officer).
I like the older generation dynamic (Noona 😁).... and the leads, they were so cuuuute together in the past! 😍❤️ What happened that the College Chaebol(?) didn’t call???
Anyway, I have a hope right now, hopefully not a false one. 😉😉

Ep #1 was not bad at all. I loved the "hope is torment" theme. I liked the family and their story lines, too. (The aunt using her parents hospital-worth of illnesses to push her son to be a doctor could be good dramatic conflict.) And only one instance of hair pulling. 🤭

It is a good theme.
And the last scene made me teary, the hope they don't want to have or give... and yet need and want... and is then crushed again...

I have a theory about College Chaebol: He essentially stole her phone number even as she was telling him she did not want to give it to him. She kept telling him not to call. So, when he went off to the Army he did not, and then he continued to not call - despite having promised to do so. The effect of living with this dilemma for eight years is that he has never forgotten her.

On a happier note: We had none of this nonsensical waking up the morning after fully clothed stuff. They were naked, just as they were supposed to be.

Hmm... I got the impression he really really wanted to phone. I think something happened.

Required fields are marked *

I agree that he really wanted to. Maybe something else did happen but my thinking is that it might really just have been the fact that our FL had been so adamant about it- even though she clearly waned hi to call. But remember that he made sure that she had his number as well- and given how firm she had been about it he may have thought that this should be her decision as to whether to call or not. It would be more characteristic of a romcom if that was the case- and our writer for this script is a writer of romcoms including PASTA, WOK OF LOVE and MISS KOREA.

It is normal for a romcom to start off with a misunderstanding between the two leads. We see our FL who thinks of the ML as a jerk for never calling while we see our ML who may have wished all along that our FL would have changed her mind and reached out to him. This is classic romcom stuff- in fact it is a trope and not one limited to Kdramas.

I cannot help but wonder if the reason this show will only run 36 episodes is that the writer, Seo Sook-hyung, may have been very honest with KBS and might even have told them that if she were to write a fifty episode show she might have to recycle plot elements, just as has happened in the previous few weekenders. If that is what happened, then we should all be very thankful.

I liked the first episode so much, and I felt so much nostalgia. 🥺

I love it when haraboji calls her noona. They're so precious.

And my LND trauma was making me feel nervous about the actress playing the mom, but this role is way more thoughtful and she's doing great. I almost cried when she said "you worked hard" during the funeral.

And I like that everyone seems to care and love the FL. But we're missing one family member, right? Her unnie.

I was a bit confused with the police officer. I remember two girls and one boy. Plus aunt. So who's that police officer...?

I hope the second episode is just as good.

I had the same question - where’s the sister? After watching two episodes, it was an unanswered question but guessed she was the designer who pressed hard to close the lift door to stop ML getting in.

Looking at the characters shot on top of this thread, she may be paired with Choi Tae-John’s character - the stock market genius.

This first episode was honestly a little too good 🤨...like our heroine, I don't like false hope haha.

But it's clear that not all weekenders are made equal lol. The leap in production values between this & B&MR is drastic, as well as the direction which is bright & effusive without coming off as corny. I love Park Ji-young so much, her performance as Bong-hee is this episode's glue. In fact, the actors are really well directed, which, again, is miles beyond what B&MR had to offer.

I really like the main couple so far, they feel pretty real. They liked each other, she let herself be vulnerable enough to share her number, he's a nice guy, but still broke his promise. Mundane, but very human. As someone who's able-bodied, I don't think I've got the right to decide how well her disability is portrayed.

There is in fact a very wide range in the quality of Weekenders. A disappointing as the last two were, they do not hold a candle to the awfulness of REVOLUTIONARY SISTERS. At the other end of the spectrum are shows like ONCE AGAIN or MY FATHER IS STRANGE.

Required fields are marked *

Wow, Revolutionary Sister's must be really bad then 😦 Beauty and Mr Romantic was traumatic enough for me haha
I was actually re-watching Once Again & Father is Strange this year, and it's actually crazy how good they are, in very differnt ways. They have their rough patches, but they're so expertly put together that you understand why someone would hang around a story for 50 episodes. You can see an attempt to use the 50-ep soap format for some really immersive storytelling. Honestly I could talk about how brilliant both shows are for hours 😅

Only a true masochist would watch REVOLUTIONARY SISTERS- which wasted some excellent acting talent. I eventually dropped it but not soon enough.

If you haven't seen it, then FIVE CHILDREN is also a good one.

I loved the first episode. Anyone notice who is playing our Haraboji? If you have never seen it drop everything else and go watch NAVILLERA. You can even put this show on hold for that.

Some characters have only partly been introduced. None are awful. Even the despairing mother is simply that: She is not wallowing in it and lying on a couch but rather working as hard as she can to do what she can for their situation. She may act mean at times (and probably will) but she is not a bad person. She deserves better than she has received, and we will hope that this story gives her that at the end.

Yes, Navillera is a memorable piece in recent years - and I applaud the thoughts going into this production. In fact, a very bold choice for a geriatric actor to headline a drama with Song Kang as his side kick. Besides, Park Ji-Hwan is my favorite dad / grandpa for almost 20 years since “Be Strong Geum Soon”.

I really like this! I mean this as a compliment: this show doesn't look or feel like a weekender at all, except of course in the fact that it has and will certainly use a large ensemble cast. But it doesn't have that low budget, soapy, grainy quality weekenders tend to have. "Iron Family" feels like a regular long form drama with nary a lull so far in the storytelling.

I'm excited!

their morning after scene had no right to be so good. their back and forward, the physical acting, the directing, acting, the writing. everything was so good to watch. I was on board with this couple since their first moment together.

its really nice that our ML chaebol is just a nice guy for real.

And what a refreshing change from the usual prudery in K-dramas: When they wake up it is obvious that they are naked under the sheets- not fully clothed as we see far too often in Kdramas. How did such a ridiculous practice ever come into being?

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

So, our ML is not really a Chaebol but, instead, a step-Chaebol- who will inherit anyway if he proves himself. But his maternal granddad, a loan shark, left his mom about 8.5 million dollars which she has kept hidden from her husband (on granddad's instructions). His mom is about to lose a fifth of it? That is assuming that there is no burglary to take the rest. I do remember that there is supposed to be a crime and mystery component to this show (and the cover illustration shows our FL's grandparents holding a classic satchel of cash). It looks like that is about to happen.

It does not look like murder will be involved- just theft.

We have confirmed that FL's brother is a police officer who is about to move out after his marriage to a very pretty colleague.

Still not sure about our FL's Unni, perhaps that will be clarified nest week. Or maybe I missed something.

After eight years our ML finally dials the FL- just to see if she still has his number. She does. And confirms her opinion of him as a jerk.

Sadly, our FL's Aunt is about to get a divorce and, according to their son, neither of them wants custody. We definitely need more information here.

EPISODE 2

I love this family already!

Haraboji and his noona are lovely.
The mom is so sweet. And the sister in law seems awesome.

But I wonder what's going on with her oppa, and I'm scared the annoying girl from the ML's office is her unnie. I hope not. Tbh, the second I saw that actress I rolled my eyes. She's always playing an annoying character.

It was nice to see the actress from Unpredictable Family, tho. Even if it seems she's going to be annoying too.

Anyway, I wonder what's going to happen with our building owner oppa. Is he here as the sister's love interest?
I think aunt goes with the dad of the little girl who's friends with her son.

Our main leads are cute and fun. I looooooved their morning after scene. I want more of them.

Oh. And I love that the ML's family too. His dad's so cool. I think it's really sweet he wants to be like him.
I like that there's no greed and resentment I'm the middle of their relationship.

Mom seems sweet too. I just hope she isn't getting scammed about the building since she's already losing all her money next episode.
I saw that Viki had this one with the "crime and thriller" tag. Wth is that tag doing in a weekender... I just hope it isn't anything serious. Keep it fun, drama!

Yeah what was that random ‘let’s forge the cooks key’ plot??? Isn’t this a weekender family drama??

And what happened to Mu Rim oppa who was thinking about responsibility at such a young age??

And yes it does seem like the annoying designer might be the other sister Cha Rim.

I have a feeling Lt Choi might have some feelings for Da Rim??

Required fields are marked *

Lt Choi? Who's that?
I barely remember the siblings' names now that you mentioned them. 😂

Well, Mu Rim had to see his entire family struggle for such a long time. And he probably knew that mom resented dad a little bit. Everyone kept talking about how dad "never brought a paycheck home". So I'm not surprised Mu Rim felt like he had to do it instead.
Even parents think they don't, kids always know what's going on. And kids understand way more than people think.

I liked that aunt told him to just have fun, tho. She doesn't have the most appropriate choice of words, but that scene made it obvious that she cares for her family. I liked how she gave them her jacket too.

She is, isn't she? Dang, I hope she isn't that annoying at home.

I got the same feeling about the cop. I thought "man.,. there are a lot of suitors for this FL. we are already at 3 and its only ep 2 lol"

0

Ahh!! Sungyeoli! yeah!

I'm already scared of the love square with rooftop oppa and Da Rim. So if we add Lt. Choi to the mix... LMAO

But that means we're missing another female character... Maybe sis in law has a dongsaeng/unnie? 🤔

0

It is obvious that the 'crime and thriller' referenced is going to be the theft and, of course, Grandma stumbling upon at least some of the stolen money.

Please note that while it is definitely the ML's mom's money that is stolen it was not clean money to begin with but rather the ill-gotten profits of her father, the loan shark (without a heart of gold- as we have clearly been told). Although, to his credit as it were, he did not avoid paying income tax on his earnings (but wanted to avoid inheritance tax).

In other words, our writer has set up a proper crime/mystery situation but not one that actually detracts from the spirit of a weekender. This is more like what happens in SMILE YOU when a loan shark tricks the FL's father into signing over the family home- it was a crime, to be sure, but not one that detracted from the main story of what IMHO is still one of the best weekenders ever.

We may have some scary moments, but it need not distract us from the over-all story. Instead, it raises a family story issue as our FL's Oppa and her very pretty new sister-in-law are police officers in the very precinct where this stuff will happen.

There were a couple of scary moments in SMILE YOU also- like when our 2FL is attacked by a gang and 'saved' by the FL's Oppa throwing his body on top of her and taking the beating instead. [Fun fact: That actor and actress fell in love for real, got married and now have a teenage daughter.]

The problem with our previous weekenders has not been violence per se but excessive violence which was substituted for telling a story about relationships. In my example from SMILE YOU it advanced the relationship because, even though the 2FL could have handled that fight better by herself, for the very first time in her very lonely life someone else was trying to protect her. There, the violence actually served a dramatic purpose rather than just being dramatic filler- which was mostly what was happening in the weekender.

Yes, looking around, it seems like the first likable one in a long while. Hope it lasts 🙏
I will say, in Im Soo-hyang's defense - she can act. Ironically enough, her performance in the last weekender (which was awful), was one of my favourite things about it. And she was recently in the stage adaptation of a Hirokazu Koreeda film, so she's got skill. But the thing is- to get consistently good scripts as an actress, you have to be Kim Tae-Ri levels of acclaimed. I mean, Shin Hye-sun is a star - and after Mr Queen, the best the industry could give her was 19th Life (meh), Samdal-ri (really bad) and Dear Hyeri (not touching that with a 10ft pole).

Required fields are marked *

I agree with you- Im Soo-hyang can indeed act- just watch MY ID IS GANGNAM BEAUTY if you do not believe me. It was not her acting that was the problem in the last weekender- it was the excessive violence and the surfeit of unlikeable characters (with only a few likeable ones- Like Im Soo-hyang, her younger brother and Ma-ri, who is her sister-in-law at the end of the story).

Required fields are marked *

I like the first two episodes A LOT!

Seo Sook-hyang certainly doesn’t disappoint. I am a fan, having watched four of her dramas (Lawyers of Korea, Pasta, Miss Korea, and my all time fav romcom - Jealousy Incarnate). I chose not to watch Wok of Love, however, as not having the heart to see Jang Hyuk lose the girl to Lee Jun-Ho! JI is 24 episodes with enough families and side characters to become a fully fledged family drama - so, 36 episodes for Iron Family should be totally doable for her.

Back to Iron Family, I approve the theme of ‘hope is futile’. A prerequisite of any good family drama is the families set up with mandatory sympathetic/loving grandparents and parents. This box is ticked, not to mention they are played by Park Ji-Hwan, Kim Young-ok and the always excellent Park Ji-young. The lead couple is real and lovely. Great to see Kim Jung-hyun graduate from the little brother in JI to this lead role - hope this drama will re-launch his career.

I’m also happy to note the potential of not many annoying characters, other than the divorcing aunt and possibly the sister/fashion designer. Not sure though whether Choi Tae-Joon’s character is into the FL and the reason of his helping out at the shop. He’s likely to end up with the sister/designer.

A bold prediction here - the ML’s step father and the FL’s mother would pair up. They might be college friends and there’s a reason why the line uttered by grandpa that she’s college educated majoring in Korean Literature. There’s also a reason why he is not the biological father of the ML to make this probable. And the father is played by Shin Hyun-joon who wouldn’t normally be cast to do a role without weight. This may mean the ML’s mother would meet her fate in the upcoming robbery, with subsequent police investigation. Hence, a team of police force in the drama. We shall see.

I like everything you have said except the part about the ML's mother being eliminated. Dramatically it makes more sense to have her stick around so that there is someone to object to the fact that some of her money fell into the hands of Grandma and Grandpa.

This conversation is very interesting to me. Is it a requisite of a weekender for every character to definitely find a pair? So the experienced weekender-lovers know to immediately look for the possible partners?

2
4
reply

Required fields are marked *

No. It is definitely not a requisite that all potential pairs form. But there is real fun in speculating as to which ones might form.

But sometimes it is frustrating is when there is a potential pair that should have formed but did not because the writer was too lazy to write their story. This happened in LIVE YOUR OWN LIFE when our 2ML was not just handsome but actually an admirable man who simply could not let go of his crush on the FL. His arranged for business needs marriage meant that he and his wife started as enemies (in his mind- she wanted a real marriage even from the beginning): Probably the greatest setup for a combination co-habitation enemies to lovers' story ever created. Instead of the story that could have been created for them we were subjected to literally hours of the ML's mom lying on a couch pretending to be depressed as a way of manipulating her kids. This remains my greatest example of not just incompetent and lazy but actually malicious writing by an screenwriter who I think consciously disrespected the audience for the show.

This sort of experience has actually taught many of us to go ahead and speculate but with the keen awareness that the writer may not go down the road we envisioned.

But it is still fun to speculate.

Thank you for the detailed explanation!

If I may add, in the classical family weekender there usually was one (or two) central family and then we followed the love lines of each of the children (and sometimes also the parents or even the grandparents 🙂). Not all of them necessarily had a happy ending (and then I sometimes swore to never watch a weekender again 😄).

2

Yup - speculation is the fun of watching weekenders and it’s rewarding to see the speculation becomes reality in the end.

And @oldlawyer’s example from Live Your Own Life pains me to this day and I haven’t watched any weekenders since then. There was every expectation that the 2ML would turn around to fall for the ‘ co-habitation’ wife but a big disappointing NO. What a waste of the two actors: the handsome Go Joo-won and my favorite Im Ju-eun?!

0

I was also thinking about the potential pairing of Mom and Chaebol Dad. They already had that sort of cute-meet at the hospital desk. 🙂

I meant it from their love line point of view, how it was staged, how the camera lingered there... I viewed it like the first meeting, sort of.

Their financial situation was nicely contrasted... and I admit I liked the humor in the writing. 😌🙃

2
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

I'm a novice in weekenders, so lots of staged pairings will probably fly over my head 😅

2

There may be something to this, but maybe not in the romantic sense.

Some of the best 'pairings" we get in some of these shows are not romantic but rather the formation of strong friendships. I could see this happening in this case- particularly if these two might ultimately become in laws.

2

The way they shot these two at the same cashier spot but didn’t see eye-to-eye gave me the curious suspense that there might be a back story between them. Looking beyond what’s shown on the screen or in the script is always fun. The long span of a weekender has that luxury to be less tight for things to drag out.

0

oh, i started this drama just because i LOVED Jealousy Incarnate and Wok of Love so much (although it was very heartbreaking to see my beloved Jang Hyuk not win the girl!). This drama is just so rich with possibilities! i love the FL, the ML, the what appear to be SML's - all of it! I hope it stays strong. I think JI never wavered in quality, but Wok of Love did get a little messy in the late middle - still - both were full of characters you could root for, and people who sought and achieved redemption.
