[Beanie Recs] Classic K-drama romance

Ahoy, Beanies! It’s time to gather your collective genius for a recommendation series that features you and your drama knowledge. We’ll drop a drama conundrum and leave it up to you to provide a drama rec, and the appropriate rationale behind it, be it long or short.

After hearing about the re-release of My Name is Kim Sam-soon and reading some Beanie comments about it, I decided to give it a try. I haven’t finished it yet, but whoa. It’s so different than the recent romance dramas I’m used to watching. I’m loving the female lead, but the male lead is so… excessive. Are all older romances like this? I need to see more. The question is: where do I go from here?!

Have a very particular drama itch that needs scratching? In need of a Beanie Rec? Email us at hello @ dramabeans.com and we’ll feature your topic in a future post.

This is funny because I was actually wanting to ask about classic kdramas especially romcoms. Like when do people usually think is that time frame?

I've never seen My Name is Kim Sam Soon (and I don't have any particular interest) but does my choice of My Girlfriend is a Gumiho or Strong Woman Do Bong Soon fall into the classic kdrama romcom area with it?

I'd be very interested in this answer from the community as well. When was the tipping point between "then" and "now" that folks feel is useful?

Was it, say, in 2011 with the launch of JTBC, Channel A, and the other cable channels?

Then - jerk ML and Tsundere
now - nicer Male leads.
😂😂

A beanie once told me the switch happened (for her) with Taek in Reply 98.

IMO, Taek was the nice second lead who got the girl, but the male lead (Jung-hwan) was still a tsundere.

Ha ha. May be that’s how they retired the Tsundere ML and second leads became mainstream 😅
This drama hurt me so bad 😭😭😭😭 I never recovered

4

A second lead got the girl?! That's a thing that can happen?!

2

It can and has happened before (S P O I L E R S The King Loves, Baker King Kim Tak-gu, Nail Shop Paris).

5

Blue (@mayhemf) Same. #TeamJung-hwan I'm not one who believes they changed the husband halfway, but there's no way Kim Joo-hyuk was a grown-up Taek.

5

I would also say
then: female leads "taming" tsundere ML

now: Female leads in crisis because of a break up, injury (or even death), or career being disrupted.

5

Required fields are marked *

Then: Candy female leads with four part-time jobs who get nosebleeds from overwork

Now: Girl crush female leads who are rich and successful and dressed in designer clothing

6

Another marker might be the changeover to the more sophisticated digital cameras that made it easier and cheaper to make the TV shows look more like "movies" than TV shows. Weekenders and dailies still often look like old-school TV shows when they are inside on set rather than outside on location, and it's quite nostalgic.

If I had to pick a year, it would be around that time too. I felt like the cable channels really expanded the storytelling landscape and the shows also looked more polished. TVN had it it big in 2013, and it felt like everything changed. Even right before then, they had I Need Romance (2011), which did really well and was inspired by Sex and the City and then there was a second season with new people. The dramas had female leads who talked about sex and were in their 30s, which was rarer back then.

When Samsoon aired in 2005, Samsoon was about to approach 30 (in korean age, so she was really 28/29) and the tone was all "omg, she's an old maid."

IMO, 2017 (Strong Woman Do Bong-soon) is not old enough to be a "classic," but My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho (2010) counts.

I've been thinking about it, and feel like time it's a bit tricky to consider something a classic. Shows like BOF or Misaeng became instant classics because of the massive impact they had at the time. Healer or My Ahjussi aren't that old either, and they're classics (at least that's how I perceive them).

I feel like even as time passes, SWDBS won't become a classic. Or maybe it already is but we haven't noticed it. I have a friend who's relatively new to kdramas, and she perceives that drama as relevant as people did with Heirs a decade ago.
So maybe SWDBS is a classic, but in a different category.
*Overthinking because yes*

I hope I never see the day when SWDBS becomes a classic 🙈 (runs and hides).

I agree. It does seem like impact is an important factor in turning something into a classic. I always thought it was about quality. But even with Hollywood movies, other considerations can trump the quality of a show.

My "classic cut-off" is 2014. Everything made in 2014 and earlier feels "classic" to me. Everything 2015-ish and later is not yet. Don't know if this is change in technology (cinematography, editing, etc.) and I'm not knowledgeable enough on that subject but 2014 feels like a good cut-off for me.

Kinda. Tsundere male leads were a staple of Hallyu. My Name is Kim Sam-soon is a rom-com, so classic rom-com recommendations from me would be Full House and My Girl.

Good list! I started watching Kdrama in 2005 with My Name Is Kim Sam Soon which was then such a fresh new FL angle that’s exciting. Then Coffee Prince, My Girl and Goong turned me into a forever fan. It was after that initial phase that I crack-watched the older classics - not all fared well but I love Hotelier, All About Eve but not those tragic cancer ones LOL.

Those were the days!

Others have mentioned Stairway to Heaven as an older melo rec, but my favorite is actually Tree of Heaven. Both have the V.C. Andrews style forbidden romance/obsession from the step-brother, but Tree of Heaven goes deeper into the connection between the two step-siblings, and it lacks the amnesia/illness tropes of Stairway (it's also better acted imo - Park Shin Hye is the best part of Stairway and she's the lead in Tree).

If you want a drama where the tsundere ML (Rain!) plots step by step to completely ruin the FL in a melodramatic case of mistaken revenge, only to then breakdown in absolute histrionic tears when he realizes his mistake, try A Love to Kill (2005).

Shining Inheritance (2009) is likely my most-watched drama. I love the absolute wringer that the FL has to go through to get to the end. The FL is a total candy, completely pushed around and semi-abused by the mean ML (before he falls completely in love, obviously) and is also dealing with an abhorrent evil step-mother and misunderstandings with her rich halmoni benefactor, all the while keeping her sunny disposition and winning people over with her work ethic, lol.

Another well-watched favorite of mine is Stars Falling from the Sky (2010). The FL is completely frivolous and shallow in the beginning, but when her parents die, she steps up to care for her (many) siblings - by sneaking them into the basement of the 3-men household where she's been hired to be the housekeeper.

Unpopular opinion: Tsunderes should make a comeback. Not Hyun Bin level in MNIKSS but maybe a mix between the super nice guys we have rn and the terrible red flags we had back then 😂
But what I miss most about that time was the crack potential of dramas. You would want to click the next episode, no matter the genre. They were addicting. There are a few dramas like that now as well but not most. I was watching Chuno the other day and noticed the difference too, also would totally recommend Greatest Love.

I dropped the show after episode 1 (because of a bad haircut and the leads acting like two teenagers trying too hard to be cool and deep), but I think the vibe of that show felt different to the "classic" tsundere ML.

MLs back then we're based in this "bad boy who choose you (FL) to fix him because you're "not like the rest"" kind of narrative.
I don't think MLs are less toxic these days (if anything, they're worse because FLs don't call them out on their BS anymore), but they're definitely more bland.

I find that when I watch older dramas from this era, they are VERY cracky - so easy to keep watching, so easy to click “next”! But then when they are over, I find that they are never my favorites. Somehow the crack-factor doesn’t translate to me regarding the drama as a whole as one that I’ll come back to. Some of it I’m sure is a lack of nostalgia, since I just started watching a few years ago. And I can understand why people really love them, but I haven’t found any that do that for me. I’m interested to read peoples’ recommendations to see if I can break that pattern!

Required fields are marked *

I think I'm just not one for the Tsundre (from what I understand of it) cause I most certainly didn't like the main lead of Boys over Flower or Secret Garden. I don't remember the male lead of Coffee Prince too much but I don't remember him being a jerk per se. He was piney (from what I remember). I think he was immature. I thought the 2nd male lead was more of a jerk (but maybe it was just complicated? I think there were alot of hurt feelings between the 2nd couple).

The King 2 Hearts, he was a jerk haha
But it was also complicated and I think Seung Gi played him with enough heart and charm that he wasn't hateable or a hateful character but just immature and had obvious biases that he had to work on and grow out of.

I really can't think of any of these Tsundere type characters that I like or would want to watch a modern version of.

Would It's Okay to not be Okay fall into the category of a guy who is a bit tsundre and a bit modern nice guy?

5
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

Um maybe, but I never thought he was a tsundere. I think what I mean is someone who is generally tough but still soft with the FL. I haven't completed Chuno yet, but Jang hyuk's character there is exactly like that. He is a man toughened due to circumstances but still lovesick. Sageuks have more potential of showing that than modern dramas, I guess.

Lmao you’re not wrong but also I still love Overboard in all its trashy glory. I’m also okay with it (and Couple or Trouble) being relegated to the past

4

@zestileigh I ADORE that movie (and Kurt is love), but I:
a) don't think it's remakable in this day and era (it's SOOO 80s! they don't make them like that anymore, sadly);
b) cannot grasp how it could work with kdrama limitations, not to mention cultural differences;
c) technology marched on and trick that ML pulled on FL would be physically impossible to repeat in modern ultra-digitized Korea. Unless he's a hacker working for gov instead of carpenter, but such person wouldn't do THAT to begin with)))

0

Gikata, I haven't watched the movie, so I don't know what changes they did. But the entire plot of the show fits the kdrama vibe perfectly. Starting with the amnesia. 😂

For references, this felt like Shopping Wang Louie, but the FL is more like the ML of Top Star Yoo Baek, while the ML is in a Stars Falling From the Sky situation. 😆

8

Wasn't the main thing in the movie that no one was really looking for her and that's, in part, how the carpenter was able to pull it off?

It was also remade with Anna Faris in a genderswapped version I think (I didn't watch it so I'm not sure how it was done)

I haven't seen couple or trouble but the topic *does* seem on brand for kdrama especially an older one: "haughty" character, wronged character, amnesia (though I've personally not watched many amnesia involved dramas), revenge, genuinely falling for each other after getting to know the other person and/or their family

3

Overboard might just be the only Han Ye-seul drama that I watched in full - so cartoonish but fun.

The Hong Sisters work has been mentioned a bunch in this thread. They tend to have fun male leads whose self-importance is more tongue in cheek (You're Beautiful, The Greatest Love). Their second leads tend to be dull, though. The first one I saw and still my favorite is My Girl.

I can buy into the cold male lead if they crank of the melodrama meter, like I'm Sorry I Love You and (somewhat in the same vein as A Love to Kill already mentioned), Nice Guy.

But I generally prefer the classics that were a bit different, like as mentioned Coffee Prince, and Ruler of Your Own World. I felt like it was transitioning around the time I saw Arang and the Magistrate. I'd like to see a timeline chart of wrist grab frequency over the years.

No all older romances were not like that, but a lot were.

That Fool definitely wasn't. It has been in my top ten list since 2009.

What Star Did You Come From is another of my favorites, more melo-romance and with very unusual leads.

Miss Korea, another favorite, again with unusual leads.

Nine is a favorite of mine too, with leads who feel very much like normal people around you.

Dream High is a lovely classic to watch now too.

For shows with more classic leads, (read: tsundre mls, hard working female leads) 2011 and 2012 were apparently my years, because they contain 4 of my most favorite dramas ever:

Protect the Boss
Scent of a Woman
What's Up
Wild Romance

And 2 that I loved the characters but was indifferent to the story:

The King 2 Hearts
Faith

I feel like shows started to feel a lot more trendy and pretty and different since 2013. When I look at dramas aired in 2013, I love a lot of them, but they feel too trendy to call them classics.

They weren't as bland as many dramas nowadays are, yes, but heavens, they were SO irritating in other aspects! My name is Kim Sam Soon is great. It's a pure classic rom-com. I watched it last January for the first time, if I'm not mistaken.

Other old dramas I'd suggest (I have not watched many):

_ Secret Garden (2011). I prefer this Hyun Bin to Sam Soon's Hyun Bin. His character is very funny (I know many people can't stand him, though).

_ Shining Inheritance (2009). I don't know if it's a rom-com, or a rom-makjang, if that exists. I think it was a little bit too long, and the FL is a usual Candy who suffers a lot. SML Syndrome alert.

_ Flower Boy Next Door (2013). It's not really old, but I think its "freshness" and apparent simplicity is more similar to pre-2010 dramas than modern ones. It's not a pure comedy. I still find the script is deep and beautiful.

_ The same can be said about 9 end 2 outs (2007), which I'm currently watching. It's not a rom-com, it's more a "slice-of-life" kind of drama. A group of friends who have just turned 30 and try to find their place. It's a lovely show. Very well written.

I have recently watched I'm sorry, I love you (2004), but I didn't like it so much. And it's not a rom-com, it's a melo.

A lot of these classics are problematic but they are oh-so-fun. Mentioning the ones not mentioned:

Heart to Heart (2015) - doctor-patient relationship, jerk ML. I loved the dynamic of the couple and the FL's non-stop self talk.

My Princess (2011) - the rom and the com is the highlight of this frothy, cute drama. Song Seung-hoon and Kim Tae-hee at their best. Zoom through the dramatics and villainy.

Playful Kiss (2010) - a more digestible version of It Started with a Kiss with a young Jung So-mim. (The Thai one is good).

Miss Kim's Million Dollar Quest (2004) - the first collab between Ji Jin-hee and Kim Hyun-joo. She wears the pants in this relationship. This rom-com has a pre-trendy vibe.

What's Up Fox (2006) - a classic noona rom-com by the writer of Kim Sam-soon. It also explores unconventional relationships.

Soulmate (2006) - this is a classic.

Ex-girlfriends Club (2015) - this is so much fun. Byun Yo-han, Song Ji-hyo, Lee Yoon-ji, Ryu Hwa-young (I miss this actress). The girls together are great!

The Man Who Can't Get Married (2009) - remake of a Japanese dorama with Ji Jin-hee and Uhm Jung-hwa. Psst he's not a jerk but he is infuriating for our FL.

Flower Boy Ramen Shop (2011) - the first of the Flower Boy series. I loved the romance and the SML's role. Do read @javabeans and @girlfriday's recaps to gain more insight into the drama. Jung Il-woo is such a charmer (also watch him in Return of Iljimae, a sageuk as beautiful as Bossam and 49 Days).

Biscuit Teacher Star Candy (2005) - teacher-student relationship between Gong Yoo and Gong Hyo-jin. I liked Gong Yoo's growth in this.

Discovery of Romance (2014) - Eric and Jung Yu-mi reunite in this love triangle with Sung Joon after the intense Que Sera Sera. Eric is electric here and the growth of the characters is good.

High School King of Savvy (2014) - Seo In-guk, Lee Hana, Lee Soo-hyuk. Kang Ki-young, Lee Tae-hwan and Shin Hye-sun in smaller roles. Noona rom-com. I loved the main couple's dynamics.

Witch's Romance (2014) - classy Uhm Jung-hwa with Park Seo-joon.

The first half of Myung-wol the Spy (2011) - good, silly fun till it devolved into something else.

Drinking Solo (2016) - from the writer of A Poem A Day. A+ jerk ML, candy FL in a very fun drama. Enjoy the Noryangjin foolish trio. They're a hoot.

Devilish Joy (2018) - neck breaking romance between Choi Jin-hyuk and Song Ha-yoon.

The first half of Me too Flower (2011) - not a rom-com. Loved the unconventional FL (Lee Ji-ah) and her growing romance with Yoon Shi-yoon.

Goodbye Solo (2006) - a beautiful exploration of loving others and loving oneself by Noh Hee-kyung. Kim Nam-gil plays second lead here (he's also in a blink and you miss role in Kim Sam-soon)

Second to Last Love (2016) - rom-com of an older couple played by Ji Jin-hee and Kim Hee-ae. I liked how they included most tropes but it kept it a little toned down.

Birth of a Billionaire (2010) - enjoyed...

Birth of a Billionaire (2010) - enjoyed the FL played by Lee Bo-young - she's the chaebol. They tried to make her like ye olden jerk MLs but instead I loved her character. Namgoong Min is the SL and he has a good character arc.

Sly and Single Again (2014) - fun second chance rom-com between Jo Sang-wook (he should do more rom-coms!) and Lee Min-jung. Baby Seo Kang-joon is the second lead (poor baby).

Warm and Cozy (2015) - Hong sisters, Yoo Yeon-seok, Kang So-ra, what's not to watch? Actually a lot. The ML is a head-bashing man-child, the SFL lead is such a b**ch. But I enjoyed the acting (Yoo Yeon-seok can do no wrong) and the second couple.

My Fair Lady (2009) - it starts off fun, has a lot of heart but steadily loses its charm as it goes along. The actors are great and I especially loved Moon Chae-won (♥️) and Jung Il-woo (he's so underrated, it's unfair!)

Cinderella and the Four Knights (2016) - don't bring your brains here, just enjoy the charming actors, their juvenility and the OST.
