Shin Hye-sun clings to dreams instead of love in To My Hae-ri

Evoking the bittersweet melancholy feels in ENA’s upcoming romance To My Hae-ri, the newest promos present us with what they’re calling “mood film” teasers, lingering in the nostalgia of Shin Hye-sun (Welcome to Samdal-ri) and Lee Jin-wook’s (Sweet Home 3) dating past.

In the new poster, we get our first look at Shin Hye-sun’s two roles: the pragmatic announcer Joo Eun-ho and her idealistic younger (twin?) sister Joo Hye-ri. Our central heroine, though, is unni Eun-ho and over the course of the short trilogy of teasers, she shares the beginnings of her memoir through the style of an old-school slide projector or silent film.

In each of the clips, the scenes of Eun-ho and ex-boyfriend Jung Hyun-oh (Lee Jin-wook) are hazy like a fevered dream. And despite appearing like cute memories, Eun-ho’s scornful narration tells us otherwise. Indeed, in mood film #1, Eun-ho argues: “What do you mean, a love story? I didn’t come here to talk about such things. I’m here to talk about dreams. It’s not a love story whatsoever. Let’s agree to leave it as a dream.”

Eun-ho continues to express her point in mood film #2, speaking both to the audience and to Hyun-oh as well: “What do you mean, a love story? I’d rather even call it hate. Even if something happens to cause my death, don’t come. Because I dislike you so much, it almost feels as if I like you.”

In the third teaser, Eun-ho then openly brings up the matter of intimacy in relationships. Though I think I’ll need more context to fully understand, the suggestion is that this was also a factor in complicating her relationship with Hyun-oh: “Have you had your first kiss? Once you develop physical familiarity, the next step is avoidance. Since we kissed, let’s just call it even.”

With production in the talented hands of PD Jung Ji-hyun (Lies Hidden in My Garden, Twenty Five Twenty One) and writer Han Ga-ram (I’ll Find You on a Beautiful Day), may the drama gods bestow their blessing and deliver us a thoughtful romance. ENA’s To My Hae-ri premieres on September 23, broadcasting in the Monday-Tuesday slot following Your Honor.

I DON'T like the writer (😬) and the teasers don't make me confident I'll like the show.
However, I LOVE the PD, his colour work is some of my favourite (YAMS, 2521), and I love Shin Hye Sun.
So I'll probably start it. And reserve the right to quote mood film #2 at the show itself later on 😂.

Younger sister? Wasn't this billed as a multiple personality drama - with Hye-ri being the other personality 🤔?

Yeah, I saw she has dissociative disorder. This would be the 2nd kdrama with a character with dissociative disorder I am watching. Is it a trend now? The last time this was trending we got the gem that was Kill me Heal Me.

What's the other drama with dissociative disorder 👀?

Although I can totally imagine Shin Hye-sun pulling off a Kill Me, Heal Me, this drama seems to be giving off a much more sentimental/melancholic vibe.

I like Shin Hye Sun so I may check out her new drama. I like the previous works of the PD but have not watched the writer's previous work. So I may still give this a chance even if the ML is not my fave.

I am wondering if this may be making the point I have noticed for a while now, someone (usually the second lead or an abusing parent) will do something inappropriate/selfish/unnecessary and the music will be gaslighting us to feel sympathy for the character when it fact our instinct tells us otherwise.

Ugh. After his history, definitely don't want to see him in this kind of story or really any story.

I like the cast and the director but the writer is what worries me here.

I loved 25-21 and When the weather is fine, so a priori I should like this drama too. But dramas aren't an exact science, are they?
I'm also interested because Kang Hoon is one of the main leads.

I loved Shin Hye-sun in "Mr. Queen" so much I suffered though "Samdalri" and "See you in my 17th life". Which both had male leads I usually like a lot (call me, Ji Chang-wook!), and both had interesting ideas but both also made me feel like sitting at the bottom of a pool for the next twenty minutes or so.

I'LL FIND YOU ON BEAUTIFUL DAY is a masterpiece and one of the few shows that I re-watch (best in the wintertime)- this show has the same writer. Of course, that was not just because of the writing- it also had a great director - but so does this show. It had great performances by all the actors as well- and this show has Shin Hye-sun who always delivers a great performance. Until this show airs we will not know if it also has great cinematography, sound effects, etc. but so far things are adding up in the most promising way for this drama.

I plan on watching this one.

"Mood film" teasers. Okay that's new but doesn't seem to be my vibe. Sigh, Shin Hye-sun Unnie better convince me otherwise. 😊
