Premiere Watch: Queen Woo

Time slot: Thursday (single drop)
Broadcaster: TVING
Genre: Sageuk, action
Episode count: 4 (Part 1)

Reasons to watch: If you’re ready for a sweeping Gorguryeo action sageuk saga fest to balance out all of the rom-coms we have on our hands this month, Queen Woo is here! TVING is releasing the drama in two parts, so we’ll get Part 1 on August 29 and then Part 2 (also 4 episodes) two weeks later on September 12. With Jeon Jong-seo as our eponymous queen, Ji Chang-wook (!!) as her soon-dead husband, and Lee Soo-hyuk as the prince ready to take queen + throne — I mean, doesn’t this sound like everything you didn’t know you needed? I’m sorry your character bites the dust early, Chang-wook, but the thought of the intensity of a Jeon Jong-seo x Lee Soo-hyuk pairing is highly appealing. The drama also boasts Kim Mu-yeol, Kang Young-seok, Jung Yumi, and others.

TL;DR: Lee Soo-hyuk mane of glory, let’s go!

Oh my... this was the final Kdrama that debuted on August 2024! Also, I don't think this Kdrama also served as the final Kdrama during summer of 2024.

So long August 2024, the month of epic premieres/debuts as well as summer 2024!

I don't know about the rest of y'all but I'm ready for an NC-17 history-ish-esque ROMP-O-RAMA. Kill the pig; spill its bloooood!!

If I wanted to learn facts about old-tyme Korea, you see, I don't think I'd look to TVING--when I went over to check Viu, they're requiring parental controls to be turned on to see the content...AND you have to pay. That's my kind of show!

For facts, I'd much rather read Kim Han In-sun's, ‘Look at the Alcohol If You Want to Know the Country’: Drinking Vessels as a Cultural Marker of Medieval Korea,” Acta Via Serica 4, no. 2 (2019): 29–59. https://www.dbpia.co.kr/journal/articleDetail?nodeId=NODE10487113

I'm pretty sure *history* was NC-17, or we wouldn't be here.

Since the documentation about that time is scanty and written records are probably almost entirely distorted, biased, or fabricated, I am going to accept this as fiction and hope it's gloriously wild and intense and lives up to that rating. It sounds like plenty of guardrails have been put up to keep the kids away and the adults know what they're getting into.

As with a lot of kdramas, I'm a lot more worried about the delicate sensibilities of censorious adults than I am about the occasional 12 year old who sneaks around the guardrails. Those kids might take a new interest in learning their early history!

To borrow an awesome expression I once read on web, history was (still is, for better or worse) more like NC-no-one-lives-that-long)))

That article reminds me of a book published a few years back, Drunk: How We Sipped, Danced, and Stumbled Our Way to Civilization by Edward Slingerland, that made a pretty convincing case, as its title says, that the rise of civilization owed a great deal to excessive alcohol consumption. In that way, you have to say most kdramas have an element of historical accuracy!

I assume parental consent required indicates that they will actually show what it means for the prince to "take" the wife with the crown? Of course this was prior to the Joseon era, when eunuchs were fat figures of fun in green robes, and courtesans were a giggling gaggle of girls in beautiful hanbok.

Or velvet maybe? Whichever it is, a stylist should know that these materials are the worst for photocalls with camera flashes

@enriquequierecagar Satin and velvet can reflect light in many directions and the most unforgiving ways.

2

@midnight thanks!

At first I thought it was the type of cloth that would work in cold places (I only know "hot" so understand my ignorance), and then I thought it looked like something you would see in a fashion show (I only know "bad fashion sense" so understand my ignorance LOL).

But now that you describe it is sounds awful in any context. 😂😂

I've read comments comparing the episodes to Game of Thrones. Having just watched all four episodes, I can say that the comparison is not so inappropriate. Very, very dark and bloody, but I really liked it (especially episode 3). Opinions will definitely be divided though.

I wonder why Ji Chang-Wook doesn't promote it with them, he was more than a cameo who died early in these 4 episodes.

While reading up on some of the history of Imjin war, I stumbled upon a landmine. Guess what, not only Joseon history was NC 17, if it was depicted as it really was, there would be very little that would get past the prudes of K-censor board 😂, not to mention all the Idol worshippers would go up in arms were they to be populated by their favourites.

Are we even surprised? I mean, for a society supposedly valuing morals and proprieties above everything else, Joseon still had their sweet little tradition of concubinage and brothels going... Not to mention those few WILD Kings they had that even Annals' infamous whitewashing couldn't turn into anything remotely decent)))

Once again, it's just Chungmuro influencing kdramas, but going hard at it this time. Maybe one great day they will finally find a middle ground...

It's a scary and sobering find. Joseon soldiers raped their own women along with Ming soldiers during the Imjin war. Mountain bandits pillaged already destroyed villages and looted whoever was left behind. Hundreds of women were kidnapped and raped by the Japanese whose key priorities during the conflict were "granaries, understanding local geography, and beautiful women" (wiki) and the Joseon soldiers upon finding them, instead of rescuing them, burnt them alive, along with their kidnappers. It's detailed in the 'The Imjin War and the Official Discourse of Chastity' by Lee Sook-in (Kyujanggak Institute of Korean studies), and the parts of ts translations can be found in a few places.

Nothing new per war times course. The key is to never fully buy ANY nation's "holier than thou" attitude - yes, some are worse than others (sometimes FAR), but no one is 100% clean and heroic, no matter what propaganda says.

1

'Chastity' was used as a tool to subjugate the population, the onus of rebuilding (read not have ANY opinion) the fabric of society was slammed on women. The atrocities however continued during the Manchu invasion and became worse during the 1636 invasion. But kidnapping of women was rampant under the guise of making them their concubines. Translated in modern terms: Become you rapist's mistress.

I really didn't know that this show's content rating is 18+Restricted till I saw the first two episodes (do you know how I felt having to watch our Wookie panting, half naked surrounded by topless and scantily clad ladies in each episode) LOL is this what I'm going to watch for the next 6 episodes? I know, I am an adult who should have no problem watching sexual contents but~ 😵‍💫 but now I don't know how exactly I felt .. i was excited to watch this show coz it has quite a list of big names in the industry. I haven't watch ep. 3 and 4 but I'm going to pause for now to give myself a moment for thoughts.. 😂

0

@ryunami Yeah, there are a lot of flashbacks to explain the past and its consequences on the present.

2

There are flashbacks with the king (JCW) in all episodes. In these four episodes, the king has more screen time than his brothers.

@nefret In the show's actor list, JCW looks like the ML of the show; so it's no wonder he appeared a lot. I bet in the final ep, he will appear as a ghost, and getting mad at the Queen for marrying his brother.

3

@claire2009 😂

His appearance in the drama like he's one of the ML but I wonder why Wookie didn't show up during Tving's recent unveil/press con on this drama. He sounds more excited about Gangnam B-Style (which I'm excited too!)

2

I think because Tving’s press con was overlapping with his Rado event in Taiwan.

He said in an interview that he is a special guest in Queen Woo. So special guest appearance, half-naked-ness, beard, early death… I guess I don’t need more reasons to not watch the show 😅😂

3

😂😂 @ryunani am I to understand that the king is getting it on with everyone then...not just the queen? Not that it's anything new, but I'm not in the mood for orgies, implied or otherwise. I'm an adult and I admit I *do* have a problem (over) sexualised content 🙈

3

reply

Required fields are marked *

@sunnyboo Well.. it's not really the King's faults; he had too many advisors here and there advising how to handle his enemies in the King's court and having those half nudists around him was apart of their scheme? And there was a time he think he did it with his Queen but actually was with someone else?

I never really watch western shows including Games of Throne (which they say is what this drama is trying to be); I can watch intimate kissings never an over sexualised ko of œ

..but never an oversexualised content.

1

Thanks @ryunami 🥰 Don't apologise for the typos, I just noticed I had plenty in mine too.
Nothing like using sex as a weaponised strategy, heh? 🙄
I'm the same - I don't watch western shows and have never seen GOT.

I'm probably going to skip this one.

2

Actually from what was shown in the 4 episodes so far, he wasn't having orgies.

(Spoiler:

The sexual scene was a front. And the sex scene of him and a particular character was that person's imagination.)

"I know, I am an adult who should have no problem watching sexual contents but~ 😵‍💫 but now I don't know how exactly I felt .."

Don't feel bad. I'm not being a prude (I feel like I have to qualify my opinion, lol), but my issue is when things become gratuitous. I feel that what I saw in the first two episodes was pretty much in that category. I'm hesitant to continue, but I'll probably still do so, lol.

I watched the first episode. I felt the same way. I don't like when characters are 'boxed' and the audience is 'led' to feel about them a certain way. There was a lot of 'showing' and not much telling.

The mood is Game of Thrones but the set up does not pull you in, at least not right away.

@minniegupta1 Exactly!

Many Kdrama sites left the rating content empty until like yesterday or the day before yesterday, meaning Tving kept it a secret till the premierday. So it was a huge surprise when i get a different type of sageuk than what I actually expecting for

@peridot I hope I don't stop other people to continue watching this drama. I've been expecting this drama for so long, so may be I will get back to it later, after I gather myself 😂. I also realised that most sites such as Asianwiki and My Drama List also didn't put content rating for this drama til one or two days ago.

@ryunami

I wouldn't worry about that. I ended up finishing the first part, but my opinions on some of the scenes still stand. Also, it looks like we have a bunch of unhinged characters just for the sake of it. I don't really think that there is much time for character development with how fast things are proceeding (also due, in part, to the time frame of the main story line). I hope that the second part is better.

I really, really wanted to watch this one, because the sets and costuming looked great from the itty bitty clips I saw- earthy tones, lots of gold and glinting armour amidst the grit, very atmospheric.
The time period fascinates me too, because it's so different from the conservative and candy-hued Joseon-era representation; admittedly the only other show I've seen from this era is Moon in the Day, which wasn't the greatest, but it did pique my interest.
So sad it isn't streaming in my region, and I hope it gets picked up soon.

OK.

Is this the k-drama version of Game of Thrones? I wasn't expecting the boobs.

Anyway, the first four episodes are very good and move at a fast pace. Before I knew it, I had ripped through all four episodes.

Strong performances by the actors especially the common faces we've seen in support roles of the various k-dramas.

Here is hoping the final four episodes are just as good or better.
