News bites: August 12, 2024

Lee MIn-ki, Lee Bo-young, Kang Ki-young

  • Lee Bo-young (Hide) and Kang Ki-young (Queen of Divorce) are reviewing offers for a medical black comedy playing fellow doctors who work together in a side job… assisting terminally ill patients with euthanasia. In a remake of the popular Canadian series Mary Kills People, Lee Min-ki (Crash) will reportedly be co-starring, pinning on his police badge once again as the detective investigating their clinic. This casting has my full attention, and here’s hoping that production led by PD Park Joon-woo (Crash, Taxi Driver) will treat the sensitive premise with care. [Newsen, YTN]

  • Dramaland has certainly been making room for medical stories to make their comeback, and Disney+ announced that Hyper Knife has been lined up for early 2025. Headlined by Park Eun-bin (Castaway Diva), Sol Kyung-gu (The Whirlwind), Yoon Chan-young (High School Return of a Gangster), and Park Byung-eun (The Bequeathed), the medical thriller has PD Kim Jung-hyun (Crazy Love, Awaken) at the helm with scripts by Kim Sun-hee (God’s Quiz 5). • On the fluffy side of fiction, tvN’s No Gain No Loss has come out with more promos, showcasing our self-sufficient heroine Shin Mina (Our Blues) in the newest teaser. In our self-service world, she can prepare her own romance, proposal, and even a wedding. But she will need a little extra help when our rom-com story begins on August 26, enlisting Kim Young-dae (Moon in the Day) to stand-in as her husband, uniting them in contract marriage. [MBC]

  • Netflix dropped a new teaser as well, welcoming the return of Player 456 – a.k.a. Lee Jung-jae (Chief of Staff, The Acolyte) – to the perilous playground of Squid Game 2. Making a merry and scary holiday season, the second installment launches on December 26 with the production reins remaining in the hands of filmmaker Hwang Dong-hyuk (The Fortress). [TV Report]
  • In the meantime, we can expect some chills from Netflix’s upcoming The Frog. Starring Kim Yoon-seok (Noryang: Deadly Sea), Yoon Kye-sang (The Kidnapping Day), Go Min-shi (Sweet Home 3), and Lee Jung-eun (Miss Night and Day), we learn a little more about our four leads in the recently released official trailer, before the mystery-suspense fully unfolds on August 23 next week. [MBC]
  • Also coming next week is Coupang Play’s Cinderella at 2AM, with a pragmatic Shin Hyun-bin (Tell Me That You Love Me) and puppy dog Moon Sang-min (Wedding Impossible) as our not-so-fairytale pair in the latest poster. Along with second leads Yoon Park (Doctor Slump) and Park So-jin (Delightfully Deceitful), the rom-com premieres on August 24 in the weekend slot. [Newsen]

No. 1 tackles a very delicate issue with a very talented ensemble. I will be looking out for this drama.

What can I say, I happened to watch a trailer of THE FROG on Netflix yesterday, and it looked… superb?! Maybe I’m now hooked on “visually bombastic thrillers” thanks to BITTER SWEET HELL… 🤔😅😂 The nature shots alone! The background music! The cast! I do hope this will be good.

1) He was a cop in Behind Your Touch, Crash and now this one? They could give him a place of honor at the Police at this point. Otherwise, the theme is really interesting. I don't know the law about it in Korea.

2) I don't really trust the realism in the story with this title... but I like the casting!

3) His style is awful... I'm happy that he cut his hair in the trailer.

4) Yeah, Gong Yoo giving slap will be back \o/

5) I like the place for the motel, it looks nice! For the story.... not sure.

6) Is she summoning Shin Min-Ah's romcom acting on this poster? Because I had a doubt during an instant.

1 has my attention. Very interesting subject matter and a dream casting. Is Min Ki a resident drama cop now? After Kwon Yul becoming a resident prosecutor 😅

It does seem like they are typecast to the role. Hopefully they will change it up in their next projects.

Finally!! Someone said it!!! I’ve felt that Lee Bo Youn has been typecast ever since God’s Gift - 14 Days and haven’t been able to get into her projects ever since despite how well the written premise seems to be, and that drama was 10 years ago (I had to look it up 🤯)

So Kang Ki Young is still getting lead roles? Good for him though his role in The Uncanny Counter keeps coming to mind and I truly didn't like him with that role. I recently saw that he was a bad guy in some episodes of While You Were Sleeping and I thought, see this works.

But what do I know, maybe this will be a good role and project for him to feel more comfortable as a lead.

I was not expecting a Kdrama remake of a Canadian show, especially from uri Global TV. Feeling oddly proud rn.

Lee Bo Young's drama is always a must watch for me. Plus the cast looks stellar.

The Frog looks interesting. I like mystery thrillers.

#1 doesn't interest me: "debate over whether Canada’s euthanasia regime is expanding beyond what Canadians may be comfortable with, a new study suggests MAID deaths in Canada could continue to expand for another decade, until one in 10 deaths involve a doctor-administered lethal injection." Shin Mina and Shin Hyun-bin have my attention for their fairytales. Who can generate a better chemistry with a seemingly mismatched Prince Charming!?

The medical dramas get a pass from me. 🙈
