Drama viewership ratings for the week of August 12-18, 2024

Serendipity’s Embrace came to an end this week with the mildness we saw from the drama and its ratings. And it’s the exact opposite for Good Partner, which is finally back to two episodes a week and hit not only 13.6% but then 17.7% (oi!) for its Saturday episode.

As for our many premieres this week, Your Honor immediately attracted attention and saw a big jump for its second episode, Perfect Family interrupted the dead silence of the Wednesday-Thursday slot, Black Out had a small premiere over on MBC, and DNA Lover had an even smaller one on TV Chosun. As for Love Next Door, it did pretty well for itself, hitting 6% by its Sunday episode (and sure to jump next week).

There sure is a lot of competition in the weekend slots.

Jang Na-ra has finally gotten her groove back, she is fabulous in Good Partner and the makjang-esque main storyline seems to be a crowdpleaser.

Excellent start for Love Next Door as well, the cast is great and it could another hit for tvN.

The era of 40% weekenders is clearly gone which is sad, but i blame weak writing for the underperformance of the last few

Ageed! I believe this is her highest rated drama since VIP, five years back.

I'm really loving her performance. The mildly amused tone she always has while dismissing someone is just 💯.

Jang Na Ra's hairstyle is on point with her character and I always find myself admiring her hair sway a little with her slight head tilts.

Yes the styling is also very appropriate. Doesn't go overboard.

I blame the executives at KBS for the decline of the Weekenders. They are obviously insisting on an emphasis on Makjang that is really inconsistent with the actual spirit of these family ensemble shows just as serial killers have no place in any romcom. In both cases someone needs to sit these idiots down and explain to them that these discordant elements do not add to the audience but rather drives audience away. The writers have obviously been told to include this stuff and unfortunately, they have complied.

I love Jang Nara ever since FATED TO LOVE YOU and she has never been better than in GOOD PARTNER.

Fellow beanies who got to watch Good Partner, are the episodes really good or do people like the revenge theme?

I actually don't think there is all that much of a revenge theme. There's definitely some (metaphorical) face-slapping delivered to the 'bad' guys but we also see a lot of the flaws of the FL herself.

I'd say the real narrative of the show is the mentorship between the two FLs as well as the realistic, messy nature of relationships. Each case of the week brings a lot of nuance in terms of how you see the different parties in a divorce.

Agreed! I really like how we get the different viewpoints or angles of each character in the different divorces- very not cookie cutter!

It is also written by a lawyer who specialised in divorce law itself. That brings the realism in the divorce cases

It is really good, and revenge may happen but is not a primary theme.

17.7% on a Saturday not Friday @admins.

Hope to see Jang Nara in the 2024 SBS Drama Awards. She deserves the nomination for Daesang and bringing in the huge ratings!

I am so happy to see Good Partners and Your Honor doing so well.

Happy for Your Honor's jump in its second episode.

Love Next Door is my current favorite, so hope its ratings continue to rise.

While I understand the importance of establishing the kids' story, I feel Perfect Family would have done better had it focused on Yoon Se-ah and Kim Byung-chul from its first episode.

Love Andante airs on Lifetime, too. Is it a cable tv channel? If so, are the ratings available for this drama?

Yes, Lifetime is a longstanding cable channel, but you might be able to subscribe through Prime (although I have not checked recently).

Not surprised with DNA lover rating. It was quite bad.

Love Next Door off to a good start. No surprise there. It can only go higher from here if they don’t mess it up too bad.

I haven’t watched Sunday’s episode of RITH. looks like it improved.

I too did not watch Ep 4, but I don't know how the ratings improved because Ep 3 was not funny because the entirety of the episodes focused on the villa tennants who are all great actors but are given annoying and nosy characters to play.

I guess it depends on what we expect about the show. For ex, I'm not watching it for the comedy. I'm watching for Mi Rae. Her relationship with her mom and the ML are beautiful and refreshing, imo. And I want to see her personal journey too.

Btw, in E4 the tenants didn't have that much screentime so maybe you'll enjoy it more. ^^

The ML is Ji Jinhee, the father. Or are you referring to Minho as the ML?

I mean I do see that the daughter is (to my surprise and vague annoyance) being turned into the FL while the original FL, the mother, isn’t being given much to do, but it’s a stretch I think to make Minho’s character the ML.

I didn't know the mom was the main character. So far the show seems from her POV and the focus is on her relationship with her mom, the ex-dad and Tae Pyeong.
So, for me, Mi Rae is the main character and FL. And I call Tae Pyeong ML just because he's her love interest. But I know the ex-dad is the main male character. I already dislike him, tho. So my focus is only on Mi Rae, her mom and Tae Pyeong. I guess for me he (ex-dad) isn't the ML. Tae Pyeong is.
But you're right, it makes more sense to just call Tae Pyeong the love interest or something else.

2

I’m sorry for my tone, @tabong. I guess my annoyance isn’t vague about the switch in FL and I took it out on you with my cranky reply.

3

Don't worry! That happens.

I didn't know anything about the show before watching it, so everything is new. Even the dad was a surprise to me. LOL
So don't worry, I get that there most be some things I don't notice but others do.

Yay for good ratings for Serendipity’s embrace last week. Impressive ratings for Love next door’s start and Good partner’s return.

Wow Bad memory eraser and DNA lover. I thought DNA lover was better than Bad memory for its opening episodes because it embraced the silly whilst Bad memory seemed to take itself seriously clearly they are both seen as equally bad in Korea. I wonder if they would better on a weekday when the competition is non existent

The competition is non-existent on weekdays because nobody watched tv on those days. The weekday audience is pickier than the weekend ones it seems. The presence of makjang is always a good motivation for the audience to tune in though as proven by TGBM and MMH.

And here I was thinking Sam Dal-ri at least had the "excuse" of having a dating history, while LND is just another boy that can't get over the shadow of someone he knew during his childhood/adolescence.

But tbh, Sam Dal-ri somehow managed to make everything even weirder than standard kdramaland. So I too think LND is looking better so far.

Another drama proves that men and women can't be friends LOL. okay, seriously the plot is plain...ML was in love with FL but lost his chance to confess and now she is back he takes it as a chance. On the other hand, FL has NOOOOOOO idea and gives too much skinship treating him as a younger brother.
I fast-forwarded many times, This always happens with some overhyped drama like Welcome to Samdalri, worst of evil, king the Land BLAH BLah. I Could not complete a single episode, though I tried.

Yeah, I don't know if the ML was in love with the FL the entire time (so this isn't a spoiler, lol), but I'm guessing he was. I'm sooooo tired of that dynamic.

"Another drama proves that men and women can't be friends" yep.

I didn't have any hope since the beginning, but they treated each other like siblings so I thought "maybe they ARE friends". By the end of episode one I knew I was wrong.

Maybe is because I tried to watch this one with zero expectations, but it didn't surprise me/annoy me. It felt more like "just another kdrama, being a kdrama".
I'm not expecting any girl to have real male friends in this land. They're all undercover fanboys with obsessive tendencies. But the girls I really feel bad for are the ones that date those men in all the years in between... *suddenly remembering all the details of why this trope sucks so much* LOL

It's men and women can't be friends if they're the leads because Seung-hyo and Mo-eum have managed to have a platonic friendship.

Oh, right. I wonder how are they going to portray their relationship.
Will they have scenes just the two of them? And will those scenes have nothing to do with SG? I hope so.

2

Like a Bechdel test but between opposite-sex friends. lol
Yes, I wonder if they hung out with just the two of them during all those years Seok-ryu was in the States.

2

LOL yeah. I had the same question.

I hope they make their relationship genuine.

2

I haven't watched Doctor Slump but I thought the same thing! 30 something year old neighbors, going through stuff, youthful connection, the promo poster of eating a sweet on a stick.

I can see how they're different but I did think the same thing. I guess it's good I haven't watched Doctor Slump so I don't compare it more.

I watched most of Slump and I see a few similarities, but LND is already miles ahead of it for me if only because the first two episodes did not include a single drunk scene.

DNA Losers and Bad Memories have earned those low ratings. I really hope this outbreak of incompetent, unethical, and stupidly unprofessional FLs will be over soon.

I think the difference is in LND, they're really friends even if they banter a lot. In Dr Slump, they were rivals and even if they cared for each other, they never showed it in the past.

Our Weekender has pulled out of its nosedive. People are noticing the changes in the show. The Olympic hiatus came at a good time.

GOOD PARTNER is a good show and deserves the love.

The second episode of ROMANCE IN THE HOUSE really was better than the first.

I too am loving LOVE NEXT DOOR.

The sad thig about DNA LOVER is that the second episode was much better than the first- and who is styling our FL? They should be fired.

That drop in DNA hater LMAO. I feel you Korean viewers.
I'm happy for Love Next Door and Romance in the House. I'm having a good time with both shows. Something in common in both shows is that the FL parents should get/stay divorced.
Perfect Family was fun too and I guess I wasn't the only one thinking that. Those numbers are good for the Wednesday-Thursday slot.
