News bites: July 4, 2024

Lee Sang-yi, Han Ji-hyun

  • Hip hip hurray for Lee Sang-yi (My Demon) who finally nabbed a leading role in TVING’s new romance CEO Menu, starring alongside Han Ji-hyun (Cheer Up). Still in the early stages, the series is curiously a spin-off of tvN’s not-yet-aired No Loss in Love (previously Because I Want No Loss) in which the two actors are the second leads. No Loss in Love is currently expected to air in August. [10 Asia, Newsen]

  • A new poster is out for MBC’s upcoming Black Out with Byun Yo-han (Uncle Samsik) beginning his search for truth, unable to remember the murders he supposedly committed. Premiering next month on August 16, the mystery-thriller and novel adaptation also stars Go Bo-kyul (The Heavenly Idol), Go Joon (Cheat on Me If You Can), and Kim Bora (Like Flowers in Sand). [MBC]

  • TV Chosun’s DNA Lover released a new poster as well, showcasing our fated perfect pair – because science – Choi Siwon (Death’s Game) and Jung In-sun (Grand Shining Hotel). With Lee Tae-hwan (Thirty-Nine) and Jung Yoo-jin (Celebrity) also joining the rom-com hijinks, the series will be coming to our screens in the weekend slot, starting August 17. [Sports Kyunghyang]
  • Coupang Play dropped their first stills for the rom-com Cinderella at 2AM, giving us our first peek at Shin Hyun-bin (Tell Me That You Love Me) and Moon Sang-min (Wedding Impossible) when everything was still lovey-dovey in their romance. The story unfolds on August 24, exploring whether love can still prevail once our pragmatic heroine chooses chaebol mom’s pretty cash instead of our pretty hero. [Sports Chosun]

  • It’s going to be a flourishing summer of ~love~ with tvN’s Serendipity’s Embrace also upcoming, reigniting a spark between Kim So-hyun (My Lovely Liar) and Chae Jong-hyeop (Castaway Diva, Eye Love You) in the new character teasers: found here and here. The coming-of-age rom-com is slated to premiere on July 22, taking over the Monday-Tuesday slot after Player 2 – Master of Swindlers. [Sports Donga]
  • SBS’s Good Partner continues promos with a big bundle of stills, keeping our main foursome busy at the firm. Starring divorce attorneys Jang Nara (My Happy Ending), Nam Ji-hyun (High Cookie), Kim Joon-han (Anna), and Pyo Ji-hoon (Mouse), the legal drama will be launching next week on July 12 in the weekend slot. #1 this is interesting. A sequel is planned before the actual drama airs. I like Lee Sang Yi and Han Ji Hyun so I will keep an eye on this.

#5 I am sorta anticipating Serendipity's embrace because of the leads.

1. A spin-off focused on the second leads of a show that hasn't aired yet? Has this ever happened before? Might give the original a chance when it airs.

I have learnt not just to say I like an actor but an actor in a particular role/s as two decades ago I met 2 incredibly famous actors for a project I was involved with and they were the most boring, charmless and one dimensional individuals despite both of them having played these series of incredibly captivating characters. I learned my lesson even if at times I forget it. Many actors try to subsume their own characters entirely in their roles and if they are excellent at their craft, their true selves never emerge but for their visuals, voice and mannerisms. Even these get changed for different roles.
Having said that, so far the 4 characters that I have seen Lee Sangyi play have moved me and made me think.

I think this is a good point as actors lend their voice, face and body to a character and when we love the character we can end up assuming things about the actor.

CEO Menu has already finished filming. It was filmed alongside No Loss Love. Why a spin off a secondary couple was filmed before the main drama airs is a mystery but my guess is someone has a powerful agency backing them to secure this spinoff. It will air exclusively on TVing. Lee Sangyi has a busy year filming No Loss Love and the spinoff simultaneously and currently filming Good Boy and later Bloodhounds 2.

1) I'm trying to understand how it will work regarding the main drama. Shin Min-Ah and Kim Young-Dae will be in this one too? The story takes place before? How many episodes will this drama get? I hope I won't be disapointed for Lee Sang-yi's first leading role.

1. I like the leads, doesn't matter that it is a spinoff.

2. This sounds interesting, but I feel I have to prep for it.

3 I have never liked Jun In Sun's acting and Siwon's last drama inspired nothing, so pass.

4.MSM, did nothing for me in the last drama he was in and I don't think this is the drama to me inspire me to watch him again.

5.Excited for this one!!!

6. Excited for this too!!

1. Interesting. I, like everyone else, am glad to see Lee Sang-yi as a lead!

2. I'm excited for this one, it's been a little while since I live-watched a thriller so I'm hoping it's available!

3. Have we finally reached the day when the FL has something similar to my profession and I have to choose between biting back my comments about how inaccurate everything is or being that person? Not sure this cast is worth that dilemma.

4. Tentatively interested.

5. VERY interested!

6. I'm a little divorce-attorneyed out but considering watching this just for how great Jang Nara looks with that haircut in all that black.

3.If its informative and light, comments about how wildly inaccurate it is can be good fun! Hold back if you have had a bad day and are nothing but grumbles, otherwise, let it rip!

Lee Sang yi is pretty charming, much more so than Kim young dae, who I've always found kinda flat, so I hope this works out well for him.

Shin Hyun bin was cute in hospital playlist but i find her a little listless as a main, focal character, Moon Sang min was cute in under the Queens Umbrella but his rich kdrama ml cliche didn't work for me in his first lead role, but the premise of their new drama actually seems unusual and interesting, so I guess I will give it a try and see if they can both hold their own this time.

Heavenly Idol was a career set back for Go Bo-kyul. It was her first major lead role. Afterward, I saw that this spring she was the third female support character in a small stage play in Seoul.

These all have my attention. It sounds like a good summer group to keep us interested and watching. Now let there be good dramas all summer long! A little romance, some comedy and a bit of lawyer land to keep us entertained and happy.

I'm excited to see my legal girlies at work. Also, I've always thought that Jang Nara and Kim Joon-han look a lot alike. It'll be interesting seeing them share a screen.

No. 2. MBC’s F/S drama BLACKOUT (14 eps). Still over a month (Aug. 16) before episode one airs. I have fingers crossed that MBC will do the right thing and first license it to Kocowa and then to Viki US.

(tvN’s S/S drama THE AUDITORS (12 eps) (Viki US) will just have finished on Aug. 11.)

Re No. 1 and Lee Sang-gi. I eagerly await his appearance as co-ML in BLOODHOUNDS SEASON 2 (Netflix).
