[Beanie Recs] More freaking fairy tales, please

Ahoy, Beanies! It’s time to gather your collective genius for a recommendation series that features you and your drama knowledge. We’ll drop a drama conundrum and leave it up to you to provide a drama rec, and the appropriate rationale behind it, be it long or short.

I really loved Dreaming of a Freaking Fairy Tale and after it ended a couple of weeks ago, I tried to find other similar dramas but came up empty-handed. Even though it was a simple story, maybe even cliché, it had such a campy and fun tone that it seemed fresh somehow. I laughed out loud way more than I usually do and now I’m looking for a show that will produce the same kind of silly, easy laughs. Any recommendations to fill the sweet but absurd void?

Radiant office was not exactly just fun, but it was nevertheless cute and adorable too.

Her imagination scenes were hilarious.

I started to watch Radiant office from a Beanie recommendation a while ago but got distracted with something else so forgot I was watching it so thanks for the reminder to go back. I quite enjoyed it so can’t believe it fell off my watchlist when my week is so empty these days.

Greasy Melo is the first thing that comes to mind. They tone down the absurdist in the second half, but there's a talking horse.

The closest thing I can think of (in terms of tone) might be Stealer the Treasure Keeper. It is a nicely self-aware drama (best ppl scenes I've ever seen) with a ML who is absolutely fine being the butt of the joke. It is campy and fun in a big way, but also has very sweet relationships and cool heist hijinks. Totally recommend.

Totally second this. It was a joyous romp and a very easy watch.

I'm watching this on Tubi at the moment and I really like it - it's an easy and very entertaining watch.

I have not watched Dreaming of a Freaking of a Freaking Fairy Tale, so I don't know exactly how it is, or of these shows will fit the bill, but I suggest Shopping King Louis (I found it very "fairy tale" like, in many aspects), Twinkling Watermelon and Fated to love you.

Ups, I meant Dreaming of a Freaking Fairy Tale 😄😄😄
Just noticed I had invented an even longer title.

Haha, I like your title. I agree about Twinkling Watermelon 😍 Been planning a re-watch. And maybe I should check out this Freaking Fairy Tale show.

Such a fun watch but dark side viewing. I watched at
https://www.dailymotion.com/search/dreaming%20of%20a%20freaking%20fairytale%20ep%201/videos
There weren’t lots of adds and I don’t have to down load lots of other apps as some had suggested and could watch on my iPad. At the time I couldn’t watch ep.7 or 8 but understood the story enough to skip at this time.
I hope Netflix or Viki will announce they are picking up soon.
Closest show I watched to it was strong women- just skip all parts with killer

Not a Kdrama, but LOST ROMANCE is similar to Freaking Fairy Tale is it's fluffiness and yet, real romance and feels. Feel free to fast forward through his family stuff--IMO it's not essential to the plot and kinda a bummer although the sister's outfits are often fabulous--but the main story is so much fun. Marcus Chang and Vivian Sung have amazing chemistry and the play and the swoon are great..

I second the opinion and would like to add that the drama also gave me the biggest SLS ever.

I think Business Proposal is a light, simple, and fun watch (bonus point: 12 episodes). It is the only one that came to my mind when I read the prompt.

This is the other one I was considering recommending! I think it works too because it’s sort of making fun of its own tropes as it goes, you know? The classic “I reserved this entire designer store to buy you the perfect outfit” scene is flipped a little because ML is doing it so that his grandfather doesn’t suspect his relationship is fake, but we still get the scene!

Good suggestions. Right now the Viki subscription is on hold and using Netflix so I'll try Be Melodramatic. Thanx!!

I would also add on Gaus Electronics - very funny, campy, another stiff, sundre CEO male (who is in disguise). This very much reminds me of the same tone. Really recommend it.

Not a fairy tale, but for Jun + sweet but absurd, try IMITATION!

Haven't watched Imitation, but Jun + sweet is also Please Don't Date Him, and Jun + absurd is also Let Me Be Your Knight!

Now I have to put Imitation on my list!

It doesn't get much fluffier than the first ten minutes of today's Sweet Mobster.

There are a lot of great recs on this thread! For absolutely silly and absurd, I'd also recommend <The Sound of Your Heart (the original one - it's on Netflix) and Welcome to Waikiki. Both made me laugh out loud, and I've lost track of how many times I've watched The Sound of Your Heart. Business Proposal might be the closest in tone and content to Freaking Fairytale. Stealer: The Treasure Keeper also has a similar, goofy sense of humor (you can find it for free on the Tubi streaming app). Gaus Electronics has similar humor, but is a little more sharp and less warm. Also, as another Beanie pointed out, I've been laughing as much at My Sweet Mobster - maybe more!!

The sound of your heart really was ridiculous and I loved it, I cried with laughter more than once. It is just random events in one family but some of those events are beyond funny.

Me too!!! It's just silly, ridiculous good fun 😁 I also love that the short episodes are pretty self contained, and each one does two "sketch" stories - it makes it really easy to rewatch 😄👍

I haven't seen Dreaming of a Freaking Fairy Tale, and some of the shows with camp that first came to mind have been mentioned (Chief Kim and Gaus, of course), but I'll throw in Haeundae Lovers as a nice lighthearted show, no serial killers.

If you want to se2 Jun in a fun role, I would recommend Imitation. But if its campy laugh out loud fun, Chief Kim, Gaus Electronics and Mr Queen fits the bill.

Its Okay to Not Be Okay has a fairy tale-like feel but not necessarily campy.

Freaking fairy tale reminds me of all the old k dramas I love because it's cute and funny! So here comes all the old rom coms I live so much!!

1. DELIGHTFUL GIRL CHUN HYANG - trust me on this, it's hella fun to watch
2. Love to hate you - ok this is not old at all but wow this is a very well done rom com, it's funny, it's cute, it's fast paced, the leads communicate and it touches on feminism too
3. Weightlifting fairy Kim Bok Joo - do you like messi? This is really cute and funny and sweet! It's like a marshmallow ❤️
4. Marriage, not dating - this has some *toilet* jokes too hahaha
5. Jealousy incarnate - Jo Jung Suk is hilarious
6. The Master's Sun - other than a tinge of horror, this drama also has a rich male lead
7. The Greatest Love - I remember binging this and couldn't stop the binge. It's hong sisters, it must be funny.

Yeah, the Hong sisters are reliably funny (My Girl and Fantasy Couple are a couple of my favorites). Except maybe Big. I don't remember anything from that.

omgosh I'm not the only one who's seen *Big* LOL
It's one of my comfort shows, I've seen it 3x and I'm hankering for a 4th rewatch. It's so goofy and nonsensical and despite the terrible plot holes and even lazy writing it brings me immense joy LOL

I haven't seen it probably since it aired, so I could use a rewatch. I like the leads so I must have enjoyed it somewhat.

i HATE the FL. lol she is AWFUL. so stupid and whiny and confused and dumb. hahaha i used to hate the actress as well but after i saw her in *boys over flowers* i saw her acting potential. i don't even know her name, that's how bad i hated her LOL but I mean, teenage Gong Yoo being cute? i cannot resist.

1

Big's FL is Lee Min Jung, Lee Byung Hun's wife in real life. I haven't watched Big because I heard it was very very very bad back in the days when it was airing. Other than Big, I know many people hated Hong Sisters' Warm and Cozy but I kinda enjoy it. So probably I should also give Big a try 😂

Big is cute if you ignore the nonsensical plot holes LOL it's also a noona romance which people don't like and it's kind of weird but it's an adult in a teenage body... complicated. it's still cute and fun if you ignore the bad writing. it's a guilty pleasure kind of watch :D

I forgot to add one more! Splash Splash Love! It's only 2 eps but it's a gem. Very very funny but touching at the end. Pacing is fast and everything ties together. A lot of meta scenes.
