Drama viewership ratings for the week of May 27- June 2, 2024

Things are moving in the Monday-Tuesday slot, with Lovely Runner hitting 5.8% with its finale after slow but steady growth during its run. Speaking of slow and steady we’re seeing the same for Crash, which has just hit 5% after premiering at 2.2%.

In the midweek slot, Frankly Speaking sinks yet more, leaving some question marks over the viability of this slot for dramas — versus the weekend, where the competition is hot, and Connection has proven ready to take the lead.

Glad to see: Crash and Connection are doing rather well. I can't wait to see thr ratings for Player 2. Crime thrillers are doing rather well this time.

Crime thrillers with a slice of comedy are the new rom-coms with a side of serial killers. 😂
I love this problem of plenty.

Yeap, I love my thrillers with a side of friendship and comedies too.

Much prefer crime thrillers with a slice of comedy than rom-coms with a side of serial killers! I'd rather know going in I'm getting crime rather than it be a surprise.

😂 💯 Crime and comedy go hand-in-hand much better than a serious crime show which is a different kind of vibe like Through the Darkness.

It is high time to retire the serial killer trope from rom-coms. As Lovely Runner has taught us a ToD can resolve in less than 5 mins what 15 episodes and plot armor couldn't. 🙃

I mean you need a different kind of mindset for a serious crime show. There is a reason why Kim Nam-gil won a Daesang for it. 👏👏👏

As run-of-the-mill crime + comedy is a good vibe.

2

This year I am seeing two prospective winners for SBS daesang:
1. Ji Sung (serious crime thriller, Connection)
2. Kim Nam Gil (for Fiery Priest 2, he won his first SBS Daesang through Fiery Priest 1, which is a crime +comedy)

2

@peiyeelai I fully support both your nominees 💯. If left to me I would award them both. 🙌
Choosing between them is an absolute impossibility.

1

@peiyeelai Also I don't know why but I feel Fiery Priest 2 will be "serious crime". I am a fan of the comedy in the first part and it didn't take away from the seriousness of the drama. Let's see. Also no gambler Nun this time, right?

2

I don't think so as Park Jae Bum tends to inject some humor in the drama scripts that he writes, although the PD might be the same PD as Through the Darkness. @seeker

2

@peiyeelai IMO there would be no Fiery Priest without the trademark humor. I'm happy either way. You do have a point about PD-nim.

Part 2 is something we all have been eagerly waiting for a long time.

Yay!! Lovely runner, the writing in the second half made zero sense in terms of the time travel stuff, but i doubt anyone cares it was a romance first and formost and thats why people watched.

Connection continues its upward momentum, really enjoying so far plus Jisung is a favourite of mine (his wife too!)

Usually one does care above plot logic but the blinding radiance of the two suns Sun Sol dazzled us. ❤😊

same, thank goodness for a romance drama that remembered what draws the viewers (i.e. less of serial killer stuff, more of swoon) and delivered on that for a finale. They scored over 7 percent in the Seoul area too which is really encouraging.

I don't care about whether the logistics and mechanics or time travel were completely explained, they broadly hang together and were just the background for our SolSun and I have no complaints on that front.

If this of all dramas had pulled a Queen of Tears i.e. forgetting or memoryholing the fact that these two are actually attracted to each other, I would have probably thrown something. Buut fortunately, that didn't happen and we got plenty of Sol/Sunjae OTP loveliness and affection to make up for all the stuff that went before.

A rom-com where there is both "rom" and "com" aplenty is a sureshot rating garner. Thankfully Carry Sun-Jae followed this lesson.

Maybe, a different drama from a different genre will help the Wed-Thursday slot. Looking forward to watch either a medical/legal/saeguk on a Wednesday and Thursday.

It is sad...plus I think people opt to watch for the dramas that are available on the OTTs too. That is why I hope there will be another drama from another genre that will bring in the numbers.

I do hope a drama comes along to rock this spot. If Mon-Tues can get 5-6% ratings no reason Wed-Thurs cannot achieve it too.

I want them back too. Medical dramas like Hospital Playlist are more than able to bring in the 10+-20+ ratings, even on a Wednesday-Thursday time slot.

I think I ask this each week so sorry for being repetitive but how can a time slot with no drama competition do badly? Is the show really that lacking that it can't draw in even casual curiousity?

A part of me wish some broadcaster would be stubborn and put a weekend type show on the Wed/Thurs slot just to see why that slot has such bad luck in recent years. Like could Taxi Driver defeat that curse?

What type of variety shows are airing on Wed/Thur? I saw viewership is down for music shows too so what are people watching?

I'm feeling kinda bad for actors and crews who are dependent on viewership.

Wasn't Queen of Divorce Wed/Thurs? It did really well if I remember correctly (it was an awful drama though so maybe people are now wary of putting their faith in this slot?)

Ou Weekender should be seeing better numbers than this. Dramatically, it is much better than the two which preceded it and is even better than the same writer's YOUNG LADY AND GENTLEMAN which was the last weekender to be a ratings hit. Perhaps tastes have changed in the ROK.

CRASH deserves the love it is getting but ATYPICAL FAMILY is better than the ratings would suggest (although they are not bad).

I guess after real and live your life, viewers got turned off and stoppef watching weekenders

I'm wondering how Atypical Family is faring in Korea, because the characters are all really complex and flawed.

5

I wondered about that as well. Even as the character arcs come to a close, I see they remain flawed (for example, the ML). I think it brave, but the discomfort with that is evident everywhere, even here.

Well said. The characters aren't likable so it is hard to relate emotionally to them. It doesn't help that only one week is left so any attempts at character growth will fall flat.

3

Yes, no one is black and white and everyone is morally grey - even the antagonists. I agree that it's brave and IMO interesting, but definitely not everyone's cup of tea.

2

Re: Atypical Family: Ratings in Korea are nothing to write home about. Its highest point was two weekends ago and it has slowly sunk.

If I enjoy a couple, I can ignore nonsense (and the main plot of meaningless super-powers is nonsense, but could have been fun nonsense), but this drama isn't fun and I dislike the ML character so much that I put it on hold. I'll re-watch at the end for my favorite characters.

I am happy that Lovely Runner got its best ratings during its finale episode.

Also good to see Crash and Connection are getting better ratings. While sad to see Frankly Speaking getting low ratings for W TH. I was hoping they would get better ratings so more dramas would air mid-week.

I am just loving Atypical Family, and I don't understand the dislike :(
I'm always curious when a show I personally love tanks, while the one I dropped in literally 5 mins, eats up the popularity charts.
But I like being the weird one haha.

This time round you have a few beanies in the loving the complexity that is Atypical. We can be full of contradictions re the types of character behaviours that we will tolerate from show to show. I walked from Atypical re the fat shaming and Neglect of an actual child and yet watched The good bad mother’s horrific neglect of her adult child, and Oh my Venus which had fat shaming as a theme too.

True... What one person will say is horrific acting, I will label as brooding and sexy! Case in point, Kim Young Dae in Moon in The Day- the hate that show, and he, received- my word! And there I was cowering in the corner, whispering, hey show isn't that bad 😂. Of course, I wasn't yet on DB then- maybe I'd have been a bit more vocal then. Opp is true for me of Lovely Running 🤭

I didn't think Moon in the Day was that bad either. But I'm partial to Kim Young-dae. Everyone seemed to prefer the sageuk flashbacks, but I preferred the present-day storyline.
