Premiere Watch: The Atypical Family

Time slot: Saturday-Sunday
Broadcaster: JTBC
Genre: Fantasy, romance
Episode count: 12
Global streamer: Netflix

Reasons to watch: I didn’t know how much I a) missed Jang Ki-yong and b) needed this pairing until I saw the press conference shots for The Atypical Family. Tagged squarely as a fantasy romance, I am going to hold them to that genre designation, because more than superpowered main characters, I want to see a darn good love story play out here. With a bit of magical superpowers thrown in to shake things up. While our talent behind the camera — having brought us projects like Welcome and Snowdrop — doesn’t exactly fill me with glee, there’s something about this premise that might just harness the perfect amounts of ennui, healing vibes, family dynamics, and romance.

TL;DR: Jang Ki-yong and his family are no longer heroes… until Chun Woo-hee comes and shakes them up

Side effect of mandatory military service on k-drama fans: Immediate need to watch the first post-service drama

I agree it’s probably when fans will be most forgiving so it would be a good time for an to try something unusual because if it doesn’t work fans will say it’s the negative effect of military service, however if it does work it’s put down to the positive impact of the time away.

I'm truly fascinated by this phenomena. I don't have the data to back me up, but it seems the post-service drama is an event and has some prestige behind it (sometimes the drama-right-before as well). Like there's a lot riding on it. It rarely seems like a mindless move and I've rarely seen the returning drama be bad quality. Like the actor wouldn't dare.

I will be giving this a 4 episode trial as I love the idea of it and look forward to seeing if the execution lives up to expectation as I need something to fill the massive Queen of Tears hole in my weekend now.

I... Didn't really like the premiere. I found it very slow and dull (the muted colours didn't help) but I feel most betrayed by the story itself. I expected a healing fantasy romance, but this is more Moving x Parasite, as others have pointed out. This could get very angsty very fast, which is not what I was in for.

But seeing as everyone loved this except for me, I'll think watch the rest of the episodes a try? Maybe?

Glad to see someone else feel the same. Definitely not what I was expecting from this drama.

I liked ep 1! The visuals and music have drawn me in, along with the twists so far. I actually gasped when the bottle fell- it was so unexpected! Sad emo-boi Jang Ki Yong is really beautiful, and that house is quite stunning. Waiting to see what's in store in the next eps - I wish Netflix had dropped it all at once- I'd have binged it for sure, so good for my sleep schedule, I suppose!

Episode 1 has hooked me. I love everything: the quirky damaged family, the scammers, and the magnificent house. Of course the house gives shades of Parasite, but the house in this drama is even more amazing. And Jang Ki-yong... He's giving me small flashes of his character in My Mister, although his back story is going to be very different and he's not abusive in this, just pitiful. I'm definitely in for this drama. It's perfect for what I've been needing from a k-drama.

I wasn't interested or excited about this show to begin with but I put it on anyway "just cause" and it didn't draw me in at all.

Just visually, nothing appeals to me (especially the fat costume & make up which reminds me of Big Momma' House). I wonder if that is the same actress I've seen wear fat make up before (but I can't remember the series. I remember it was a sageuk, involved secret admirer letters, and a scene on the water. Her character fell in the water and was saved by someone of a lower social class (I think) and she or her court ladies berated him for touching her or something)

I think you're talking about Park Bo-Gum's sister in Moonlight Drawn by Clouds. The actress was Jung Hye-seong.

Not a fan of the fat suit, but I daresay it'll go soon, given Claudia Kim's career (modelling, as well as a number of reasonably significant roles in both Korean and international series and movies, including Avengers, Fantastic Beasts and Marco Polo). Other than that, I liked these first two episodes quite a lot. I've gotten a lot more ruthless about pulling the plug on a show I have to force myself to watch, but I watched both episodes in one sitting and my interest never wavered.

I believe i´m slow witted, because after ep 1, some netz saying to drop this drama, because of the money hunting scammer, while Gwijoo is depressed and his pityfull daughter.
And many complained about fat shaming , because i didn´t notice the resembled family, were scammers i rewatched it three times.
I hope nobody shoots me, but i like it very much. Hoping they discover the scamming, and justice is served .
