News bites: May 18, 2024

Jo Boa, Kim Soo-hyun

  • Casting continues for the upcoming black comedy Knock Off (working title), with Jo Boa (Destined With You) and Lee Jung-eun (A Bloody Lucky Day) now considering offers to potentially join Kim Soo-hyun (Queen of Tears). In a story about the designer knock-offs market industry during the 1997 IMF crisis and the immediate years following, the impressive lineup reportedly includes Jo Woo-jin (Narco-Saints), Kim Eui-sung (Black Knight), and Kang Mal-geum (Gyeongseong Creature) among other talents. • Last month, the medical spin-off Resident Playbook starring Go Yoon-jung (Death’s Game) had been pushed back to the latter half of 2024. But tvN has now announced that the broadcast dates are undecided, presumably due to the as of yet unresolved medical conflicts in South Korea. Once The Midnight Romance in Hagwon concludes its run, the new office series The Auditors (previously The Audit) with Shin Ha-kyun (Evilive) will be taking over the weekend slot this summer. • New character stills have dropped for JTBC’s upcoming rom-com My Sweet Mobster, featuring our title’s ex-gangster Uhm Tae-gu (Hometown) and children’s content creator Han Sun-hwa (Work Later, Drink Now 2). The webnovel adaptation premieres on June 12 in the Wednesday-Thursday slot, with writer Na Kyung, PD Kim Young-hwan (Today’s Webtoon), and PD Kim Woo-hyun (Life) leading production. • Over on SBS, the newest teaser for Connection reveals that someone’s been tracking our hero Ji Sung (Adamas) for quite some time, embroiling him in the crime-thriller’s story with Jeon Mi-do (Thirty-Nine), Kwon Yul (Longing for You), and Kim Kyung-nam (The One and Only. Launching next week on May 24, the series has PD Kim Moon-kyo (Trolley) at the helm with writing by Lee Hyun (Diary of a Prosecutor). [Newsen]
  • Also premiering on May 24, MBC’s black comedy-mystery Bittersweet Hell came out with a new teaser as well, where famed psychologist Kim Hee-sun (Remarriage & Desires) is forced to face uncomfortable truths about her family. Also starring Lee Hye-young (Big Bet), Kim Nam-hee (Chicken Nugget) and Yeonwoo (Numbers), production has scripts by Nam Ji-yeon (So I Married an Anti-fan) with PD Lee Dong-hyun (Doctor Lawyer) and PD Wie Deuk-kyu (Mobius: The Veil) co-directing. [MBC]
  • JTBC’s The Woman Who is Different by Day and Night brings us new stills, allowing us some more time with Lee Jung-eun’s (A Bloody Lucky Day) daytime half of our two-bodied heroine – who transforms back into Jung Eun-ji (Work Later Drink Now 2) when evening comes. Together with Choi Jin-hyuk (Numbers), the fantasy rom-com will be coming to our screens on June 15 next month. [JTBC]

1: I'll at least start anything with Jo Bo-a -- if she's there.

2: So shows about medical residents are in critical condition, and instead we get The Auditors. Sorry, now I can't get my mind off Terry Pratchett's auditors.

All the others: Nothing grabs me.

I guess we’re safe from medical dramas for now, but it’s a pity for GHJ and the rest who are involved.

Too bad Korean school bullies can't walk off the job in protest for the government relaxing bullying standards. I wouldn't mind for all school bullying dramas to be put on hold.

One day, we might get a Korean adaptation of a Discworld novel and it will be glorious.

4 out of 6 are on my potential watchlist. The one I know I will like is the one I fear may never appear. It must be hard for all those involved in the production. I hope the newer cast members can still get other roles without the exposure they would have gained. I wonder if they would be able to treat it like the shows that don’t air in Korea due to scandals but are still released globally.

1. I hope not. I do not like Jo Boa as an actress at all and am allergic to watching her onscreen.

She's definitely a non-favorite of mine and if she's the romantic lead, there's not enough in the overall story to entice me.
