60th Baeksang Arts Awards: Winners

Believe it or not, another year of the Baeksang Arts Awards is upon us, and the 60th installment of the ceremony took place on May 7, 2024 in Seoul.

Disney+’s excellent, ensemble sci-fi series Moving takes the Daesang (Grand Prize) this year. And while the nominations skewed a bit on the ~edgy~ side of the dramaverse, it’s great to see all these talented actors named. And it’s particularly nice to see our winning rookie actors. *Applause*

P.S. Special shout-out to Lee Yi-kyung. I’ve never been so happy to see a nomination.

I agree with most of these, and am especially happy for Namgoong Min, Lee Jung-ha (almost didn't recognize him now that he lost the Moving weight), and Yoo-na. I didn't see "Mask Girl," but I've liked both these actors in other things and no one else in those categories jumped out at me. I am a little disappointed that Honey Lee prevailed over both Ra Mi-ran and Ahn Eun-jin. It's not like she didn't deserve this award, per se, but I don't think her work in "Knight Flower" was more impressive than what these other actresses did in much more challenging roles.

The only real WTF moment for me is that the director of "Worst of Evil" won over the director of "Moving." I get that fight scenes can be challenging to both choreograph and film, and WoE had a ton of them. But it fell woefully short on characterization and continuity, whereas "Moving" did everything well.

I need to read thrice to believe it’s Worst of Evil that won best director.

I haven't watched Knight Flower so technically I shouldn't be commenting.
But since when has common sense ever stopped me?

I'm venturing a thought: Perhaps the Baeksangs thought this was the best we'll ever get from Lee Hanee and they also thought Ahn Eun-jin could tackle ever more impressive roles?

I think that's a logical assumption. They may be thinking that Ahn Eun-jin is young and talented enough that she will have multiple chances at this award in the future. That doesn't mean they think Lee Hanee won't, but they may have been thinking that they were awarding not just her work in "Knight Flower," but in many other dramas over the years for which she didn't win.

seems more a case of who was the crowd puller and main attraction

Hani carried her drama... because others were unknown actors

NMK relatively more than the FL

same reason why they gave KSH an award for QoT but no nomination to FL

very fair point, I didn't think about it. Now how do I upvote a comment twice?

0

My point exactly. Honey Lee carried a drama with a rookie ML and average writing. But Ahn Eun-jin had a strong writer and director supporting her and a veteran actor as ML.

4

This is an excellent point.

Honey Lee being the complete focal point of her drama may have also played a part in her win, not to mention she performed her own stunts and did her own fight choreography 6 months after giving birth at age 40!

AEJ had a lot more going for her but Honey is almost at veteran status in her acting career, definately points to consider.

7

When it comes to sageuk, Honey Lee is exceptional. No actor is as well trained as Honey Lee in Korean traditional culture and entertainment, which she majored at the most prestigious university. In addition to her expertise, she is a natural in comedy, making her all-around excellent in this role.

I love Eun-jin, a talented actress with a bright future, but competing against Honey Lee in this genre put her at a disadvantage. While we only consider acting, the judges have other elements to evaluate.

I almost dropped MD in the first few episodes. It felt a bit off-putting at first, but it grew on me.

Yoo-na totally deserved that!!
Happy for Lee Jung-ha!!

I loved La Ha-Nee in Knight flower, but Ahn Eun-jin played a much more complex role and I think she did a phenomenal job there.

Namgoong Min Was a no contest! Well deserved.

Nobody expected "Moving" to be as good as it was when it was announced, its wins are deserved imo, it was a grear character driven drama that was simply dressed up fight scenes and special effects.

Happy for Namgoong Min!!!, i am going to secretly pretend that he won for Chief Kim instead.

Honey Lee's win is a pleasant suprise, comedic performances almost never get recognised by "serious" awards shows, im glad she won, she deserved it, and Lee Jong-wons reaction to her win and speech was adorable.

I'm also happy for Namgoong Min. I've always liked him before "My Dearest," but he ventured into an unfamiliar sageuk role, and I love his acting very much. His first sageuk was average, and I didn't expect him to revisit the genre. I enjoy rooting for actors who take on challenging roles.

That was well said about Honey Lee, and she was consistent from beginning to end. Having a shorter drama worked to her advantage.

Thank you @soyesterday! MBC’s KNIGHT FLOWER was my first Honey Lee drama and (with the exception of HP2 and frankly I don’t remember him in it) my first Lee Jong-won drama. They were both terrific in KF.

O/T. Just yesterday I finished Lee Jong-won’s 2019 mini series OUR BASEBALL (Ten 15(ish) min. eps. available subbed on Youtube). It is one of the best sports kdramas I have seen. Just beautiful. He is a bit thinner and doesn’t sport the long locks (like in the video) but is part of a great ensemble cast.

Yoo-na's speech made me tear up a little!! Also props to the stylist, she looked like a fairy ✨

I've not watched Knight Flower so I'm biased for sure but honestly was surprised Ahn Eun-jin didn't win Best Actress because she delivered the performance of a lifetime in My Dearest . I had my fair share of qualms with the plot in the second half but not for one second was I not fully immersed/absolutely forgot I was even watching a drama and the result of the passion and dedication both lead actors put into their craft. Nevertheless, congrats all the same to Lee Hanee - she's a fantastic actress and a win is a win all the same 👏

Speaking of surprises, I thought My Dearest would take out the Grand Prize and Moving would be a strong contender for Best Drama but it was the opposite!! Go Moving team, I'm so happy they're getting the accolades they deserve!

DB is mostly about dramas, but the film section also involves some drama and film actors who alternate between the small and big screen.
My favorite part of this award show was seeing two of my favorites, Tang Wei, announce and present the Best Actress award to Kim Go-Eun. I got teary-eyed listening to Go-Eun's acceptance speech. I worried about her after watching her disappear into this dark role in "Exhuma." The shamanism ritual was chilling and creepy. It gives me nightmares.

Thank you for posting as wasn’t on my radar. You’re right that she has gone through a traumatic and profound experience but am glad she has come through. That was an emotional and moving experience. You are the best! Thank you so much! The other link didn't make much sense since they omitted some parts. I love the respect that these film actors have for each other. Some Korean friends said Tang Wei asked Go-eun if she could hug her. She had mentioned before that she was a fan of Kim Go-eun. Tang Wei is a major talent in the film industry, and she won the Best Actor award for both Baeksang and Blue Dragon.
I hope she is doing better, too. As she said, her closest friend, Baek Jin-gyeong, passed away last year. She had been her supporter since the beginning of her career.

I'm not a fan of horror films, but when they are done right, like "The Wailing," I'll watch them. "Exhuma" was another great film. I'm still trying to digest it and will need a second or third viewing. I'm glad I watched "Shogun" first since the background history of both Japan and Korea in the 1600s is still fresh in my mind.

Shout out to Lee Do-hyun for winning his first Baeksang film award. I've never finished any of his dramas before, but he deserved his award, too. The great Choi Min-Shik and Yoo Hae-jin, one of the best-supporting actors in Chungmuro, were also nominated. Yay for the Grave Avengers. Such a talented cast!!!

He's won best new actor for both tv and film. Time for him to win best actor in both categories. In the next 5 years he should be able to achieve it.

1

He is still a new actor in films. He has a very long way to go before getting close to Yoo Ah In's level of acting prowess.

Take the best actors from the film category's nominees this year, for example.

Choi Min-shik
Lee Byung-hun
Kim Yoon-seok
Hwang Jung-min (winner)
Jung Woo-sung

Jung Woo-sung has improved a lot, but I wouldn't put him at the same level as the other 4 actors.

I think Lee Do-hyun has a better chance of winning Best Actor in Dramaland than Chungmuro.

2

Yeah but there have been many complaints about the lack of new blood in films. The same set of actors keep getting nominated year after year. He's extremely talented and they might give him the award just to inject some new blood into the industry. His first movie got 10 million admissions and his drama broke 14% digits in the same year. He'll have many good scripts and roles to choose from for a long time.

1

It can be pretty challenging to become one of those highly sought-after film actors. The youngest was YAI, and that's it. Even the supporting roles are dominated by the likes of Jo Jin Woong, Kwak Do Won, Park Jeong Min (my fave), Ryu Seung Ryong, Yoo Hae Jin, etc. It's hard for the new actors to get in through supporting roles.

Song Joong-ki, Kim Nam Gil, Ju Ji Hoon, Jang Hyuk, Gong Woo, Hyun Bin, Jo Jung Suk, Kim Mu Yeol, and more are not given enough good roles for a stable film career. I hope Byun Yo Han and Ryu Jun Yeol will make it.

4

Kiara, thanks for sharing your insights. It is a pity that younger film actors are not able to have a stable and self-sustaining film career. As venerated as these older male actors are, succession planning is also vital in this area of arts. The hierarchical nature of SK arguably asserts its power through the older actors expecting and receiving high regard. It can be frustrating and confining for the younger talented film actors even if they will never publicly voice it.
Is my impression correct that the influential film actors are overwhelmingly middle age to much older male actors?

2

@dancingemma The last 5 actors to win best actor are Lee Sungmin, Lee Byunghun, Yoo Ahin, Sol Kyungu and Ryu junyeol. Lee Byunghun and Sol Kyungu have won the award multiple times and also won the Daesang and they get nominated every other year. Other popular winners are Ha Jungwoo, Song Kangho, Ryu Seungryun and Choi Minshik who have also won the Daesang and get nominated on a frequent basis. Han Jungwoo took a hit after his drug scandal but he is still popular. Ahn Sungki was a jury favorite at one point winning the award consecutively from 1982-85. The overall pool of actors who get nominated for best actor hasn't been very diverse in the past decade but you also see it movies. The same few faces over and over again in different combinations with one or two new faces thrown in for new blood. Even those new faces are mostly in their mid or late 30s like Im Siwan, Park Seojoon and Ryu Jeonyeol. Yoo Ahin might have to giveup his career permanently after the drug scandal because the public opinion is not in his favor.

0

@kiara Lee Dohyun should make it. He has the natural talent and intuition that many of them didn't have at his age. If given the right scripts he could win it in the next 5 years.

I didn’t either. She was holding in her grief so tightly but it was impossible not to witness it in every gesture she made and word that she spoke. I hope that since her friend’s death, she has had therapy, was surrounded with ample love, had distractions and got to have some restorative fun.

3

I'm happy for Yoo Na and Lee Jung Ha. I can see them having a bright career.
Yoo Na was easily the best part of Kidnapping Day, and Jung Ha was also a big part of the charm of Moving.

Most of the categories repeat the same dramas over and over again. But it's interesting how in this repetition of dramas, even a few actors from shows of this year (2024) got mentioned once, but Jang Dong Yoon didn't get even a nomination after being in 4 shows, and being completely incredible in one of them.

I screamed so loud when Lee Do-hyun won Best New Actor for Exhuma. He's now won Best New Actor in both the television and film categories. Kim Go-eun won Best Actress as well, so go Exhuma.

-Best Actor: I'm very happy for Namgoong Min. I was rooting for Ryu Seung-ryong, so I'm happy that Moving got the Daesang, which kinda makes up for Han Hyo-joo being snubbed.
-Best Actress: I did not expect for Honey Lee to win over Ra Mi-ran, whom I'd predicted to win, though I was rooting for Ahn Eun-jin.
-Best Supporting: Ahn Jae-hong and Yeom Hye-ran deserved their awards, and while I was rooting for Yoo-na to win Best New Actress, Lee Han-byeol was outstanding in Mask Girl. Her part was the best part of the drama.

Like @missvictrix, I was also so happy for Lee Yi-kyung to be nominated, and Song Ha-yoon would 100% have gotten a nomination if not for her scandal.

Congratulations to the winners. It was neck and neck in some categories while some nominations were a little bit off.
My main gripes are best writing and best directing especially the latter. IMO Revenant was more deserving of the writing award and despite dropping Worst of evil, I don't think it portrayed something impressive enough for best director award. The Matchmakers and My Dearest were far more deserving.
Best Actor for me Nam Goong-min since the first episode of My Dearest aired so I am thrilled to bits now that he really won.
As for Best Actress, I was rooting for Honey Lee since the beginning. I can understand fellow beanies, though, for being disappointed that Ahn Eun Jin didn't win as her performance was amazing. But the two dramas were two completely different genres. AEJ's role was more layered and the drama had longer episodes while Knight Flower had shorter episodes and fewer details.
Best new actor and actress were clear winners though I hope Lee Jong-won will get more recognition in the future.
I haven't watched Mask Girl so I can't say anything regarding the supporting actor and actress.
Best Drama was a battle between My Dearest, Moving and Revenant. But in the end, it went to My Dearest, and the Daesang went to Moving. Which are totally deserving btw, yet it hurts how MD2 went a bit awry and the last few episodes of Moving didn't hit us emotionally as much as the earlier ones did.

It will be the low ratings and the calibre of the dramas that did get nominated, some shows suffer from the timing of their release and the competition. Yes I missed the nomination in best actor, surprised that was the only nomination and that it got in when it must have been still running when the nominations list went in.

1

I see. At least for the new actor category, I hoped TW will get nominated as Yi-chan was impressive.
As @Win said unfortunately TVN doesn't hold an awards ceremony but on a lighter front, at least QOT won't dominate the Baeksang next year. I would be really shocked if it had been nominated for the best writing category. Good Grief.
PS: can we start a petition from now so that they include Lovely Runner next year?

1
6
reply

Required fields are marked *

Lovely Runner will get a nomination for Byeon Woo Seok for best new actor since it’s his first drama. Maybe the writer will get nominated but I don’t see anyone else getting a nomination. Normally romcoms don’t get many acting nominations.

2

Choi Hyun-wook (Yi-chan) already got a Best New Actor nomination for Twenty-Five Twenty-One, so he can't be nominated for Best New Actor again.

3

Hopefully, Lovely Runner earn at least 2 nominations: Best Actress (Kim Hye-Yoon), and Best New Actor (Byeon Woo-Seok).

The challenge is that it aired FAR too early in the campaign season (it airs at the same time period when previous Baeksang awards were held...) so I'm a bit worried that the jury might skip/forget about it. Hopefully, I'm wrong on this.

2

Best actress is not possible for Lovely Runner. Romcom don't get best actress nominations even Jeon Do Yeon didn't get nominated for Crashcourse In Romance. Best actress will go to either Kim Taeri, Lim Ji Yeon, IU, Seo Hyun Jin or Kim Hye Soo. Maybe Han Hyo Joo and Park Bo Young will also get nominated. If Fiery Priest 2 is allowed nominations Honey Lee might get nominated. Kim So Yeon might get nominated for Quiet Sales if the drama gets good ratings. Its easy to predict most nominations for Baeksang because they have a type they prefer.

2

@emperors Lovely Runner is Byun Woo-seok's 11th drama and 5th main role (not counting a couple of short web dramas). I don't totally understand the rules for Best New Actor, but that might put him out of the running. I think it's related to the number of roles in a drama regardless of how long the actor has been working. An article in Soompi said, "For Best New Actor, those who have starred in no more than three productions were eligible to be nominated."

https://www.soompi.com/article/1653702wpp/60th-baeksang-arts-awards-announces-nominees

1

@Elinor Its his first lead role ever so they'll give him best new actor nomination for sure. His agency will make sure he gets a nomination due to sheer popularity because somebody has to pay to bring in those millions of votes for the popularity award which is why they allowed Ahn Eunjin to be nominated for the popularity award despite not being an actress. Its also why they allowed the last minute nomination of Kim Soo Hyun. It was a tight fight between him and Kim Seon Ho with over 5 million votes.

0

Next Baeksang will be dominated by Squid Game 2, Jeongnyeon and Lighy Shop. Maybe Ask the Stars if it releases will get some last min nomination like Queen of Tears did. Everything Comes True might get a nomination for best writer for Kim Eun Sook and When Life Gives You Tangeries will get some nomination too.

I'm betting on "Uncle Samsik" with Song Kang-ho and many other non-Netflix dramas with potential. I won't be surprised if Disney+ wins Best Drama or Drama Daesang again next year.

3

Uncle Samshik will likely get acting nominations only for Song Kang Ho and Byun Yo Han but it will get technical nominations for screenplay or something. Intimate Stranger is dark horse and Han Suk Kyu could walk away with Best Actor next year or they may give it to the jury favorite Lee Byung Hyun because he will a huge part of Squid Game 2. Best drama will be Jeongnyeon. TVN and crtics have a lot of expectations from this one. The writer for Jongyeon also has high hopes for this one. Another dark horse might be Good Boy because Shim Nayeon PD has delivered 2 consecutive hits and since she wasn't nominated for Good Bad Mother she might get nominated this time.

0

I can't call out winners 'till I watch those shows.

1

The ratings aren't that low. Lies Hidden in My Garden has like, 1 percent-ish ratings (?) yet they still manage to snatch Best Director and Best Actress nominees. TW hovers around 3-5 percent and that's still decent.

I think its just got unlucky (or not up to jury's taste)

By thumb rule youth dramas don't get nominated. Lies Hidden In My Garden earned high praise from critics. The mukbang scene with Lim Ji Yeon went viral and both her and Kim Tae Hee earned high praise. The drama was heavily discussed in Korean forums during its airing and people were disappointed it wasn't available on Netflix.

Art Direction should have gone to Matchmakers😞 Why did they not have a separate section for documentaries😬
The best male supporting actor is a great actor rarely in the main role unless it’s an unusual drama/film so it’s good that he got an award as recognition of his talent.
I am really surprised a drama about mental health and based on a webtoon was in the running for best drama amongst some popular dramas that’s such great news. The fact we also had Dr Slump covering other elements of mental and having popular actors in the key roles should hopefully lead to more realistic portrayals of strategies to manage mental health in K-dramaland.

Nothing against the actors, of course, but that show was a garbage fire of terrible, terrible messaging no matter how much acting ability went into it, and I would have hated to see that implicitly endorsed with a win.

On the positive side - yay for Moving's wins, for Namgoong Min, and for Yoona! I'm pretty cynical about awards shows but these deserved recognition.

And, yay indeed for “Moving”, NM and Yoona!
My one sadness remains for LFIS being completely ignored and shut out as well as JDY’s truly wonderful performance not acknowledged. So shortsighted.

I know right.... I wonder who got drunk and put that godsend drama for BEST SCREENPLAY .... (did they skip that abysmal last episode? That whole courtroom scene is practically one long bad joke....)

Ra Mi-Ran should've win Best Actress though.

Even by the standards of moronic court proceedings the world over, that scene was bonkers.

Wow, those of us who watched The Kidnapping Day SAID the child actress killed her role and deserved awards!

Good on her.
Same for Honey Lee and Knight Flower.
I'm not even a little surprised Namgoong Min nomination or win. Kudos to him too.

Congrats to Lee Yi Kyung on his nomination. He totally deserved it.

I'm kind of shocked that the 2ML from Marry My Husband was nominated but not the 2FL, who was amazing and got a lot of buzz.

I'm also shocked that LTNS was nominated for best screenplay. I thought it was kind of a mess.

Song Ha-yoon, Marry My Husband's 2FL, wasn't nominated because she was accused of school bullying. It remains to be seen whether she'll even act again.

My thoughts for both the nominees and winners

**Best Drama and Daesang**
I really thought Moving will pull a clean sweep here, and i'm in real worry that Good Bad Mother might pull an upset since .... that darned drama earned second highest nominations (!!!) after Moving. Thankfully, it turns out Moving won the Daesang instead, and even the Best Drama went to the much honourable My Dearest.

**Best Director**
It seems very weird to me that 4 of the 5 directors listed here does not have their dramas compete in the Best Drama category ... and it is even weirder for the Worst of Evil PD to win here... how? In terms of complexity, Moving, a sprawling epic with multiple POV storylines, big-budget action scenes, and a balancing act between fantasy, family, dark and warmth elements are .... much harder to direct compared to Worst of Evil - I know that the 90s Seoul underbelly vibe in Worst of Evil is no walk in the park to direct as well, but still!

**Best Screenplay**
In terms of pure screenwriting, Kim Eun Hee's Revenant is the most superior script out of five, and again I don't understand how Good Bad Mother earned its spot there ... Kim Eun Hee had won before though (for Signal), and I fully understand if they want to give the award to other newer writers - so they chose MOVING as the winner.

**Best Actor**
I believe this is a race between NGM vs RSR (vs possible ISW - but I haven't seen Boyhood, in fact, how to stream that drama?) and NGM had been nominated numerous times before yet he had to won one, so I clearly understand the jury's decision to make him as the winner here.

**Best Actress**
Here's the most baffling part of this list: Kim Ji-Won (QoT), Kim Tae-Ri (Revenant), and Han Hyo Joo (Moving - a DESERVING winner) should HAVE BEEN nominated. Yet they are skipped over and yes I think this is a really stacked category. I very much preferred Ra Mi-Ran's performance in Good Bad Mother (the only saving grace of that show, other than Ahn Eun-Jin & Lee Do-Hyun) and I don't understand how it went to Honey Lee instead ... Really, if only they nominated HHJ ... (but HHJ had won Baeksang long time ago for DongYi, so they probably just want to spread the awards)

**Best Supporting Categories**
No objection to both mother-son villain performances in Mask Girl winning the supporting categories, they are fantastic performances indeed. If only SHY had not been embroiled in the bullying scandal, she would've steamrolled through the supporting actress category. Also, the supporting actress category seems a bit - weak (not gonna lie I had to search Asianwiki to find who's playing what)

**Best New Actor**
Personally I preferred Kim Yo-Han (A Killer Paradox), but they got it okay with Lee Jung-Ha.

**Best New Actress**
Initially, I'm a bit skeptical that they would let Yu-Na win, given how popular Go Youn-Jung is. But I'm glad they made the right choice.

Yay for NGM, I rooted for him!

MY DEAREST as a whole for Best Drama tho? I mean, if we only take into account like first 6 episodes of Season1, then sure, but afterwards... hmmm.

I like Honey Lee and totally believe she delivered despite me not watching her drama, but poor AEJ, hope she got at least a few votes for her performance in MD.

REVENANT not getting Best Drama because it 100% was for me Best Directing is baffling - acting aside (there cannot be any reasonable explanation of KTR and OJS not being nominated other than them winning before recently), it was the best thing about the show, NOT the script (you can fit a fully grown sandworm into one of plotholes there!).

Seeing LYK nominated feels surreal, he's finally getting places)))

Overall, this was a year when a lot of deserving actors got overlooked due to "can't fit them all" problem, which is a damn shame.

I am always pleased when one of my favorite character actors is recognized for their work. Congratulations Yeom Hye-ran! I see she is part of a terrific cast surrounding Park Bo-gum and IU in Netflix’s upcoming period drama in 2025 WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU TANGERINES.
