News bites: April 27, 2024

  • A new poster has come creeping in for MBC’s upcoming Bittersweet Hell, where family psychologist Kim Hee-sun (Remarriage & Desires) and crime novelist Lee Hye-young (Big Bet) are putting on their sleuthing caps to protect their family from a mysterious blackmailer. Broadcasting on weekends following Chief Detective 1958, the black comedy and thriller premieres on May 24. [MBC]

  • JTBC’s rom-com Frankly Speaking released a new highlights reel ahead of next week’s premiere, with our announcer hero Go Kyung-pyo (D.P. 2) spilling nothing but the truth. Together with Kang Hanna (Red Heart) and Joo Jong-hyuk (Extraordinary Attorney Woo), the hijinks begin on May 1 in the Wednesday-Thursday slot. [Newsen]
  • Promos are now in full swing for tvN’s Player 2: Master of Swindlers, with new character stills showcasing our leads: Song Seung-heon (Black Knight), Oh Yeon-seo (Cafe Minamdang), Lee Shi-un (Bad Prosecutor), Tae Won-seok (Bloodhounds), and Jang Gyuri (Cheer Up). Slated to air in the Monday-Tuesday slot, the crime-action will be launching on June 3. [Sports Donga (1), (2)]

  • Channel A’s Check-in Hanyang confirmed their main lineup, with Bae In-hyuk (The Story of Park’s Marriage Contract), Kim Ji-eun (Branding in Seongsu), Jung Geon-joo (The Secret Romantic Guesthouse), and DKZ’s Jaechan (Semantic Error) headlining the fictional sageuk. Secrets abound of course with Bae hiding his prince identity and Kim living as a man, which all becomes fodder for the romance shenanigans when our foursome become fellow roommates. [Osen]
  • Kang Haneul (Curtain Call), Yeom Hye-ran (Mask Girl), and Seo Hyun-woo (A Shop for Killers) are becoming neighbors in Netflix’s new thriller movie, Wall to Wall. As residents of the same apartment complex, trouble starts to brew when a strange noise is heard every night, which seems to be coming from between floors. Production is being led by director Kim Tae-joon (Unlocked). [News1]
  • Speaking of thrillers, the mood is grim in the newest set of stills for SBS’s Connection, starring Ji Sung (Adamas), Jeon Mi-do (Thirty-Nine), Kwon Yul (Longing for You), and Kim Kyung-nam (The One and Only). Taking over the weekend slot following 7 Escape – Resurrection, the mystery unfolds on May 24 with PD Kim Moon-kyo (Trolley) directing and scripts by Lee Hyun (Diary of a Prosecutor). Excited for all the thrillers here and Check-in Hanyang. Modern romcoms? I am rather selective....2-3 romcoms is good enough for me these days.

Check-in Hanyang sounds fun! I adore Bae In-hyuk, but aww, Jung Geon-joo is stuck as a SML again 🥲

Have you seen the mini-series W.H.Y. with Jung Geon-Joo as ML? It's simple, cute, and has a great soundtrack 😉

Wall to Wall sounds more like a horror than a thriller.

Thriller and horror overlap quite a bit, so it makes sense. Either way, I'm in.

Bittersweet Hell sounds really interesting two smart women wife and mother in law uniting to protect their family, the person who is threatening the family is also a woman. Further investigation however, show this is the drama that won’t die, with several changes behind the scenes including the production house, director and actors. I am not sure if this is normal behind the scenes challenges that don’t usually come to light or a sign to run for the hills.

Frankly speaking has finally arrived to hopefully fill the barren wasteland aka the mid week slot. I hope it’s good enough to get the ratings so other dramas will be put in those slots going forward so we can reduce the over full weekends and Mon Tues schedules.

I like your train of thought for fixing the mid week drought. Let's hope it is so very good that it will inspire more dramas there. It's hard to keep up with a bunch of them squished together and remember what or who goes where sometimes +-+

I have my fingers crossed that Ji Sung has found another good role in Connection (and that it may not be another Adamas...)

Also looking forward to seeing Kim Kyung-nam in Connection - he was wonderful in The One and Only.
