News bites: April 24, 2024

Song Hye-gyo, Gong Yoo

  • Despite not revealing a title yet, my anticipation is alarmingly high for writer Noh Hee-kyung’s (Our Blues) newest project, which now has Gong Yoo (The Silent Sea) reviewing an offer to join Song Hye-gyo (The Glory). As a period series, the story will be diving into the history behind South Korea’s entertainment industry with PD Lee Yoon-jung (Summer Strike) attached to direct – the same Lee who worked with Gong Yoo in Coffee Prince. [Dispatch, News1]

  • A reunion may also be in the works for Park Eun-bin (Castaway Diva), who is in discussions to try on capes as a B-list superhero for The B Team. Based on a story idea by Marvel’s legendary Stan Lee, the fantasy series is in the early stages of production with Extraordinary Attorney Woo’s PD Yoo In-shik (Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim) at the helm. [Sports Chosun]
  • In the meantime, we can cozy down in sweaters and stills for tvN’s The Midnight Romance in Hagwon. When dusk falls and classes are out, we’ll be following instructors Jung Ryeo-won (May It Please the Court) and Wie Ha-joon (Gyeongseong Creature) as their love begins to blossom on May 11. Broadcasting on weekends following Queen of Tears, the romance has PD Ahn Pan-seok (One Spring Night) directing with scripts by Park Kyung-hwa. [News1]

  • Casting continues chugging ahead for The Price of Confession, with Park Hae-soo (Narco-Saints) now being courted, alongside Jeon Do-yeon (Crash Course in Romance) and Kim Go-eun (Little Women). Production for the crime-mystery has PD Lee Jung-hyo (Doona) leading the team, who directed Jeon previously on The Good Wife. Incidentally, Jeon is also acting opposite Park Hae-soo in The Cherry Orchard theatre play, which premieres in June. [Maeil Kyungje, Star News]
  • Lee Joo-bin (Queen of Tears) announced her next series will be the legal drama Guardians, joining EXO’s Xiumin (CEO-dol Mart) in the main lineup. In a story about probational officers and electronic monitoring, the series has also tapped Jung Sung-il (The Glory) for a leading role and is aiming to start filming later this year. [News1]
  • Speaking of law shows, ENA’s upcoming Crash released new stills and a video teaser where our crew begins their crackdown on traffic crimes. Starring officers Lee Min-ki (Behind Your Touch), Kwak Sun-young (Moving), and Heo Sung-tae (Bait), the series will be launching on May 13 in the Monday-Tuesday slot. [Newsen (1), (2)]

There are a few of the early stage dramas that sound like they would be worth pencilling in on the long list but I need more info before committing them to ink.
Looks like things could be busy in May Saturday -Tuesday with a few of the new ones dropping on the same days so I may have to save one show to watch during the tumbleweed rolling mid week period.

1. A Gong Yoo and SHK pairing wouldn't be bad at all.

2. The Hagwon romance one is one I hope to check out, assuming that very specific thing where I look forward to a show only to be unable to bring myself to watch it doesn't happen this time.

3. Love the cast lineup for The Price of Confession. So yes, will give it a watch, hopefully.

4. Jung Sung-il? Yes, please. I'll try and watch it for him, if nothing else.

5. Tentatively looking forward to Crash.

The idea of a 2nd-rate superhero sounds interesting (but can we still call them "super"?)
Toss is Park Eun-bin and I'm really optimistic -- not only because of her talent but mostly because I think she has the clout and judgement to get the projects with the best scripts and talented staff.

Noh Hee-kyung is an amazing writer, Song Hye-kyo and Gong Yoo are......adequate enough i guess... as actors, will definately be checking it out for the writing.

Park Eun-bin continues to stretch herself genre-wise, ill always give her projects a chance.

The price of confession has a stacked and talented cast, (no "visual" "actors" in sight) cant wait to see how it will turn out.

From what I see The Guardians has an ensemble cast (more leads) but Jung Sung Il will lead the drama. I read an article (in January) that said Xiumin has declined the offer for this drama.

Good for Jung Sungil! I've liked him since Different Dreams and really liked him in 9.9 Billion. Didn't see Glory (Song Hyekyo allergy) but I'm always rooting for him.

1. Will I watch? Of course, it is Gong Yoo, that being said I believe this will be the first drama in a while where SHK isn't the noonaing.

2. I will always try a PEB drama.

3. This stills for this have me so excited, but I still have a slight ick that she was his teacher, but we will see how it goes.

4. Jeon Do Yeon, one of the best to do it, Exciting!!!!

5. This could be interesting and LJB as a lead, huzzah for her.

6. This looks like such a fun ride😜

Lol, I love it for her, but I'm curious if the dynamic will be different with an older male co-star.

Lol. Noonaing 😂
I am not thrilled with this female lead pairing. Hope to be proven wrong.

Yeah, she is very pretty but not the strongest actress, but she has done fine in other dramas with the writer, so I'm hoping it will be fine.

She had way more chemistry with Jung Sung-Il than Lee Do-Hyun ni The Glory.

I agree with what you said. Still the drama would be better if her character did not end up with LDH's character either. Friendship between them was enough.

3

I like that she is paired with an actor older than her. Its been awhile since she is not the noona.

1) I want more news about The Trunk because I'm really excited with Gong Yoo and Seo Hyun-Hin pairing, not so much about this one.

2) PEB is a good reason enough to watch it.

3) Just release it now!

While I'm happy to have Gong Yoo back in anything he choose, I would also prefer to see Trunk.

I discovered you can also click the remind me button for Mr. Plankton, Woo Do-Hwan's next drama, which I think is releasing around the same time. I tried a bunch of the others that Netflix has announced for this year, but those were the only two so far that can be saved.

There's also the high school drama Hierarchy, starring Roh Jeong-eui and Lee Chae-min.

I thought Kim Jiwon would take The Price of Confession, since she mentions wanting to do thriller. But Kim Goeun-Jeon Doyeon pairing goes a long way!

Yay for more Kwak Sunyoung as lead!!

I misread The Price of Confession as The Prince of Confessions and was confused/disappointed when it was labeled as a crime thriller and not a rom-com 🤣

It sounds like a super fun rom com about a guy who confesses a lot, all the time. With flash mobs and flowers and falling petals.
Since he does that, we must assume that he has very short relationships. And maybe he thinks that's what he wants.
But then one day he is completely outdone by the FL, who leaves him after ... [insert very short time].
And he actually really wants her. He didn't really know before now.

Oooh, yessss! I would definitely watch that!

Yours got me thinking and this title could really go a few ways…

- A man who has repeatedly confessed to and been turned down by the same woman since their childhood. He finally decides to give up but soon after she realizes her true feelings and needs to become the princess of confessions to get him back!

- A man who had confessed to different women throughout his life has always been turned down. Just as he is about to give up he meets a woman who has never been confessed to!

- A wacky fusion sageuk

- A man owns a company that helps people plan successful confession scenarios, but he himself is a cynic. He thinks the need for grandiose gestures to convey feelings is superficial and believes the planning and research that goes into the confessions is manipulative. That is, however, until he starts falling for the recipient of his current client’s confession!

1. I hope if this pairing happens, that Song Hye Gyo is willing to not take herself so seriously. Gong Yoo's best chemistry with his co-stars is when there is some fun and liveliness to his character and relationships (Coffee Prince, Goblin--the bromance between Goblin and the Reaper). SHG's recent works have had her so serious with no lightness or whimsy to her character--it's as if she and the directors are afraid to make her anything less than picture perfect beautiful--no funny faces or much expression at all. SHG's last charming role may have been in Full House where she showed some willingness to let go a little. The Coffee Prince director likes whimsy, so maybe she can bring that out in her, character willing. Gong Yoo is a good serious actor, like in Train to Busan, but his serious works with FLs, seem a little muted when his biggest charms, his goofiness and his laugh, aren't allowed to shine.

exactly. the show had me at Gong Yoo, then lost me at Song Hye Kyo because she has that "yes, i'm all this" attitude in her roles. she just poses in scenes...

in Full House, i thought her "comedy" was as bad as Rain's acting (don't get me wrong, i'm a fan, but he was young and not very good at emoting either in that drama).

if this director can pull out Hye Kyo's comedic chops, it'd be a welcome relief!

but then again, how can ANY woman not respond to Gong Yoo's fabulously oozing charm and chemistry??? she'd be made of wood, in that case... we shall see......

Idk, I think you're setting her up in that last paragraph 😂

She is not a comedic actor. But then, maybe this role doesn't call for that? Or maybe she'll play straightwoman to Gong Yoo's maverick?

i don't know why i thought it was going to be a rom com...
: D

let's just say i think Song Hye Kyo is FLAT, emotionless. if that's her character role, then she does great. if she has to emote (in a positive way), she's lacking.

I admit I'm not a fan 😬

As much as I love Gong Yoo and want to see him on screen, I hope he doesn't accept this role with SHG as I find her acting generic and bland. The contrast between the two will be very evident and I don't see how it could work.
