Jung Ryeo-won and Wie Ha-joon’s Midnight Romance in Hagwon
by tccolb
Infuriatingly taking their sweet time with promos, tvN offers us another tantalizing crumb with The Midnight Romance in Hagwon’s first teaser, where love finds Jung Ryeo-won (May It Please the Court) and Wie Ha-joon (Gyeongseong Creature) as the clock strikes twelve.
Taking us to Seoul’s Daechi area, the feeding ground for after-school tutoring academies (a.k.a. hagwons), the romance has Jung Ryeo-won playing star instructor Seo Hye-jin. Resilient and steadfast, our heroine has a solid 14 years of experience in her job and hit the legendary tier ten years back with what’s known as the “Daechi-dong Miracle” in her field.
At the time, Hye-jin had been struggling over her career path, reflecting on past dreams and worrying about her future after teaching. But despite this, she had put her all into helping a troublemaker student at the hagwon and somehow managed to get him accepted into a prestigious college.
Fast forward to the present when said student Lee Jun-ho – played by Wie Ha-joon – suddenly comes back to the academy, now as an adult and the new rookie instructor. Although Jun-ho had secured a cushy job at a large corporation after college, he decides to change course and returns to the hagwon that had served as a dramatic turning point in his youth.
I expect there will be much protesting by various parties before love prevails. But as the short teaser declares in the captions, “A heart-fluttering midnight romance will begin when night falls in Daechi-dong,” and I put my trust in PD Ahn Pan-seok (One Spring Night, Pretty Noona Who Buys Me Food) to deliver all the swoony feels.
Together with scripts by Park Kyung-hwa, tvN’s The Midnight Romance in Hagwon will be following Queen of Tears in the weekend slot, premiering on May 11.

I'm excited for this. Both actors are among my favourites. The director has done some good stuff too.

They could have just named Gu Won as Lee Junho and nobody in King the Land would have noticed.

Instead, they went on to name a completely different character in a completely different show as Gu Won only two months later. 😆 I didn't watch My Demon but I know that character's name too.

I was really looking forward to this, then I found out he's her former student and it's tempered my enthusiasm. They're both adults so it's fine. But the former student angle just gives me the ick.

So much will depend on how their student-teacher relationship is depicted—and how it echoes into their present day dynamics. So, it’s watch and see for me.

It’s actually much better than I was expecting based on previous things I’d read. This makes it much clearer that 10 years have passed, so the relationship doesn’t really bother me at all as long as it wasn’t romantic back in the day. Lots of people reconnect at different points in their lives and end up developing different kinds of relationships from the ones they had before, so I hope that’s what happened here!

I saw it as nothing happened when they were in the teacher student relationships he just stands out because of the work they did to get him the outcome he wanted. 10 years later he turns up and they have a completely different relationship as he is now a colleague.

“Crumb” indeed! That’s just a still + background music. 😅 But what can I say. Nothing can put me off watching this!
Ps: did you guys notice the English song lyrics? Sounds like the production will again opt for a haunting OST. Wouldn’t be surprised, if all of it was in English again… At least it’s not a cover. 😵💫

I love this PD, and although there are so many ways this premise could go wrong, there are also many, many ways it could go wonderfully right. My expectations are high here. And I'm just not feeling any issue with the set-up. The fact that he was a student she helped at an academy, and that they later fall in love when he's an adult in the same job, doesn't strike me as problematic. Clearly there has to be some conflict here, so maybe there is societal pushback based on the age difference or their history, but on its face, it doesn't bother me in this context.

I agree that the fact that it is years after the teaching, and plus was a Hagwon and not a normal high school makes a huge difference in the romantic circumstances. Beyond the obvious exploitation of a young person, which makes it a crime when it occurs in high school, what makes a teacher student relationship a huge no-no even in graduate school, where the student might be closer in age to the professor, is the huge imbalance in power. The professor's influence is a key factor in whatever feelings there might be. In a Hagwon, that power imbalance does not exist, especially years after the fact--if anything the tutor's fate is determined by student success.

I agree. My initial reaction with the student thing on very early news was apprehension, but with details later about her being a teacher at an academy, not an actual school, and 10 years having passed since then, makes it not icky at all to me. Also, I love Jung Ryeo Won in everything and I'm excited to see Wi Ha Jun have a lead role with a normal happy ending.
I loved One Spring Night, though I hope the use of the soundtrack is a little less in your face than it was there.

That makes one of us.
The initial announcements had me wary for a whole bunch of reasons: I don't trust this director at all, the lead pairing seems really non-intuitive (much as I like both actors), and the former-student aspect is squicky. I'll probably cautiously check it out if only for WHJ. That little jingle is pretty nice, though. Let's hope there are more than three songs in the OST.
I often find English-language OSTs a downside for a show because I can't just tune out the words and absorb the emotions during a scene the way I can with Korean. And if they're by a Korean artist, they often have just that little something off - the rhythm, syllable stress, grammar, imagery that doesn't quite translate - that is madly distracting. Jealousy Incarnate's almost-all-English OST was cute at first but drove me wild after a while. /rant

I can't go with you on this rant. The two songs my wife and I always sing at certain key moments in our interactions with each other are "Its driving me crazy, pulling me under" from Law School or more recently "I can see my halo" from Perfect Marriage revenge. They have defused many an argument, let me tell you.
Also, there are so many OST's with phrases in English. I don't mind those at all, in fact it makes them fun to sing along with, because you wait, wait, and the english phrase appears and you sing it.
But I'll tell you what I hate: U.S. pop songs behind kdramas. There are several of these, but the absolute worst was Stand By Your Man, repeated over and over in Something in the Rain. Of course I hate that song anyway, but after just a few episodes of that show, I said, "that's it I can't take it anymore," shut off the sound, and just treated it as if when the actors talked, typed english subtitles came out of their mouth.

Well, thanks (?) for replacing my previous earworm with this mental image. Of course your singing is probably like that of the nightingale, whereas mine would provoke anyone to cover their ears and pray loudly and is best saved for emergency situations where I need to escalate fast.
The OST for SITR and especially that #^*(%! song were exactly what I had in mind, and I also resorted to muting many scenes before finally giving up altogether. But I often like OSTs with some phrases in English, because that gives me a clue to their meaning without being too distracting, like the kpop convention of having verses in Korean and choruses in English. Don't tell anyone, but I do sing along with those in the car with the windows rolled up. Jin and I have a good thing going.

PD Ahn is my faves! I think he is one of the most open-minded people in this industry. I'm not surprised that he is helming a drama with a bit of a controversial subject. If anyone can do it right, it would be this PD.
I don't know the writer or if Tvn is giving him control of the casting and music, but I'd expect some of his usual veteran actors to fill some of the supporting roles. English music is a thing with PD Ahn.
I hope he didn't retire from running Dramahouse because he does an excellent job behind the scenes in many JTBC dramas.

He really addressed important themes about Korean society and his characters are not typical, they're far from perfect, but he makes them human and touching.
