Jung Ryeo-won’s heart stirs in The Midnight Romance in Hagwon

The latest trailer for tvN’s The Midnight Romance in Hagwon showcases the lives of two instructors, but more than the small glimpses of plot, it’s really the atmosphere of the project that draws me in. It’s no wonder, though, since director Ahn Pan-seok is in charge, proving that he can make anything — even Korea’s cutthroat education system — feel soft, warm, and all-around fuzzy. That isn’t to say there won’t be drama or angst in the series, and from the trailer, the show looks riddled with conflict, both external and internal.

Taking on the lead role of skilled instructor Seo Hye-jin is Jung Ryeo-won (May It Please the Court). An educator who respects her students, Hye-jin knows when to speak softly but also use her voice to stand her ground. It’s a tough space to exist in, let alone stand out, but Hye-jin’s career lifted off when she helped one of her students get into a prestigious university.

That said student is Lee Jun-ho, played by Wie Ha-joon (Gyeongseong Creature), and after ten years, he suddenly steps back into Hye-jin’s life. After quitting his corporate job, Jun-ho joins the hagwon where she works, but while everyone else seems ecstatic to have him on the team, Hye-jin is less sure. She tells Jun-ho that she’s a double-edged sword from their hagwon’s perspective, and from the way she confronts her boss, she clearly isn’t afraid to ask questions and challenge others.

Hye-jin appears conflicted — of what exactly is still left to interpretation — but Jun-ho is definitely on her mind. He coaxes her to do whatever she wants, but Hye-jin says that she feels hurt. Now that they work in the same place, crossing paths is unavoidable as the trailer ends with our two instructors hiding in the dark. The close proximity causes Hye-jin to catch her breath as Jun-ho leans in towards her and asks what he should do if she acts like this.

Directed by PD Ahn Pan-seok (One Spring Night, Pretty Noona Who Buys Me Food) and written by Park Kyung-hwa, tvN’s The Midnight Romance in Hagwon premieres May 11 in the weekend slot.

The falling in love with your former student is just weird, lol, I'm sure I will get over it. It just squeeks me out a little. Give me a couple of episodes.

Fan wall support group, engage! (As if I can make it through this alone… 😂)

But it’s still early days, maybe someone might pick it up until it airs?

Fanwall is always "on duty". But recaps are a fun place to swoon. If not then let's all just Hangout!! 😂

We'll know if it'll recap by the end of the week. May 11th is still 11 days away.

QoT and Hide are over but they added Frankly Speaking and Atypical Family in the recap shows.

There is time. And this might be the kinda drama missvictrix might pick up and those are usually very last minute, sometimes after two episodes air.
I am sure recappers will be struggling in May given the number of dramas that are airing. So few dramas will tend to be neglected unintentionally.
Atleast we are sure to get a hangout. Also, I don’t expect too many people to watch this drama. We might be a small group.

They didn't have so much chance with the picked ones. Hide, Wonderful World, Chief Detective 1958 don't seem to be followed by a lot of Beanies.

@kurama WW would have had more watchers if it were available on Netflix or Viki. I was surprised by the low turnout.
Yeah, I think it’s the recapper preference to genre too, not just beanie interest.
Chief Detective had a lot of hype, didn’t realise not many beanies are not watching.

I guess, it is Wait and see!!

Chief Detective 1958 isn't coming to US Hulu until May 22 in a single drop...so FWIW, a chunk of the Beanatariat is unable to join in yet.

This drama did seem quite popular and definitely invites recaps and discussion. But I didn't even consider how many interesting kdramas are dropping this month, makes sense some will not make the cut :'(

I am very excited for this, partly due to the ML's and partly due to the production crew on board.
