The Midnight Studio: Episode 5
by mistyisles
We only get one episode this week, but The Midnight Studio uses that episode to dig deeper into our characters and their understanding of each other, add a new player to the mix, and drop more hints about a mystery in our ghost-seeing photographer’s past. As it turns out, the ability to see and interact with ghosts is both more and less fun than it sounds — and it certainly doesn’t give you all the answers.
EPISODE 5
Until Bom, Ki-joo has never seen or heard of someone still seeing ghosts after leaving the Midnight Studio. After checking Bom over and finding nothing (else) unusual, he sends her off with a kit of ghost-repelling supplies and his phone number in case of emergency. But he and Bom have very different interpretations of what constitutes an emergency, and soon she’s calling him at all hours of the day with questions ranging from “Is it okay to feed a hungry baby ghost?” to “Can I give this ghost the Midnight Studio address?”
At first, Bom’s ghost encounters are cute and sweet, if a little sad. But then she visits a potential client in the hospital, only to discover the woman she’s talking to has already passed. The scene quickly turns gruesome, as other ghosts in the emergency room have died violent deaths, and they crowd threateningly around her demanding help she has no way to give. Bom runs home in tears and lines the doorway with salt and red beans, just in case her mysterious “Safe Zone” forcefield doesn’t work.
Someone does come through her door that night, but it’s not a ghost — it’s her friend, KIM JI-WON (Lee Bom-sori), who cut her globe-trotting adventures short to be with Bom after Geum-soon’s passing. Unbeknownst to Bom (or anyone else, for that matter), Ji-won was previously diagnosed with a rare form of cancer and given one year to live. That’s why she quit her job and left to see the world.
But, in a wonderful stroke of luck, Ji-won’s most recent tests baffle her doctor — the cancer is shrinking! He calls it a miracle, but in the moment Ji-won can only wail in frustration at having cut professional ties and drained her bank account. Now that she’s no longer dying, she’ll have to start all over again. Fortunately, Bom is more than happy to have Ji-won move in with her, and Ji-won lands a marketing job easily enough. It happens to be at Sung-ho’s old workplace — the very office in which he died of a heart attack from overwork, and which he still haunts, scaring away new recruits who dare to sit at “his” desk.
Between being chased by menacing ghosts and Ji-won laughing at the notion of seeing ghosts, Bom starts to understand what Ki-joo has dealt with every day of his life. So when he trudges home covered in salt after a demeaning encounter with a bereaved family, she offers comfort in the form of head pats and a sweet “you’ve worked hard today.” She wonders aloud if she was made to share his ability so he’d have someone to understand his burden. But the frightening ghost encounters keep coming, and after Ki-joo has to rescue her from a particularly nasty spirit, Bom admits tearfully that she can’t handle living like this.
Fortunately, Ki-joo and his assistants have found a possible solution: one of his ancestors wrote about a person who retained the gift just like Bom did. After that person took another photo with a second ghost, their sight went back to normal. So Ki-joo tracks down a lingering ghost and convinces him to take a photo with Bom. Once it’s done, she tells Ki-joo she wants to act as his Safe Zone after all, but this time he’s the one to say it’s too dangerous. He doesn’t want to endanger her anymore, so he plans to move out of both the rooftop room and her life.
The next morning, Bom ventures cautiously outside. With no ghosts in sight, she skips off to enjoy her day. And we jump to meet a person who can only be the next Midnight Studio guest: a young deliveryman (cameo by Seo Ji-hoon!), who’s clearly beloved by his colleagues and about to celebrate his long-awaited graduation. Sure enough, a dark spirit creeps into his truck. It causes him to fall asleep at the wheel and steers his truck toward a crowd of people at an intersection, one of whom is Bom. Just in time, the man wakes up and swerves — straight into one of the more horrific K-drama car wrecks I’ve seen in a while.
Bom and the other bystanders rush over to try and help the survivors, but there aren’t any. There are, however, multiple ghosts emerging from the wreckage. And she can still see them. As Bom starts to panic, Ki-joo arrives on the scene and covers her eyes.
Alongside this main storyline, we also got a peek into the pasts of the Midnight Studio staff. We already knew the broad strokes of Sung-ho’s story: he met his first love online, and in fact was planning to finally meet her in person the night he died. He’s not entirely convinced the woman wasn’t Bom, but considering Bom has no idea what he’s talking about, my money is on someone else. As for Nam-gu, he was a detective who (it’s implied) died while chasing down a criminal. This episode, he joins a stakeout with his old partner and visits his now-widowed wife, wishing she could see and hear him like Bom can.
Finally, there are several more references to a young girl ghost who came through the Midnight Studio when Ki-joo was young. Instead of passing on through the Gate of the Dead after three days like visitors are supposed to, she stuck around for weeks and eventually disappeared. It’s hinted that Ki-joo may face dire consequences for messing with the door’s usual operations, though not what specifically he did. And there are also a number of uncanny parallels drawn between the girl and Bom, so we’ll see if the “missing” ghost is still running around somewhere, or if she found her way (perhaps with help) back into the land of the living.
Speaking of Bom, I’m glad for the sake of the story that they couldn’t get rid of her ghost-seeing that easily, though I appreciated that Ki-joo tried his best to find a way to do it. I love how this shared experience is impacting the relationship between him and Bom, such that he’s willing to help her stop seeing ghosts even though he craves another living human to share his world with, and she’s willing to help protect him from the ghosts even though she’s terrified.
They haven’t figured it out yet, but it seems to me the Safe Zone isn’t so much linked to Bom alone as it is generated by the two of them in proximity. So I’m looking forward to watching them realize they’re stronger together and officially team up — and hopefully find a way to break that curse before Ki-joo’s time runs out.

Man, I was really excited for ep. 6 too but alas. I don't really have that much to comment on for ep. 5, which seemed like setup up mostly. But I assume next week at least Bom will join up with him and start being a lawyer for the ghosties?
... Spurred on by the tragic case of Seo Ji-hoon, ofc. Can they give him a role where his character gets a happy ending? T-T

I knew that my second favorite kdrama actor Seo Ji Hoon would have a guest role as a ghost (and he is second favorite only to my boi Yoo In Soo) but couldn't believe that his life was cut short so quickly with very, very little back-story as a real live person.
Thus far, I easily FF through the final 5 minutes of each episode involving the final "good-bye" of the ghost but I don't know how I will handle Ep. 6 with Seo Ji Hoon of the puppy-dog eyes and ever wistful smile. 😥😥😥

I was pretty sure the safe zone thing was proximity before, but this episode did a good job of confirming it, and now I’m just so excited to see them figure it out! Maybe even at the beginning of ep 6 when they are standing together and the ghosts from the crash are advancing? They are so fantastic together I just can’t handle it!
I also liked the setup for what I’m hoping will be another kind of team up: Bom becoming a lawyer who helps people posthumously! Ki-joo promised that lingering ghost that he would get justice for his old employees, there’s no way he can keep that promise alone, and who else would believe him except Bom?
The fact that Bom’s best friend is named Ji-won, that she has a terminal illness that miraculously disappeared, and that this is airing at the same time as Queen of Tears can’t be a coincidence right? The meta has reached a new level of meta, y’all.

I am hoping Bom becomes a ghost lawyer! Next case: the drunk driver who ran over the little boy. Then her photo partner ghosts' employees. Imagine the good she could do with testimony from ghosts about their own deaths? Even without being able to put them on the stand. Hwaiting!

I know! Last show, he didn’t get the girl. This one, he doesn’t even get to live.
But I did look up what else he’s up to. Out of the upcoming high school drama, horror anthology, and supernatural drama, the last looks the most interesting to me. May we finally get an HEA for the boy with the beautiful sad eyes. 🤞🏽

By "supernatural drama", do you mean "Four Pillars" or "Four Lords: Destiny Changer"?
That drama is currently on something called "Watcha" - I believe a web-based, Korean OTT. I can't locate the drama anywhere, even an illegal site (which I shun 98% of the time but sometimes the greater good. . . . ).
His "horror anthology" (Tarot) is actually invited to Cannes this year - but I've read the synopsis of his part and. . .shudder, I can't.

When a SML out-acts the (allegedly popular) ML ... that's a sad day in dramaland which unfortunately happens a bit too often. I don't want Seo Ji-hoon to become the next Kang Ki-young. May both of them be blessed with good ML roles where they can truly shine.

Yes!!!! He's protecting her with that circle, not vice versa. How wonderful!! I also imagine that they're trying to lure us in with a childhood connection between the two of them, and that's fine...I remain intrigued about the scar on her wrist which seems to be very similar in shape to the metal logo on the side of "the" camera.
I keep trying not to fall for this show, but I spent that whole scene of our OTP on the rooftop crying. What with Bom saying all the right things and Ki-joo trying not to take them in, but failing. Both actors are doing amazing jobs falling in love and having us fall in love with them as well.
I loved also seeing the petulant mean side of our puppy-dog ghost, Sung-ho. When Ki-joo accused him of pestering the "youth," I laughed and thought, "Yeah, that's what you're doing, bruh **psst you go!!**"
And, what a wonderful, if horrible, vignette to see the story behind the driver of a Truck of Doom™!!! And that the driver was Seo Ji-hoon! I knew that evil ghosts were sometimes behind the predominance of ToD rampages in South Korea!!!

I knew that evil ghosts were sometimes behind the predominance of ToD rampages in South Korea!!! This is the only rational explanation I can think of. 😂
That rooftop scene was lovely. Joo-won nailed it with his vulnerability. I wanted to pat his head too. (Which is weird btw cos I never considered this gesture for anyone over 12 before entering dramaland; I know I’m going to utterly startle some adult in my country by doing so one day. And oh hey, that might be an interesting drama chat, dramas mannerisms we’ve taken on in real life. I did say “Fighting!”to one my struggling friends the other day. She thought me a bit mad. 😂)

I did this to a grove of trees once 🫣
They were American chestnut trees, which succumb to a blight when they reach a certain age, and this grove was an experimental one where researchers are trying to find a way around the disease. I admired them, and as I was leaving, totally without thinking, raised my fist and said “Hwaiting!” 😅😂

I wish the Seo Ji-hoon truck of doom was not caused by an evil spirit, but rather genuine fatigue from working so hard and diligently to get his degree. It would make the story more poignant, and also appeal as a symbol to those Seo Ji-hoon fans who shed tears that he has not yet been playing leads regularly. Also, I prefer my Truck of Dooms to be entirely natural--no supernatural enhancements, which to me are like Botox injections--they remove the beautiful crinkles that add personality to each truck of doom accident.

I really love the dynamic between the leads. This is my favorite kind of romance, one that feels organic as they get closer and help each other as they work towards a mutual goal.
The backstory with the cop ghost (the actor from Good Job) was really sad. I'm guessing this will be like most ghost dramas where each ghost helpers will find peace and "cross over" near the conclusion of the story.
I also think that Bom might be the girl, but it sounds like she had a different name. I doubt Bom was renamed at any point, given the significance of her name to her grandma. Color me confused.

I am NOT making the mistake of taking this show too seriously, but I really like the metaphor of "seeing ghosts" the way Bom is doing it--ghosts of her Grandma, and ghosts of tragic disasters, and the understanding that seeing ghosts is a burden--you have to be able to escape the ghosts of the past to live in the present. I also like the idea of a romance between two people who see ghosts as a way out of their haunted circumstances.
I don't really like the upcoming deadline of death at 35--I have a bad feeling that this is going to lead to one of those meaningful, "bittersweet" endings, with the couple reuniting as in a photo shoot. But maybe that's because I myself am haunted by the ghosts of past kdrama endings.

Dr. Slump is a "healing drama", correct? Maybe it had a comedy tag as well so I felt pretty confident about watching it.
However, any "healing" drama that also involves ghosts or supernatural is pretty much a signal that I should stay away after "May I Help You."

Dr. Slump's happy ending, which I liked, did not heal me from the trauma of hearing a drunk Park Hyung Sik character saying "I wike you" 20 times in a row in one of the early episodes.
However, speaking of ghost-service shows, "Delivery Man's" romantic ending did heal me from the weak acting that characterized that show. In fact, for that show, I recommend just watching the last 15 minutes for healing purposes.

It was nice that Bom tried to be open minded and comforting once she realized how hard he must have it but it's also totally understandable why she would be so freaked out.

Althought I'm enjoying the leads and their intersecting story, I've been looking forward to Han Groo's comeback for months. I'm wondering if she will ever actually speak - or simply portray her character with facial expressions.
