Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching (March 9, 2024)

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

javabeans

Shooting Stars (aka Sh**ting Stars): One upside to having unplugged from the entertainment machine for a while is the ability to go into shows without any baggage or anticipation and just figure out how I feel about them, and I’m quite enjoying the experience. I completely missed this show when it aired, but didn’t get the sense it had made much of a splash at the time and thus didn’t expect much. I generally like Lee Sung-kyung and Kim Young-dae, but they’ve both done bad dramas so the casting alone wasn’t much to stand on. So my foremost impression of this drama was pleasant surprise — I found it lighthearted, amusing, a bit tongue-in-cheek, inoffensively cute. Dramaland really loves making dramas about dramaland, to the extent that it often feels like a lazy cliche — everybody’s a top star, every scandal is an emergency of the highest order, and every press conference is a pivotal turning point. At least with this drama, rather than playing up a lavish display of celebrity excess, I appreciated the perspective on the staffers and crew toiling behind the scenes to clean up their star clientele’s shit (aka, that endless stream of gossip, controversy, and scandal that comes with the territory), armed with a can-do spirit and deadpan humor. (On that score, while I still think that title is more awkward than clever — always to be read in my head as shitting stars — at least I can appreciate the reference to shit was intentional in both languages.) To be honest, Kim Young-dae has been pretty subpar in previous projects (so wooden in Extraordinary You, so ineffectually unemotive in Penthouse) but he won me over here because he’s found an angle that works with his limitations: clueless heo-dang himbo smacked upside the head by petty jealousy and lovestruck adoration. It was frigging adorable. Lee Sung-kyung was all no-nonsense competence as the lead PR manager and fixer, while he was the topmost top star with a swoony reputation who just couldn’t figure out how to make the smart pretty girl like him. There were other plot elements and stars with shit to clean up, like Choi Ji-woo guest-starring as a legendary star and negligent mother, plus a host of scandals cooked up by bloodthirsty tabloids and anti-fans — but really, all that was just filler in between the couple moments for me. Side note: sometimes we get chaste pecks and sometimes we get moderate making out, but we don’t often get couples chain-smooching amidst outbursts of giddiness at how adorable they find each other and we really need more of that in our lives. So while the romance veered a bit young in tone (one could even say juvenile) and I’d never turn down a bit more nuance and thoughtful characterization, in this fantasy, top star romances can be simple and pure and I’ll accept that.

Dramaddictally

Wedding Impossible: I loved the mom’s well-articulated philosophy on taking the side paths. I totally stand by that perspective. As for our female lead, I like her a lot better when she’s mouthing off and putting people in their place. Something about the softer moments between our leads just didn’t work for me this week. Although, that being said, I do think Ji-han is earning his place as a drama-worthy male lead. Maybe the seduction tactics don’t work for Ah-jung, but I like his dedication to the craft. In fact, he’s so dedicated to the art of making ‘em swoon that I couldn’t believe even for a second that he didn’t know he was already smitten. Who watches all of someone’s side-character filmography for “research”? Give it up, Ji-han. I think you drank your own love potion.

The Impossible Heir: I’m just here for the love triangle and all the handsomeness on display. Yes, years-long plotting and endless power-tripping is exciting stuff, but really, here’s to Week 2 suits and improved haircuts.

Currently Watching
Wedding Impossible: 🤵‍♂️🚫👰‍♀️(ep. 2-4) Oohh things developed more depth in the last couple of episodes! It was nice seeing the ML and FL stand up for each other to jerks. I'm liking the ML more now. Chaebol half-sister seems quite interesting - will she become the primary antagonist?

Flex x Cop: 🕵‍♂️ (ep. 10-11) So the cases are getting a bit darker (*and bloodier*), but I'm still enjoying it. Ahn Bo-hyun is just doing such a nice job making the ML personable and likable. Their team is just so chill and supportive! It's nice to see positive work teams. Also, I LOVE seeing Isoo make breakthroughs and solve things with his non-linear processes!

FINISHED!!🥳🎉
The Matchmakers
The most beautiful drama. "Love is everywhere, and is the beginning of everything." I loved the tone of this... sweet, wistful, and a little bittersweet, but with hope and happiness instead of sadness. The love between our main leads is developed through their admiration and esteem for each other as they get to know each other. The ML is a sweet nerd (just my type), and has to learn about romantic love because he hasn't had any practice. But he's sincere, genuine, and patient in his pursuit. The FL is a young widow who loves love, and tries to help other couples find love like she experienced in her marriage. The manifestation of her love is shown as a desire to protect - to protect her clients, her family, and her new-found love, even offering to be his shield. She and her MIL are cut from the same cloth, which her MIL sees, but whereas MIL will sacrifice anyone to advance the monolithic concept of "family," the FL is willing to sacrifice her own happiness for people she considers family. Such an interesting contrast. I also loved the Romeo and Juliet thematic bookending of the first and last episodes. The villain was complex and compelling, the characters well fleshed out and nuanced, the love sincere and gentle, and every scene was GORGEOUSLY framed, lit, and filmed (I mean, even using different colors of light to visibly show passage of time - just WOW). My new #1 drama.

OMG. You're done. And it's now your #1!!!! I had so, so hoped you'd love it this much. Squee for my Internet Friend!!

Now, to the meat of the matter. When might we see, "Hopeful's Summaries of EVERY SINGLE MATCHMAKERS EPISODE," each presented in apt, poignant, brief phrases that are separated by semi-colons? I'm truly not joking that I'd avidly read and respond to 16 such Fan Wall posts. 🥹🤓❤️

You were so so right about how lovely and awesome this drama is, and how much I'd love it!!! 🥰 Thank you again for all your fanwall posts - it was so fun to engage with the themes and visuals, even when I hadn't gotten very far yet.

The thing is, the things I liked about the drama were so BIG, my emotions eclipsed my watch-pause-take notes-watch-pause-etc. process... I didn't do the summaries for the last episodes! To do so, I'd need to go back and rewatch. And I totally will at some point!!!!

I love how you brought me back to The Matchmakers memory lane! I feel like it's easy to overlook how a scene is lit and framed in favor of focusing on script and acting and even costuming, but a drama like Matchmakers come along and I go, "omg, the scene is so beautifully framed! How did they think to get that angle or compose that scene?!"

COMPLETED
Sejak - What a relief that everyone in Qing was as blind as everyone in Joseon 😑. JJS was too good for this show.

Queen of Divorce - Meh. Still waiting for Kang Ki-young as a lead in a good show.

ONGOING
The Chaebol-Cop Show - It'd be interesting if they actually let the mother's death remain a suicide. I thought this was 12 episodes with the cult being the final arc so I'm glad we get more episodes!

Doctor Slump - The Trucks-of-Doom are evolving 🙄.

Wedding Impossible - The show is jumping through so many hoops to make everyone's super irrational motivations believable. But the characters keep surprising me - even evil chaebol trio - and I enjoy it.

The Impossible Heir (Ep 1-4) - The story is moving so fast - it's hard to relate to any of this scheming. Still Week 2 was better than Week 1. The FL is extraneous to this story. Nice to see Lee Ji-hoon again.

It's finally Queen of Tears weekend! Let's go 💃🎉🎊!

C-DRAMAS

Ongoing

Flex Cop upto 4 episodes. I am having fun with this show. First two episodes were ok, but I really liked episode 3 and 4. I love how earnest our chaebol cop has become. It was nice to see him find something he enjoys and is actually passionate about it. He even informed his boss he is running late!! All he wants is to be part of the team. It was sad when no one went to his dinner invite nor did they invite him. I can’t wait for our cop team to warm up to him and make him feel included. He is such a softie and endearing chaebol!
Also, the forensic lady and other cop dude have some insane chemistry!! In just two scenes so much was said. Need morawwwe!
Only complaint is that the two cases so far have been in the rich realm making it easy for Chaebol cop to contribute. Hope we see him learn in other cases and be thrown into unfamiliar territory.

Shop for Killers : 5/8. No progress this week.

Impossible Heir :
What are they even doing!! So flat. But everyone is so pretty and are acting like the smartest cookies in Korea, so I just want to see where they go from here.

Wedding Impossible :
So so fun! Absolutely enjoying the faux seduction backfiring on Ji Han. I hope the show can keep this up.

Shogun : Yet to watch Ep 3.
I really liked Ep 2. Hiroyuki Sanada as Toranaga is brilliant. The assassin sequence was so well shot!! can’t wait to watch episode 3 this evening.

Wedding Impossible
Still the most fun drama in the week. Having to qualify this as a week day drama knowing later today I will finally start watching Queen of tears which I am hoping will be my fun weekend watch.

Queen of tears
Drops later today🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳

Dr slump
Hoping dark tones aka Hyung disappear as that is the only reason this drama has not been able to reign as the ultimate watch. It is a great slice of life rom com but I feel the slice of life elements were dark enough and would have kept it more realistic.

The impossible heir
Singing All by myself 🎶 again as I am the last woman standing still enjoying this drama for what it is is.

Between Him & Her
Progress in the main relationship at loooooooooooooooooong last.

Eye love you -Japanese
I have the last two episodes on hold as the show will finally drop tomorrow on Netflix with hopefully better subtitles. I want to watch on Netflix so the ratings are captured to support smiling boy and his projects.

Binge watch corner
The best chicken as recommended by a beanie on their What We’re Watching list a couple of weeks back. Thank you for recommending this no stress watch.

Flex x Cop: The meta reference and his Iet’s not talk about it wave of his hand to his next life was pitch perfect. I am glad he can make fun of himself. Corrupt police, smh, but this continues to be my fun drama. Also Yisoo’s earnestness is so sweet, we are a team indeed.

Wonderful World: SIGH, we had to go the cheating husband route. I biggest problem with this plot point is that at the end of the day, the ultimate cause of Gunwoo’s death was not the cheating or the door open, it was the man who hit him with the car and left him to die. This is annoying and I think that was my last episode.

Queen of Tears: PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE be good!!

Doctor Slump: Well I guess no more cutesey moments and cringe, now we have dramatic acting and tears. I look forward to it.

LIVE WATCHES

Impossible Heir
Those who wanted "moar politix" certainly got that in episodes 3-4. Unfortunately, even though some of us were able to watch them about a week early due to a Hulu slip-up, it has not felt like an extra hardship to have to wait an extra few days for episodes 5-6. Here's hoping they'll get better. Week one was so good.

Wedding Impossible
This one has split the community. The FL is pretty well universally loved by the fans, tho.

Queen of Divorce
While not a master class in script-writing, the last episode did contain some pretty solid commentary about what constitutes a strong attitude towards marriage at the wedding ceremony, but then undercut them in the last five minutes with our "lead couple".

FxC
Such a simple show. Predictable each week, in a good way. Hopefully, it stays that way!

Dr. Slump
While welcoming the exit of Park Hyung-sik's aegyo, the reason for its departure was disappointingly trite.

LYOL
Almost done! With luck, Ha Joon will actually get scripts offers after this, and with even more luck, he'll pick a good one.

...clueless heo-dang himbo smacked upside the head by petty jealousy and lovestruck adoration. It was frigging adorable.

This is spot on as the perfect description of Kim Young-dae in Sh**ting Stars (obvs), @javabeans. And I take your point about being delightfully surprised to find that he found his niche.

May I also offer a shout-out to those of us much newer to the K-drama universe who saw him for the FIRST time in Sh**ting Stars, watched this character, became smitten with him...and came away thinking KYD could act? The constant disappointments afterwards have been, well...large. 🥹😢

I saw him a few things before Sh**ting Stars, and he was always a little wooden but not terrible (like in Moon in the Day where he had hit a new low in acting...i still can't believe I finished it). He definitely suits comedy more and more physical comedy. I feel like he has more fun with it and lets himself go. He does get a bit overact-y, but he gets the timing right.

I loved the old hotel setting (with Choi Taejoon the ghost hunter). I also liked the twists surrounding the Older Actress (and she was awesome!).
In the meantime, Chaebol is growing up and finding true friends. I still hope that he and Father (and Hyung) will also find way to each other (and heal what needs to be healed between them).

Queen of Divorce
Oh Minseok.

Wedding Impossible
Jihan, I see, you have a plan... ha. 😁
And Ahjung, you are not interested, not even a tiny bit, I see... ha.😁😁
This show is still a delight. With surprises and unexpected complexities. I love it. Is it Monday yet?

Everyone Loves Me, 3eps
I needed something light and undemanding and this cdrama fitted the bill perfectly - quite outspoken and online badass Heroine is having a crush on Hero and tries to act sweet and innocent around him to attract him (not working, he hates it). The funny thing is it is the Hero himself, an online shooting buddy of the Heroine, who gave her such an advice during their online conversation. And now he is basically jealous of himself. 😁

Still there with Live Your Own Life and a bit behind with Unpredictable Family.

Doctor Slump: Like many folks, I didn’t love the truck of doom development. But there have been so many other things that I did love, including in these episodes, so I’m going into this weekend hopeful that they will handle the situation well.

Older Dramas
Sungkyungkwan Scandal: (up to episode 14) So far Yong-ha is winning the fav character battle. I said during Reborn Rich that I would just watch SJK swanning around winning all the time with a cocky smile on his face and I meant it. But Yong-ha has lovely other sides that he carefully hides under his pretty hanbok. That scene where he confronted Jae-shin as he was sneaking out? Fire. Slow clap for uri real OTP. The main couple is growing on me though. I like watching Seon-jun realize that his inflexible convictions might not be entirely accurate, and then bending them slightly. I don’t really like watching Hyo-eun do anything at all - she is aggressively annoying and how Seon-jun could resign himself to a tiresome life with her is beyond me.

Yes and I think in this case TOD did something different than I’ve seen so far (but I am relatively new to kdramas). This TOD #2 actually made the villain also give the same advice as the mom. Not a redemption arc because he didn’t deserve it but an understanding arc and finding a path forward from the resentment/anger.

Wedding Impossible (Episode 3-4) - Mood: D
I don’t know, it’s a struggle watching this when there’s really nothing narratively that’s interesting. The family drama is crap not worth discussing about, the side characters lose out to the cameos, the 2FL gets a nice edit because this is building up a love triangle down the road, and the OTP is just doing as most romance leads do and flail into compromising situations. It is also disappointing that the one character with any narrative potential (2ML) is being given that scorned ex development.

Flex X Cop (Episode 9-10) - Mood: D+
Hmm, it feels like I’ve seen a cult as a procedural case in way too many shows already, so I can’t say I’m looking forward to revisiting that again especially when it ties into FL’s dad’s downfall. I’m not sure where we’re going with ML’s mom but it’s a rollercoaster after they dropped that revelation and had ML move on. Imagine if the twist is that it’s truly just a suicide with nothing shady behind it: that would be glorious trope subversion I could get behind? But there’s that opening scene though.

Doctor Slump (Episode 11-12) - Mood: D
It’s crazy how everything is pretty much skippable except the 2nd leads, who finally get content because this is the time we have to endure 3rd-quarter nonsense (of course it was the Truck of Doom in the cliffhanger). For a moment, I had thought I would see the supporting couple carry the show like John/Ji Wan did in Love is for Suckers, but then of course that park date happened and I knew the whole point of that was to hash out drama and pivot back to the Kyung Min crap. Sigh?

Branding in Seongsu (Episode 17-20) - Mood: D-
With the revenge arc coming at the eleventh hour, I’ve fully checked out of the plot which has already jumped the shark too many times. Wasn’t the show about finding out who the rabbit mask killer was while navigating a soul swap? This plot twist not only isn’t great, it also feels like the writer didn’t know where to go and just winged the plot to meet the deadline. I have to wonder if the actors were given the whole script at once because their acting also seems like they’re adjusting on the fly.

Captivating the King - It ended. I'm so sad to see it go so soon. It was worth it while it ended.
This drama is really good though. Gave us 3 strong cameo performances in persons of Choi Dae-hoon, Jo Sung-ha and Sohn Hyun-joo. I really thought he would return with Hee-soo from Beijing. I was a bit disappointed that he didn't.

I'm going to hold on to the fact that Lee In and Hee-soo were never intimate - hot kisses from JJS and undergarments, or not.

I didn't quite understand what went on in Hee-soo's head by wanting to not appear before Lee In after her return from Qing. Make it make sense cause it is glaring nonsense to me and one annoying form of something worse than noble idiocy.

@kiara what implications does it have when a King moves his palace residence to another location because the Queen Dowager threatened to leave the Palace? The mention of that act shut the QD almost immediately and it kinda piqued my interest on the severity of the action of carried out.

Talking about the Queen Dowager, I liked her defiance towards Lee In. "You want be back at the palace? Come and find me yourself." Moments like this is why I like Sagueks that are properly done. You don't see this kind of grandstanding in modern kdramas.

Goryeo-Khitan War - I was moved to feel for the Empress. However progressive Hyeong-jung was and conservative she was, she made her point clear. I blame Hyeong-jung for how she ended. It could have turned a different way. At least she didn't go Queen Wonyoung's way. While she was still Princess, she told her husband "half of Joseon belongs to her. And that he shouldn't leave her out of discussion of state matters". Not that she didn't have the right to make such statements cause she did have every right to every word she said. The Empress did nothing compared to Queen Wonyoung and I came to realize she overcompensated for it.
I hope those officials know not to mention touching the military's dues again to satisfy their own paychecks. Sometimes I find this people parasitic, and I was very disappointed to see Gang Gam-chan just watch it happen without saying a word in opposition. It was only the King speaking on the side of his military.
The death of evil Chunju guy's adopted son pained me quite a bit. Even though it was late, I liked that he never lost focus of what was supposed to be.

Mr. Queen - I've gotten to the most iconic line of mine in Mr. Queen: Incompetence is sin. Episode 11-16 was a blast.
2nd iconic line: Let me remind you once again who this palace belongs to. EP 11.
But I'm not so excited to complete it. Unless I'll have to skip to episode 20 ending.

Finally the real Queen will premiere today.

I haven't watched CTK, but if the king wants to move his palace, he can. The Queen Dowager is the most senior member of the royal family but not the regent over the king. He is a grown man with all the authority a king should have. Sounds like a seniority power struggle.

LIVE YOUR OWN LIFE (Ep. 46-47) The writer and director are trying too hard to give every character personality transplants and happy endings as the series stumbles to the finish line. The idea of adding at the eleventh hour a slew of new actors for tertiary characters’ immaterial stories shows how off-course the show has been for a long time. Poor Uee, she has the least amount of screen time for any weekender lead. Her character has not have had any alone time; she is constantly running around putting out fires even after moving out of her Mother’s dungeon.

SHOGUN (FX) (Ep. 3) Edo Lord Toranaga escapes his hostage status with the help of the British pilot Blackthorne who continues to forge favors with unlikely enemies. He cannot grasp the honor in Japanese deaths as he has done everything possible to hang on to his life. He still cannot understand Mariko’s husband’s final suicide mission instead of saving his own life. He also could not understand her stoic reaction to it - - - the concept of an honorable death is more foreign than this strange land. His reward is to be forced into a regiment commander to teach European battle techniques. It is an honor and a curse as his newfound mutual respect with the Edo Lord.

HOUSE ON WHEELS 4 (episode 3) The MCs are extremely nervous about meeting their guest. None of them had ever worked with her or part of their friend circles. It was awkward as a freshman mixer. Kim Ha-neul confessed that she only came on the show because it was in Jeju Island (which photographs magnificently) and eating Hyo Jin’s famous Jeju gimbap. A lot of childhood nostalgia in this episode.

Flex X Cop (through Ep. 11): Sad there are only two weeks left. This show has been an absolute delight, in no small part because it treats its characters with grace. Even trashy reporter and the guys on the other investigative team are proving to have a conscience. Coffee with a view is Yi-soo and Kang-hyun’s friendship language. Kudos to the writer for developing their relationship so naturally.

Wedding Impossible (through Ep. 4): Nearly every other drama FL risks seeming bland in comparison to Jeon Jong-seo's Ah-jeong. She is absolutely owning the role and elevates the entire show. But as much as I enjoy watching the two players unintentionally play themselves into falling in love, I hope Do-han doesn't get sidelined too much. I know he's not the ML, but his character deserves to be more than the mechanism bringing the OTP together.

19th Floor (C-drama, through Ep. 4): Needed a break from chaebol succession storylines and figured a thriller would do the trick. It's fun and my kids are enjoying it. Curious about how it'll sustain the excitement for 30 episodes, but a balance between the mysteries of the haunted world and the real world might do the trick.

Exploration Methods of Love (C-drama, completed): Gave us two intelligent, strong-willed leads in a twins-switch-places plot, brought them together and then flubbed the ending. A power couple should combine forces and be stronger together, not succumb to last-minute noble idiocy and an uneven relationship dynamic in which one half of the "OTP" seems waaaay more invested than the other. Not to mention they let the bad guy completely off the hook.

As a geologist I had to click play on Exploration Methods if only to see how my profession is depicted in a C-drama. It has been a scientific laugh riot, from her ultra fashionable "field" clothes to her dinky little decorated rock picks. If she studies meteorites she'd actually need Thor and a sledge hammer. Perhaps she is able to sound intelligent when talking contracts and social media but every line of written dialogue about geology is word salad/utter nonsense. Note to screen writers: geologists are not hard to find for consulting or questions and are typically eager to explain.
I thought I'd hang in until the ML finds out she has a PhD but maybe not. Too painful.

Wedding Impossible I love the chaos that our leads cause when they're together.

Queen of Divorce This drama had an interesting premise that the writer didn't follow at all. I'm sorry for Kang Ki-Young but after this drama, I don't think he can be a ML.

Doctor Slump The last 2 episodes were very disapointing. I don't like the writer chose a villain for this story, it wasn't necessary.

Wonderful World I'm disapointing by the new elements, it's so unoriginal...

Flex x Cop I like how the leads tell each other their truths, he was childish, she doesn't trust anyone.

Queen of Tears D-Day \o/

The Impossible Heir It's quite meh for now, the story, the characters and the acting.

Pyramid Game Myung Ja-Eun comes straight out of a Japanese manga, the style and the character. She's my favorite!

Branding in Seongsu I have no idea what the writer is trying to say with this drama but it would be better if the characters were consistent and didn't act differently in each episode...

Eye Love You I like how the FL is a food lover, it's quite surprising she doesn't cook herself. I'm not sure about the plot with the scientist...

Starting:
Queen of Tears: I haven’t seen more than the trailer yet, but I am looking forward to it. The trailer has as much crying as the bumper cars have collisions, and though I like to be a bit sad with Oppah Soo-hyun, I hope there are bits of plot between wailing binges. It seems in the trailer as if huge amounts of crying, overwhelmingly melodramatic, are played for laughs. Well, let’s see.
The Secret Royal Inspector and Joy: This comedy that I had at first shelved because it seemed to light weight and generic, is becoming more and more interesting and complex, and I love some og the “side” characters a lot. (Like; a lot!) I have giffed some moments that caught my eye, and they are mostly not about the OTP. A bit like with Byeun Woo-seok I started gaffing the moments one evil guy was not killing anybody, but this time it is not because the rest of this drama is “Dødens Pølse” (=The Sausage of Death = Boring), but because this guy is so intense every time he is on screen. Honestly, he seems like a much more interesting person than the main character, though not one I would SMLS over until he got his daddy-issues sorted out. Man, he’s got at baaaad round of daddy-issues.
https://www.dramabeans.com/activity/p/1546606/
https://www.dramabeans.com/activity/p/1546997/
Branding in Seongsu: I have had some good talks with @hacja on the hangout about this drama
There are many ways this could end intensely and well, but we dare not hope that all the mystery – and there’s a lot – will not just be “solved” with the K-drama equivalent of “Because I say so!”
Nevertheless, I will have to watch and hope til the end.
Watching Continued:
Doctor Slump: Last Sunday’s episode was way below the rest. I hope the writers tighten the harness for the last episodes. I don’t mind comedy mixed into my thriller – at all –as long as it’s tight (and the drinking binge with the in-laws wasn’t) - and anyway, to me the most important here is the story of how they manage neurodivergence, Rejection Sensitivity, depression, and PTSD, but I also wants to know what happens with the evil co-worker and the Truck of Doom.

I imagined him as a reconvalescent from that life of humilition, lies, murders and greed.
Somewhere with few people, unknown as for what he was. A simple, industrious life, slowly changing from sorrow-filled exhaustion to quiet happiness. Having to help the kids would be a good way to make him stay alive in spite of realizing what he had been part of and still not kill himself or turn himself in, and also a good way to slowly allow himself to be happy - also because children can sometimes make it hard to stay sad.

I didn’t get around to posting last week, which is why this one’s longer than my usual long posts.
Beware of possible ***SPOILERS*** that may lie ahead.

COMPLETED:

LTNS - Though it was by no means perfect, I still find myself thinking about this show long after reaching the end of the final episode. I loved its black humor and indie-movie vibe. While the bumbling-blackmailer escapades may have been the hook, the heart of the show was the evolution and gradual disintegration of a marriage. The fault lines were apparent from the start: Jin seems to have chosen eager-to-please Samuel not out of love, but because he promised not to cheat on her. Starry-eyed Samuel, on the other hand, sees Jin as his soulmate. When the couple’s physical passion fizzles out, they secretly try to fulfill their separate needs outside the marriage: Jin through a one-night stand with her sleazy ex, and Samuel through a platonic (so far) relationship with the married woman next door. It begs the question: which is the bigger betrayal…the physical or emotional one? Or are they equally bad?

I appreciated the show’s lack of moralizing when it came to the various unfaithful couples—showing that in some cases (such as the lesbian couple and the elderly lovers), infidelity is not always a simple case of right and wrong. And speaking of right and wrong, Jin and Samuel’s investigative methods ranged from the uncomfortable to the reprehensible—not to mention the criminal. No matter how awful their behavior, though, I was always on their side. A huge amount of credit goes to the outstanding lead actors. Esom brings her usual depth, nuance, and quirkiness to the role of Jin. The schlubby but endearing Samuel, Ahn Jae-Hong, was not on my radar, but now has given me some incentive to watch Chicken Nugget.

I’m not sure I liked the ending. It felt significant that Jin reached out to Samuel after the divorce to apologize, since during their marriage she’d always resisted expressing her feelings. I thought the show should have ended there; having them get back together (if only for sex) may have pleased audiences, but for me it undercut the drama’s message.

No discussion of this show would be complete without mentioning the frequent appearance of water in many guises. There are floods, both literal (Samuel’s taxi) and metaphorical (Jin and Samuel’s apartment during the blowout argument that ends their marriage.) A huge delivery of water bottles blocks their apartment door. Samuel and his neighbor bond over their love of cleaning, beginning with their meet-cute at a car wash. Samuel swims over to spy on the couple in the cabin out in the ocean. Missed opportunity not naming the ML Noah rather than Samuel.

Killer Paradox - Though it came across as more style than substance, I loved the first half, with its David Lynch vibe, dark humor, and moral ambiguity. I was looking forward to seeing how reluctant “Batman” Tang—encouraged by his tech-nerd “Ro-Bin”—became increasingly confident in the role of cold-blooded avenger. It was so disappointing when the wacko killer (a terrifying Lee Hee-Jun) showed up, drawing the focus away from Tang and turning the show into a standard-issue Kdrama thriller. Choi Woo Sik, playing against his usual nice-guy type, was a revelation as antihero Lee Tang, while the effortlessly sexy Son Suk-Ku put his own stamp on the familiar role of the tenacious, hard-boiled detective.

Black Knight - This felt like a show nobody needed, especially when there are already any number of excellent post-apocalypse dramas. I found it unimaginative and predictable, with inconsistent world-building and a cartoon-character villain. Characters that might have had interesting backstories went largely unexplored, which was a waste of some excellent actors—especially the ever-intriguing Esom. 😥 The story meandered at a leisurely pace until everything wrapped up in untidy fashion right at the very end. And perhaps the worst PPL ever: cancer survivor Kim Woo-Bin CGI-smoking Marlboro cigarettes.

FILM:

Blind - Kim Ha-Neul plays a blind woman who is a passenger in a taxi that gets into a hit-and-run accident. With her sharp analytical skills and heightened sense of smell and hearing, she helps police close in on the murderous driver, who goes after her and another witness, played by Yoo Seung-Ho. Nothing groundbreaking, but it’s suspenseful and well acted. Held my interest throughout.

DROPPED:

Knight Flower - Dropped after episode 5. Not awful, but not compelling enough that I wanted to keep watching. Everything felt a bit flat: the plot didn’t hold much dramatic tension, the campy humor grew tiresome, and I wasn’t feeling much chemistry—except perhaps between the FL and her servant. I couldn’t work up enough interest to stick around for the character reveals. I didn’t even bother to read the recaps to find out how it ended; I just assumed that the main leads were NOT long-lost brother and sister.

Daily Dose of Sunshine - Dropped in the middle of episode 1. Another one of those shows (most often a medical or police drama) where the writers clearly ignored or hadn’t bothered to familiarize themselves with how things work in real life. While I don’t know about medical training and hospital protocols in South Korea, I can’t imagine that someone completely unfamiliar and inexperienced with psychiatric nursing would be allowed to look after patients. On her very first day on the job, the FL triggered a patient into a violent manic episode, getting herself injured in the process. She then went to her former tutor to have him explain basic facts about bipolar disorder (which he didn’t get entirely right, by the way). Shouldn’t this information have been part of her basic training? I applaud the show for trying to educate viewers about mental health disorders, but it would have made a lot more sense dramatically to have the doctor explain the condition to a family member than to a nurse responsible for working with these patients.

Whisper - Dropped about halfway through episode 1. Just didn’t grab me.

Death’s Game : I’m so late on reviewing this but I want to give my appreciation for the story, directing and acting. This one for me is like antidote to US drama like 13 Reasons Why by delivering the important message of why suicide shouldn’t ever be the answer no matter how hard someone’s life is. Despite the heavy issue this show trying to convey, the directing was properly packed and somehow manage to be light enough so it wasn’t uneasy to watch. All the performances from the actors were well delivered but honorable mention for Lee Jae Wook because he ate his cameo role whole and left no crumbs.

The Impossible Heir : Overall, 6.5/10? The scene transitions quite odd a lot of times, the time jump from 5 years to another 5 gave a big void to the story, and till episode 4 I don’t really see the purpose of triangle love story in the first 2 episodes. The triangle love story plot reminds me of the drama New Country, which I don’t think that particular plot is necessary neither interesting to add as conflict. And I hope it will not become like drama Oasis where this triangle love story become the main reason for the fall out between best friends. I really dont want to hate KIH. Just give me strong bromance, please. And yes, the FL acting just not enough. I personally think it’s not her facial expressions, at least for me she doesn’t look awkward on the screen. But, she doesn’t have strong presence either despite her beauty. That’s weird with that kind of face someone could be so flat. And also I think it’s her voice. I think hers is the kind of voice that would take a lot to work on, it was heavy low tone yet not deep. Or, maybe she speaks without understanding the script, that is why her delivery was boring and soulless. Also her background character or the lack of it wasn’t helping either.

Pyramid Game : The main appeal of the show for me is the fact they don’t create all power with no brain villain, quite the opposite, the villain is surely powerful yet she isn’t all money but also mind gamer. She is calm, poised, and manipulative. It made her difficult to defeat because the heroine has to be careful and tactical in her attack or she will be buried before be able to launch even a slap on the wrist. And that exactly our heroine. Soo Ji is a very well written character. She is as composed as the villain and a street smart given her life experience of moving places multiple times. It is so entertaining with the all psychological battle because there was no soft ball thrown from the antagonist yet the hero managed to always hit back. Also with courage, empathy and easy going manner she obtain a powerful thing the evil girl could never which are friends. People follow her not out of fear but respect and trust. Acting wise, Bona nailed it. I’ve always like her since GG 97. At some scenes when she is talking back the delivery was so good I felt cathartic. And I think Jang Da Ah also performed a well job given this is her debut project...

Wedding Impossible : Story wise, I don’t think it is close to perfect, but the whole show is so much fun. The vibe is calm yet chaotic for me which is a new experience I felt from rom-com. The calmness I think came from how both leads are soft spoken despite the ridiculous situations they put themselves in with all their hijinks and childish antics. I’m loving it.

CURRENTLY WATCHING:

1. BLOOD - This vampire drama is bordering on makjang for sure. It's watchable but I keep thinking that Lee Dong-Wook would make a much cooler vampire doctor/surgeon.

2. A KILLER PARADOX - This one is taking me a while to get through. Not sure why because Son Seok-Gu is excellent in it.

3. THE TALE OF NOKDU - I can now confirm that I have been hit by the Jang Dong-Yoon Truck (TM). Every drama I've seen him in just shows what a versatile actor he is - he literally inhabits his roles. It doesn't hurt that his is *ahem* absolutely gorgeous!

4. THE GENTLEMEN - Just started this Netflix series by Guy Ritchie. It seems promising so far but I have a feeling it's gonna tip into extreme violence before long.

FINISHED:

1. SOMEBODY FEED PHIL - Apart from a couple of inaccuracies (No, Phil, the Taiwanese greeting is in Hokkien, not Mandarin and the restaurant in Scotland is not Malaysian food - it's Scottish-Malaysian fusion) it was fun and informative as usual.

WEDDING IMPOSSIBLE is the favourite for now with the FL who is tough on the outside, but really a marshmallow for the underdog, including Ji-han who thinks of himself as so smart and suave, but is really pretty clueless.

Looking forward to QUEEN OF TEARS, but also worried after watching IMPOSSIBLE HEIR. With Jae-wook and Jun in the lead, I foolishly thought that nothing can go wrong. I forgot the writer and director who are producing a thriller which is anything but thrilling!

Got my bean for QUEEN OF DIVORCE. Still like FLEX X COP and how ML remains enthusiastic about his detective work. It is nice to see that he slowly appreciated by the team. The police chief is corrupt after all! He was so nice at the beginning.

Started WONDERFUL WORLD, but needed a break already after ep 1 after watching all that grief. I read the recaps and might just jump in for the new episodes this weekend.

This version of SHOGUN went back to the original novel and has been completely re-worked- and is a Japanese show rather than an American one. That being said much of it has been shot in Canada. The 1980 version was actually more authentic in its location as still the only major American drama to be filmed entirely in Japan. That being said this new version has consciously striven for authenticity in almost every other possible way including the scriptwriting.

Yes. The script was originally written in English and later translated into modern Japanese in Tokyo. The final translation was done by a playwright who specializes in "jidaigeki" (period Japanese) and who did not speak any English.

While I have great respect for Kurosawa I think that his comments were quite unfair and stemmed from a lack of appreciation for the fact that SHOGUN may be recounting Japanese history but is still a Western novel in which those events are viewed through Western eyes as the protagonist is John Blackthorn who is an Englishman. If it had been a Japanese novel I might have a different opinion.

What I'm watching:

_ Captivating the King (12/16). I'm struggling to find the motivation to watch this drama. I'll get my bean, but sometimes I think I should have dropped it in the first episodes.

_ Wedding Impossible (4/12). I'm enjoying this series. It is far from being perfect, but the script is quite clever and I'm looking forward to knowing what's happening next.

_ C-drama The story of Minglan (7/78). I wanted to start a historical c-drama which was not a wuxia, and this one was a usual recommendation. At first it was difficult to understand who was who, and the drama spends a lot of time showing long discussions about domestic issues, so the pace is really slow. I now understand why there are 78 episodes. I admit the first three episodes were hard. Fortunately, I have found a blog which explains all the episodes, characters and lots of details that I could never notice without this help. I love the settings and cinematography, everything seems realistic, as a true journey to XI Century (Northern Song Dynasty).

_ Variety Nemo Travel: A trip to Spain (6/12). So funny! Lovely actors Shin Ye Eun, Kang Hoon and Yoon Park having a great time in Spain.

What I have finished:

_ Mini C-drama My Husky boyfriend. It was silly but funny. I liked Ryan Cheng here (I had watched him in Familiar Stranger before).

_ Mini k-drama Death's Game. Great show. I preferred the first half over the second one, but it was an enjoyable watch.

Just noticed I missed the last few WWW threads! So, what have I watched…

DR SLUMP. I guess the last two episodes haven’t been the best in my books, but I’m ready to continue and hoping for the best. This one surely is a rollercoaster ride. But I was coaxed on willingly, by all the beauty and … flower petals! The question remains: will I get off all dizzy and with an aching back? Or would I want to do it all over right away? Time will tell.

Finished KNIGHT FLOWER, which I put off forever, because… I didn’t want it to end? Ha!!! The end did not disappoint though. I’m quite happy everything was tied up neatly, I was happy for our couples, and didn’t mind the “missing kissing”. The two of them still were super cute together and definitely will live on as a happy couple in my head. Plus the king? I imagine he would have a great time having some drinks with the one from THE MATCHMAKERS.

Binged through UNLOCK THE BOSS, which I found quite entertaining! Love the found family in this one (also ML’s parents are the best!), and I like the overall setting in a “techy background” (though most of it was “common” company politics, which I didn’t mind either, for some reason!).

I started GHOST DOCTOR, because Netflix practically started playing it on its own when I logged in. So far it’s entertaining, too, but I gotta admit I expected “more romance” after the setup in episode one. (I mean, younger ML basically squeed upon seeing his love interest from afar… and then? Nothing much…?!) 🤔😂

Super excited for QUEEN OF TEARS, which I’ll start today. Also waiting for EYE LOVE YOU, which’s release I seem to have missed somehow up till now, but got a notification about it along with QOT. Fingers crossed!!!

Hahaha, they could have an exceptional bromance! Telling each other all the woes and vent about those infuriating Left State Ministers; share how to stay alive in a palace full of people plotting to take over the reign; best ways to disguise yourself when you want to venture outside; when to act all clueless; how to tell your ministers apart; etc. etc.
Ah, it’s the plot of a drama I never knew I needed. 😂

*SCREECH* UNLOCK THE BOSS!!!!😆❤️ That's one of my favorites, and I'm so glad to hear you enjoyed it!!! I just love the sweet goodness of the ML.

I also loved Ghost Doctor, but yep, it's very light on the romance - it's more a bromance, and what turns into a really lovely mentor-mentee relationship. I hope you continue to enjoy it!! I loved the sweet coma ghosts 🥹

LOL! Taken out of context, “sweet coma ghosts” is an interesting label! 😂 Though I agree, the three are growing on me, too. The bromance is real!

Yes, I admit that your praising comments about UTB also played a role in convincing me to finally start watching it. 😉 🫰👏 The ML is a cutie; just remembering how he wanted to buy beef for his parents from his first bigger paycheck and then…! And how he lived through the shaman “procedure” just for the sake of his mom. He’s a Good Guy.

Yes, this just needed some adjustment of expectations. I guess sometimes the initial setup can be misleading…! Love the bromance, too, which finally kicked off for real. (Dunno, I think I am at episode 10 or something. 🤔)
Also love the running gag about random people pestering the poor security guard about deleting CCTV footage of Koh Seungtak (while he’s “acting suspiciously” 😂)

Memory rewatch, ep 12/16

I was so sure I would never rewatch this show. It had wrecked me the first time, why would I put myself through it a second time??

But we lost a friend's mother to Alzheimer's recently, and I was reminded of it. Being in a very sombre mood, needing a serious show to rewatch (rewatching shows means it isn't too straining on my nerves because I know how it ends), and remembering the stellar acting led me to click play and get sucked in immediately.

Some random thought:

The acting. The casting. The directing. Everything is incredibly spot on. It could be such a feast for the eye if it wasn't giving me panic attacks left and right.

Kim Ji Soo, the actress playing Lee Sung Min's wife has such a sweet reassuring voice and speech, she is perfect for her role, like many others.

I have never liked Yoon So Hee's acting, but I like her role here so it makes up for it.

I can't believe so many sensible people know about his disease and still let him drive himself around.

The extremely complicated family and friends ties, in every direction, not just our core characters, are fascinating to say the least. The emotional bonds in expected and unexpected places surprise and wreck you at every turn.

Lee Sung Min and Song Sun Mi playing not-lovers... I was heartbroken on my first watch :D, but they are still lovely. Unbelievable actors both of them.

I even like Jun Noh Min's character, he is complicated, and perfectly acted.

I HATE Lee Ki Woo's horrible role, and the fact that he takes so many villain roles. Ugh.

I hate the premise of child hit-and-run, and it could turn me off this show if it was one degree less amazing.

I'm glad I'm rewatching this. It would have been a pity to only remember the panic attacks it gave me.

WEDDING IMPOSSIBLE is my favorite new show. It is witty and the FL shines. It is good to have a new favorite show as my very favorite show is the daily UNPREDICTABLE FAMILY which is now winding down. As we ended the week, we got to see our FL and 2FL in their wedding gowns and the ceremony is about to start. How amazing this show has been- at the end of 121 episodes I am still smiling. I do not know if Monday will be. the final episode or not but this has been a real highlight of my drama watching since it started last September.

My wife waited until the show was complete and then binge- watched CAPTIVATING THE KING. She really liked it.

My wife and I have continued to watch DOCTOR SLUMP but were a bit disconcerted at how the most recent episode ended. Even so we continue to love the show.

This last week saw the penultimate episodes of THE GORYEO-KHITAN WAR. The Khitan have slipped around the main Goryeo forces and are staking everything on grabbing the Goryeo King (technical military term: a decapitation strike). This may not seem like it but it is actually a gamble which is rooted in and caused by the comparative weakness of the Khitan forces. If they do not immediately succeed, the Khitan Army will be wiped out by the now superior Goryeo Army who are in hot pursuit. The King has asked the ordinary people of Goryeo to help man the walls- even women have taken up bows. This weekend’s episode’s will be the dramatic finale. I can’t wait.

Our Weekender, LIVE YOUR OWN LIFE is also winding down. While, still better than the previous one a great deal of potential was wasted. Still it has had some unique features to it: The true protagonist of the is drama is not our ML but Tae-min, our ‘official’ 2 ML. Even if he does not ‘get the girl’ (as in the FL) it is he, and not our ML who was the true dramatic counterpart to our FL and the male character most in need of gaining a new independent or at least more fulfilling life. In contrast our ML had the opposite problem from the FL and our protagonist: He was living an independent life already but against his will. We have four episodes to go and to me the real question is whether or not our protagonist will in fact finally have a life that is truly his own.

We are also looking ahead to QUEEN OF TEARS, which is finally here.

Here goes my hope to catch up with dramas I'm behind with this week - as if, ha! Guess I'll have to reserve a spot and try to aggressively binge at least something this weekend. The list is already unimpressive but my progress with it is even less so...

DR SLUMP: I watched Ep11 and it left me seriously questioning why I'm even still bothering with the show. Decided to do the rest later, then read the weekap and damn, this did not inspire me to continue at all! I've famously once said that I'm willing to watch ANYTHING, no matter how bad, for PHS because he always delivers even when in a trash drama... but here I think that writing and directing gave him a disservice too big to keep even me invested. I know the guy, he absolutely CAN do much better than that! Perhaps dropping the show before my high opinion of him starts to shake for real would be a wisest way out of this unfortunate situation. I'll take a cautious peek at 13-14 and decide.

WHITE CAT LEGEND: *sigh* It just ended and the spoilers I managed to fish out made me pretty confident in finishing it at the comfortable slower pace. Certain major events stayed true to source material as well which is rare af almost always a plus. Btw, while we're at it, look at this funny MV for ending (recorded by all main cast together) - not really into workaholism anthem theme, but everything else is cutely hilarious, esp the choreo)))
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dKvZlhd1AVU

ETERNAL BROTHERHOOD: I'll catch up with it tonight/tomorrow and elaborate further, I swear! On merciless FF during FL's scenes, which will save me time AND braincells.

It's a really weird situation because I haven't liked PSH this much in ages (since FBND) and despite all my worries I enjoy her and PHS together, but bipolar plot and forced been-there-done-that-and-much-better cutesy feel just off. Especially when sandwiched in-between of a Macau mafia murdering people, hyung-from-hell being a cartoonish villain and now a ToD too?! All of that in a supposedly healing romance drama. If this show was a meal, I'd be seriously afraid to get indigestion from all its mismatched ingredients!

WATCHING
Wedding Impossible: I'm thoroughly enjoying this imperfect romcom. It's goofy, meta, and keeps surprising me with the directions it takes. Plus, I can't get enough of our FL.

Reset: c-drama Started this on a whim. It's offbeat in just the way I like. It's the kind of show that reels you in and suddenly you're reacting to the events on-screen like a D-list actor in a bad film.

STARTING THIS WEEKEND
Queen of Tears: Looking forward live watching this with beanies!

Eye Love You: I'm waiting to see how Netflix releases this. All at once? Two at a time? One at a time (as is currently being released in Japan)? That will determine if I start this week or not.

COMPLETED
Captivating the King: This could have been truly memorable. I kept wishing it had been ... more. Instead it was... pretty good. Solid from a production standpoint but missing some scenes and direction that could have elevated the storytelling. And I wasn't overly excited about the tidy but weak ending either. The soundtrack, however, is fabulous.

Everything else is on hold atm, including Doctor Slump, Flex X Cop, and The Hope. I was going to watch My Name is Loh Kiwan last night but realized I can't handle heavy right now.

Have a great weekend beanies! 😉

It's been an interesting binge because you start to really feel the characters' experience, especially their exhaustion towards the end. The directing and editing do a great job of creating tension, and I'm frequently wondering how the actors all felt having to present the scenes over and over from different angles with their characters responding in different ways. It's so creative!

Knight Flower: Fun with an engaging cast, but preferred to play it safe rather than venture into any really unique or uncomfortable territory (of course this reaction could be in part because this is the second show in three months I've watched where the widowed daughter-in-law of a treasonous minister leads a double life and has to figure out how to avoid Joseon's extreme laws on both remarriage and shared criminal culpability).

Orange Days: So thrilled that Netflix is suddenly licensing classic J-dramas, including ones that as far as I know have never been legally available before in the US. This one is a nuanced, beautifully-acted look at five young people making the transition from college to the "adult world" and has a similar vibe to Kitagawa Eriko's earlier Long Vacation.

Flex x Cop: 7.5 Losing the fun and turning into a same-old-same-old kdrama starting in day 11.

Dr. Slump: 6.5 So they use drunkeness, excessive cutesyness, a pillow/stethoscope fight and ToD to transition from a character development show into a drug/murder mystery.

Captivating the King: 7.001 As obligatory wrap-up-every-thing-for-everyone final episodes go, this show earns an extra 0.001 for doing it slightly better than average.

Goryeo Kitan War: 6.0

Wedding Impossible: 8.5 The FL has interesting ways of making a living; last time I saw her she was cleaning out a mint in Money Heist.
2FL seems pretty decent, especially by the low standards of chaebol heiress 2nd leads.
Day 4: Sa-Wol / Dong Geurami !!!!

Impossible Heir: __ On hold, likely 🩸
Wonderful World: __ On hold, likely 🩸

Queen of Divorce: 6.5

WATCHING (But with a resigned heart and a soft grip so as to be able to let things drop. Hoping for better viewing days ahead)

-A WONDERFUL WORLD: Wonderful World is a world of hurt. It’s well acted, and Cha Eun Woo looks faboulous here with longer hair and casual clothes—he, in fact, is the least spruced up, made up (as in make up) character in the show and he is a sight to behold. However, the grief is overwhelming, and I might need a break.

-WEDDING IMPOSSIBLE: It won the impossible face off for now, as it actually has some characters who have spark, discernible relationships, and personality.

DROPS (so many drops this year—imagining them falling into a rain bowl making beautiful, if not slightly haunting, sounds)

-DOCTOR SLUMP: Plink! I leggo the aegyo.

-IMPOSSIBLE HEIR: Plot! Plot! Dropped through a slowly unclenching fist. When one’s hastily written fan fiction about the ML and his Plot Chart in the Apartment captures one’s fancy more than the show, it’s time to go and maybe do some elaborations/rewrites of the fan fiction or maybe not.

NON-KDRAMA WATCHES;
-SHOGUN: Beautifully shot and acted. I love how the show centers the Japanese. (I must admit though that when they talked about fighting battles in Korea, it got my hackles up.) This show makes me want to know more about the political machinations, which means the characters have come alive enough for me to care.

-SUCCESSION: When a show starts with the chaebo patriarch stumbling out of bed and peeing in confusion in the corner of a mansion, it gets your attention. So many neuroses, so many good one liners, so much rich (in every sense of the word) family messiness.

SECRET LOVE (2014): Finished. This was unapologetically, full on Makjang, and I loved it. It kept me pushing that play button while drinking my morning tea making me late for my day. The boys were bad, the girl was self-sacrificing to a fault. The ending reminded me thematically of Secret Affair. Redemption through punishment.

HIGH END CRUSH (2015): This is a stress rewatch for me. Just makes me laugh and forget about my troubles. Fun, wacky and I love the psychologist!! Up to episode 14. I’m never bored with this one and can rewatch again and again.

SHOGUN: Watching with the whole family. There is a lot to take in! I am enjoying.

SAIMDANG (2017): I’m finally back to watching this. I’m a little over halfway. So interesting to see a main character with a whole bunch of kids to take care of!

Time Between Dog and Wolf. I liked that, I think, he plays 3 or 4 versions of the character and had both anti hero & anti villian moments. That stuff is cool to me. I also really like when an actor just changes their expression or tone, within the same scene, in like the same moment, and it's like they are a different person. Going from gentle & affable to cold & menancing. Honestly, I never seem to have the right words for when actors differenciate in such ways but I enjoy seeing it. My favorite scene/moments was after he confronted the tech/information guy about being left alone. Aww, poor him. That devastating guilt & shame and the whole aftermath of him having to come to terms with it. While I liked the whole thing relating to his memories, that scene is the one I liked most in the entire series. I ended up disliking the love interest more and more as the show went on. I think it's apparently a fine line of giving the characters a purpose and just having them being busybodies.

Two Weeks. The fugitive! The most eventful 2 weeks haha. It was hard for me to get really into this because I really hate corruption stories/plots and he was just brow beaten just "cause"; because he was too timid, because he was able to be threatened, because of jealousy. The unfairness of it all. Sigh. But I liked how resourceful and smart he ended up being which proved just how underestimated he had been all along as well as his untapped potential because he had self worth/self loathing issues. The bad guy is such an evil bastard. It's crazy how bullies get pissed off when people stand up to them. There was no real reason for him to want or need to kill Jang Tan San because even if he mentioned him, no one was listening to him anyway. And then he just became obsessed with killing him *because* Tan San wouldn't just die like he wanted him to. To make it worse, he wanted to kill everyone Tan San cared about as well for his ego I guess. I don't even know. He was just evil and spiteful.

Fly Daddy Fly. The main reason I watched this was to see the father/son pairing of Iljimae again haha. It made me chuckle that the dance moments just seemed so random haha but I guess if got folks who can dance, why not showcase it haha. The actual story is fine.

Gunman in Joseon. Maybe because I've seen Iljimae, Time between Dog & Wolf, and Knight Flower, I just feel kinda numb. I'm seeing the same or similar dynamics play out and the only reason I decided to try this was for the action anyway. I don't particularly like sageuks due to all the political schemes. Many times when I watch them and palace politics are the focus, I wonder how anything got done in the past between the ineffectual kings & the greedy and self serving minsters. It's typically too reflective of current times for me feel anything other than frustration and anger and I didn't know this included actual historical aspects which just makes it worse. Clearly I'm only for...

Clearly I'm only for fantasy and/or fusion sageuks. I don't know what I was expecting, if I was expecting anything, but I certainly didn't think I was would be seeing something based in a real historical event. And I'm curious how they could even live anywhere after the events they took part in. Where did they go? (Though I suppose that doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things since they got their happily ever after)
Sidenote: I'm typically not into Clark Kenting because I think it relies on others' stupidity or cluelessness but I'm glad that wasn't the case here since EVERYONE instantly knew or suspected he was the same person haha. Still that takes a hell of a lot of confidence to look and sound the same yet straight lie to people who know you in a country where you can instantly be killed as a traitor.

Watching this, along with the other dramas, made me grateful that they're making shorter length episodes nowadays haha.

One thing that adds to the credibility of ML's disguise is the fact that it's been 4 years. In an era where photos were only starting to become a thing - and none of the characters had his portrait stored for comparison purposes. So, logically, dude was away from home for 4 years, aged (we don't see that because the filming didn't last this long ofc, but we can add this detail in our imagination), returned dressed/behaving very differently and speaking another language on top of that... No wonder people who knew him before (many quite briefly) were confused.

P.S. Also he had a LEGAL Japanese ID. Suspecting a foul play is one thing - boldly accusing a wealthy AND influential foreigner, let alone from Japan, of being a wanted local traitor was another. Neither the baddies nor Joseon authorities atm could make such a move without an iron hard proof to back their accusations, that just won't look good diplomatically speaking.

Still better than "magical" plastic surgery historical dramas sometimes resort to in such situations)))

I greatly enjoyed ML's manipulation skills in the show, he was darkly brilliant at gaslighting everyone who recognized him into thinking they're just projecting and in reality he's not a carbon copy of "that dead Joseon guy". So much fun! Now that's a dude undercover with his brains intact and busy)))

0

You've got a huge dose of LJG this week, respect)))

I have a polarizing feelings about TBDAW: I loved ML's amnesiac baddie era but absolutely hated him when he was THE hero prior to it based on sheer moronicy of the man - seriously, if "too dumb to live" was a human, that'd be him! Post-recovery from amnesia version was slightly more tolerable but just slightly. I was intrigued by what became of him in the epilogue tho, but we barely got a glimpse of that 4.0 version, which is a real shame imo - it seemed like he's finally found a balance by then. And LJG's acting was rather raw back then, and not always in an enjoyable way. But Key is still the hottest mess ever)))

TWO WEEKS is probably my favorite show of his (modern one for sure, with AATM super close by the virtue of being sageuk). Yep, villain was rather cartoonish in his reasoning, but it felt pretty convincing somehow because that's the kind of an irrational behavior you can buy from a "more brawls than brains" mob boss. I also didn't like FL's (ML's love interest, not the prosecutor one) actress - heard she improved a lot later in her career, but here she was just plain bad. Little girl acted CIRCLES around her, so I consider her the true FL of the story))) And dang, her onscreen interactions with ML were fantastic! Makes me sad he rarely plays a father, he's just so good at it!

FDF never quite got anywhere with its premise, so it's a rare case when I fully understood why the movie flopped despite finding it an OK watch.

JOSEON GUNMAN does feel a little secondhandy if you're already familiar with LJG's body of work, but otherwise it's a fun show, even if a little too long/slow (it got 2 eps extension near the end btw, which messed the pace up). When I feel like watching him playing a jerk, I usually choose this show as the least stressful option. Much prefer his pairing with FL here unlike in TBDAW, where they looked VERY pretty together... and that's it, I couldn't ship them for the life of me! Here I still cringe at her supposedly playing 15y.o. at the beginning (uhm... with all due respect, girl, why?!), but later they're nice and believable as OTP. In fact, you can easily ship him with both girls (I'd rather have him act with 2FL in another show than date her irl tho, but men and their priorities lol), which is a rare thing in his case and proves drama's overall quality. Agree that HE is not really HE because we know history and can guess that most of these people are hella doomed anyway... But stopping at the right moment isn't that bad either, more historical angst fests should do that instead of forcing "artsy" open endings where they clearly do not belong!

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, I didn't *hate* him but I didn't know how to describe him haha. Lackluster kinda comes to mind haha. I mean he was apparently the perfect everything: perfect student, perfect rookie agent until he ran into Mao during operation and he was driven by pure rage, not a single other thought in his head. His foresight was absolutely non existent and you're right he certainly fulfilled the "too dumb to live" by almost getting himself killed haha. I think Kay was the criminal version of what made him a good rookie agent. I liked V3 most and I wonder about V4. V4 is just living the rest of his life undercover with barely any tethers? But his fighting certainly seemed to get better haha
The element I disliked the most was the romance. All aspects of the romance were ugh to me. It's almost disappointing (to me) to think he still ends up with the female lead in someway

For Two Weeks, I was reading about it and recapper said how they appreciated that Tae San takes responsibility or ownership of his choices leading to all this but I'm so confused because he doesn't seem ,to me, he had any better options. He was to take the fall twice. Well, argubly maybe he was forced once and didn't care the second time. He's not a killer and if he had run, it's possible the Boss would've had him found and killed anyway. I don't know. Tae San was just a kinda sad character who was molded by self worth/self loathing issues. I kept wondering if In Hye's actress had more or less chemistry with the detective since they ended up together in reality.

Wasn't the premise of FDF just a father fighting to defend his daughter and becoming friendly was with the boys? I mean I don't think it was ever about winning but how far he was willing to go to be protective. It didn't leave much of impression overall but yep, it's just fine haha.

I preferred their pairing in JG over TBDAW too. I thought her character was better. Maybe that was the benefit of them gaining more acting experience? She was supposed to be 15?! Haha
Once again I wondered if he had more or less chemistry after learning they dated in real life.

I don't watch many sageuks so I don't know what you're referring to with the "more historical angst fests should do that instead of forcing "artsy" open endings where they clearly do not belong!"

This was what made me so unconvinced - he was presented as a typical kdrama all-rounder geeenius, but gosh, nothing about the guy actually proved that! He messed up spectacularly just about everything he touched! His code name should've been "disaster"! I can't believe he managed to survive these 16 episodes with his godawful secret agent skills AND somehow to continue working in that field. I prefer to think he and FL never got together again lol, they were certainly better off separated.

I agree that recaps were quite... judgemental of ML in TWO WEEKS. Not sure if it's a cultural thing, era thing (I feel like today's viewers would be more understanding of his terrible circumstances) or Tae San was simply not glamorous enough, so to speak - it's one thing to root for/relate to a rich hot bad guy ML who's as cool/swoony as he is a mess and another to feel the same for a low-grade mob at the very bottom of his life in every single aspect possible. Granted, show did a great job at presenting him as "bad news" as possible initially. Or maybe that's just me being immune to the ex-convict stigma because I personally know a lot of such people...

I'm just not sure what was LJG's character role in this movie. Yes, he was a mentor... aaand that's it. I've found his role shallow and far below his skills, even back then.

Yep, 15 at first and 19 after his return. Very few people can convincingly pass for someone half their real age and she's just not one of these people. Idk why drama didn't just age her role up a bit... or kept mum about leads ages altogether.

If you need examples... MOON LOVERS ending (they even filmed reunion in modern times and then just cut it... but left the hints that it's possible... why? I didn't even WANT leads to reunite there, but this was very weird!). MR QUEEN's ending, tho it wasn't that angsty. GU FAMILY BOOK's infamous ending. Tons of cdramas from last 2 years lol. That's one trend I can't wait to see dying so I can spit on its grave^^

WEDDING IMPOSSIBLE: enjoying this show mainly due to the old school kdrama vibes and the charm of the cast. The supporting cast is coming into more focus and while the chaebol grandfather remains weirdly opaque, the villain trio are amusing and the FL’s family made me laugh this week (“we’re eating fruit.”)

IMPOSSIBLE HEIR: Still watching but really hoping next week is an improvement plot-wise. I seem to be in the minority as while I find the 2FL more interesting than the FL so far I don’t like her very much. She has lots of maturing to do before I will ship her with LJW.

BOTH: Watching these two shows together, it is impossible to avoid the thought of what a better show the Impossible Heir would be if they’d had the sense to cast Jeon Jong-Seo from Wedding Impossible as their FL.

Winter is ebbing here, so less excuse to watch dramas.

Wrapped up and will miss CAPTIVATING THE KING. One smart king.

Taking a pause on MY DEAREST. Instead, went to my winter backlist and watched MOON EMBRACING THE SUN. I guess I'm not a fan of convoluted storytelling.

For a breath of fresh air, switched to 99 DAYS WITH THE SUPERSTAR. Kim Tae-Hee is such a sunny screen presence! But the show belongs to the very fine Japanese actor Hidetoshi Nishijima. This was my first time watching both these actors, and it was highly enjoyable. I'm so impressed with Korean actors speaking fluent Japanese in this story.

FLEX X COP is still my happy watch of the week. Unsure about WEDDING IMPOSSIBLE, but sticking with it for a few more weeks.

Re-watch this week is THE GREATEST LOVE. I love this story of redemption. And I love Gong Hyo-jin and Cha Seung-won in these roles -- just a wonderful cast in this series.

For something new, I tried READY, SET, LOVE on Netflix, my first Thai series and only six episodes. Ordinarily I stay away from dystopian stories as real life is hard enough to navigate. But this one is a trip! Halfway, and I'm intrigued.

Wedding Impossible Still fun, but a little less enamored this week since I'm still having trouble warming up to the ML. Finding out he ghosted all those townspeople he sweet-talked into selling their land didn't help. I find it weird how Do-han is so sidelined since Ah-jung and Do-han are supposed to be BFFs and Do-han and Ji-han are supposed to be brothers that care about each other. I hope to see him less alone next week!

Flex x Cop My comfort watch. The characters just getting better and more likable and supportive with each episode - even the jerk sunbae from the other team. It helps that while the FL manages to toe the line between assertive cop and cooperative person.

Three Body Up to episode 16 of this cdrama. Finding out what the "three body" is referencing blew my mind. Every episode is intriguing now.

Decline Short cdrama completed (20 episodes of 10 minutes). Reminds me a bit of League of Nobleman - same dynamic of two guys - one unconventional and one conventional butting heads and solving mysteries - with BL vibes. Just in a shorter form.

DR SLUMP
I coming here to be a fierce defender of the show 😁
Firstly seeing Park Hyung-sik finally play a character again that’s petty, childish and unafraid to show his emotions is refreshing, especially after watching him be Mr Stoic in his past three dramas okay?

Secondly, I’m into vibe of the show, overworking till exhaustion is always seen as the norm, in fact not doing so is seen as a moral failing. Aren’t our protagonists always rewarded for working really hard? So seeing our studious FL Ha-neul not bearing the fruits of her labour, and instead being taken advantage of and becoming depressed is actually quite relatable.

Like it’s basically incomprehensible to me that a doctor drama doesn’t focus on the profession so much. Our protagonists just hanging out and chilling and being in love 🥰

Yeah maybe I’m in my no plot just viiibes era (especially considering I enjoyed WELCOME TO SAMDAL-RI), but damn does this drama just make me all kinds of happy. I think it’s the rejection of the rat race, not blindly following along with what society expects or deems to be ‘successful’. It’s also nice to see more dramas focus on this, HOMETOWN CHA-CHA-CHA and DAILY DOSE OF SUNSHINE all have similar themes. Yes I recognise capitalism and the cost of living make it almost impossible for many to afford a break, tho it’s just nice seeing our main leads face the disillusionment and challenge the need to work tirelessly.

Still lastly and more importantly Yoon Park must always, I mean always play the role of a loving father, I won’t have it any other way 😉

Also yay and hello javabeans!!! 👋

I second this. I'll also defend Doctor Slump! *puts on my armor suit*

If you haven't been depressed, you might not know that overworking and being a perfectionist for too long, especially when you don't have your support system around you, lead to depression very easily. And as to accept the help from a psychiatrist is seen as almost being mad in some societies every nowadays, it makes it even more painful because both the person who suffers from depression and their loved ones keep blaming something, someone, for what happened, instead of accepting that it's just like menstrual cramps: some have it sometimes, some have it all the time, and some never experienced it. It's still considered an alien thing in some societies, and that is a harsh truth.

Feeling guilty for having depression is also another facet that comes with having depression or perhaps other mental health problems of other kinds. And the road to recover from such trauma needs a lot of time, space, break, reflection, consultations, understanding from their loved ones, understanding and accepting of oneself completely even when one turns out not to be what one had always expected one would turn out to be, and other things. It's a gradual process, but it also brings with it great learnings.

So even if my life, Ha-neul's, and others' are somewhat difficult and we are still struggling right now, there are many people that are like us and/or struggle with us! And tbh, not to be sarcastic, but life nowadays contributes a lot to people having mental health problems, so I hope these issues are becoming more into the light and in the correct depiction enveloped in hope and reality.

Captivating The King ep 15-16 It was a mostly satisfying ending. Overall, what I would remember most of this show is JJS's excellent portrayal of the King. His character was the one I most empathized with and mostly cheered on to succeed with his revenge. His happiness is what I wanted the most and with that I am glad he ended up happy in the end.

House of Ninjas ep 3-8 Its shinobi and not ninja, duly noted grandma. I like the family and their personal quests. The show did a good job fleshing out each character and their struggles in attempts to live a "normal" life. Only for each to find out their real calling. I especially like the youngest son's discovery of the famuly secret. His enthusiasm in finding out they are special and his grandma's way of training him. I love their house and its secret places. Overall, i really like the show.

Eternal Brotherhood ep 1-4 I finally got around to starting this. I am not a fan of LYN's short scenes but this was filmed years ago before his popularity so I understand. LYN's character is in a very interesting position working for the "enemy" camp. I will continue to watch to see how it goes.

To Watch List:
Shogun
Pyramid Game
Queen of Tears

As LYN himself puts it, prior to NYZ (who himself was pretty self-aware regarding his moral grayness too) he played ONLY bad guys lol. It's just the level of baddiness varied... a little *chuckles* Di Lin is very much antihero (textbook "noble intentions, questionable methods" dichotomy), but since his screentime is so scarce this important detail may slip under the radar of viewers' attention. I do lament him not having a bigger presence in the story, but would that even be possible in current censorship climate? He's the one doing all the dirty work so other two can keep their hands clean, but at least he's busy with things important for the main plot and not babysitting troublesome besotted princess(es?).

Word of the mouth is that in the novel ZCN wasn't even a main love interest. Tho reports about whether her and ML eventually broke up for good or he did marry her as a second wife mainly for political reasons are quite unclear...

Yilin and Ka Dan are at least well aware in which genre they exist lol, what this likely means for their ship and thus behave accordingly. ZCN does not.

@jillian to broaden the target audience thanks to this "sweet romance with a cute girl"? Looks like it didn't work as intended then)))

@gikata it had the opposite effect definitely. Cutesy romance does not a place for a drama with Eternal Brotherhood's theme.

Happy Saturday!!!
I feel like my drama watching week begins on Saturdays because of this.
Finished:
Alchemy of Souls Part 2: review to come on my fan page. For now I'll just say Loved- ML, Cast, fantasy world. Liked- FL first 4 episodes but once they started with flashbacks it was just a reminder of how much better season 1 FL was both in acting and chemistry.
Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo: because this is highly recommend and on everyones watch list I knew I would like it. And I did. Light, happy, highly interesting sports life topic. Loved the leads playful chemistry and their friendship to romance journey. Great cast, great friends, great family interaction EXCEPT FL DAD. His response to her during show was unexceptable.

Sejak/Captivating The King came to a good conclusion, Flex x Cop is really fun to watch, Branding in Seongsu is fun, too, but I wonder how they will make the necessary happy ending work after this weeks reveal? And I’m STILL watching Between Him And Her.
Wedding Impossible is getting even better, I totally love our FL. Moon Sang Min /Ji-Han still looks too young (he’s supposed to be 26 here, is 23 in real life and could easily pass as a middle schooler), but his acting makes me overlook that with time. “I will thoroughly seduce you...” made me swoon…
Bossam: Steal The Fate is really good, I’m at Ep 17 now and it wasn’t slowing down or getting boring as longer dramas often get in the middle. That reveal about the SML in Ep 17!! So well done… This show is quite recent, but it feels like such a classic Sageuk that it could easily be older than ten years – no offence, but a mark of quality! The reason I picked this up is actually that I read that Missing Crown Prince will be a sequel to it, and that starts this weekend, so I’d have to hurry up… edit: MCP was postponed to April; I read that filming is taking longer than planned and the weather has been bad in SK.
Another lunchtime watch I picked up after Beanies recommended it a long time ago: GoHo’s Starry Night. This is from 2015 but still easily watchable (I can ignore the many male wrist grabs, since FL has already punched one ML three times in the face…). It may be a web series, short and without a huge budget – but can this be the most adorable, delightful, charming, and heart fluttering short romcom I ever watched?!? Spunky GoHo and the three men around her in a great comical office setting: I can’t remember when I squealed with delight so many times. Acting, music and editing are great. And what makes it even better for me is that I’ve seen Kim Young Kwang in totally different roles before this, namely an erotic serial killer and a recluse in silent love 😊
I started Wonderful World, and I didn’t like those first episodes at all. The drawn-out portrayal of the terrible loss of her child is very painful to watch and wonderfully played by Kim Nam Joo, but that’s not my problem. Aren’t her life, her family, her child, her career all too perfect in the beginning? Wasn’t the culprit behaving in such an unbelievably crude way to her when she asked for an apology, just to justify her murdering him? IMO, he didn’t “get off free” for the death of the child which was (presumably) an accident, and she didn’t get a too harsh sentence for murder with intent. Her husband should certainly not cover her trial on TV, and his statement “She had no choice but to do what she did” is not acceptable. All of this is lazy writing to me, intended to bring us on FL’s side. I’m sure this is going to turn into a cheating husband, past secrets, political and corporate conspiracy revenge story, and since I saw that Kim Ji Eun of “Why Her” wrote the script,...

And Go-ho's Starry Night is one of the sweetest, squee-y-est, most charming dramas (short or long!) ever - and the lovely Kim Young-kwang, to boot 😍

@javabeans Sh**ting Star is one of my all-time favorites for the reason you mentioned: “the perspective on the staffers and crew toiling behind the scenes”. From time to time, when I want to re-watch something fun, it is the scenes “chain-smooching amidst outbursts of giddiness at how adorable they find each other” because as you said “we really need more of that in our lives “

On to official business:

Completed
Marry My Husband: I’m in the minority, but I enjoyed the Oh Yu-ra character and Song Ha Yoon (Soo Min) is now added to my very small list of kdrama actress that I will keep track of (Jung So Min and Park Min Young rounding out the list).

Almost Done
Live Your Own Life is now in the penultimate weekend with the finale next weekend. This is my 2nd weekender and it will probably be my last because I finally realized that I do not enjoy the Main Couple (prior experience: The Real Has Come) because they are just too sickly sweet for my taste. But I stuck with LYOL because of the “Mystery at Daegwallyeong Pass (which is now on my bucket list when I travel to Korea). In the end, it was my favorite character Kang Tae Min who solved the mystery because he stayed calm and was determined to discover the truth when all around were trying to railroad the non-culprit into taking the fall. 😊😊

On-going
Doctor Slump Enjoyable, but still have not finished last Sunday’s episode which I need to do before watching today (Saturday). I’m not sure why it requires 16 episodes but as I said. . .it’s enjoyable and the characters (main and supporting) all have their specific charms. Love the 2nd couple.
Marriage Impossible This one is a mess. It will either be a delightful mess or an ugly mess, but I’m intrigued by the half-sister Choi Seung Ah. I’m glad this drama is only 12 episodes.

Cannot Wait For. . .
. . .The Midnight Studio. Not only is my very favorite Yoo In Soo in a main role, but my 2nd favorite Seo Ji Hoon has a guest/cameo role (unfortunately as someone who becomes a ghost. I generally dislike dramas with lots of sadness and crying (yes, I watched the script reading) but I'll put myself through it for In-soo.
Thankful it will be on Viki. 😊

Still loving 'Flex x Cop'. Rolled my eyes when it came up with Yet Another Sinister Cult Plot, but it actually turned out pretty exciting in the end. A perfect switch-your-brain-off weekend watch, this.

Being a sucker for the Despised Illegitimate Son trope, I am watching two Despised Illegitimate Son dramas. Simultaneously. And trying not to get them muddled up.

'Wedding Impossible'. Well, it's hard to tell who's meant to be the male lead and who the male second. But that just adds interest to the mix!

'The Impossible Heir'. This really, really wants to be 'Money Flower', but 'Money Flower' is a slow-building symphony, and this is just a lot of short staccato tunes. No real flow of story. Still this is catnip to me. Adore it.

Lee Jae-wook is so compelling, even when he's speaking cheesy dialogue. (And when the evil eldest son is trying to poach Han Tae-oh, and says 'You're desirable...' there may have been murmurs of 'I'll say!' in the audience).

I thought Captivating the King finished well, but I would have liked a little more passion between our leads. And maybe a little clarity as to just how the King expects to be able to spend the rest of his life with his beloved.

Binged a short Thai high school horror drama "Enigma". Eminently forgettable (as in I had to look up what it was about four days after watching it) but enjoyable in the moment. Best feature was the FL, who was remarkably feisty despite being short, scrawny, plain, young and bespectacled. The ML, despite being tall, good-looking, mysterious, sculpted, tattooed, etc. didn't stand a chance.

Since there was space in my midweek viewing schedule, I decided to finally watch the untamed. Great decision. The photography, music, and sets are gorgeous, the actors are of course also gorgeous, and although the plot is the usual cultivators and evil clans silliness, the chemistry between the actors and the fun they're evidently having make it very worthwhile.

Currently watching:

1. Doctor Slump: It depicts depressed people really well. I commend that the crew and writer has done a terrific job at portraying person with depression. It's realistic and moving. It consoles the hearts of those that are going through it, too, if I'm not mistaken.

I can't say much about PTSD because I don't have it (but who knows?), but I guess the message that you have the right to be angry at the person who did you wrong for as long as you'd like. You may choose to forgive or not to forgive, and that doesn't make you a better or worse person. I think that's a great message: sometimes I feel like we have this default way of thinking about doing good things we forget that the best thing is to accept and process our feelings, every feeling, without labeling it or trying to be a "good" person. Every feeling is there for a reason anyway. All of them are valid, so don't disregard any of them.

For the reasons above and some other reasons, I still enjoy this show a lot. But if I have to be completely honest, I'd say that I love seeing how the OTP is slowly helping each other out in times of crisis. It's easy to see when someone is happy, but it isn't easy to be there when someone is unwell. I think their bond is really, really strong now with a very solid foundation.

Finished:

1. Meet Yourself (C drama): I liked it! It's the first time I saw an FL that demands respect and being treated as a partner in life instead of someone whom the ML has to protect and infantilize. It's a healing drama that I think I might enjoy it even more in my future rewatch. I watched it in fragments this time because I have had some busy weeks. I think I'll also recommend this one.

2. My Name is Loh Ki-wan: I think this one is highly recommended. The show is beautiful in some strange way: There are many violent in various forms being shown, but somehow I felt it might be true in reality. Song Joong-ki's and Choi Sung-eun's performance is so rewarding to watch. I think this is already the time for any drama production in any country to do something similar: filming a drama or a movie about being/ living in a foreign country. I think we all can benefit from those shows as they might broaden our minds.

3. The Book of Life (Mexican animation, correction thanks to Isa): I think this is very underestimated. It may look and feel childish, but I think the animation is SO beautiful to watch. Highly recommended if you're into something like this.

4. My Best Friend's Wedding (Hollywood): LOVED Julia Roberts in this movie. I think I now understand why she is regarded as one legendary actress in Hollywood. There is something about her that is so endearing even when she plays an imperfect character. Her character always seems like an ordinary person who is charming and has sex appeal. There is this relax vibe from her that makes me feel calm just by watching her projects. She is like your typical girl-next-door, but a very...

Queen of Tears — Episode 1 is down….and leeeettttssshaasay, this is going to be a VERY divisive drama, I already see it, lol. The ending of episode 1 got me scratching my head in hilarious disbelief and laughing so hard … but probably not what the writer intended, right? There’s such a HUGE gap in likability factor between our ML and FL, and it’s frankly quite mind boggling. I want to spit and kick and fight everyone who even dares to look the wrong way toward our adorable, principled and warm Hyun-woo (played phenomenally well by Kim Soo-hyun) and I just want to tear the hair off our AI robot that goes by name of Hae-in to elicit *some* micro crack in her exterior. What a surprisingly unlikable female lead from a writer who normally gives her female characters some meaty character texture to chew on!

Wedding Impossible — Speaking of unlikable female characters — if you wanna see an absolute gem of a very appealing and likable female character, head out to this drama. It’s a hoot! And can you gift me with a friend like A-Jeong, please, UNIVERSE?!

Captivating The King — I’m really glad I watched this drama. It wasn’t perfect but it jolted my imagination in all the marvelous ways, and I’m forever grateful for it! (And yes, JJS is an acting juggernaut and the love scenes are steamy and deeply emotional and the best in dramaland this year!)

The Impossible Heir — I will give you a hint, Beanies, on how to stick with this drama. Pretend real hard that it’s actually a comedy, and it all will make sense, trust me. But alas, if you have a hard time pretending, it’s on a track to be So Bad, IT’s FUNNY (please, don’t confuse with It’s So Bad, It’s Good dramas, it ain’t it!) I’ll keep watching it because I need unintentional laughs in my life, so who else is with me on this hilarious journey?

My Love Who Came From the Star: watched twice
I've been sick with a fever (39/102 degrees) most of the week, so have been travelling in outerspace a bit myself. Watching something twice was suitably contemplative. And I don't think it's a show that was actually supposed to make sense? It's made up of equal parts emotion and handwavium. I have a lot of thoughts, but being ill is making them hard to type out in a readable manner.
The ML in this views his relationship as one of ownership/protection. As far as I could tell, the only thing FL brought to the relationship was looks, and a need to be protected.

The Impossible Heir: Holy time skips! This is the most convoluted drama ever. I don't understand why we're supposed to hate Sung-joo when he has done nothing bad and why should we side with Chairman Kang and his gaudy shirts. "People might think he was Kang Tae-oh instead of Han Tae-oh." Methinks eldest son In-joo hit the nail on the head, but if Tae-oh really is Chairman Kang's (second) illegitimate son, then that'd mean he has four baby mamas.

Wedding Impossible: Ji-han knows that Ah-jung only accepted his brother's marriage proposal to spite him, but does he know that Do-han doesn't love her? Otherwise, he is actively stealing his brother's fiancée and hitting on his sister-in-law. Ah-jung isn't trying very hard at pretending to be engaged. The chaebol circle is small. Word will easily get back to Grandpa that she and Ji-han spent the night together in Busan and his white knighting her from the jerk blind date. His revenge against frenemy actress Na-ri would make any girl's heart flutter. Since Chae-won drove Ji-han to the hotel, I bet that she saw their "hug."

Doctor Slump: After escaping Truck of Doom once, it just must be Ha-neul's final destination to get hit. I was indignant on Jung-woo's behalf that Ha-neul never apologized to him. She was the one who wanted to keep their relationship a secret at work, so he said he had no girlfriend. Her ignoring Mom elbowing him is so much worse than his "stealing" her bus seat. Not only did Jung-woo apologize, but he apologized in advance for their future fights. Ha-neul's back hug should've been "I'm sorry and thank you for coming."

"It's never my fault" attitude of many k-romcom FLs is one of the reasons I've never fully warmed up to the genre. As much as I like seeing handsome men grovel, it should be deserved and not just because they're men so they're OBLIGATED to take the blame and apologize first all the time. Oh, and "cutesy" female-on-male violence, because it's SO FUNNY, right?

This is always at the back of my mind, and it somehow stops me from thoroughly enjoying this couple's cutesyness. No matter how you look at it, Jihan comes across as somewhat of an unscrupulous jerk. Especially now that he genuinely has no reason to discourage either of them from this marriage because Grandpa has already sealed it. We, the audience, are privy to his bro's orientation, but otherwise, dude, what's your deal?

So i went from a pretty sparse picking in the new year to suddenly having ALL these dramas to watch. ALL the romance too! Haha..

Current Watch:
Wedding Impossible (4) -
so cute, loving Na Ah Jung and i’ve warmed up to the ML. I’m worried about how they’re gonna spin the brothers’ relationship with regards to Ah Jung. And shockingly, i kind of like the chaebol family - nothing new or great about them but they’ve not gone straight on the dislike list as the antagonist typically do.

Like Flowers in The Sand (5)
I adore this drama, the main pair, the villagers, the kids in the flashback. The ML is just such a sweetheart and Du Sik is an enigma. I’m savouring this watch but also dying to know the end!

Impossible Heir (1)
Episode 1 or who am i kidding..Lee Jae Wook had me. Right now I’m more interested in the guys and not too keen on the FL.. i snuck a peek at the recaps and her development or the setup of a love triangle is not something i want for this drama. But i’m only at episode 1 so it might be better than i think.

Eye Love You (4) - Chae Jong Yeop jdrama! Waiting for netflix episodes to catch up before i continue this one. As somebody who watches k and jdramas and live off subtitles, i get unreasonably annoyed that the FL doesn’t know all the basic words or takes so long to look up stuff she doesn’t know 😅

I see Kentaro Sakaguchi mentioned in the fanwall, then lo & behold Netflix showed me his new movie. So of course i clicked play on The Parades. I enjoyed the first hour of the movie, but came away not really understanding its conclusion, partly maybe because my belief in the afterlife is so different from the movie. But it was all still beautifully shot, with great music and the added bonus of having Ryusei Yokohama too.

P/s i checked the OST and it was by Radwimps. No wonder i loved it instantly!
