News bites: March 14, 2024

Yoo Yeon-seok, Chae Soo-bin

  • A new romance-thriller is on the horizon called The Number You Have Dialed (roughly translated, working title), with offers out to Yoo Yeon-seok (A Bloody Lucky Day) and Chae Soo-bin (The Fabulous) to headline the webnovel adaptation. As an arranged marriage couple who realize their love through the latter’s kidnapping, the series is currently in discussions to air on MBC. [Hankyung]

  • Park Hyung-shik (Doctor Slump) has reportedly been cast in the new noir and melodrama Desperado. In a tale as old as time but still oh-so-good, our hero enters a gang undercover for revenge, only to fall in love with the enemy’s daughter. With filmmaker Jang Hoon (A Taxi Driver, the 2017 film) attached to direct and scripts by Ryu Yong-jae (Money Heist Korea – Joint Economic Area), the drama is aiming to release on an international streaming platform. [YTN]

  • Speaking of writer Ryu, he’s also been busy working with Yeon Sang-ho (Hellbound) on Netflix’s sci-fi horror Parasyte: The Grey, which will be launching next month on April 5. Adapted from Hitoshi Iwaaki’s original manga, the series released new character posters showcasing our three main leads: Jeon So-ni (Our Blooming Youth), Gu Kyo-hwan (D.P. 2), and Lee Jung-hyun (The Family Is Coming). [Newsen]
  • Sparkling up the drama landscape, it’s time to get party fancy for KBS’s Beauty and Mr. Romantic, where our cast is bedazzled and ready for a night out on the town. Starring Im Soo-hyang (Kokdu: Season of Deity) and Ji Hyun-woo (Young Lady and Gentleman) amid the weekender’s large cast, the premiere’s red carpet will be rolling out on March 23 next week. [News1]

  • In more casting news, Lee Sang-hee (Daily Dose of Sunshine) has been added to the lineup for SBS’s Acquaintances, becoming besties (again after One Spring Night) with CEO Han Ji-min (Behind Your Touch) and working as a CFO at Han’s headhunter company. Also starring Lee Jun-hyuk (Vigilante) and Kim Do-hoon (7 Escape – War for Survival), the office romance is planning to broadcast later this year. [News1]
  • Over on MBC, the promos continue for Chief Detective 1958 with a retro-style couple poster of Lee Je-hoon (Taxi Driver 2) and Seo Eun-soo (Unlock the Boss), while Lee Dong-hwi (Big Bet) gets a turn in the spotlight in his character teaser. Airing in the weekend slot following Wonderful World, the period-action is slated to premiere on April 19. [MBC (1), (2)]

I read "romance-thriller" and "love through kidnapping" and jumped to the conclusion that Yoo Yeon-seok plays the kidnapper and Chae Soo-bin has Stockholm syndrome.

Acquaintances has been added to the long list.
Desperado sounds like it could be an interesting watch and one for me to follow through the weecaps. Looking forward to hearing more to see how dark it goes.

Those were my reactions exactly!! 😊 Acquaintances sounds good, and Desperado sounds interesting, but will likely be too dark for me ☹️

But its Park Hyung-shik! Hoping it WON'T be too dark for any of us. I want to see him in all his handsomeness.

I've missed Yoo Yeon Seok since The Interest of Love. He's such a versatile actor and Chae Soo Bin makes a good match for him. Hopefully the drama delivers.

1. I have a huge soft spot for Chae Soo Bin, so I am here for it.

2. Desperado could be interesting. At least he won't be cutesy in this, lol.

3. Still haven't decided on this one.

5. Acquaintances, hopeful maybe.

I see Park Hyung-sik, I watch. End of story.

Did the detective in the iconic show have a love interest/wife character? If not, should we expect tragedy at the end of this prequel? Gotta prepare myself if I have to watch Lee Je-hoon cry.

1. I'm intrigued. And I really like Chae Soo Bin. But I'm more excited about the other drama she's supposedly going to be in (Treat Her With Caution), although there hasn't been news about it for ages.
2. Happy for PHS to have different type of role, but not likely my cup of tea. Not saying no just yet though!
3. Love this cast, but sci-fi horror is definitely not for me.
4. This seems to have some potential but I draw the line at weekend k-dramas. 40-50 ep c-dramas? Yes. Weekenders? Nope.
5. Excited about Acquaintances/Between Greetings! I also like that we're starting to see more single parents in k-dramas.
6. Curious about this one. With Lee Je Hoon, it's going to be good. Plus they had a boatload of expectation placed on them given it's a prequel to a famous, long-running show. I'll probably follow along with recaps.

@Unaspirated - Story of my life girl, story of my life. It's a genre I particularly stay away from. And trust the man to pick one. Well, he has been running down the road screaming to all who would listen to cast him in a noir, so I guess it's a jackpot for him - it's hard to go wrong with Jang Hoon if the PD's credentials are any indication.

I want to see him in all his handsomeness.

@Diana Hansen
Though it would be hard to make him unhandsome for anyone, I have a feeling his look might be different from what we are used to. He is growing his hair. And that I find very interesting. He didn't do that for OBY even.

1. Yoo Yeon Seok - I have been wanting to watch him since Narco Saints which I liked a lot. I don't know yet how I feel about this but will give a try.
2. Do I have a choice but watch this?
3. Not my cup of tea, but will watch this for Jeon So Nee. For her sake I hope this does very well.
4. Nopes
5. Office romances can be inherently boring without the right cast, and this does not feel like it. Too many cooks....
6. My cue to watch Signal that's been sitting on my bucket list forever.

3 - still very much hmm...
4 - just pure curiosity - who's the writer?

1. Okay, I like both these actors, so I'm intrigued.

2. Please let Park Hyung-sik be paired with an actress with whom he has LOTS of chemistry. Chemistry between characters is important in general, but in a story like this, I feel it's super crucial. Also, I haven't been able to watch him in anything after 2021's Happiness so I'm hoping this is good.

3. Why, Gu Kyo-hwan, I almost didn't recognize you there. I can hardly see any trace of my adorable anime boy from D.P. Not complaining though.

4. Still don't care about Beauty and (formally the Pure Guy) Mr. Romantic.

5. A Lee Sang-hee and Han Ji-min reunion! Yessss.

My first thought in seeing YYS and CSB I immediately wondered if they have paires up before in another project. It felt like they had but apparently this is the first time they worked on a project together? Anyhoo, I got this on my radar and will wait for more updates about their drama.

@peiyeelai
Happiness and Our Blooming Youth were both very grown up and mature. Soundtrack #1 is a mature romance too. Unfortunately goofy PHS sold more, whether 2017 or 2024. It's a marvel he is picking a noir crime thriller as his next project. I can think of so many who are happy sticking to the same genre.

Our Blooming Youth is a youth/fusion saeguk. It is not the usual serious saeguk like the The Red Sleeve, The New Age, and The Queen's Umbrella. So I can't take him seriously.

As for Happiness, I have yet to watch him in it.

It's not about the age. I am talking about the kind of role and his interpretation of it. Personally I think Doctor Slump is a difficult subject for a romcom, and if it has helped even one person to reach out to a therapist, it has done its job, so I guess I can overlook his occasional goofiness because there are tons of very serious monollgues that make it worthwhile. And much as I am not a fan, that part does seem to have a huge audience so who am I to judge. I said the same thing about King the land. It was not my cup of tea, but so many absolutely loved it and still do. If I had not watched Red Sleeve, I might have not credited Junho with the kind of performance he gave in TRS. So KTL should not define my thoughts on Junho's ability.

I seen him twice...most of the time and read the roles that he play are more or less the same. And if he likes those roles, Good for him...and others who love him. But as for me, I need a storyline which is more mature.
As for Jun Ho, I know him prior to KTL, and it pays that most of his roles are diverse.

2

Otthokhaji!!!

*Paces around to figure out whether to respond and give up..* LOL

Now that you say you have not watched him, it makes sense because whoever told you he does the same roles told you wrong. I guess I would do myself and PHS a great deservice if I did't respond as his fan.

After leaving a trail of talent with a remarkably varied roles in Nine, Sirius, High Society and What Happens To My Family, this man started his lead roles in 2017 with SWDBS. In the last seven years (out of which two in military service) he led four projects, all very different from each other: Suits (a law drama), Happiness (a zombie drama), Our Blooming Youth (a paranoid crown prince), Soundtrack#1. I should also throw in Two Lights Remulino (a blind man) and Juror 8.
As for Our Blooming Youth being a fusion, so was Under The Queen's Umbrella. In fact OBY treated the era with such a conservative outlook that UTQU looks like a modern treatise in front of it. In fact UTQU was based on a premise that would not even happen in Joseon. Don't get me wrong, I would not change a thing about UTQU, it's an absolute classic in terms of execution, but blowing OBY away as a lightweight project just because it's a fusion is not fair. It deals with an underlying theme that makes it relevant even today. OBY does not have the perfect execution of UTQU, but it's a well made series with some brilliant performances, and not just PHS.
You could say his Doctor Slump is somewhat similar to SWDBS, but if you have watched both, you will know it's not completely accurate either. His approach to his character is very different in both.

4

It is enough. I don't think we need to prolonged this argument about his selections of dramas, though I might watch Suits and Happiness.
