[Drama Chat] Your favorite K-drama filming location

Dramaland is small, which is why our favorite chaebols all seem to live in the same glass house, eat at the same restaurant with the hanging garden wall, and prefer walking dates along Cheonggyecheon.

Sometimes, spotting these iconic filming locations can be just as exhilarating as when an a-list actor or actress makes a surprise cameo. Over the years, I’ve collected a few favorite spots — like Sunshine Studio, which has recently made a couple of appearances in Flex x Cop and Wedding Impossible — and they became must-sees for me when I vacationed in South Korea last fall. The odds of meeting our favorite K-drama stars is unlikely, but making a pilgrimage to South Korea to walk in their footsteps is totally within the realm of possibility!

What are your favorite K-drama filming locations that you’ve added to your personal bucket list?

My favorite K-drama location was my country I lived, the Philippines. I remembered and knew the two most recent Kdramas that filmed here: Casino/Big Bet and A Killer Paradox.

Keeping it a bit closer to home, we visited Quebec after watching Goblin. Staying in Hotel Frontenac was a treat! I made a map of the show locations and we walked everywhere. At the "red door" we met some Korean tourists on the same journey!

Came here to say this. I travel to Quebec City every year and recognized all the locations immediately when I watched Goblin. It really is a beautiful city especially in winter time.

I would love to see Jeju... the coastal roads, the rocky promontories, the narrow little side streets with stone walls around the homes. I'm enchanted every time it pops up in a k-drama and it was no doubt one of the major reasons I stuck with Welcome to Samdal-ri recently.

Jeju is so beautiful! I never get tired of seeing the island in dramas. Its one of the reasons I have watched many mediocre dramas 😅

Yes, it doesn’t seem that I have watched a drama set there that is any good, even though I always enjoy the scenery. Forecasting Love and weather, welcome to sandal-ri and an early disappointment when I was newish to kdramas—Warm and Cozy. Huge waste of Kang So-ra and Yoo Yeonseok. Does anyone have one they do like?

Jeju is indeed lovely - and the folk there very friendly.

We made it about halfway up Hallasan (if you want to go to the summit, you need to book a guided trip in advance).
A seventy year old ajumma who overtook us on the way up stopped to give us tangerines...

I like Cheonggyecheon Stream! It captures the urban landscape/mood of Seoul at the end of day very well and it’s nice to see it in dramas where the leads go there to sit down and talk (Do you like Brahms) or they sit down to have a take out meal. Sometimes they just walk along (like Heartbeat) the stream.
It’s one of those places I can see myself taking a long walk later in the day.

On this subject, if folks don't know of the website "Korean Dramaland," it's definitely worth a peek: https://koreandramaland.com/

It's a site that catalogues the filming locations around the world for K-dramas (as well as some movies and music videos).

What's great about it is that if you recognize a place, and can't quite locate it, you can browse this site and have a good chance of finding out not only where it is, but the other dramas in which the location was used.

It's one of the reasons I like KDramas so much. They film outdoors and search for beautiful places in the whole Korea. That makes a change from the fake outdoors scenery that we can see in US shows.

When I was at Quebec, it wanted to sleep in Frontenac Hotel because of Goblin, but I'm not fan enough to search every place to visit them.

I didn't visit the places of CLOY in Switzerland when I live there...

I like to visit Korea by watching dramas : flowers fieds, cherry trees, beaches, temples, palaces, library, small coffee shops, etc. It's fun to see places I went in the dramas.

My favorite K-drama house: Han Jun-oh's (Kim Young-dae) house with the lighted stone walkway from Moon in the Day (I watched this show for his gorgeous house.)

My favorite K-drama library: Starfield Library from Record of Youth

One favorite K-drama filming location: Dongdaemun Design Plaza from Vincenzo of their kiss

One of the most iconic locations is The Tree of Love in Buyeo-gun (Chungcheongnam-do).

It is a 400 years old tree which has appeared in lots of sageuks (Iljimae, Alchemy of Souls, My Dearest, Captivating the King...) and other dramas too.
There must be great views from there.

There's this long wall like a street that stretches over a good distance.

Romances have been initiated, heartbreaks and break ups have been dished, tough conversations had, confessions heard - all along this walked path.

Locations that intrigue me more are the building locations used in dramas. I light up when I recognize a house in a previous drama I've seen - the most recent being Mine and Adams.
An architectural feature I'd like to see again is Yeom Hae-sang (Oh Jung-se) in Revenant. His apartment is exquisite to taste.

I'm tempted to say Quizno's, but for a more iconic location I was entranced with that grand library in Queen In-hyun's Man (is is the Seoul Metropolitan Library?). The only kdrama site I know I've visited is Incheon airport. That was amazing, it ruined all other aiports for me.

My favorite filming location is just near or on a beach.
It's my dream to live near a beach, so I like at least seeing it on tv.

Many of the dramas I've watched have at least one scene of main characters visiting a beach. I get disappointed when there isn't one.
So if a drama is located somewhere like Jeju Island, it makes me a lot more interested in watching it.

My top 3 faves:
1. Under the Queen's Umbrella - the tiny hanok with a gorgeous view where Cheong-ha told the Crown Prince that she liked him (https://youtu.be/UBqmgbT_MKI?si=VKnNjGP99lGRIdcw 4:44 mark). Does anyone know where it is?

2. Search: WWW featured the strikingly colorful cafe, The Dirty Trunk (https://koreandramaland.com/listings/dirty-trunk-paju/).

3. The Garden of the Morning Calm - featured in several dramas. It's so much prettier in real life (been there twice, and would love to visit again!)

I'm a floral girlie sucker so I simply adore any locations in dramas that display an array of flowers as a backdrop for love confessions between leads.

Not to forget, I love Jeju Island as well. Something about that place is just so calming and i LOVE when community/tight-knit characters in dramas are filmed there. Its just SO fitting & romantic!

The legendary Cliff of Non-Doom who graced nearly all prominent sageuks and plenty of modern action shows with its magical presence))) Idk where it is, but it's so unforgettable!

For cdramas - the new big player in town that's originally giant stariwell Hengyang sect from TTEOTM (which allegedly cost the production 1/4 of its giant budget to build it from the scratch) and since then was in all prominent costume dramas possible. I've seen it in like 7 already - TTEOTM, MLC, MJTY, AJTL and some others I've long forgot titles... Pretty sure it's gonna be in SHUI LONG YIN as well. Always feel very sentimental when it pops up in another show))) Reddit feat Google translate specifies that it's called 九泷潭影视基地 (Jiulongtan film and television set) located in Jinhua, Zhejiang. They also let tourists in for cash, so if you wanna kill your legs and soul a little feel particularly cdramatic...

There are some places I have seen in multiple dramas such that these places have almost become like actors making cameos when they appear -making me say—“Hello!! There you are again.”
The chaebol family house—
especially the outside gate and the courtyard. Appeared in Fated to Love You. The Real Has Come, See You in Ny 19th Life.
The Old Wall and Long Walkway—Appeared in Call it Love and The Interest of Love.

What a fascinating chat! Omg!

I’d love to visit 2 locations if possible in Korea:

The “white house” and the groundskeep of Secret Garden and Jirisan (drama was awful but the location nothing but!) I’d love to hike Jirisan to soak up gorgeous (just so-so gorgeous!) nature. And I would love to take a picture of myself as a “leather-clad-fingerless-gloved bad lady by the pond against the beautiful white house where many things were thrown in such as vacuums and motorcycle keys.”

Ok one more. Yeah, it’s such a touristy thing but I’d love to wear hanbok and promenade in one of the traditional villages and palaces and cutest bridges over the picturesque ponds, where many sageuks have been filmed.

Well, ok one more. Jeju-do but that’s just like such a no-brained.

Fine, one more. The actual coffee shop of Coffee Prince, a drama that made me fall in love with a k-drama.

For me I like exterior shots of Soul. All of a sudden a street I saw in a drama 10 years ago is nicely painted and the buildings on the left and right are different, but then the frame widens and you can tell it's Geum Soon's house when she lived with her in laws. Or it's the gate to Hye Sun's oktap from I Hear your voice, or it's Woo Young Woo walking down the street that Park Si Eun as the younger version of Shin Hye Sun's character from 30 but 17 gets splashed on. Is it the Mandoo chib from lovely Horribly or is it the guksoo chib from counter. . .

I really like settings which show the older, poorer parts of Seoul, that haven't been pulled down and redeveloped -- narrow windy streets, steep stairways, electricity wires coming down in great bunches from the power lines, ramshackle apartment buildings. I like the interiors of poorer people's homes too -- the clutter of belongings, the cheap furniture and plastic boxes full of stuff piled on top of each other. Just seems really real to me.
