Premiere Watch: The Impossible Heir

Time slot: Wednesdays
Broadcaster: Disney+
Genre: Revenge, drama, thriller
Episode count: 12

Reasons to watch: They had me at “Lee Jae-wook,” but then they went and added Lee Jun-young to the mix, and then promised a complicated story of chaebol throne usurpation, revenge, antagonism, loyalty, and betrayal. To make matters even more juicy, there’s also a lucky lady (Hong Su-ju) sandwiched into our boys’ plans. While the cast and premise and PD are all promising, it’s the chaebol household where I’m crossing my fingers that there will be adequate character development and storytelling. We’ve had many a flat villain in dramaland this year (and it’s only February) — still, I think we’ll have fun here either way.

TL;DR: Lee Jae-wook and Lee Jun-young team up to usurp a chaebol throne

‘ We’ve had many a flat villain in dramaland this year (and it’s only February) — still, I think we’ll have fun here either way’👈🏾 I am here for the fun and the good guys outsmarting the greedy and corrupt so if it goes too heavy in other areas I won’t make it through the four episode test but hopefully it’s good enough to stay for weecaps.

I take @missvictrix 's joke about "flat villains", but we've also had a number of exceptional villains recently who have utterly stolen the show. Just to name two: Byeon Woo-seok as Ryu Shi-oh in SWKNS and, of course, Oh Min-Seok as Noh Yul-seong in Queen of Divorce. There's even been a heartscene-stealer of an emotional bully (even though not the actual villain) in Like Flowers in Sand...Lee Jae-joon playing Kwak Jin-su.

Oh, yes! And mirror, mirror, on the wall, who’s been my favorite villain of them all: Song Ha-yoon as Jung Soo-min in Marry My Husband.

Oooh, yes, and Lady Park in The Matchmakers!!

Definitely! In a crowd of bland villains, we have some serious contenders. Let’s have a best villain award this year.

Is it me or is anyone else thinking they will pin ALL the murders on Yulseong’s mum so he is not seen as such a baddie after all?

I could totally see why you'd imagine this, Reply! I seriously doubt it, myself. And even if she was really the one planning the murders, he'd be such a spineless murdering-momma's-boy for going along with it, that he'd still be pretty irredeemable.

1

I don’t think he was in the loop with what his mum was up to and would explain his lack of insight (SHAME/BARE FACED CHEEK/DISRESPECT) re why his presence was not needed at the funeral and anniversary. I was outraged on her behalf on both occasions.

@eazal I can’t remember if its already on the list but there is a request for best villain award from @indyfan

Good thinking Mother Bean. By the time the RoundUp rolls around, we might have forgotten (if the category isn’t already there).

I think we got it, but I just note it down. I always check the lists of previous years. But thanks!!

In fact I think it's this year the villains are a bit more colourful than other times. They are rolling in grays with Oh Min-Seok leading the way. Song Ha-yoon is also a big part of why MMH is a delicious feast. Even Captivating the King has Lady Dong. And Matchmakers has one of the best villains ever! And of course, don't forget the snake in Doctor Slump.

Yu Oh-seong in Uncontrollably Fond is one of memorable "villain" to me.

I'm excited for this. I'm in the mood for something dramatic and revenge-y. Though the one-eps-a-week format worries me a bit.

Two episodes just dropped for me on Disney, which has been their MO at least in my region. Tho I won’t be able to get to them till later I’m grateful it’s a midweek drop.

There are two many Chaebol dramas in drama land at the moment and none of them have interesting power struggles or dynamics.

We always have power-tripping, loud, and violent chaebol hairs vying for the top position. Inflexible and most of time evil and self serving patriarch , cut-throat matriarch, and convoluted family tree.
Most of them are one note and extremely tedious. I bit tired of these.

Unless it has one exceptional element, I will not tune in.

Seems like none of them taking notes from Succession; probably the best non-chaebol shows about chaebols. I mean, so much fun when things are done right.

Succession was a rarity though as there have been so many bland and boring shows about rich people. Having the vicious Murdochs as an inspiration elevated it above the usual drivel.

I'm also burnt out on chaebol revenge stories. I do love LJW (and am happy that he's secure enough in his personal life to go public with his relationship--I wish them well) but in general, media seems saturated with stories of rich people vying for power and control with other rich people. As you said, there needs to be an exceptional or unexpected element here to draw me in.

It seems as though they were papped by that awful Korean tabloidesque site so decided to admit that “they are getting to know each other”. That aspect of being a celeb must be horrendous even if they get wealth, recognition and career satisfaction.

I'm sure it's very hard, especially if you're a private or shy person truly just getting to know someone. At the same time, although I have no real data to support this, I feel like when celebrities admit that they're dating someone (especially if it's another celebrity), even if they were forced to do so by an aggressive media system, it can take some of the pressure off that comes with trying to hide and deny, and can then allow the couple to date in a more open, healthy, semi-normal way. I hope that's the case for these two.

And I do hope this show does well, too. Besides LJW, it has Jun, who is also very talented. I'm very open to the story surprising me and breaking down my dislike of chaebol schemes!

I completely agree with you.

Of course, a stress on the rich and powerful, always been one of the major strains of Kdramas, whether you are talking about chaebol rom-coms or court politics (in other words, all) sageuks.

And its not just Koreans--all nations prefer watching rich people's fights and traumas, especially when there is a huge gap between rich and poor, as there is today around the world.
Cynically, (not that I am ever guilty of this mindset) you could say that it re-enforces the status quo, because us plebes can laugh and/or vent our disgust with rich folks behavior, while also being sympathetically appreciative of the virtuous bastard half-brother who is fighting for his share of the inheritance while trying to overcome the trauma of his mother's death in a white truck accident.

Your comment reminded me of the scene from Reborn Rich where they're talking about why Titanic is bound to be a hit - "it's about the rich losing out...people have no choice but to flock to the cinemas...because it'll never happen in reality!"

1st episode was mediocre. Even the acting wasn't exceptional. FL was bland. I am not tuning in until Ep.6 recap and verdict that it got better.

Have seen only the first episode, but I really wish the show hadn’t gone the triangle route. More leads is not always better.

Finally, I have a February drama to watch! I'm in the mood for corporate battles, bromance and corporate politics. Abstaining from all romcoms except for Queen of Tears.

His stylist though...were they trying to blend in with the Disney blue wall (and the blue carpet) there??? 😆
