Kim Soo-hyun and Kim Ji-won lead tvN rom-com Queen of Tears

After being in production for what seems like forever, the promos have taken off at last for tvN’s upcoming Queen of Tears with stills from the rom-com’s first script reading, led by Kim Soo-hyun (One Ordinary Day) and Kim Ji-won (My Liberation Notes).

As the son of the village chief from the quaint Yongdu-ri, Baek Hyun-woo (Kim Soo-hyun) is our story’s Cinderella who has been married to his queen charming – Hong Hae-in (Kim Ji-won) – for three years and counting. To be fair, it’s been a while since Hyun-woo has been city-fied, having gone to a fancy law school and now working as the legal team lead at the Queens department store, where Hae-in is the absolute ruler CEO. But marriage, of course, is not a fairy tale happily-ever-after, and we follow our leads as they navigate new highs and lows.

With an impressively substantial cast lineup, we’ll also be exploring the family and chaebol business dynamics with Park Sung-hoon (The Kidnapping Day) playing the well-known investor Yoon Eun-sung. In the role of Hae-in’s younger brother, Kwak Dong-yeon (Gaus Electronics) is Hong Soo-chul and is lovingly married to Chun Da-hye – played by Lee Joo-bin (Love to Hate You).

At the head of the Queens Group, we have grandpa and chairman Kim Gab-soo (Today’s Webtoon), who lives with his girlfriend Lee Mi-sook (Perfect Marriage Revenge). Hae-in and Soo-chul’s parents are Jung Jin-young (LTNS) and Na Young-hee (Queen of Divorce), while Kim Jung-nan (Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938) plays their paternal aunt.

Down in Yongdu-ri, Hyun-woo’s dad Jeon Bae-soo (Daily Dose of Sunshine) looks after the village while his mom Hwang Young-hee (Daily Dose of Sunshine) runs a local supermarket. They live together with Hyun-woo’s older siblings, hyung Kim Do-hyun (Gyeongseong Creature) and noona Jang Yoon-ju (Money Heist Korea – Joint Economic Area).

Co-directed by PD Jang Young-woo (Bulgasal – Immortal Souls) and PD Kim Hee-won (Soundtrack #2, Little Women), with scripts penned by Park Ji-eun (Crash Landing on You), tvN’s Queen of Tears is slated to premiere in March.

I love the normalcy of wearing pastel covered men’s suits by KD actors. That mint green colour is quite nice!

The casting director understands the assignment.

While I was nodding affirmatively at the choice of actors, I had to pause and laugh at this point. Even Grandpa has a girlfriend.
This is the second time I'm seeing Jung Jin-young play son to a father. The first was May It Please the Court.

Kim Gab Soo + Lee Mi Sook! I hope they have a lot to do here as they could be their own highly entertaining show!

I'm curious about having a story about a young married couple. Either Kdramas treated this theme as a comedy with couple being mean with each other for humor, with the bathroom scene to show they live together for a while, etc. either one of them is chaeting...

So I hope we will get something else for once!

Yeah, that title certainly sounds like a romcom... Not that I'm gonna check it out - this writer again? as if! - but the "funny start, unfunny ending" vibes never been stronger. Good luck, yall, don't say you haven't been warned!

I love veteran actors; Kim Gab-soo and Jung Jin-young are the biggest draw for me.

I'd tune in just for KDY, but given the writer's - and his own in secondary roles - track records, I'm legit scared to do so.

This is my *THE* drama of the year. The PD is outstanding and PJE is my favourite rom-com writer without a doubt. Plus it’s being capped off my KSH’s comeback. My expectations are ridiculously high.

I’m also really excited to see a reverse Cinderella in the middle of their Happily ever after. We don’t get that very often and there’s just a different dynamic to a married couple. Bring on the laughs and the angst. I’m so here for it.

Right? I mean I was pumped when IU was initially in talks and it sort of cooled slightly when KJW took over. Mostly because I didn’t know how they’d look together. But now I’m so stoked!

This is a legit romcom, right? Not chaebol succession melodrama? Wikipedia still listed it as *melodrama* but MDL listed it as *comedy/romance*, but Park Ji-Eun writer-nim IS the queen of great romcoms so I believe in her.

I LOVE PD Kim Hee-Won's works. Expect this to be artistically shot, with beautifully crafted production design and breathtaking shots. Like everyone said; expectation is super high!

Kwak Dong-yeon MARRIED??!? Oh, I will be there no matter what. All I ask is for him and Park Sung-hoon to not be evil or die tragically.

I can almost live with evil because at least it’s a challenge (I still sometimes see Lee Jae-kyung in SSR after all these years because of how well he played that role). But CLOY’s tragic (read: completely unnecessary) second lead death was just ughhhhh. I still hate that part of that drama.

Here's hoping he's not an antagonist in this one! (also because he's the FL's brother and him being the antagonist would mean petty cooprate takeover squabbles which is not what I want from this show)

Exactly. I'd rather we skip the usual chaebol family infighting here and focus more on interpersonal relationships without weird capitalist politics butting in.
