Premiere Watch: Knight Flower

Time slot: Friday-Saturday
Broadcaster: MBC
Genre: Comedy, sageuk, action
Episode count: 12

Reasons to watch: Watch out folks, there’s another widow from Joseon with a mind of her own on the loose! Our seamstress and matchmaker got happy endings, and now it’s time for Honey Lee to have her try. The only catch? Her secret identity is a little more risky: masked fighter for the people! When a young officer (Lee Jong-won) gets involved with uncovering her identity, does she have a new foe or a new friend? (Or a new love interest??) With some daring casting that I can’t wait to see unfold, and one of the PDs from a personal favorite drama — the zippy Hyena — we might just have a fun show on our hands.

TL;DR: Honey Lee is demure widow by day, masked fighter by night

Legal streaming site for this Kdrama: Viki

I loved this show... but I knew that it that was Honey Lee's Kdrama before Aema (Netflix).

Also available on Kocowa (subs are much earlier than Viki) in the Americas.

You lucky things but I’m exercising patience with Viki’s late releases as the subbers are volunteers and I’m grateful to them. I hope they are rewarded by Viki in other ways as otherwise Viki is profiting from their labour (of love, perhaps?)

I subscribe to both - and have recently discovered that Kocowa is better at "transcribing' (perhaps interpreting is a better term) the subs in a way that makes sense to American viewers. I began to compare some crucial scenes for Live Your Own Life and discovered that although Viki might be a more technically "accurate" translation, Kocowa made far more sense in several scenes - probably because KBS is part-owner of Kocowa and presumably KNOW what is intended in a scene.

So, in the end, I usually re-watch my favorite scenes in both versions. 😊

That’s interesting. I don’t have access to Kocowa so Viki is it for me. I try to use my basic knowledge of Korean to figure things out if something seems off in the subs but there are many words, expressions and grammatical concepts that I’m yet to learn so it’s not easy.

Oh! Is it a new trend for actors to grow their hair for sageuks so it looks more natural pulled into a topknot? I would be very much in favor. I got so used to Rowoon’s in The Matchmakers that I notice it all the time now when it’s too short (or worse - sort of shaggy but not long enough to tuck up).

Please may it become a trend, I would LOVE that so much.

Kwak Dong Yong did it in Moonlight Drawn by Clouds- the longest I've seen I think. Also Jang Dong Yoon in The Tale of Nokdu and Lee Jae Kyun in Secret Royal Inspector and Joy and Song of the Bandits (he cut his hair now I'm so sad).

This is an additional point in The Matchmakers favour for me hahaha, but I still have to wait several more months before I can tolerate Rowoon's face again before thinking about trying to watch.

I can't help it, Emma. His face and his acting annoys me lmao.

I understand that my reaction to certain physiognomies and acting is difficult to understand and easy to make personal.

But how many times must I say, it's not got anything to do with his actual moral character, (which I wouldn't know from Adam as I refuse to participate in Paras0cialism), or value as a person overall, which has nothing to do with whether I like him or not.

So, equating it with these examples is doing me a disservice, I fear, and severely misunderstanding why I dislike some actors like this.

This is why I dislike Paras0cialism so much, because not only is it on the “positive” end of the spectrum placing your own worth in the validation of people you can NEVER truly know, on the “negative” end of the spectrum it derives moral validation by the scale of virtuousness of other people, who we will also NEVER truly know.

This is NOT what me wanting to punch him in the face is about!!! Lmafo. Truly, it’s not.

I can dislike somebody's acting and visual aesthetics, without it having any bearing on their (or my, for that matter) actual person. Random celebrities can just annoy me for no reason. I am allowed to not like him in this way!

Let us not also put moral value on Preferences where we don't need to.

Not a new trend, but I love it! The early 2000s was sageuk heavy so there were a lot of manes of glory to admire.

I don't know if it is a new trend, but I want it to be. I still reminisce about Kwak Dong-yeon's Moonlight Drawn by Clouds mane of glory at least three times a day.

Is there something called - Too Much Fun!! I'm little nervous now. 😅 Can they maintain this "light" touch throughout the drama.

I only got through one episode of "One the Woman," so I've never actually seen much of Honey Lee, but since many seem to love her, I'm excited to check this out.

Actually, I like her, but didn’t enjoy One the Woman very much. She won my heart in Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People. If you like sageuks, it’s a masterpiece and she was a scene stealer. Highly recommend it.

Well, given the brutal treatment that many of them received in RL for centuries, I want even more good KDs to feature them. I’ve realised I really like good sageuks and can cope with the annoying gats (@elinor - I know you can’t stand them) provided it is a superior drama.

I'm torn. I've never seen Honey Lee (except for her tiny cameo in Be Melodramatic and I'm always up for a spot of masked fempower derring-do (which should be an entire genre) and some long hair on men. On the other hand, I'm completely gat-ted out right now. I'll keep an eye on this and see if beanies suck me in like they did for the last two sageuks I watched. Even if not, I sincerely hope it's awesome for all y'all's sake.

I would love to see cameos of Jung Il-woo and Lee Joon-hyuk (1984) running down a dark alley ‘bossaming’, while Honey Lee charges past on her way to saving the day for some poor soul, passing like ships in the night.

That is not the only thing similar with The Matchmakers. Honey Lee's character is not just any widow, but the widow daughter-in-law of the Left State Councilor. A very specific breed.

Just finished Episode 1 (Kocowa).

Very fun intro (Healer and Stealer vibes). Entire episode was a great deal of fun and with MDl character list by my side, I could figure out who belongs to which family fairly easily.

I know nothing about the two leads, but Jo Jae Yoon (Alchemy of Souls) and Kim Mi Kyung (my intro to her: Master's Sun, Healer and her Private Life) are always so professional and fun to watch.

But. . . the significant age difference between the leads is very obvious and distracting. Noona romances that are 10+ years apart do not appeal to this viewer. I will continue to watch - and hope it continues to be light-hearted, Healer/Stealer fun martial arts, well-done camera work/direction and doesn't descend into cliche Joseon era violence and murder mystery.

The director of this drama was also the director of "Hyena" and there was also an age difference between the leads, so the choice of him seems not accidental.
However, in terms of experience in male-female relationships, the situation is different for leads than in "Hyena". Here, both FL and ML may be at the same level, i.e. zero emotional and sexual experience. Neither of them has probably ever been in love before. He is probably too good and decent to use the services of courtesans, so there was probably no one in his life, and she is a widow who was never a real wife.

Good points about the probable romantic experience of our leads. The cliffhanger ending to episode 2 may be the start of their romantic education 101 lol.
I enjoyed the first two episodes.

If I hadn't watched The Matchmakers , Knight flower would have been interesting and refreshing, but unfortunately everything feels repetitive and lacks the charm and fun of the former. Given the fact that "The Matchmakers" did not have high ratings/online buzz, I can only deduce that not many in SK watched it and thus this drama can seem novel and get high ratings solely due to the FL's star power.

Was anyone reminded of Samsoon's "erotic" novels in The Matchmakers? The one where the Joseon officer is chasing a masked female ninja?

It's no MM in terms of quality, and despite tremendous overlap, this one is still fast-paced fun, and Honey Lee is charming. #TeamNoonaRomance. 😂

I know, right? If she couldn't stop herself from turning 40, she should retire than subject us to her middle-age voice.

Why stop there? It's a shame that Virtuous Woman Memorial Gate doesn't still exist. It could encourage more elderly, useless women over 40 to do the right thing. 🙄

Thanks for your much needed dry humour. This site can be so horrifying. How dare these 40+ women exist? Do they actually think they matter? That they are entitled to a measure of happiness, love and companionship? How dare they come near beautiful young men? Unforgivable. Even for beautiful drama actors. Every other woman with such delusions should be burnt at the stake.

But such a gate does exist! And holds the name of all the women who commit career suicide in their 40s.

Lee Ha Nee is always such a delight, I love how charismatic she is in everything I've watched of hers and this one is no different. Her face is a kaleidoscope of emotions and her comedy is top notch but she manages sadness too, what a woman. Haven't seen Jong Won in anything before, but he's cute and so far, the character's interesting.

I can't say I'll enjoy all the complaining about her age like it happens for every single drama where the female lead is older than the male lead, no matter what the writing or characters are actually like, but the first episode was very entertaining and I'm looking forward to the rest.

I haven't watched the second episode yet, I'm excited to hear it was as fun as the first one!

I hope the people who can't tolerate older women, even stunning older women dripping with charisma, existing in kdrama space with younger males decide to give the show a pass rather than subject us to further misogynistic opinions.
