Premiere Watch: Flex x Cop

Time slot: Friday-Saturday
Broadcaster: SBS
Genre: Action, comedy, mystery, romance
Episode count: 16
Global streamer: Disney+

Reasons to watch: After spending last year being sad in swimming pools, Ahn Bo-hyun is back as our man-child hero who finds himself working on a police squad — decidedly different from the usual life of a third gen chaebol heir. This drama’s concept is built on how well Ahn Bo-hyun can ham it up in this role, and I’m looking forward to seeing what he brings to the table. Also starring is Park Ji-hyun, who is on a quick career climb after Reborn Rich. It also behooves me to say that the English rendering of the title the production company has landed on is an unfortunate one, taking the literal Chaebol x Detective, and trying to make it more… universally flashy?

TL;DR: Ahn Bo-hyun is our chaebol detective who flexes his wealth and charisma for good

I AM SO EXCITED. I adore spoiled, dumb, yet well-meaning chaebol romance leads (see: Louis, Yu-hyeon, etc), especially when they're paired with female leads who have opposite personalities.

Are you sure this one is well-meaning though? He is going to become a cop so…

Quick question what does it say the Hulu rating is going to be (does it say?) I'm wondering if that's why I'm not seeing it

@bbstl ...it's on Hulu in the US, so you may not have to boo (although the long booooo was hilarious).

It might be on Disney+ in Canada. That's often a distinction made between these two North American markets.

Hmm I'm holding out hope it will appear eventually then - I have access to Disney+ through a family member for a bit, and they have a beta "hulu" section now because Disney owns the world now. I found quite a few favorites but no FlexxCop yet

@attiton hey, thanks for the help! The funny part is that my cable company just “gave” us Disney+ (w commercials) as part of the streaming package. Some of the announcements say it includes Hulu and some don’t and I haven’t found one human or AI who can answer which is true. So my long term frustration w Disney+ manages to be both abated and enhanced at the same time 🤦🏼‍♀️ a girl can’t win. I will continue to work on it!

4

@attiton and @bbstl it also just popped up on the Hulu "beta" tab inside Disney+, so I'm celebrating!

Way to cheer me up! Thanks for that good news!

Well, that was a whole lot of over the top. It was also pretty much what the promos promised. So bonus points for that. I almost dropped it during the opening scene proper (not the intriguing prologue). But by the end of the episode, I was definitely game to watch at least the next one. YMMV.

Yes, Ep 1 was bonkers. It reminded me of Lee Dong Wook's "Bad and Crazy" which I dropped after Ep 1 and I am doing the same here.

Sigh, I kept searching for Chabeol x Cop and couldn't find it. All okay now. I've put it on the watchlist.

I liked the first episode. It goes up and down, and to be honest Ahn Bo-hyun's comedy chops are not terrific but not bad either, and some parts of it made me laugh. I have always found him a bit stiff, as if he is always aware the camera is running in front of his face, even though he has a mobile face (he was great in Itawon class). But I like the look of the series. Let's see.

I just watched the first episode on Disney+. I think it could be a bit more comedic..... It felt too serious at this point, some missed opportunity for some jokes

- Ahn Bo-Hyun is back in his comfort zone, and we can see him playing a variation of his trademark characters in years to come (and I still love to watch it)
- You can already predict who the big bad are. The plot is not hard to predict, but I still find it engaging.
- Production design and art direction are surprisingly amazing. You see, SBS is known to be very good with their rich guys' drama stuff - the decor, the set, and the costumes are all top-notch.
