IU and Park Bo-gum join hands in When Life Gives You Tangerines

IU, Park Bo-gum

After teasing this pairing over a year ago, the first reading stills for When Life Gives You Tangerines (working title) have dropped. Based off a phrase in the Jeju dialect, the show’s Korean title translates to “you have done well,” which was the drama’s previous English translation. Starring IU (Hotel Del Luna) and Park Bo-gum (Record of Youth), this upcoming drama takes place on Jeju Island and follows the adventures of two lovers as they navigate the ups and downs of life through its varied seasons.

IU plays Jeju born and raised Ae-soon. A smart and rebellious person, Ae-soon fights against the fate laid out for her and wants more in life than what others expect. At her side is the iron-willed Gwan-shik, played by Park Bo-gum. The brawns to her brains, Gwan-shik acts before thinking, and from a young age, he has only loved Ae-soon to the point where his sincerity has become his weapon.

While IU and Park Bo-gum will portray the main couple in their youth sometime in the 1950s, the show will also depict Ae-soon and Gwan-shik later in life. Moon Sori (Race) and Park Hae-joon (Arthdal Chronicles) have been cast as their older versions, and with all these amazing actors on screen, I’m sure both portrayals will be wonderful to watch.

Besides the cast, the people behind the cameras are also filled with recognizable and amazing talents. PD Kim Won-seok (Arthdal Chronicles) will be directing, making this his second time working with IU after My Ajusshi and his fourth project with Park Hae-joon. As for the script, the writer of When the Camellia Blooms and Fight My Way Im Sang-chun has returned after five years (time sure flies by quickly). No official date has been released yet, though we do know the show has been picked up by Netflix and will most likely air sometime this year.

It's kinda weird but I was almost more excited by the pair Moon Sori and Park Hae-Joon (I hope he will be able to keep his hair in this one!) than IU and Park Bo-Gum.

I never got the hype about Moon Sori. She was very underwhelming in Agency...

I didn't watch Agency. But I really loved her in On the Verge of Insanity, she started as a grey character but had a good evolution.

But overall, she's a good actress.

Moon So-ri has her own unique way of acting which I find hard to describe - perhaps a bit on the clinical side than melodramatic. Building her resume from movies (rather than dramas) could be a factor. Her performance in On the Verge of Insanity is so wonderful that we can’t hate her or love her without reservation.

I also love her in Life as the (oncology or OG?) professor that trumps others to become the hospital director.

Yes, she didn't leave any impression on me in Life either. I guess I haven't clicked with her yet...

I saw the news on this and was wondering the nature of the flash forwards. Looks like most of the story will be spent when they're young--I hope that doesn't mean they end up separated for years and years. What are the chances they flash forward to them being older and happy together? Lol

I saw this on Bogummy’s Instagram and then on NetflixKr so it’s coming. Please let it be soon and not 2025 which is still the timeframe on Netflix coming soon.

Well. I'm not a soothsayer but I see an uptick in tourism to Jeju Island soon from people like me who want to check out what all the fuss about. *scheming my travel bingo card for 2024* yeah-you-got-me*

With these two generations of actors, I am in for sure. Sounds like PBG is playing another Taek.

And the Jeju dramas continue…

I am sure I had this Park Bo-gum 1950’s Jeju Island drama on my list of period dramas but somehow it dropped off. Well it is back on now.

Ruminating. If we have two story lines going on here (and I am in the pro Moon Sori camp having loved her performance in VERGE) and one (the young adult story) is set in the 1950s then the older adult story would take place in the 1990s maybe? Certainly not at the present (as we know it). The oldsters would be ancient.
Being on Netflix there will be no availability angst.

I don’t know about you but I’m a bit tired of Jeju based stories. Can’t we have Pusan as a location for a while?

I only made it through 4 episodes before pulling the ripcord on SAMDAL-RI so I wasn’t around Jeju too long for that.
Of the few variety shows I have watched tvN’s COFFEE FRIENDS (2019) (10 eps) is my favorite and it took place on a tangerine farm on Jeju Island. It didn’t show much Jeju but Yoo Yoon-seok and friends were a delight running a cafe at the farm. Maybe one of the last shows I watched on the dark side. A huge reveal to me was how sweetly eccentric Yang Se-jong is in real life.
I don’t recall watching anything else set on Jeju Island.

What will you do when life gives to tangerines...most probably eat it. I am too lazy to do anything else. Same goes for the drama. I will most probably tune in.
