Welcome to Samdal-ri: Episodes 5-6
by quirkycase
Friendship takes center stage this week as our heroine finds herself in need of support and discovers some friends are forever. But she’s not the only one facing crises. Her sister is left reeling after an unexpected encounter, the littlest family member isn’t feeling at home in her new neighborhood, and someone in the family is hiding a secret.
EPISODES 5-6
This week we dig deeper into relationships both past and present. And, surprising to no one who’s ever seen a drama, we get the start of a love triangle. Sam-dal is quite the heartbreaker, it would seem. We already know Yong-pil has always been completely whipped for Sam-dal and takes care of her needs before his own. He’s the first to apologize, first to make up, first to approach – Yong-pil then and now always takes her side, doing whatever he can to make her happy. While it’s sweet, he should get to be taken care of too!
Yong-pil has to face that while he may know who Sam-dal is at her core and all her habits, he’s missed eight years of her life; there’s a lot about her experiences he doesn’t know. He and Sam-dal both spend a lot of time obsessing over their conversations and recent embarrassing revelations while assuring themselves that this is a totally normal thing to do and does not indicate feelings of any kind.
Then, there’s Sang-do who watches from the sidelines. Even though all the local young women swoon over him – he’s rich, pretty, and kind – he still only has eyes for Sam-dal. And now that she’s back, he’s stepping up and taking his shot for the first time. He brings her medicine, shows up with an umbrella when it rains, and takes her for a spin in his fancy car. This doesn’t go unnoticed by Yong-pil who looks quietly unsettled, especially because he knows Sang-do had feelings for Sam-dal back in the day.
But even Sang-do doesn’t look like he rates his chances high. Yong-pil and Sam-dal have always been inseparable and have so much history. Even after eight years apart, they’ve quickly fallen back into a comfortable rhythm. Plus, Yong-pil even calls her mom “eomma”! She essentially became his surrogate mom after his mom – her best friend – died.
However, things aren’t looking so great for this mom either. We secretly see her taking pain meds, suggesting she’s hiding some illness as drama moms are wont to do. Maybe that’s why she’s so determined to have her daughters pull themselves together. She makes them contribute like good Jeju citizens while they’re home, which is how Jin-dal ends up as a volunteer traffic director.
Jin-dal is not exactly an officer of the peace and ends up fighting with a rude driver and challenging him to a duel. As she’s chasing down the man’s car, she spots her ex-husband JEON DA-YOUNG (Yang Kyung-won) watching her in shock from his car. He’s there for the new theme park his company is building nearby. Da-young’s a rather ridiculous, hapless person who can’t even get through a company event without making a spectacle of himself. (I guess that’s why he fell for someone bossy and confident like Jin-dal.)
At this point, the family is basically single-handedly keeping the neighborhood gossip mill running. Small town gossip is the worst anyway, but the neighbors take it too far when their gossip involves a kid. Little Ha-yul overhears some elderly women talking about how pitiful her mom is and how her father wouldn’t have died if her grandmother had done some ritual they encouraged her to do. Ha-yul solidly but politely puts them in their place by saying her father’s death was no one’s fault. How sad would her grandmother be to hear them blaming her?
Ha-yul then does some brooding by the water, which is how she meets GONG JI-CHAN (Kim Min-chul) who is seemingly being set up to be Hae-dal’s love interest. He’s a little quirky and eager but appears nice – he’s friends with the local dolphins who he knows by name. Mature Ha-yul finds him a bit dim, but harmless.
But things get worse where the gossip is concerned. When a persistent reporter who used to badger Sam-dal shows up to cover the theme park, he hears locals gossiping about how Sam-dal has returned. This shows both the worst and best of the neighborhood because while the gossiping is horrible, the incident gives Sam-dal’s friends a chance to shine.
It’s hard to beat friends who have known you your entire life. While she was in Seoul, the boys all obsessively kept up with her career and were so proud of every achievement. Now, her besties close ranks and go to bat for her. Yong-pil and Sang-do run the reporter off when he corners Sam-dal in her house, and then Kyung-tae and Eun-woo break his camera and ruin his memory card. That lands them in the police station but no fear: Sang-do shows up to pay for damages in cash like a badass.
Sam-dal waits nervously outside until she hears Kyung-tae reaming the reporter out for daring to talk badly about her. Doesn’t he know how incredible she is? It’s sweet but his tirade just gives the reporter more fodder, so Sam-dal steps in to shut it down. She asks to file a complaint with the cop – also a childhood friend – since the reporter trespassed and even looked at her mail.
Just when one crisis is averted, another crops up. Sam-dal’s two loyal colleagues find video evidence that backstabbing assistant Eun-joo stole Sam-dal’s project presentation to use for the gig she swiped after causing Sam-dal’s downfall. Sam-dal finally goes to Seoul to confront her with Yong-pil and Sang-do in tow (they insist on tagging along).
Sam-dal busts into Eun-joo’s concept meeting with the magazine, and her spineless ex (an editor there) basically confirms that this was Sam-dal’s concept first. Eun-joo is as awful and remorseless as ever, still claiming she’s just as good as Sam-dal while not being good enough to use her own concept. Sam-dal just wants to know if she really drove Eun-joo to try to commit suicide – it’s been eating her up all this time. Eun-joo actually smiles when she tells her that it was all a ruse.
This is too much for Sam-dal who starts screaming and has to be pulled away by Yong-pil. After sobbing in Yong-pil’s arms for a while, Sam-dal picks herself up and marches back to Eun-joo. Just like she gave Eun-joo her ex, she’ll give her the concept too. (Her ex is aghast at that wording.) Go ahead and see how far she can go on other people’s work.
Despite her confidence in the room, Sam-dal feels lost. All her hard work and sleepless nights have amounted to this, making it all feel meaningless. Who is she if not a photographer? Yong-pil suggests they try to find Sam-dal the person rather than Eun-hye the photographer. It looks like Sam-dal is going to take that advice because after she gets home to Jeju, she boxes up her photography equipment.
With all those heightened emotions and closeness, both Sam-dal and Yong-pil are forced to face their lingering feelings. Not like it hasn’t been obvious enough for everyone to start to wonder. The neighborhood is so small Mom immediately realizes Yong-pil went to Seoul with Sam-dal, and she puts two and two together. While she asks Sam-dal if she still has feelings for Yong-pil, Sang-do asks Yong-pil the same. We’ll have to wait until next week to hear how they respond.
I’m glad that Sam-dal is facing her situation head-on now and trying to move forward. I would hope it’s only a matter of time before Eun-joo is found out for the lying snake she is, but the world isn’t fair, so who knows? Even if Sam-dal can’t go back to her old job as is, she probably could still be a photographer in some way, so I don’t know that she needs to fully give it up. Still, I think it’s a good idea for her to focus on other aspects of herself and what she wants – what better time to reassess and recalibrate? Maybe this time she can eat proper meals, sleep, keep in touch with her friends, and achieve her goals, whatever they may be.

I loved these two episodes!!
1. Uri Sam Dal... aigoo. She has such a big heart.
She knew she didn't mistreat Eun B on porpoise, but she was worried of having hurt her without knowing.
For her the only explanation for the whole situation was that she actually did something wrong. She couldn't imagine her hoobae would do something like that to her for no real reason.
Kinda weird she survived 18 years in the industry with that innocence, but wtv, poor Sam Dal. 🥺
I understand that she feels lost, betrayed and wronged right now.
Even if she fights back, it wouldn't be the same. She wouldn't feel comfortable working with the celebrities and editors that gave their back to her. She wouldn't feel good acting like "nothing happened".
I hope she has a good rest and enjoys having new experiences in Jeju. Maybe she can slowly find her love for photography again... Well, I wonder if her dream was being a photographer or just being successful. But I feel like photography is "the thing", if it isn't, then this is the perfect time to find something she truly loves.
2. The friendship. The scenes with all the friends were the best this week. Gyeong Tae apologizing to Sam Dal and telling her how much he missed her was so sweet. IS THIS THE SAME GUY THAT SAID WOMEN AND MEN CAN'T BE FRIENDS?? He's literally Sam Dal's #1 supporter. He's so proud of his friend and loves her so much, so wth was that "men and women can't be friends" bs? Pfff. 😆
And the scene at the police station was so beautiful. The guys defending Sam Dal and then Sam Dal defending her friends. 🥺
I love how supportive they all are. I love how they always have each other's backs.
I also loved the scene with Gyeong Tae's mom telling Sam Dal to stay home because of the reporter. It's nice to see how they all (the friends and their parents) are one big family that cares for each other.
3. The sisters.
Their stories seem interesting. I want more of them! Pleaseeeee. P.L.E.S.E.
4. The scene of the maknae's daughter saying she doesn't like the neighborhood broke my heart.
The three sisters did nothing wrong but they have to hide or go outside and hear all kind of nonsense. Even the little kid has to hear that.
It's really annoying how everyone seems to be stuck in the past. They keep talking about things that happened a million years ago and have no relevance to the present. All the people involved in the situation have moved on or they're trying to, but the rest of the neighborhood can't let it go.
And talking about people that live in the past... I can't stand Yong Pil.
5. I dislike Yong Pil, a lot.
6. What's with that love triangle?
7. They could've made Sang Do a really fun character with an interesting story, but nah, better make him just a guy with a loud car that's in love with his friend's ex that's also his friend. Oh yeah, he used to be poor. Let's repeat that a million times to make him sound interesting or...

Anyway, except for the main romance (and love triangle), I enjoyed everything in these two episodes. I can't wait for the healing to start.

I definitely want more of the sisters (the way Jin-dal's ex just seems clueless and not vicious; the way Hae-dal is being set up with dolphin hottie), but frankly, I also actually quite like the love triangle set up at this point. Poor boy makes good at home while everyone else gets the opportunity to go to Seoul--they all fail but him...and yet he doesn't get what he really wants which is, of course, Sam-dal.
As for Yong-pil...I bet when their past break up is revealed, his reticence/introversion/lack of action will at least have a motivation.
I dunno. This week, I was convinced just to go with the flow and not worry about it all too much. Each character is getting rounded out and that just takes a hot minute...fingers crossed it just gets better from here on out, but even if it doesn't, so what! 😜

I love, love, love the love triangle because I saw in the preview that it is the result of an ancient curse--finally a show this year that has one. From what I've seen, Sam-dal was crown princess of the kindom of Tamna, just before it was put under the control of the Joseon dynasty. In Tamna, a matriarchy, it was the women who had multiple husbands and male concubines. (The whole modern "gang," those lovable goofs, are shown to be reincarnations of Sam-dals concubines in earlier times). One day, Sam-dal favored Sam-do because he brought her a fast horse. In a fit of jealousy, Yong-pil attacked Sam-Do in Sam Dal's presence, and in the tussle they fell into the sea and sank slowly in the eternal depths. (a scene that will be flashed back over and over as the show goes on)
Ever since then, they've been doomed to keep recreating the love triangle, and will until the Tamna kingdom wins back its provincial independence. Will this iteration break the cycle?
Well--the ending could either be bittersweet, as the reincarnated princess and her male concubines decide they want to give up, be human, and not be demons or cupids, or forget theirs reincarnation, or shed the bloody hand, or no longer turn into dogs or whatever, and all move to Seoul and abandon Jesu--
OR the 38 year old boy toys will decide to reconcile, both marry Sam Dol, and live as 2 husbands and a wife, with the closing scene showing Korean officials declaring Jeju independent! Of course, I always root for the happy ending, and that's what I'm seeing for this one.

This was a good one, @hacja...right down to the typo that transformed Jeju in to Jesu. Seriously, it works for you, not against you, subtly emphasizing the loss of all hope here in our desolate, romance-less, capitalist hellscape.
Huis clos, for sure.

I find it extremely weird.
Two guys in love with their friend all their life? Sang Do doesn't get over her even when she starts dating his other friend and then breaks up with him? And Yong Pil... ugh, I can't even talk about that guy.
Anyway, they haven't seen her in almost a decade. So instead of romantic I find it kinda scary.
Sam Dal is having a life crisis and those two go around asking each other "do you still have feelings for Sam Dal?". LOL she has better things to worry about than her obsessed ex and obsessed friend.
And yeah, I liked Sang Do as the poor guy that succeeded, but the show isn't doing anything with that. They just keep repeating that he was poor and that's it. They're gonna make all his identity about being the second lead...

It is not really that naive to assume someone wouldn't claim you are the reason they attempted suicide. That is malicious in a whole another way. If Eun B had moved studios and stolen concepts, it would be naive if she thought that was betrayal, but claiming someone caused you to attempt suicide is a far far bridge.

Thank you @quirkycase for the recaps.
I watched only Ep.5 and decided to drop this show. There are only bits and pieces that are likeable about this show and even to get those tidbits we have to wait for a long time. For example, the emotional scene between Gyeong Tae and Sam Dal should have happened in Ep.3.
I also don't find the funny scenes to be laughable. Jin Dal going rogue against the car driver and chasing after him felt too long and boring.
Plus, I find the gossip ladies to be the worst. I don't find anything endearing about their personalities.
Yong Pil should just move on from Sam Dal because at this point he looks like a simp. He has no character outside of "Sam Dal".

By episode 6 it’s clear that Yong Pil will have no role to play but support her
An epilogue in Ep 6 shows him saying ‘my dream is mom and Sam dal’.
So yeah. That’s it about him I guess.

Thanks for the info. I have nothing against love stories and the leads being engrossed in each other's life, but here the OTP is unbalanced. So far, Sam Dal hasn't shown any interest in getting back with him and is dealing with career break and false accusations. I don't know if she is in a headspace to love again, even if she is on a path to self discovery and re-evaluating her choices.

Oh yeah. I would have much preferred if he had moved on and drifted apart. And after 8 years they connect again. That’s the thing about certain long term friendships. Sometimes you don’t see them for years and when you meet you pick up where you left off.
I think their dynamic has always been this way.

I don't think he was the whole reason for their break up; I think his family was likely overbearing and constantly belittling her while also demanding alot of her and he didn't stick up for her. I wonder what was the final straw for Jin Dal cause it's kinda hard to believe she would've submitted to him or the family in the first place.

I'm thinking Yong Pil's mom died during one of those dives or it's somehow related to it so Yong Pil's dad blames Sam Dal's mom and/or the whole family which may have led to the break up.
A part of me feels like this might be a reach but it came to mind: what if the dad sent Sam Dal that break up text and then he guilt tripped Yong Pil about having a relationship with Sam Dal? Or the guilt trip could've came first.
Yong Pil and his dad don't seem to have any weird or heavy vibes but dad *does* keep trying to throw away Yong Pil's ball of yarn despite Yong Pil clearly having an affection/attachment to it.

Six episodes is a long time to get just there...
Sam-Dal is not the cleverest one. The way she adressed to Eun-joo was too upfront for someone who was accused of bullying. But I liked the fact she just gave up her concept, she will always have her talent and Eun-joo her lies.
The sisters are just noisy for now... I wish they try to do something about their life and don't expect their mother to do everything for them. Ha-yul is not the best placed to call the stranger stupid when she doesn't know the difference between fish and mammal.
It's quite dangerous that the mother is still diving if she has heart issues... She should stop and just tell the truth.
Yong-Pil's mother death looks like A dark cloud above these 2 families.
For the couple, I don't like how Yong-Pil is already acting like they're a couple, because he knew her it gives him the rights to act for her. The couple looked unbalanced.

The breathtaking audacity of cheaters and betrayers in dramas never ceases to amaze me. He cheats and then has the nerve to get indignant about not knowing who some guy his EX girlfriend is hanging around. The former assistant has the nerve to steal Sam Dal's designs but then half asses it and tells others, when I guess that's not how it typically goes, they can figure out the details. BOTH felt somehow slighted that they don't matter to her or that she's not a broken shell because of their actions.
Considering I've just seen Brave Citizen, a part of me did imagine an alternate universe where Sam Dal did that hammer kick on them (I don't know if that's what the move is called; I just called it that cause it reminds me of bringing down a hammer).
I wasn't remotely surprised that the assistant faked the whole thing but I was kinda taken aback by her brazeness. Like there's ACTUAL evidence of her stealing that portfolio and numerous people KNOW that it was Sam Dal's work and yet she's like "we'll just say I came up with it first".
I almost don't know which is worse: her or all the bystanders who are allowing her to ruin Sam Dal's career. The ex boyfriend KNOWS the truth and doesn't even call her out on it. Why? Why is she so intimidating to him? Because she's the new girlfriend? Even so I still don't understand why he defers to her so much as if she controls his every move. Like I could totally see him being the type to put all the blame on others for his actions. He's such a weasel.
The way the editors and other folks turned on Sam Dal and then acted like she was some volatile woman just feels like a reminder of how people suck. I just dislike them all so much.
If the shows ends with Sam Dal forgiving them and working with them again, I think I'm gonna be so disappointed.

I haven't watched these set of episodes yet, can someone tell me if they're similar to the last 4 or are there more quiet, introspective moments?
I found the first 4 very loud and chaotic. The excessive drinking put me off immensely too. I didn't find any of the scenes endearing or the characters likeable. I am only considering continuing watching because I was very excited for the show before it started and don't want to give up before it reaches the good parts. However, getting through 3 and 4 felt like a chore to me. Hence looking for advice.

Having been the same boat, I felt I much liked the turn of events in Ep 6. Ep 5/6 has quieter moments and also some Friendship rebonding moments.
Drinking is toned down but still there. In fact Yong Pil even calls her out on the drinking.
I still don’t like the gossiping ladies. Don’t like the mom.
But I say, with some FF, watch until Ep 6 and decide to drop. The lead’s definitely have the awkward chemistry and we slowly see they break the awkwardness and have some moments.

6 episodes and I have a fundamental problem—I don’t like Sam Dal. I am sympathetic to her unjust downfall, and I want the assistant brought down, preferably by Sam Dal taking some action, which would be in keeping with what we been told is Sam Dal’s character (she’s the bold leader of the Power Rangers!), but if it is by the assistance own shortcomings as a photographer, whatevs. However, I still don’t know why I should like Sam Dal and why I should be rooting for Sam Dal and Yong Pil. Sam Dal is shown to be really hard working (but aren’t many around her too?) and charismatic as a leader of her hometown gang, but she is selfish and really self-centered. When showing how Yong Pil always took care of her as demonstrated by him tying her shoe laces, they show him in his mourning clothes tying her laces in the midst of his raw grief. Yes, she is crying, but HIS mother died. They aren’t little kids—they are both teenagers, when she should have been old enough to be sensitive to him in this obvious situation, but the show has him tending to her. After her return from Seoul and has cleared her head a little, her immediate response is to say, “Mom, I’m hungry.” If the show had given us a morsel of her sensitivity to others, it might have been sweet. But she just seems like she is a petulant teenager, always thinking about herself and her dreams, without awareness or concern about whether her dreams require the help or support of others.
As to Yong Pil, the writers are also not giving us much reason to root for them as a couple. Is he supposed to be like Yong Sik in When the Camilla Blooms as be a dense but loyal puppy? But isn’t he a meteorologist? Doesn’t that require smarts (he spouts off science after his childish fit whenever he disagrees with the forecast) and hard work? Is he supposed to be the authentic contrast to how Sam Dal has been living like a dog in Seoul? Yet, she has moved on and had several relationships since their breakup, and he seems stuck in the past—she even accuses him of not knowing her now, which was poignant because it seemed true. (I think the red ball of yarn is the unraveled red scarf she gave him when she “confessed” while passed out drunk on the street.). I wish he was living more fully in the present if he supposed to show Sam Dal how to live and how to be her authentic self. Also, please Korea National Weather Service, pay your meteorologist better because apparently a mid-career meteorologist cannot afford a ticket from Jeju to Seoul (which is around $75) in a pinch.
The niece’s statement of how she doesn’t like Jeju because of the gossip hit hard. But then the show leans so much into this gossipy Sam Dal chorus, that it is hard to have affection for these hardworking haenyos. We are missing the heart of small town life (see Hometown Cha Cha Cha)—anonymous Seoul seems appealing and a safe haven to the non-conforming women in this family. (And maybe go back to Seoul, if you aren’t going to...

I'm frustrated with this show. I'll admit that I went into it with some pretty high hopes - considering the acting talent on board. There are some solid, rockstar actors in this one. Unfortunately, even these amazing actors can't make this series work for me. The problem is that it's not believable.
1.) Sam Dal is awful. I am struggling to find a reason to root for her, other than just the fact that she has - yes - been extremely, badly wronged. I feel for her there. It's pretty terrible what she's dealing with. BUT - Sam Dal herself is also quite whiney and self-centered. She's loud, abrasive, and I'm having a hard time finding any redeeming qualities. (Maybe that's coming ... ?)
2.) I struggle with understanding how/why anyone would be as devoted and hung-up on her as these boys are. Perhaps it's just at the fault of the writers - but there haven't been many flashbacks to show Sam Dal being the "giver" instead of the "taker" in these relationships.
3.) Yong Pil is too good for her. I just don't understand the level of devotion he has for her. And, really? Sang-do busted his butt to make a fortune to impress HER? Am I missing something here?
There are other issues, too, with the sisters. Truthfully, I found the most enjoyable scene this week to be the one between the daughter and the dolphin enthusiast. THAT was adorable.

I don't know why the drama seems to want to convince us that Yong-pil loves Sam-dal and would do anything for her. We know that already, it's becoming overkill and we still don't know if the reverse is true.

After almost dropping, I found episodes 5 and 6 to be much better. When they brought the focus back on friendship and seeing her friends come together for her was wonderful.
Also, it became clear why she was such due to the scandal. Her facing the stealing assistant was well done. It wasn’t about revenge but clearing her conscience. Once she knew she wasn’t the reason, she felt a weight lifted off her shoulder and was able to act with confidence. She was being herself again. Like she said, let’s see if can succeed on stolen ideas. For how long? It must taunt her for life now.
I don’t think it’s about her career alone. But she is also questioning the connections she has made in the last 15 years. Every connection she made seems superficial now for her. Except her wonderful assistants. So I am curious to see how she rebuilds her life and how she finds her future.
I absolutely detest the love triangle. So Sang Do made no moves after she broke up with Chong Pil. Never went to Seoul to visit her. Never kept in touch. Now that she is back in Jeju he wants to make a move on her? And then what?? She goes to Seoul and he runs the restaurant in Jeju?
Why do we need this plot? (It took be six episodes to realize he is Jayden from
kidnapping day. Lol. )
I also don’t get mom. Why is she so bothered by these two. They are adults. Let them deal with the situation.

I disliked many small details in this show (but I'm not dropping it) but I wholeheartedly agree with you about Samdal wanting to clear her conscience and questioning her work relationships, and I think that's among a few things the show did right and it felt so true to real life. When we are busy going with the flow, and when everything goes smoothly, we just don't have the time (and the need) to see the essentials of many things, such as the connections we made and the relationships we have. And a lot of people keep going like that their whole work life (which is not necessarily a bad thing). But for some, when they hit rock bottom, that's when they realise instead of becoming, maybe it's more about unbecoming what they weren't meant to be in the first place. And they'd realise that what's most important is not how others think of them, even these others being parents, siblings, spouse, but how they see themselves, because in the end, no matter how many people you're surrounded by, you're still alone in this world (and I don't mean that being a bad thing) with every decision for your life having to be made by you, not by your spouse or your parents or anyone else. I could relate to how Samdal chose to face the mentee and her ex. That was the first moment in this show when I thought "ah, if I was her, I would do so too". I'm ready to see Samdal's journey of unbecoming, if that's where the show is heading.

I think Samdal made friends and colleagues in Seoul; it was just their PR departments running and hiding their clients from a public scandal. Guilt by association is a gossipy SNS standard. I don't think it is purely a black or white career decision. I really don't think she wants to return to Jeju to live her parents' life. I don't see Samdal as a person who would abandon her employees. If she does, and gives up her dream, then she is the one severing her connections.

IKR? The love triangle makes no sense, it's just weird. Was Sang Do just sitting in his Lamborghini for eight years waiting for Sam Dal to fail and come back to Jeju? He really thinks this is his "window"? The big opportunity?
And yes, why is the mom so involved in their relationship? It can't be about Yong Pil's mother, because she died before they became a couple. They were in Seoul when they started dating.
If she did not have a problem with them dating back then, she shouldn't have a problem with wtv they do now. Nothing has change. They're even older, so it makes no sense to try to stop them now.

I'm thinking mom cares about both of them and as far as everyone else knows it was a painful breakup and so they worry about them opening old wounds.
As for the cause of the breakup, I was assuming it would turn out that he broke up with her "for her sake" as he reasoned he was somehow holding her back (à la Our Beloved Summer).
With his "pride of Jeju" side gig in tacky trot outfits, and otherwise total devotion to Sam-dal, I find Yong-pil to be a bit of a manic pixie dream boy.

These episodes were great. It is good to know the real reason she was hiding. She was trying to figure out if she did in fact cause her to attempt her life. That take introspection and grit. Thankfully she was able to realize Eun B is just a trashy and shitty human, with jealous and talent that doesn't match. Sam Dal and Yong Pil are moving at a nice lovely pace. I will say I genuinely felt bad for Sang Do in the last episode. They just left him to his own devices while they chatted in front of the bank.
Also Unni continuing to run after she saw her husband is HILARIOUS. She was so embarrassed she just kept going, lol. As for poor Ha Yul, I feel for her and I'm glad she glared at those halmonis, just gossiping in front of her as if she didn't understand.

My main issues continue: I'm frustrated by Sam-dal (also, why did the 2ML announce his presence instead of, like, recording the 2FL and Sam-dal's ex talking smack about her??) I also think that Sam-dal doesn't seem THAT into Yong-pil, Yong-pil is too hung up on Sam-dal, and the show is making things worse by adding yet ANOTHER man who is hung up on Sam-dal and has no personality outside of loving her. I know I'm supposed to be feel badly for her, but like two men are obsessed with her which is not exactly relatable for (I assume) most people. If any show needed to NOT have a love triangle with the 2ML, it's this one. It'd be better to have a 2FL love triangle, but then we might all get SLS.
Also, the constant alcohol. The oldest sisters apparently need therapy since they aren't able to cope in any other way. I'm still rooting for Jin-dal and her ex and mostly watching to see how that goes, and I'm also intrigued by the youngest sister and her romance, which seems to have just begun. And, finally, I'm gonna keep watching to see Count of Monte Cristo girl get her comeuppance. I'm kinda glad that Sam-dal is choosing to let her fail, but COME ON, you literally could have shown that camera footage! And you didn't suspect for a moment that she was trying to Single White (er... Asian?) Female you?
I'm tired of the gossipy old ladies and glad the niece put them in their place, but also I still really hate overly precocious children in romance stories. Can't they be of average or below average intelligence?

"Sam Dal doesn't seem THAT into Yong Pil".
I feel like one of these problems of the show is that they're making it seem like Yong Pil's attitude is the "normal/expected" one.
But if you break up with someone and you don't see them in eight years, I would expect you to act like Sam Dal, not Yong Pil.
She even told Yong Pil that people change after having more relationship experiences. She has been dating and breaking up with other men for eight years. So I think it makes sense she isn't THAT into him.

It was so heartwarming when the friends made up. When Sam Dal went to the police station, I fully expected it to end badly for her, where she says something in a moment of anger that makes it worse for her, but I was so relieved it ended the way it did.
I was with her assistants all the way. Why the hell was Sam Dal sitting on her hands, not defending herself in any way at all?
The trip to Seoul to ask Eun Ju why was dumb as hell. Can kdrama characters just not control themselves and think logically? I am so frustrated I could scream.

OK, so I've been watching Welcome to Samdal-ri in an über-desultory fashion, speed-watching when I don't have anything else to watch--or in the moments when I'm trying to avoid watching Matchmakers because
soccer ruined the pacing, well, because.But...
From the moment the new young hottie showed up on the rocky breakwater with his binoculars, mesmerized by the dolphins while our youngest sister's child looked on in cynical amazement at his simple-mindedness...I was absolutely hooked on episode 6. I watched every second thereafter and really quite liked it.
I liked how our young know-it-all spoke truth to her family about how everyone pities her, and she can tell that they're looking down on her, ya dolts!
I liked how I might really enjoy learning more about Yong-pil's dad and Sam-dal's mom. There's a backstory there, and if this show does that right--there could be tears. Especially given that the marriage that remains seems quite happy.
I liked it that Sam-dal 👏GOT👏IT👏TO👏GE👏THER👏, and I liked how her friends back home were actually HELPING her.
I liked how they one-upped the sympathy game for our 2ML who's clearly going to lose out to Ji Chang-wook (duuuuuh).
I liked the scenes in Seoul. They really upped the Hallmark Movie tone in front of the bank.
I liked how that conference room where the "stolen ideas" meeting was held was the same one used in Sunbae/She Would Never Know. It reminded me of Rowoon. 😉
I liked how I suddenly realized that Sam-dal's loser cheater ex was the funny "side lawyer" in Divorce Attorney Shin.
I liked how, in the end, Sam-dal was worried that she actually WAS the reason that her hoobae tried to commit suicide, and that the very reason she felt left out in Seoul--that no one asked her if she really did the bad deed she was accused of and immediately turned their backs on them--was exactly what she accused her Jeju homies of doing. That sort of projection is very relatable.
I liked how the hoobae was all, "Nah, it wasn't your fault," because she's a proper moron who doesn't actually know what emotional manipulation entaisl--we need that in our basic dramas.
And, I like how when Ji Chang-wook shouts, "Cho Sam-dal!" like as in the way you shout someone's full name with some vigor (he does this actually quite a lot)--I often hear "Yo, Sam-dal!!"
I'm not thinking that the remaining episodes are gonna be as good, but if they can maintain an "episode 6 quality," I'll be happy to watch to the end.

We get a good episode about Samdal’s four friends. Yong-Pil and Sang-do both had romantic feelings for her since they were young but since they were shy and she was bold nothing truly happened. I liked that Samdol put Yong Pil in his place about “knowing” her when she changed so much in the last 8 years (4 boyfriends; 10x salary). But then again, it did not stop the friends for sticking up for her against the reporter.
There was a legal confetti at the police station which k-drama writers do not do well. South Korea has very strict libel laws. Truth is NOT a defense if one publishes disparaging or private information. In fact, it is a criminal charge against the reporter and publisher. That is why so many articles are taken down by celebrity management because of the threat of litigation. Samdal could have stopped all the articles and nonsense at the very beginning instead of running like a scared rabbit.
But Sang-do has more attractive qualities today than Yong-Pil had in the past so this renewed love triangle has started in his favor (but in reality, do we really want either to succeed?) As other Beanies weekly lament in another show, Samdal should just “live her own life” instead of being cornered in her past.
I did not like the implications in Episode 6. Ha-Yul has the most common sense in the entire show. She does not the village because of the superstitious and gossipy elders who pity her because her father died young. She was right: it was no one fault when his time was up (which probably will foreshadow the resolution of the hatred of Sang-Tae toward Mi-ja.
I got the eerie feeling that Yong Pil wants Samdal to return to Jeju after giving up her dream career so she will be more dependent upon him (a subterfuge to get her back in his arms). To be perfectly honest, Sang-do is probably more the gentlemen and a better fit for Samdal than Yong Pil. But that story line will never happen, just because.
Samdal’s time in Seoul did change her - - - for the better but at the end, worse. In Seoul, she was a successful, hard working and strong-willed professional. But she just gave it all up for nothing but a false rumor and an employee betrayal? Samdal wallowing in her own self-pity is terrible considering her staff is still counting on her to redeem her studio and reputation. It would be so easy to have the reporter run with a juicier story of Eun-Ju’s seducing Samdal’s boyfriend, faking a suicide, and stealing her project. Samdal taking the high road was out of character for either her island or Seoul character.
This week story ended very flat with the hard sell that Yong Pil still pines for Samdal (but he did nothing to change that for 8 long years). She moved on; he did not. His constant appearances and hovering around her appear noble but he has a clear ulterior motive. At this point, Samdal giving up, returning to the village and getting back with Yong-Pil would be the “failure” that she dreaded her entire life. The real...

I was going to make fun of this show, because, frankly, I think it and the characters are terribly written, that it has a caricature view of "small town" life, and that its message so far, that you should not forget your roots,is cliched and really, really badly realized so far.
But then it hit me--I've been looking at it as a serious romance, or at least a romantic comedy with a small town theme.
What if, instead, its a sociological study of the curse of those who come from provincial small towns (setting aside the fact that the provincial small town is in an international tourist destination). All of the characters are deeply flawed--even the sisters who temporarily escaped are desperate alcoholics, and they were unable to really escape. The female lead is a photographer who is very skilled, but is unable to handle the relationships with the celebrities and staff because she has an inferiority complex because of her origins. Her one moment of pleasure comes from riding in a fast car, but even though there are hundreds of expensive cars in the city, she only gets excited when she can do it in the small town. The older people in the town are sick and poor, or mentally disturbed. The only thrill they have is in endlessly rehashing one break up that happened years ago. The "younger" men are juvenile--the most successful one is as limited in his pleasures as the female lead, just roaring his expensive car through the neighborhood over and over again; the male lead is pathetic, and even though he has a job, he's really bad at it--his weather forecasting ability consists of looking at the clouds and humidity and figuring that means rain. Even though they are all (apparently) heterosexual, all of the younger leading men are incapable of having a romantic relationship with anyone but the one girl they knew as a child, because she is somehow "safe." (Also, she's a dominant, so there might be something going on with that, as well).
Anyway, I'm going to watch this as a tragedy of the way lives are inescapably socially determined from now on, and it could be my attitude toward this show will completely change.

Actually, I really like that song and hadn't thought about it for a long time. Thanks for reminding me! I just listened to it again. I could really relate to that song at the time--not because I personally was experiencing anything like it--but because I was often driving through small towns in the midwest U.S. to visit relatives. I really could empathize with the desire to escape the limited life that this song captures.
If this show had even just a little bit of the emotion of those lyrics I wouldn't be so harsh about it--I could forgive a lot of its flaws. Or, alternatively, if the two lead characters were appealing, I could watch it as bittersweet romance between one character that wanted to escape, and the other who was psychologically incapable of making a bold move. Bu so far this show falls way short of the song!

I regret to say that despite admiring the two lead actors' elsewhere-proven talent, I am finding little to like in this series. I just don't like anyone. Either they're just really unlikeable (like the heroine), or they're two-dimensional with nothing much to like (like the hero). It's really disappointing.
In some 18 months of kdrama watching, this is only the 2nd one I've watched live. There are plenty from past years on my watch list so I'll be going to them. It's not as if I haven't fallen in love with kdramas that open with a completely self-absorbed main character. But in those, that character has had nuance, humour, light and shade -- something appealing or interesting. But in this show I can't find anything redeeming about the heroine to keep me watching.

I liked these episodes less than 3/4, and found my attention wavering alot.
One thing I can't get my head around in the writing is that the characters point out some of the frustrating or inexplicable behaviour noted in other comments (e.g. Samdal telling Youngpil she's changed & dated other people in 8 years, her assistants questioning why she isn't doing anything about the assistant). But these are all choices the writer has made! They could make different writing choices instead of pointing out the flaws in their own characterisation.
I don't like the decision that Samdal will abandon photography, it seems a weird response to the injustice she experienced.
I'm OK with the main focus being on Samdal right now because kdramas often focus on one lead for the first half and then pivot in the second half -- expecting the Youngpil mother story line to come to the fore more then. And it's also true that friendships can be unbalanced from time to time when one person is in crisis -- none of the four guys seems to *need* support right whereas Samdal is at rock bottom. Friendship is not always a completely even give & take at every moment in time. So hopefully she'll have time to show a more caring side later on when she's in a better space.

I'm enjoying this show a lot, and I thought I'd address some points I have seen others make down below.
1. Why is Sam-Dal's mother getting involved. I reckon this has to do with a) the death of Yong-Pil's mother, and b) the break up 8 years ago. She probably feels guilt over both, and doesn't want to cause his family anymore grief. Why feel guilty? I get the impression Yong-Pil's dad blames her a little for his wife's death. An the break-up? Yong-Pil was clearly devastated by the break up, probably spent months in a depressive cycle and Sam-Dal's mother doesn't want it to happen again.
2. Yong-Pil and Sam-Dal. It's apparent that the villagers think Sam-Dal dumped Yong-Pil and abandoned him, though it's stated he never told anyone she dumped him, they probably assumed because he was so depressed. Sam-Dal says he dumped her. There's likely some truth to both. Sam-Dal is driven, and seems like she doesn't forgive easily. Given how much she put into her career, she probably had all but abandoned her relationship with Yong-Pil, he was always at her side so she took it for granted. He "breaks up" with her in an attempt to get her to realise what she's ignoring, hurt by his "break up", unforgiving Sam-Dal says fine, we're through, and heart broken Yong-Pil returns to Jeju. He never got over her, she never looks back.
3. The love triangle, and the future. Sang-Do has no chance, he's simply there to make Yong-Pil jealous enough to try again. Just like she had to re-examine the roll she may have played in her assistant's life, Sam-Dal will find out how much she hurt Yong-Pil, and re-evaluate their break-up and how much she values people versus her dreams.
I don't think she needs to give up her dreams to be with Yong-Pil, she just needs to value him and let him in, his dream is for her to succeed. This will end one of two ways. She will resettle in Jeju, and rebuild her photography career from the ground up. She will be publicly vindicated, get her career back, and Yong-Pil will take the Seoul job they've been pushing on him so he can be close to Sam-Dal, the only reason he didn't take it was to avoid running into her.

We're finally getting away from the self-pity! Woo-hoo!! Samdal's conscience has been cleared and her friends are lending her their power rangers strength.
I loved the two scenes when Sam-dal confronted Eun-joo and how the primary reason behind Sam-dal's behavior with her return to Jeju was her conscience and the self-doubt, wondering if she had done something unintentionally to hurt Eun-joo to the point of suicide. And then her badass second confrontation about giving Eun-joo her proposal. Shin Hye-sun was mesmerizing in those scenes.
The episodes seem to drift at times, but they go by fast. My nitpicks are that I was expecting more of an ensemble, but it is mostly focused on Samdal. And the tiresome love triangle. The guys' pursuit of her affections seem so trivial compared to Samdal's crisis. It slows down the drama since I can't see her having a future with them at this point.
I liked one of the lines in the drama - a dream doesn't have to be something you achieve, but something you protect. It's interesting to see how the drama is making room for small, unglamorous dreams. Samdal spent most of her life thinking that the only way to dream is to dream big and that one's self is defined by their dreams.

I knew after only a couple of episodes that this show wasn’t for me. You get great leads with proven acting prowess and stick them in a bad wannabe Hometown Cha Cha cha remake. The FL is entirely unsympathetic and her actions are extremely confusing. She’s a powerhouse professional photographer who hides from her problem, drinks to unbecoming excess (as does her sister), goes home just to act like a toddler and then has to deal with a guy who after 8 years is still hung up on her. IRL, his behavior would be interpreted as creepy and obsessive. Telling her to smile because she looks pretty when she does? Then they throw in the tying her shoes trope. Add in another hometown guy who’s also been silently obsessed all this time? Plus, the mean old ladies still gossiping about events from years ago within earshot of her young niece? Neither parent seems openly supportive, the list goes on and on.
This show lacks everything that made Hometown Cha Cha Cha charming. Tbh, I’m surprised both leads read this script and thought this was a good career move.
The cast may help to get people to tune in week after week in spite of the terrible writing, but it’s still, so far, a pathetic imitation of the original it tries so desperately to emulate.

Ep 5
I best part of the episode was how Samdal childhood friends closed ranks and came to her aid no questions asked when the sly reporter went after her and the lengths they went to protect Samdal. Wang Gyeong Tae is the definition of a true friend a person who would defend you and not let anyone demean you when you’re not around and I love just how high regard he and the rest of the childhood friends hold Samdal over themselves.
I really enjoyed that we got to see the old Samdal in the police station, when she realised how much support she had she found her confidence and walked in there like she owned the place and took on the reporter with no fear really enjoyed that scene and that side of her. I like how smart Ha yul is, she doesn’t want to become a person who is all talk no action.
Ep6
I loved the whole scene with Samdal and Bang Eun ju in Seoul, where she thanks her for opening her eyes and showing her just how much life was fake. Reminds me of the scene in My Love from Another Star when Cheon Song yi tells her best friend who secretly hates her ‘’ the one thing you learn when you are at your lowest point is who is really on your side and who isn’t ‘’.
Jin Dal is one of my favourite characters she always steals the show whenever she appears on the screen. Highlights was the incident with the rude driver at the construction site but the best was when she was playing with the traffic wand at home re-enacting Star Wars, I died of laughter when her mother told her to fill her spot the best was Hae Dal quickly running away in the background.
Whenever I watch the episodes, I always wonder why doesn’t Samdal just hire a bunch of expensive lawyers and let them sort out her scandal. We know why in the case of Bang Eun ju because Samdal thought she may actually be at fault and after finding out the truth and knowing Bang Eun ju skills and attitude she will destroy herself faster than Samdal could and as a bonus Bang Eun Ju will do it by her own hand and Samdal doesn’t have to lift a finger to cause her downfall.
But for the press and hate comments, why doesn’t she lawyer up that I don’t understand? We have seen how quickly the prying journalist pulled a 180 and got the hell out of Samdal Ri when he realised he could be slapped with a lawsuit. She can do that with the rest of the press, no one wants to get sued especially when all they have is the word of a conniving AD and an edited audio recording, Samdal has a good case to sue. Anyway, it’s just my thoughts on the subject.
Things I didn’t enjoy in the episode, the drinking is getting a bit excessive between the sisters they’ll use just about any excuse to drink, the Three Terrible Sisters would probably give the girls from Work Later Drink Now a run for their money ( I haven’t watch Bora Debora ). Also, the whole love triangle with Sang Do does feel a bit tacked on.
