The Story of Park’s Marriage Contract: Episodes 3-4

Time traveling to the future and being at the mercy of total strangers is tough, but now our leading lady finds herself caught in the middle of a modern day palace coup. While her fake husband would prefer she stay out of sight and out of trouble, our leading lady has a hard time taking orders. But will her unique knowledge of Joseon prove useful when trying to outwit 21st century business rivals?

EPISODES 3-4

The days when Tae-ha would have inherited his grandfather’s company as the eldest male heir are long gone, and while Sang-mo certainly has a say in the matter, his recommendation doesn’t pull a lot of weight unless Tae-ha also proves himself to be a competent businessman. Thus, Tae-ha has been put in charge of the Hwajeopdo exhibit as a wedding gift from his grandfather — because nothing says “congratulations on your happy nuptials” quite like working on your honeymoon.

Hye-sook is particularly miffed that Tae-ha has been given this opportunity to outshine her, so she shows up on Tae-ha’s doorstep to rattle his cage and get the lowdown on his new wife. After being coolly dismissed by Tae-ha before she can get any dirt on him or Yeon-woo, Hye-sook immediately begins plotting with her henchman HWANG MYUNG-SOO (Lee Jun-hyuk) to ensure that the exhibit tanks.

Y’all, the audacity of this woman is killing me. I don’t fault her for her greed, but it’s the way she tries — and fails — to play the role of a doting step-mother behind closed doors that gets me. Everyone knows she’s gunning to be chairwoman, so why bother with the charade when board members aren’t around? It must be an intentional way of getting under Tae-ha’s skin and toying with him, but I hate that it’s working on me, too! Actress Jin Kyung is amazing at playing the role of evil b***h, and every time she’s on the screen I just want to slap her with a pork cutlet.

The Story of Park's Marriage Contract: Episodes 3-4

Meanwhile, poor Yeon-woo is desperate to return to Joseon. Even though the life she left behind wasn’t great — what with her being a recent widow and all — the future doesn’t have much to offer beyond milk and choco pies. Take away the snacks, and she’s stuck with a stoic copy of her dead husband and a step-mother who’s just as sus as her Joseon doppelgänger.

Getting home, however, is proving difficult. She thought she might have been able to reverse the process by jumping into the hotel pool while clutching the crepe myrtle branch — which is magically as fresh as it was when she broke it off the tree — but that didn’t work. Water? Check. Crepe myrtle? Check. Blood red moon? Ahhhhh… maybe that’s what’s missing.

With no immediate solution to her out-of-time experience, Yeon-woo makes a deal with Tae-ha. She will continue to play the role of his wife for one month in exchange for a place to stay, unlimited snacks, and his help with finding her way back home. She is, of course, referring to Joseon, but he’s assuming he will either help her recover her memories or find her long-lost modern family — who may actually exist, if the missing person photo (shown only to the audience) is any indication.

Unfortunately, there’s not much for Yeon-woo to do in the 21st century besides watch television and practice the sport of curling with her new bestie: the robot vacuum. The way she personifies and befriends an inanimate object is sweetly human, but it’s laced with an undercurrent of loneliness. Despite being some of the most laugh-out-loud scenes of this drama, Yeon-woo’s homesickness and isolation are palpable. Luckily, she’s growing on Tae-ha, and it won’t be much longer before she has some human friends.

The Story of Park's Marriage Contract: Episodes 3-4

After Yeon-woo spots a fake painting displayed in the Hwajeopdo exhibit and helps Tae-ha foil Hye-sook’s latest attempt to tarnish his reputation, he thanks her with a fancy dinner at a traditional style restaurant. He probes her, trying to figure out how she knew could accurately identify paintings by the Joseon artist, and she explains that she was the artist’s benefactor. Reminiscing about the past makes her a bit melancholy, and so she drinks. You can probably sense where this is going…

One piggyback ride later, Tae-ha does his best to corral the drunk Yeon-woo to bed, but her intoxication combined with her lack of knowledge around modern scientific advances (re: electricity) make her a danger to herself. After arguing with some electrical outlets — which, admittedly, do kind of look like faces — Yeon-woo tries to stab them with metal chopsticks.

The Story of Park's Marriage Contract: Episodes 3-4

Before she can electrocute herself, Tae-ha grabs her, and they fall to the floor. Yeon-woo is draped on top of him, and lost in memories of her deceased husband, she kisses an endearingly flustered Tae-ha, whose wide eyes blink almost as fast as his racing pulse. But when Tae-ha’s watch beeps that his heart rate is too high, he panics and accidentally headbutts Yeon-woo. And just like that, our android CEO is smitten — not that he’ll admit it to anyone or himself — but the signs are there.

For starters, he can’t stop thinking about the kiss — to the extent that his subordinates misinterpret his absentmindedness and frustration as displeasure over their work performance. He’s also more proactive about seeing that Yeon-woo has her head examined, and he personally takes her to the hospital rather than relying on Sung-pyo. Yeon-woo’s CT scan shows no abnormalities with her brain — there goes Tae-ha and Sung-pyo’s theory she’s an amnesiac art scholar — but Tae-ha’s doctor friend remains concerned about Tae-ha’s heart.

Tae-ha insists he’s fine and doesn’t need a full examination, but almost immediately thereafter a distressed patient grabs him in the hospital hallway and causes Tae-ha to have a panic attack. Turns out, our stoic CEO has PTSD from a traumatic childhood experience. (Anyone else fill up their K-drama bingo card yet?)

Yeon-woo holds him and gently coaxes him through the attack, but she’s reminded of her husband’s death and can’t fully shake her concern that Tae-ha will meet the same fate as her husband even though they aren’t the same person. Husband or not, Yeon-woo is protective of Tae-ha, so when Hye-sook comes sniffing at their doorstep again, Yeon-woo blocks her entrance and tries not to show she’s intimidated by Hye-sook’s threatening words.

The next day, Tae-ha is back to being an android, and he and Sung-pyo begin teaching Yeon-woo the ways of the 21st century — and the ways of the Kang family. All of this is in preparation for Sang-mo’s upcoming birthday party, where Tae-ha expects Yeon-woo to be on her best fake-wifey behavior.

When they arrive at the party, Yeon-woo is off to a great start, but it’s 100% due to her natural charisma and not her training. First she charms the socks of Sang-mo by answering his old-fashioned riddles, and then she finds a surprise ally in Tae-ha’s young cousin, the young boy who helped Yeon-woo her first day in 2023. And finally, Yeon-woo is reunited with Sa Wol, who latched onto Tae-ha’s aunt, KANG HAE-RYUNG (Sohn So-mang), after she hit Sa Wol with her car.

To be honest, Yeon-woo and Sa Wol’s reunion is my first major gripe with this drama. I was expecting something more emotional given the closeness of their friendship. Not to mention, the relief they both should have been feeling now that they are no longer alone in a strange time and place. While there were a few tears, I overall found their behavior and ability to hide their connection from the Kang family far too rational in the moment.

Then again, when Hye-sook is plotting something behind the scenes, maybe it’s best to be cautious. You see, Hye-sook found out that Tae-ha’s marriage to Yeon-woo is fake and — more importantly — that the bride was originally supposed to be someone else. So, of course, through any means necessary (e.g. bribery, kidnapping, etc.), Hye-sook plots for Fake Bride #1 to show up at the birthday and expose Tae-ha’s contract marriage scheme. Surprisingly, things don’t go according to Hye-sook’s plan because Tae-min, of all people, steps up and pretends Fake Bride #1 is his girlfriend.

Yeah, I don’t know what to make of Tae-min, the self-proclaimed “weed.” At this point, he claims to have no alliances — not even with his mother — which is understandable, seeing Hye-sook is about as motherly as a rock thrown at your head. Given his mommy issues, it’s probable that Tae-min might join hands with Tae-ha after he’s shown a little compassion and caring. Personally, I find him kind of obnoxious, though, and I’d rather see him go full tilt into villain- hood than suffer through his redemption arc.

The Story of Park's Marriage Contract: Episodes 3-4

With the party behind them and Fake Bride #1 on her way to the U.S., Tae-ha breathes a sigh of relief… until Yeon-woo does what any dutiful granddaughter-in-law would do and asks to stay the night — not realizing that a sleepover with the in-laws would come with the expectation that she’d share a (tackily decorated) honeymoon-style suite with her husband. Interestingly, Tae-ha only seems mildly put out by this unexpected arrangement, and grabs his pair of matching pajamas with a resigned sigh.

Before he can put on his couple PJs, though, Sung-pyo calls Tae-ha out for a private meeting. As Tae-ha requested, Sung-pyo searched history records for the man Yeon-woo claims is her father, and sure enough, he existed. Tae-ha is surprised that the details in the record Sung-pyo dug up are an eerie match to the things Yeon-woo has been saying. It’s enough to make Tae-ha want to hear more of what she has to say, but when he returns to their room, she’s missing.

Although Yeon-woo was initially just going to meet up with Sa Wol in secret, she’s lured into the woods by the same mysterious green-eyed woman she met in Joseon. Yeon-woo follows the woman deeper into the woods until she comes across a grave. A man dressed in black sneaks up behind her, but before he can cause Yeon-woo harm, Tae-ha calls out her name. As she turns to face him, the ground gives way beneath her feet, and she starts to fall down a cliff. Tae-ha, who raced to save her, falls with her.

Overall, another pair of solid episodes, and I don’t have many complaints — other than the aforementioned reunion between Yeon-woo and Sa Wol and my aversion to Tae-min’s characterization. For me, those things aren’t enough to detract from the fun of an otherwise enjoyable story. I laughed out loud repeatedly during these episodes, and the scenes of Yeon-woo and her pet Roomba now live rent free in my mind.

This week, my hysterical cackling has been accompanied by a fair amount of squeeing, too. One of my favorite guilty pleasure tropes is the stoic CEO who softens when he learns how to love, and Bae In-hyuk is nailing Tae-ha’s denial as he slowly starts to fall for Yeon-woo. That first kiss/head butt really did a number on him, and I love that the drama went meta and poked fun at his inability to sleep and focus over something as simple as an accidental first kiss. A large part of why this drama hasn’t sunk under the weight of all its tropes is because it doesn’t take itself too seriously, and if it can maintain this tone, I think we have another potential hit on our hands.

You summed up all of my feelings in your last paragraph @daebakgrits!! Squeeing, laughing, heart fluttering was aplenty this week for me - our OTP is so cute! As @hopefulromantic and I were discussing on the fan-wall, the fairytale tint this story has makes it ever so delightfully sparkly. I don't even care or mind that evil stepmum is just evil stepmum (though lowkey I wish she'd get less screen time) because that's just part and parcel with the whole fairytale dynamic. Tae-min though, I'm not sure how I feel about him. It's interesting the angle they've gone for him but something isn't sticking and I don't know if it's the writing or if I'm struggling to buy into Yoo Seon-ho's take on the character.

Yeon-woo is adapting really well all things considering and she hasn't lost her spirit (go girl!). I like that the writers didn't make her try to mask the fact that she's from Joseon, she's been telling anyone who'll listen from day dot that she's not from here, and I like that, even before he found out that she was telling the truth, Tae-ha was somewhat going along with her story/letting her be (I think the dinner scene was the perfect highlight of this, when Yeon-woo was like 'okay fine it's all a big lie' and Tae-ha is like 'I didn't say anything 🤷‍♀️).

I'm interested to find out next week whether he gained memories of his Joseon counterpart - idk if that's what was happening with that flashback scene, but he seemed like he'd realised something??? - and also for our boy to finally admit that his heart boom booms are because he's falling in loooove and not a medical condition lol.

Ok that's exactly how I feel!!! I don't mind evil stepmother at all, because it's part of this fairytale. But stepbrother, on the other hand, I find horribly grating. He was slightly less awful in episode four, but he is such a force of manic chaos, it stresses me out when he's in a scene. I'm so excited to see if Tae-ha remembered Joseon, or if he'll deny it as hallucinations 😅 Boy is definitely catching feeeelings and trying to tamp it down, lol!! 😆🥰

Yes!! And the bright block colour styling is somehow making the manic chaotic vibe even more intense - glad I'm not the only one irked and also finding his character a bit out of place almost!

And yesss, Sat could not be here any faster - I really hope he doesn't chalk it down to hallucinations, especially now that he knows magic is a thing (I'm guessing magic?) and Yeon-woo wasn't lying! I know 12 eps means pacing should be/will be tight but I keep getting surprised by how tight pacing has been so far!

No, I agree - his character does feel out of place with everything else! I do like the grandpa is on his guard with him, though.

I'm so excited for the weekend to see what he makes of all this!!! I feel like secretary is already a believer, now we just need to get Tae-ha on board 😂 I'm definitely enjoying the pacing! These 12 episode dramas have a nice rhythm that I like.

HAHA!! 😂👏👏👏

2

That was my first reaction when I saw this coat!

4

HAHAHAH great callback!! 😂

3

Oh no I disagree! I actually think both ACTORS can pull it off anyway.

But maybe that's because I didn't watch Hearbeat so I'm not bias, and because if I had to rank by *character* I wouldn't be able to like this coat at all, and also because the coats are actually different shades of pink as well... 🤭
Even though I called Woo Hyeol's fuchsia myself originally too, I actually think Taemin's is closer to it...

Fortunately Mêmetic Pink of all shades transcends annoying characters. And I will be adding ALL (including the pant suit from The Kidnapping Day) to the (virtual) Royal Wardrobe.

5

LOL, I finally got around watching this episode and had to pause and see whether someone else thought this, too. 😂
(Tae-min buying that coat from Woo-hyeol would have been a fantastic meta cameo. Such a wasted opportunity! 😂)

4

I LOVE his bright pink coat, I was so irritated it had to belong to a character that is doing nothing for me.

The writing, directing and acting I think are all off here, because by all rights there is a truly Chaotic Neutral "I'm doing this for shits and giggles, I'm bored, and want to annoy both sides" character that could be really entertaining and likable (and then when he eventually swings in the right direction in his character arc climax it's that much more satisfying, the chaotic neutral becomes chaotic good) ... but he is, as everyone else concurs, Not It.

Same here! Tae-min's character is weirdly written, i.e., why would he go and fetch his sister-in-law out of the blue and bring her to Tae-Ha's place of work? His actions are confusing me, and in my opinion, the acting is not there either, which makes it worse. I really hope the writers find a better direction for his character...

“Manic chaos” is a great way of describing it, and I don’t know what purpose he serves other than to sow conflict and arouse Tae-ha’s jealousy, which is ridiculous because Tae-min himself is ridiculous. He’s not so much a character as he is a poorly conceived plot device. Of course things could change, but I’d much rather spend more screen time on the time-traveling duo, the men who might believe them and the romantic hijinks than yet another succession fight.

It might just be me, but I find Tae-min sexually menacing--he definitely leers at the FL. As a plot device, he might be there to offset the frightened of sex Tae-Ha.

It's not just you... I've found Tae-min to be uncomfortably aggressive with the FL.

8

Definitely not just you — his actions are creepy and presumptuous. No respect for FL’s personal space or agency. He looks at her like a toy he wants to snatch away from Tae-ha. And he seems to think she should appreciate the attention.

10

He definitely gives me "maybe I should cross the street" kind of vibe.

Someone on viki said he acted like a drug addict. He gave me that vibe in episode 3, tbh.

Sometimes I feel like Tae Min being so hype and scary it's just the actor's (bad?) acting, and other times I think it's just the character's identity.

According to what Tae Min says, it just seems like he doesn't want to be part of the power game. He'll side with whoever gives him the love/attention he never got, but no one in the family gets that.
They treat him like trash (I was very disappointed in haraboji tbh), so he just decided to act like trash and get in their away. Well, that's just another way to get their attention.

So it makes sense that he's all over the place, but at the same time I expect him to act differently? Like he can be hype and inestable, but I don't understand why would they make him so... creepy? Scary?

There is to me a sense of unease in their scenes, I’m always a bit afraid for her when she’s with him. I don’t know if that’s what they’re going after.

10

@psycho94 I also find him creepy and I am very happy that she is following the advice/lesson on the family and just leaves and refuses to engage with him.

5

Defs not just you - as everyone else has said above too, he's very creepily aggressive with the FL and it's very unsettling ("maybe I should cross the street vibe" YES this vibe exactly @enriquequierecagar).

10

Agree - and I foresee it being used to push Tae-ha into defending Yeon-woo at some point against Tae-mins advances, consequently revealing his own interest.

5

I like how stepbrother is just chaos, but dislike how he gives off the "he's going to snap and whip out a gun and kill everyone" vibe? Like those bad guys in Uncanny Counter 2.

I'm a little annoyed that the drama is also trying to make us feel bad for him. Like oh no, he was upset and crushed the glass in his hand and now he's bleeding. His mom is mean to him. Boo-hoo.

Tae-ha still has a long way to go with his dismissive attitude.

But, the person stealing the show here is Sa-wol. If you thought Yeon-woo was a fast thinker, Sa-wol is on a whole comparative level. Making money off styling children's hair🤣🤣🤣. The intro scene between Sa-wol and Mr. Hong🤣🤣🤣🤣. The Story of Mr. Park's Marriage had better not let Mr. Hong and Sa-wol's screentime together suffer.

I find Yeon-Woo not really consistant as a character from the past except her way to speak. I don't understand how it was Tae-ha who thought to search about her parents and not her when Joseon is famous to keep records of everything. But Lee Se-Young is funny in this role.

I can't find Bae In-Hyuk cold, he's too cute for that. His adorable dimples never are far from showing :p

I like the tropes of fake wedding and them living together. They're cute.

I would prefer a story without Tae-Min. I really don't like his character and the actor doesn't really give him substance for now.

I hope the grandfather will live in this one!

I agree with this. I just feel Yeon-Woo is modern people who speak in Joseon era.

Also I'm a bit confused, she can read the contract but when Hong gives her the novel she said she can't read and must learn new alphabet.
I knew in Joseon era they mostly using 'chinese' or something like that before King xxx invented new korea alphabet like today. So, how could she read the contract? It using the same alphabet as in the novel right?

I think she reading the contract is a plot hole.
And she had a pocket clock, which seems to have been invented in 1510.
So or this is a plot failure, or the person who gave her that clock came from the future.

The Viki synopsis (I know those aren’t always the paragon of accuracy) says she is from 19th century Joseon, so the 1800s. If that’s the case, the pocket watch wouldn’t be out of her time. I do wonder about the writing systems, but a very cursory internet search said the noble class frowned on use of Hangul so it wasn’t widely adopted until centuries after it was invented.

7
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

Ok, then it makes sense. I also thought she was from around 1800, because of the watch, so I had assumed she knew Hangul.

3

Hangul was invented in 1443, so yeah, by the 19th Century, Yeon Woo, as a noble lady, would've definitely been taught it and have been able to read and write it.

As Joey said below, and as you can see later in the episode, when she is studying, she writes down the differences between the two forms; Hangul is a "featural" alphabet, (the shapes encode phonological features of the phonemes that they represent), it still retains most of its features, but dropped the diacritic for long vowels.

7

Even without the synopsis, she says the palace was destroyed in the Japanese invasion, and the first Japanese invasion was 1592.

2

I was under the impression that she agreed to the contract without reading it. Kind of how no-one reads the fines prints and just sign the paper.

7
reply

Required fields are marked *

I think she knew how to read hangul but in a slightly different form. According to Wikipedia "Long vowels were marked by a diacritic dot to the left of the syllable, but this was dropped in 1921."

This also explains why she was able to pick up the 'new' script very quickly.

The kingdom of Joseon went from 1392 to 1897, so there are hundreds of years in which to fit both her original timeline and the pocket watch. So I think they're good there. Summary says much later in the Joseon period, though I don't know of any indication in the drama itself when it takes place.

She definitely should know how to read hangul, I think they are stretching that (nobles scorned it--but that's noble MEN, I think women would surely have used it?) but maybe she's used to a different hand or typeface? I mean...I speak German, but reading an entire book printed in Fracture (that ornate, old-fashioned typeface) is a bit slow going for me, too. (It's a stretch, but I'm trying to make this part work. :) )

Hangul was invented in 1443 by King Sejeong the Great. The Joseon Dynasty reigned from 1392 - 1894/97. This show is set at this end of the Joseon Dynasty.

Before Hangul, they wrote Korean using Chinese Characters, also known as Han Script; this was, and still is, called Hanja.

Hanja - royals, yangban, government officials

Hangul - women, common people

If the novel was written by a woman, it would be in hangul. The contract is clearly in hangul.

Thank you for the recap DeabakGrits.
I really hope at the end of year beanie roundup we have the best dimples category because our main man here has the sweetest, bestest dimples ever. He is so cute when he smiles or tries not to smile, how could our FL not fall for him?
The leads certainly have great chemistry and portray their characters well. It seems like a walk in the park for Lee Se-young.
DeabakGrits mentioned giving the evil stepmother a 'pork cutlet slap' which I feel could also be another great category, there have been so many infuriating characters this year. The stepmother is the only part of the show I find boring as we have literally seen this actress play this role before and although she is a good at her job it feels like a paint by numbers section of the show.
Tae-min feels somewhat disjointed at this stage but maybe that's how the director wants the actor to portray the character so we don't really understand him yet. It just feels odd to the rest of the show.
So happy our Joseon ladies were reunited even if it felt somewhat underwhelming. I’m hoping we get more scenes with Sa Wol as her character is excellent.
Hwaiting show.

This drama is an absolute delight so far! The New Joseon hijinks are hilarious! Lee Se Young is great and Yeon Woo is such as adorable FL. Thoughts/impressions on this week:
- I loved that Yeon Woo was found to be resourceful with the painting, and that Tae-Ha is starting to believe her and... like her? I can't wait for him to realize that, lol. I can't wait for her to use her skills from Joseon to New Joseon (and with the reveal of Midam owner, I think we might head that way)
- I was a bit underwhelmed by Sa Wol and Yeon Woo reunion. Sa Wol seems to have adapted rather quickly and easily to the New Joseon compared to Yeon Woo. The scene in the park with the kids had me a bit confused on her timeline, but it was so funny!
- Secretary's fighting skills: daebak!
- I am confused by the family: who is CEO Min? I thought she was Tae-Ha's step-mother, but then it seemed that Tae-Ha had lost both his parents at the same time. Were his parents divorced? Is the brother the son of CEO Min only or do they share a parent? This was not very clear for me...
- I hope Tae-Ha is not going to die in the New Joseon
- I wonder what is going on with the well, and who is that person that pushed Yeon-Woo? is that the same person that was pursuing her through the woods? I am so curious and I don't have any theories.

Can't wait for next week! Thanks @daebakgrits for the recap!

Side note, it is customary in Asian culture to hold a memorial for deceased loved ones. They can pass at any time.
Regarding stepmother, I'll keep it vague as I have read the web novel. You are heading in the right direction with this theory. The show has added so many more nuanced layers than the web series and it's so much better. If they had followed the web novel it would be more like the typical rom com. I like that the writers don't take the audience for being dumb and is actually providing an intriguing storyline. I could play a drinking game with all the times the word trope is used to describe Korean dramas.

That scene looked like it took place at a temple, so I'm wondering if the Kang family practices ancestorial rites there. Maybe the mother's portrait was already on display, and when the father died, they added his picture next to hers.

I love the women - female lead and friend. They are so smart, resourceful and quick on their feet. The way Sa Wol grasped the situation and distracted everyone but did not come running to YW was such a level headed thing to do. I hope the show finds a way for Sa Wol to go stay with our leads so she can steer this romance ship in the right direction. And of course, these two together will be a force to deal with. They might even start a fashion business and success. I want that for them.

I do like the fish out of water situations but I am glad the show didn’t write their characters to take a 180 turn. They are still the same be it Joseon or modern.

The whole chaebol fight is boring. Tae Min is frustrating as a character and his acting is limiting too. Would be worse if they make him a 2ML which I bet it is coming given how he looked at YW when she wrapped a scarf around his hand.
The chaebol mother - how many more such characters does this actor have to do? I feel like this is the only role she plays in all dramas 😂

Oh yes! Great point about when Sa Wol dropped the cups/plates. It looked like a natural slip. New girl on the job. No one suspected her.

I would like it if Yeon Woo confided in Tae Ha and told him her bestie is here. The three (or four with Sung Pyo!!) could band together and later on solve the mystery.

I almost want Yeon Woo & Sa Wol to be roomies, but then I want Yeon Woo & Tae Ha to have their own private space more. 😂 Plus Sa Wol could be a helpful spy at Grandpa's place.

Well I'm delighted!! I was talking on the fanwall with Beanies about how there's nothing super "new" about the ingredients in this drama, but it still feels charmingly fresh and fun!! It does remind me of Queen In-Hyun's Man, which was very "meh" for me, but this is much more fun. Bae In-hyuk is ADORABLE and I love his little facial expressions as he reacts to our dynamo FL. Not gonna lie, that kiss was a welcome surprise, and I loved how Tae-ha was all shook up. How long before he's a hunk of burning love? It looks like he already can't help falling in love. Right now, the stepbrother ain't nothin' but a hound dog, the one jarring note in what is otherwise, for me, a cohesive whole. The humor really really works for me and I laugh throughout. The reveal of the man in black made me go "WHAT" out loud, but I should have known. Is this the year of cool secretaries? He is a martial arts master, loves romance novels, and has a sense of humor 😄 I've continued to be pleased that Tae-ha is starting to warm up, but he's never been as rude, cold, or cruel as I worried he might be. He's mostly trying to hide behind a stuffed shirt persona 😂 Lee Se-young continues to be awesome, and I want her to join forces with her present day/past mom and have a joint hanbok empire!!!!!

Kiss in ep 4 was not on my bingo card but I welcome it with open arms (more of this PD-nims!). Great observation also about Tae-ha feeling less 'cold' and more like desperately trying to keep up the stuffed shirt persona. And yes I'm waiting for when Yeon-woo and Tae-ha join forces commercially and her jazzed up hanbok designs will make the company profits skyrocket and blow evil step mum out of the water.

Am I the only one who was surprised to see Sa-wol working in grandpa's house? I mean... one day she is in a hospital, and the next she is there working as if she had been there for months 🤔
I guess we will know about her 2023 adventure later.

I'm having a good time with this drama. I think the main reason are our two leads, which have incredible chemistry together, but I also like Mr. Secretary, So-wol and grandpa.
(The annoying step-brother... I don't get this character's reason to be in the story, and I the acting is quite bad, at least so far).

The car that almost hit Sa Wol was grandpas daughter. She is also a character in Joseon.
So I assume the daughter got her treated in the hospital and Sa Wol managed to get a job by talking to her. And that’s how she ended up there.

That's what I thought too, but as this show is so fast paced we haven't seen all those scenes: ML's aunt taking her to the hospital, caring for her, giving her the job, etc.
I even thought for a moment that there were two identical characters, So Wol from Joseon and another one from 2023 (the one in the hospital)... I wouldn't have liked that, because I'm shipping Mr. Secretary with her.

The show chose the "tell-not-show" for this, unfortunately. Sa Wol tells Yeo Woo, while they are crouching in the back yard in Grandpa's house. She found herself in a strange place, but almost the first person she saw was "Machon-Daek", so she stuck to her in the hope that she will be led to her agassi.

I was confused too since the scene of her at the hospital eating a snack and the house scene were only half an hour apart in the same episode, and probably only like 2 days apart in the drama.

My guess is that perhaps she did the hairbraiding business the first few days before getting officially discharged and the snacking scene is when she had to return for a follow-up appointment.

Or perhaps she had only gone to the hospital for a few hours, took up the maid job immediately, and now goes back to the hospital regularly for her hairbraiding side-hustle.

I love the women in this drama--especially the absurdity of Yeon-woo and Sa-wol adapting to the 21st century with aplomb, with Sa-wol immediately understanding how to make money in a service economy because she had been a maidservant, and Yeon-woo immediately grasping the corporate succession fight because it was exactly like Joseon court politics. Also, I'm one of those who can't help liking Hye-sook as the scheming antagonist, partly because Jin-Kyung is one of those beautiful 50 something year olds which, I'm sorry, tend to draw my admiring gaze.

Which brings me to what I don't like: Tae-Ha, both in his current and even in his nicer Joseon version. I realize the show is making him a stereotypical arrogant Chaebol male lead on purpose, as a joke, but there are two things that drive me crazy about these characters. Not only are they initially not just cold and arrogant, they are also totally ill-mannered, in a way that shows them poorly educated in social skills. Now, I don't know many real life men from chaebol families myself, but you kind of figure that when one of them encounters a stunningly attractive woman, a little courtesy might emerge just from, say, physical attraction. Especially when that attractive woman is doing you all sorts of favors, is clearly extremely bright, and pretty charming. Even though you might think her delusional, you would treat her with a lot more sympathy than the modern Tae-ha is doing here.

But that brings the second stereotypical thing, which also includes the Joseon Tae Ha--making the ML a person who totally denies himself any sort of sexual desire--in fact, in this case, actually makes him afraid of any sort of physical intimacy to the point that he cowers in a Joseon doorway, or headbutts the woman while she's lying on him on the modern floor to get out of it.

I know that sexual timidity, as well as covering himself up and shrieking like a 10 year old when a woman sees him with his shirt off, which is another common male character trope, are designed to appeal to women viewers. And I know in this one, he's supposed to be one of those stereotype kdrama males. But I can't help myself- every time I see this type of character as a male viewer I think these ill-mannered, self-centered, not-normally sexed men who are fearful of women seeing them with their shirts off should not be allowed the love of an intelligent, beautiful and charming female lead!

I loveeeee the leads! They are so cute and funny together. Their chemistry is great! I love the many moments that show Tae Ha is attracted to Yeon Woo. Yeon Woo also has her moments. She cracked me up with her meditation whenever her thoughts turned dirty~

Tae Ha may be cold and aloof, but he is not cruel. I also like that he acknowledged her and appreciated her help. It's lovely that he already cracked a smile and lowering his guard with her.

Got a soft spot for Yoo Seon Ho so I'm hoping his character improves. Tae Min is not a straight villain like his mother. I like that he can be unpredictable and he does not cower in front of his mother AND his grandfather. He can throw a wrench in Hye Sook's plans anytime.

His styling is the typical look of a rebellious chaebol - dyed hair and flashy, bright clothes. I wish some of his outfits fit better. Wasn't a fan of the green, oversized top. I did like the bold violet long coat! Rich, beautiful color and he looked extra tall and handsome in it.

I'm slightly dreading a love triangle though. I'm completely firm on OTP's side so there's no way I can support Tae Min.

Sa Wol looked so cute and sassy in her braids! I'm not crazy about her demure look and her bangs. I think she was just being cautious when she met up with Yeon Woo. Tae Min almost eavesdropped on them. It was so smart of her to latch onto a familiar person and then wait for the likely reunion with Yeon Woo.

Good to see Grandpa has a hidden, cunning side. He seems wary of Hye Sook.

The two secretaries being badass and fighting each other was a cool surprise!!

The pacing is real good atm. The suspense in the final scene had me on edge. That cliffhanger kills me!

And like you, I really, realllly hope they don't make Tae-min a SML 😅 But if they do, he'd be the only one on board that ship, because the FL is already (hopefully) only focused on Bae In-hyuk (*as am I, lol*). The cliffhangers have been effective!! I was legitimately creeped out by the dim figure in the woods, but in a fun way, if that makes sense...

Thanks a lot @DaebakGrits for this recap as fun as the drama. It made me laugh again as I want to queue to kimchi-slap Jin Kyung.

I was pondering if "robot chingu" will make it to my trope-list (roomba in Are you humain, bigger model in Blood and Where Stars Land... one more drama and it's valid) so I did not feel the loneliness of her situation.

I could do with less Tae Min (and his mother !). I fear that the hand bandage was a first stone in a triangle set-up. Please show, do not go this way. Or is that a Tae Min thing to want the woman of his brother ? (Chicago Typewriter's Tae Min started annoying as this one, but became a good villain later).

What I love about the show is that the writer and director doesn't take the audience for a fool. I read the webtoon and can say that the show has taken a creative narrative in unraveling the fate aspect. The webtoon focuses more on their relationship. It's refreshing to watch a show that I think is one thing and it turns out to be different in a good way. Love the way the show set up the two main characters in the first episode and like Yeon Woo, I am trying to figure out why she was sent to the present. Are Yeon Woo and Tae Ha time travelers or are they reincarnations of multiple past lives? Did grandfather meet Yeon Woo before? Did Yeon Woo's family fall into misfortune after she disappeared because grandfather has her items in the present time? So many questions. The musical score adds to an already intriguing set up. I've laughed, shed tears and felt dread at all the times I think as an audience we were supposed to.
Side note: It is custom in Asian culture to hold memorials for loved ones regardless of when someone passes.

The grandfather doesn't have HER items exactly, he has past Tae Ha's painting of young Yeon Woo, which Tae Ha has had ever since their first meeting as kids and which I'm pretty sure Yeon Woo didn't find out about before falling down (getting thrown in) the well. (As far as we know).

Two terrible Tae-min's on air simultaneously!

Sa-wol and Yeon-woo reunion!! I feel a lot better now that Yeon-woo has the quick-witted Sa-wol by her side. I wanted more Sa-wol and Yeon-woo time.

This is a drama that I would label as very charming. Stepping back, I think the story is going well and there isn't anything that stands out as amazing or innovative or clever. It's not even the funniest. BUT I am just so charmed, and I think that is mostly owed to Lee Se-young and Joo Hyun-Young (as Sa-wol). They are cute and spirited. And Tae-ha's secretary sparkles too and full of impressive skills, perfect for Sa-wol, though I"m not sure how the romance across timelines will work. Will we see a Joseon version of him?

My heart is still stuck on Joseon Tae-ha.

I love the reveal of Yeon-woo's mom being a sought-after hanbok-designer in modern times. Kim Yeo-jin looks amazing in that hanbok.

As of now, I'm struggling to buy Bae In-hyuk's performance but I love how he's struggling to deal with Yeon-woo's antics, mans is being put through the wringer and Im here for it.

Aside from that, I have to confess that Tae-ha's brother is lowkey growing on me. I'm enjoying his stupid dynamic with Yeon-woo and how she also puts him through the wringer like you GO girl. I'm looking forward to more of their chaotic scenes together too.

I love all the interactions between Yeon Woo and Tae Ha. When drunk Yeon Woo kissed Tae Ha and forgetting about it while TH kept it up all night must be the top of my list. Tae Ha is smitten and he definitely should smile more. Android Tae Ha must become more human!
I like Yeon Woo. She is smart, resourceful and empathetic towards troubled Tae Ha. She is the best person to help him at this time.
I was worried for a moment when Sa Wol was so cool headed when she saw Yeon Woo for the first time. I thought they will introduce amnesia, I am glad they did not.

1) the sismance between Yeon-Woo and Sa Wol ROCKS!

Moral of the story: in any time travel or parallel universe, never leave home without your BFF/partner in crime

Second another Beanie's observation that they should team up with their New Joseon's counterpart and form a coalition lol

2) TBH, this is more reminiscent of "Rooftop Prince" than "Queen In-Hyun's Man" -- especially in the (initially hidden) impetus for why they even time-travelled to the present / to that exact rooftop / exact FL's home.
Taking reference off "Rooftop" -- my guess is the clues to the "death" of Joseon Tae-Ha can only be found/extrapolated in present day New Joseon, hence the time-travel.

So her being thrown into the well was no accident. and husband's early death (in spite of his fatal ticking time bomb condition) is premeditated murder in all likelihood. Her mission is to solve the mystery - once mission completed, she gets teleported back.

3) Tae-min: agree with everyone (I love the descriptor "I think I will cross the street", with an addendum: "at the worst possible timing when it goes from amber to red, at peak traffic). His energy is undoubtedly chaotic, manic, and wild card, I can't tell which way he will swing. But characters who can turn at the drop of a hat are also v exciting in a frantic plot like this

EXCEPT this: sorry don't pelt me with pebbles, *but* I think he will turn into a SML (he was making moony eyes at YW when she bandages his palm out of the kindness of her heart)

4) Grandpa -- Burning million dollar question: is he a time-traveler
too? (he has her portrait)
If not, at least they has been tasked from generation to generation to wait for the "person" to show up. and when she does - these are the signs to look for (her equivalent of the Cinderella signet of legitimacy - shoe; her case - norigae & pocket watch)

In Old Joseon - her own grandfather gave her the pocket watch and she marveled: it never stops running!

5) The romance is fun, but I am waaaay more vested and expectant of the theme of female empowerment and how she can finally unleash her sartorial and entrepreneurial talents in New Joseon! GIRL POWER FTW!

"You will lose something big, but you will gain what you desire"
-- I. can't. wait.

I have been wondering if Tae-ha was actually poisoned when he died in episode 1 as it's a bit strange to start vomiting up blood if you're dying of a heart attack I would think.
