The main event of a Korean child’s first birthday is the doljabi (돌자비) ceremony. A variety of objects are put on a table or tray in front of the child and whatever the child chooses foretells his or her future. Parents lay out certain items that, depending on which the baby picks up, will hopefully predict the baby’s future life. The traditional items are; a piece of thread (for long life); some money (for wealth); a pencil (for a studious or academic future); rice (for much food in life). Nowadays parents often also add toy stethoscopes, golf clubs, or computer games—hoping for that future profession.

This week there was another first birthday milestone. ChatGPT is now one year old. Its parent, OpenAI, went through a messy divorce and remarriage last week with its CEO-founder, basically over the light speed direction of the company and its implications.

ChatGPT is a digital program believed to be capable of superficially understanding natural language inputs and generating written responses to them. It was hit and miss at the beginning because its predictive word association lacked any human experience or context. However, its capabilities far beyond what other state-of-the-art digital assistants like Siri and Alexa could provide.

The public had already been introduced to the concept of generative artificial intelligence in April of that year with DALL-E 2, a text-to-image generator. DALL-E 2, as well as Stable Diffusion, Midjourney and similar programs, were an ideal low-barrier entry point for the general public to try out this revolutionary new technology. However, the training of the program is fraught with litigation on copyright infringement claims over images. If you google “cat drawing” your results will be mostly elementary school crayon drawings to simple line art. But the machine program generates art “in the style” of the top one percent of artists, by using their work as the basis for a derivative work. The US copyright office has determined that in order for a copyright to be granted, it must be created by a human author.

The technology has also surged into the music industry where fake songs by real artists are becoming more common. It is also being used in motion picture and animation industries, which is a problem for actors and writers who may be replaced by machines.

Businesses have gotten on the AI bandwagon, too. However, the results have not been as great. Several attorneys were sanctioned for using AI to write legal briefs that contained false case citations.

I wonder what the doljabi table for AI would be like: a piece of code (for copyright protection); some Bitcoin (for wealth); a court summons (for litigation/damages); and a Terminator doll (for world domination).

While I think all forms of fortune telling are utter nonsense, the doljabi ceremony is certainly several steps above the appalling American first-birthday trend: the smash cake. It’s a little cake they put in front of the birthday baby to smash, squish, smear on their face, and just make a general mess. While some people say it’s a way to provide baby with “a unique sensory experience” (I kid you not), the real intention seems to be to generate cutesy photos for sharing on social media.

Quick—somebody call the SPCC (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Cakes)!

Agreed. I LOATHE cake smashing and anything that generally destroys food! Can't stand food fights or pie-in-the-face games. I hate the waste and also the visuals make me a bit queasy. I don't find food covered babies cute at all. I also despise parents using their children for attention.

oh yeah. There was an American couple who set off fireworks for their stupid party and inadvertently started a wild fire that lasted for 23 DAYS. And then another stpid couple in my own country dyed a waterfall blue, therefore contaminating all the water in the region. I wish I was joking.

OMG. Why is critical thinking so hard for some people?
That kind of stupidity and arrogance on a grand scale is why we are destroying our planet.

2

Gender-reveal parties have been responsible for a number of other wildfires besides the one you mentioned. They have also been deadly. For example, a father-to-be in New York State was killed when the device he was testing in his garage exploded. The explosive device created by a couple in Iowa worked like a pipe bomb, sending metal shards into the air and killing a guest. A gender-reveal CANNON (what idiot thought that was a good idea?) caused the death of a guest at a Michigan party. A pilot in Mexico died when his plane crashed while spraying pink water over the partygoers. Two other people were killed in another gender-reveal plane crash a couple of years earlier. Unfortunately, this is by no means a comprehensive list.

4

Italics gone wild. Another HTML fail. 🤦‍♀️

1

@babylilo I'd call it an HTML win, as the italics seem appropriate to emphasize the sheer stupidity of these stunts. If I remember correctly, the Iowa victim was the baby's grandmother. Imagine having to explain that when the poor kid is old enough to ask.

A photo of my brother at his second birthday party, face and hands covered in green frosting, is a family treasure but that wasn't done purposely - my mother served him a tiny piece and then got distracted for a minute. Fortunately we lived in a warm climate and just took him outside and hosed him off. Intentionally wasting food would make every departed member of my family spin in their graves so fast they'd generate electricity.

7

I am not crazy about the whole gender-reveal ritual as a concept—especially the use of pink and blue to indicate the baby's sex. Gender stereotyping before the child is even out of the womb...ugh.

If folks insist on engaging in this stupid practice, they should go back to the original (and much safer) idea: a cake that reveals either pink or blue layers when you cut into it. A cake meant to be eaten, not smashed.

Our "My Demon" would certainly take issue with this egregious waste of delicious cakle!!!!!

My Demon has held out in Australia's Netflix Top 10 for almost a week now!! Was 4th for a fair few days and is 9th right now, but that's pretty really cool considering it's only just premiered. It's also number 4 in the global Top 10 for non english shows! I can only recall maybe 3 dramas that have charted in our Top 10 in 2022/2023, and usually never this early - most only around or after the ep 5/6 mark.

Given the global response for season 1, I'm also expecting the second season of Sweet Home to make it to the Top 10 this year here, would be very cool if both dramas were in the Top 10 at the same time!

I know ratings and things like this aren't everything, but I consider it a little win and cause to do a quick happy dance, especially because unfortunately a lot of people I interact with IRL tend to look down at K-dramas. So when it does visibly chart well, I feel a little proud and can be like 'HA take that!!'.

cold season isn't even that cold and here i'm trembling - when it gonna bloom - surely gonna be quite entertaining challenge.

It's already blooming and december is barely starting - tough competitive days - challenge accepted.

rain - yeah - brings down temp - naah - temp goes high - naaah

but weather says be ready for the 1st week tan tan cold.

This kind of weather is easy one when you are pretty young - hold blood gushing through your body - burning 1000s of calories so easily.

Young days are cool when you are competing with monks - shaolin martial art and what not of tv media - In cold season water vapors make wite cloud around you that you can't even see far - barely 5 meters - water that can numb your body within 30 seconds - taking bath in that cold water is just marvelous experience - Onsen is boring.

Also, ground water at above level have surface temp - so 1st 100-300 litre quite cold - next one is 23 degree up because thanks to mother earth heat - and by that time ur body is already accustomed to outside cold so you think this is hot water, which it isn't.

This is 5 am monk mania - u feel cool b/c u r d only one who is active - it's perfect night - water as hits ur body generate mor white cloud - u shiver n then u calm n then u start to enjoy - It's like there exist this world only. 15 minutes later

u see the house u enter the house n hen u come to know what room temp means when there is big difference of 10-15 degrees compared to outside almost 0 Zero.

challenging but entertaining - Such peace and such nice beautiful atmosphere - best is all +ve energy and vibe all around. everything.

I can't do that in 2023 - not at all - that is a bit too much - It's good for middle school days.

as said before - money doesn't matter - yeah - money is for materialistic needs. it isn't for ur heart n character.

Money matters the most - yeah - without money there is nothing - food for mind itself comes from when stomachache is full - everything demands give n take n its easiest way is money to get whatever resources u want. The delusions of love, passion and everything fly away in the face of adversities and rough air or unfair world.

didn't hv time for bleh soap operas this week - as said before gonna do stock market in 2024 and also forex - so i sat through and started to check stocks - did not much fundamental analysis but did through technical analysis. 1 stock 10 stock 100 stocks. the more i watched the more got entertained - the more i got excited - read news checked charts - then i'm not much into algo aka automate trading - then started to check out and then starte to code and then started to backtest - after 100s of stocks - i felt happy - this is my style - enough hard work - went to groups - shared my views and knowledge and got 10 beautiful jackpot in this week alone - those who did, did earn 100% - i was like woah

happy - for hardwork paying - for accuracy - slightly frustrated as no material gain or return for me. But that's for 2024.

This is d trouble of being active everywhere - u r left with no time for anything - busy busy.

This happiness was all achieved through - hardwork and it gave good confidence as return - everything pays off if u hv the eyes and good heart to see it.

Postcards to the Edge of the Holidays:

1. I can't believe it's December already and it's time to start stocking up on baking ingredients for the holidays. I think I might make chocolate pies, cookies, biscotti and red velvet marble cake to give away to friends.

2. Made a Spotify playlist that compiles all the ballads from my favourite K-Drama romances so far. Played it and realised that listening to them continuously one after another was seriously making me swoony!

K-Music artists are seriously beating their Western counterparts at writing and performing romantic heartfelt ballads. And I noticed something - the power ballad is not dead when it comes to K-Drama OSTs. Instead, they are updated for the 21st century.

3. Suddenly realised that there might be something called "too much of a good thing" because I feel deluged by the holiday season offerings on Netflix this year - MY DEMON, WELCOME TO SAMDAL-RI, YO YO HAKUSHO, SWEET HOME 2, and GYEONGSANG CREATURE. Don't think I need to leave the house all holiday break except for food LOL! I'll just be binge-watching everything with like 10 layers of skincare on my face and cold drinks and snacks within reach.

4. Operation Hit 9TailedVixen with the Lee Dong-Wook Truck (TM) has failed... because I got hit by the Jung Hae-In (TM) Truck instead. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

5. Thanks to insanely great year-end sales for K-Beauty skincare stuff, I think I might have overdone it on the beauty shopping front. But I just justify it as stocking up on what I need for the next 6 months (aka #girlmath). LOL!

6. In the Battle Against The Confucian Patriarchy News:

SOUTH KOREA Korean women are taking the Lysistra route in the brutal battle against the Korean patriarchy as they stand up to Asian machismo:

https://english.elpais.com/international/2023-04-01/no-dates-no-sex-no-weddings-no-kids-korean-women-are-standing-up-to-asian-machismo.html

As the headline goes: "The movement of the ‘four no’s’ poses strong opposition to patriarchy in South Korea, which has the largest wage gap of the developed countries."

CHINA: Over in the Land of OG Confucian Patriarchy, women are continuing to say "no" to having kids, much to the horror of the Chinese government and their parents:

https://www.cnbc.com/2023/04/10/china-faces-low-birth-rate-aging-population-but-women-dont-want-kids.html

And they are continuing to say "no" because "most husbands in China often do not play a pivotal role in a child’s upbringing, and the burden falls entirely on mothers instead."

This East Asian woman is laughing in Schadenfreude over here.

2. Yup, the 8/10 stat is shocking but I wouldn't be surprised if it was fairly accurate given just how bad the numbers for male violence against women is in conservative and aggressively patriarchal countries are.

That is why when I get teased by friends who suggest I should go to Korea to get my own Oppa, I firmly decline.

Did any of you see this article? https://www.polygon.com/entertainment/23964539/k-drama-history-american-korean-popularity-success-hallyu

Some excerpts that I liked:

"While Hollywood (and American culture generally) likes to pretend we are all middle class, Korean media of all kinds freely delves into the anxieties and dreams that manifest in the economic hierarchy of which we are all a part under capitalism. Though most people don’t think of romance as an exploration of class anxiety and, eventually, fantasy, it usually is — a dream of finding economic security without having to sacrifice dignity or love in the process."

Oh man, I messed up this comment, too. Well I'm not deleting again, so here's the other excerpt I meant to post:

"This format often incorporates other genres into its storytelling, and isn’t afraid to lean into an OST. But it’s romance — a genre developed by and for women — that traditionally drives the story, making it an alternative to much of what modern Hollywood has on offer. "

Thanks @vienibenmio, for this interesting survey. As I've said probably too many times on this site, although my fandom is only 4 years old, much more recent than some) I also was initially attracted to kdramas because of my love of romance but also because of the way they depicted class/women concerns and issues -- and I obviously enjoy participating in the fan community!

I do think kdramas came at a time when, for a variety of reasons, U.S. t.v. was more focused on male anxieties and male work culture (think various police shows and procedurals like CSI, Seinfeld, The Office, etc), and that explains at least some of kdrama appeal in the U.S. There was a U.S. outlet for romance t.v. that emerged at that time outside of the daily soap operas, the still existing Hallmark Channel, that is probably more popular in the U.S. than kdramas in terms of overall viewership. But its shows were/are so obsessed with stressing the so called traditional values of small town America, that I think they missed the more complex depiction that many of the best romance kdramas have--showing women's anxiety about balancing work/family/relationships in a too slow changing male dominated culture.

Mainstream Hollywood, meanwhile became split between the blockbuster action hero movie, including of course Harry Potter/X-men/Hunger Games and the intimate, film festival type production. A lot of those art house films are excellent and complex, and do not at all neglect women's issues, but their audience is limited. And while I think a number of big screen films are also very good, and actually attract a subculture fandom more intense than kdrama fan communities--especially associated with cosplay and Comic-con-- these films very rarely address gender explicitly and if they do so it becomes a point of controversy among fans.

The other unique contribution of kdramas to global media, the sageuk, is more a combination of love of exoticism (the outfits, the elaborate social hierarchy and ritual) and a deep interest in a kind of top down history involving kings/queens/court that is also present in all cultures. While there are some sageuks that deal very effectively with current women's issues (like the one I am enjoying right now, The Matchmakers) I think many of them appeal to a far different kind of audience, one less interested in romance, less concerned with the place of women in contemporary society, and generally more interested in issues of historical authenticity than in fictional depictions of present day life.

Anyway, thanks again for the article--it made me realize how much I belong to the "Netflix and big streamer era."

Yes, I definitely agree with you about Hallmark Channel serving the same niche. In addition to what you said about the small town values and conservatism, Hallmark movies are also generally poorly written and have low production values. It's almost like the entertainment that caters to women here is relegated to third rate resources. Whereas in Kdramas you have top notch writers, directors, actors, and great production quality delivering a very high quality product. That's the reason my husband generally likes them and watches them with me, even though he's not a romance fan like I am.

I do recognize that Kdramas are this way because the Korean entertainment industry has realized that women are a huge demographic. The west seems to always ignore that--even when a movie does well with women, they just constantly take away the wrong message. And when they give us lower quality products and women don't watch them, they take away the message that women-catered projects don't make money (that's what happened with romcoms in the late 2000s, they started becoming terrible so people stopped watching, then the message became "don't make romcoms").

Hallmark IMO is lazy, and it can be lazy because it's serving such a niche area that isn't really catered to in any other way.

Sorry, this is a topic that I could talk about for hours! Lol

@vienibenmio Hallmark was what I watched for the last 5 - 8 years if I didn't want to do re-watches of Nora Ephron films or some of the decent Hollywood rom-coms of the 1990s to mid-2000s.

Then I got dragged onto the K-Drama Express Train (TM) by Netflix because after I finished watching MY HAPPY MARRIAGE the Netflix algorithm kept throwing DESTINED WITH YOU in my face ... and that silly love potion plot and Rowoon made me laugh til I cried and that was it.

Not getting off the K-Drama Express Train (TM) for the foreseeable future.

3

With regards to Sageuk dramas - I think many of them do better than C-Drama historical dramas (including the wuxia genre) of dealing with women's issues (or at least acknowledging them). At least from the ones I've seen.

Not sure about J-Drama historical dramas but some contemporary J-Dramas do a great job of depicting women's lives and issues (especially Slice-of-Life dramas).

Yes, I agree, in fact I've seen a whole subgenre of sageuks that are mainly concerned with women's struggle against Joseon patriarchy. Of course, they are often total historical fantasies in the way they show the woman winning out (example Sungkyunkwan Scandal). I only wish it had been true!

I have not seen historical Chinese dramas, but I have seen a fair number of contemporary romance cdramas, and the last couple of years the censorship to take the edge off any criticism of Chinese patriarchalism has gotten too much for me, so I had to quit watching. As you know better than I do, there is a close connection between authoritarianism and oppression of women, visible in China/Iran/Hungary/Russia/North Korea etc. Even in U.S., authoritarian friendly politicians have made the removal of women's rights their main issue, to my great dismay (especially since their main source of support is men, and men my age (50s-60s). So if kdramas main source of support is women, it makes them by definition anti-authoritarian, in my impeccable reasoning!

4

@hacja I often tell people there is a huge difference between Hong Kong cinema/drama and C-Dramas.

HK dramas and cinema can be quite progressive with the depiction of women. Many FLs in HK shows are outspoken, proactive etc but there is also a wide range of female characters included. HK-dramas could go toe-to-toe with K-Dramas on that front in its heyday. At least, that was the case before HK was returned to China.

Now, I don't know. Haven't watched HK stuff for a long time and it's not hard to imagine that the Chinese government's censorship has muzzled the artistic freedom and whatever progressivism there was in the HK film industry.

4

Hello, you should check the C-period drama called Faithful which deals with women's issue.

An interesting example, 'Past Lives'. A film that gives us everythning we want from Asian cinema... but its NOT Asian cinema. Why is American cinema only good when its about Asians?

I had a bunch of lists in my original text (both ordered and not) that didn't copy on DB at all: is there a chance I was doing something wrong?? I don't remember ever struggling with this before, or needing some extra steps, but maybe I just have a bad memory?? xD

So now I know how to write lists in HTML but am still very confused about how DB works!! ahah

@cubely Unordered lists do work on the Fan Wall, but the CSS is sucky and they look bad. In my memory (and I'm sorry, this is only a memory) it could be that ordered lists don't work?? Anyway, if they do--the left margin is way to far to the left.

But, as a reminder, when you delete a Fan Wall post--it gets really deleted, not just marked deleted. So, if you post something and you don't like the way it looks, you can just "undo" for realz.

All this to say...take HTML risks on the Fan Wall! It's fun over there.

Oh yes!! I did infact posted-deleted-reposted my latest posts a few times!! 🤣
And yeah, the lists ended up looking weird, still, but I'll take it...next time I'll know what to expect!!
Thanks for the help!! 😊

Happy weekend Beanies and keep Beaning On!
Does anyone else feel both excited and terrified whenever December arrives? Festivities are good, deadlines are bad. The End of the Year Review and Roundup 2023 somehow manage to be both at the same time!😅Oh well, no choice but to roll up my sleeves, crack my knuckles and start writ…oh wait, I have to finish my K-dramas first…😅

Consider the alternative. Every day I'm another day farther away from 40. :-)

It’s a weird feeling for me, too, but someone I know told me age is just a number. We are always be young at heart.

ARGH! Don't remind me of how I still have to write the annual report for my organisation. It's not difficult... just tedious because we do so much every year that just listing it out with descriptions takes ages.

Woops! Certainly not my intention! I humbly offer good vibes as an apology, you go and write that boring report!

On Thanksgiving, I went to my sister's house with my dog for the 1st time since they got their new dog. My dog was so uncomfortable with him (cause the new dog isn't neutered plus it's new vs he had been around the neutered pit bull since he was a puppy). My sister kept getting annoyed & offended by his growling; saying how he was trying to run the other dog in his house and me & my mother were enabling him. She was like the dogs should just deal with it which would just mean Silky (my dog) being uncomfortable until he either did something (like snapped at the other dog since he was already uncomfortable) or submitting to the new dog (while again being uncomfortable with the dog) I just don't want to put Silky back in that situation even if it is enabling. It's stressful and anxiety inducing to me & Silky both and why do I have to deal with that? And it's extra annoying because my sister kept getting offended

She kept saying how she wouldn't have a dog that was vicious or that would harm her mother or sister

And it's not even ABOUT that! And then she's always like "let me finish; you're not listening to me"
It's just frustrating.

I don't want or plan to take Silky back there but then she called a couple of days ago to ask me to bring Silky over without my mother knowing

The Washington Post just published this article! It sure sounds like poor Silky will be happier not having to interact w the new dog for the time being. The new dog is possibly still adjusting, will mature later or maybe never be visit-able. You’re right that protecting Silky’s well-being is your first priority 👍🏼

You can take your dog to movies and bars. But does he want to go?
It’s tough leaving our dogs behind. But as more human-centric spaces open up to them, animal experts caution that some pups are simply happier at home.

That's what I'm saying!
My sister was like "nothing has happened yet" and "see, [Silky] wasn't doing anything until he saw [our mother] so that means she's the reason he's acting this way and it's like that's not even the point!
Silky is a shokie (shiz shu/yorkie mix) and her new dog is some kind of pitbull (I think). It's bigger than Silky and it's not neutered (neither of them are neutered).

Even if he wasn't growling when she wasn't around, doesn't mean he wasn't stressed and uncomfortable.

My mother does take Silky to the movies haha

Poor Silky! That sounds stressful. An un-neutered pitbull is a dog other dogs should never have to be around if either dog shows the slightest sign of stress or discomfort. It's not that pitbulls are more likely than other breeds to be aggressive, but they can do so much more damage if they are.

Also, no one asked, but here's a plea to not take Silky to the movies, ever, no matter how much your mom thinks it's OK. Silky and your mom may feel fine but I can guarantee you there are movie-goers who cherish theaters as one of the last few dog-free spaces and who will spend the entire movie stressed out about what the dog might do and when. Any dog can act out in some situations; that's going to be particularly disruptive if it happens in a movie theater, where there's no rewind button, no do-overs, limited exits, and no alternative if someone's dog ruins your experience except to leave and lose your money and time and enjoyment.

Do you watch the K-show DOGS ARE INCREDIBLE? It explains a lot of dog behaviors to owners and how to correct bad dog actions.

I do not understand the appeal of love polygons. Why would it be a fantasy to be in the center of one or one of the folks vying for that *one* person.

Seems like there's come kind of complex at play
(Argubly every relationship dynamic probably has some kind of complex at play haha)

It's just I personally hate the trope and yet it's such a feature in media.

Love polygons are essentially a cheap trick from lazy writers to boost viewers low self-esteem by giving them this rosy self-insert fantasy of multiple perfect admirers fighting over their affections. That must feel great, right? RIGHT?! Well, not really once you add even a bit of critical thinking into equation, but most genre consumers don't bother, ensuring the trope's immortality.

Haven't had spotify for long (less than a month) but my spotify wrapped told me my most listened genre is "korean soundtracks" lol.

It's been snowing for two days straight in my country. We haven't had this much snow in years. This really brings me in the mood for a winter-themed drama or movie. Just have to find a fitting one that i will actually like.

So it’s December and the Hallmark movies are in full swing but I have little to no desire to watch them. I am a hopeless romantic and I previously looked to Hallmark movies but loathe them after discovering k dramas in 2021. I challenge anyone to watch Crash Landing on You and then try to watch another poorly written, low quality production HM movie.

Indeed, after 3 years of watching k dramas and over 80 shows in every genre under my belt, I am thoroughly turned off from Hollywood and 98% of my viewing content is Korean or non American. The gratuitous sex, constant rehashing of old ideas, agenda laden productions (and I am a liberal) have all served to turn me off. My one wish is that Korean productions continue to retain their unique qualities as the international viewing audience grows.
