News bites: December 21, 2023

Lee Min-ki, Kwak Sun-young, Heo Sung-tae

  • ENA’s new crime-comedy Crash has reportedly confirmed casting, lining up Lee Min-ki (Behind Your Touch), Kwak Sun-young (Moving), and Heo Sung-tae (Bait) to be our trio of cops who protect the streets from traffic violations. That’s right, Truck of Doom, your days are numbered. The ticketing shenanigans are expected to begin early next year, with PD Park Joon-woo (Doctor Detective, Taxi Driver 1) attached to direct and writing by Oh Soo-jin. [Star News]

  • Production for The Price of Confession has gone back to the drawing board, with PD Lee Jung-hyo (Doona, Crash Landing on You) now taking the director’s mantle while scripts continue under filmmaker Kwon Jong-kwan (Proof of Innocence). The team is currently in discussions to release on an online streaming platform and is also courting Jeon Do-yeon (Crash Course in Romance) to headline the series. [Newsen]
  • Seo Ji-hye (My Perfect Stranger) has been added to the cast of JTBC’s A Prefabricated Family, joining Hwang In-yub (Why Her), Jung Chae-yeon (The Golden Spoon), and Bae Hyun-sung (Miraculous Brothers) in the lineup. The romance is slated to broadcast in 2024, with production led by PD Kim Seung-ho (Joseon Attorney, Twenty Five Twenty One) and writer Hong Shi-young. [Sports Kyunghyang]

  • Speaking of JTBC, the first poster has dropped for Queen of Divorce (previously Amazing Troubleshooter), where a lipstick wielding Lee Jia (Pandora: Beneath the Paradise) promotes her company’s services, promising to punish evil spouses. Along with legal advisor Kang Ki-young (The Uncanny Counter 2: Counter Punch), the duo will be taking on cases starting next month on January 31. [News1]
  • Back in Joseon times, a masked Honey Lee (One the Woman) flies to the aid of others in MBC’s latest teaser for Knight Flower. Also starring Lee Jong-won (The Golden Spoon), Kim Sang-joong (The Banker), and Lee Ki-woo (Miraculous Brothers), the action-comedy premieres on January 12 in the weekend slot. [MBC]
  • The promo train has taken off on SBS as well, releasing the eye-raising English title Flex x Cop (previously Chaebol x Detective), in addition to the first stills of our buddy cop leads, Ahn Bo-hyun (See You in My 19th Life) and Park Ji-hyun (Reborn Rich). With PD Kim Jae-hong (Revenant, Through the Darkness) at the helm and Kim Ba-da (My Name) writing, the series will be launching in January 2024. [SBS (1), (2)]

Wow, Ahn Bo-hyun looks good in a uniform. Also what does 'flex' mean in this content? I think Chaebol x Cop would have been a better title.

I’m assuming “flex” as in flexing one’s wealth? Like showing it off? I like the original title better too, but they usually shy away from putting actual Korean words in the English version. Oh well.

I’m in for Lee Min Ki. I’m hoping it does not clash with Dr Slump though.

It does seem like a rather stupid title change

It's still too soon to mention Lee Min-ki and Truck of Doom in the same paragraph.

Are we thinking of the same ToD/Lee Min-ki collision? I hope not.

The one in Shut Up! Flower Boy Band?

I remember that I knew that he was just a cameo, so it didn't surprise me so much and the scene itself made me remember Joe Black's one.

So much happening soon! With everything that’s releasing in January, I’m going to have to choose my live watches carefully. That’s my New Year’s Drama Resolution - choose carefully and don’t be afraid to drop or put shows on pause. But Queen of Divorce, Knight Flower, and Flex x Cop all sound like they could be fun, and I have to leave room for Doctor Slump too!

Best resolution, let's see how long we last. 🤣 Indeed we should concentrate only what resonates with us at the moment and cut out the needless noise around dramas which don't.

I don't think "Flex x Cop" is better than "Chaebol x Detective"... but okayy...

1 - looks fun, hopefully drama delivers in comedy.
6 - huh, not bad as well, PD alone got me excited. Who among the leads is chaebol - ABH? Bold of him to work with this writer again *evil laugh*

1. This sounds great, I hope it is a comedy.
2.The fact that Jeon Do Yeon was 2nd in mind for the this drama is WILD. I like Song Hye Kyo, but Jeon Do Yeon runs circles around her in terms of acting.
4. I really dislike the poster and the photoshop work, but I am looking forward to the drama.
5. HONEY LEE!!!!
6. I wish the actresses were allowed to gain weight for these roles because sometimes it is simply not believable that they passed the physical test to be cops.

"I wish the actresses were allowed to gain weight for these roles because sometimes it is simply not believable that they passed the physical test to be cops."

I have couple of words for this: Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo

She actually gained weight for the role, I remember her talking about it. It probably wasn't as obvious because she is tall, but she did gain about 15 or so pounds. To play the role she played, should she have gained more, absolutely, but she attempted it.

Kim Sun-A did it for My Name Is Kim Sam-soon. She took 8kg and refused to loose it after her character fell for the ML because for her, it wouldn't have been Sam-Soon anymore.

She wasn't credible in Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo even with the big and many clothes she was wearing 😅

I still remember fondly the chubby cheeks of Kim Sun-a. For me, those cheeks continue to be a character in itself. They way she always pouted about everything happening in the series and everything jerky the main character did was so adorable, lol

#6 - From PD of Revenant and Through the darkness - a definite watch and I am curious about Park Ji-hyun being a protagonist. In all her previous shows she played love to hate character.
#1 - Well, it will at least answer my question - do traffic cops exist in Korea?

2024...the year of the buddy cop dramas??? Seems likely given this news roundup. I mean, I guess that'll offer more opportunities to add serial killers all up in your plot 🤔😁

Yes, whenever @attiton calls, it behooves DB commentators to answer, if they want to retain their position in the royal court.
My thought is that it seems like the "buddies" here are each male and female partners, so in addition to chasing bad husbands, lowlife left ministers, and criminal masterminds, we will be teased with sexual tension, which likely will not ever resolve itself into a full fledged romance. Kdrama viewers know this type of relationship as "febromance."

Aw, snap!

As you can tell, I'm in full on 80s-slang mode today...I just wrote my final email before setting my OOO message, so that's epic.

I don't feel I run a royal court though--I leave that hard work to other Beanies who have held that status for years.

If I run anything it's a half-way house for disaffected, over-educated, painfully sarcastic, middle-aged people who have time enough on their hands to find "just the right gif," take cutting jabs at one another, rant about the physics of white delivery trucks and how tall people actually kiss short people, while still having the energy to enjoy ourselves a k-drama (or 5) of an evening...

4

@midnight You are more than welcome to take shelter Chez Seon-ha (say that five times fast!!!) at any time!

1

@attiton Ouch. When you spell it out like that, it sounds so much less awesome than my (our?) self-image as a polished, mature, thoughtful ... uh, where was I going with that? 🙃

My reaction to #1 was much more simplistically "(sigh) more cops." Even LMK can't reconcile me to the relentless glorification of policing in kdramas. I hope he's not going to be typecast as he moves into ahjussi roles.

3

@elinor Well, of course, you are our leading light of class, intelligence and elegance here Chez Seon-ha. We stand in awe of your beauty and hold you in the highest of esteem.

Of course, with friends like these...who needs enemies, amirite???

In the meantime, I'm gonna be thoroughly distracted by my own fantasies of Lee Min-ki in quality ajusshi roles. Sigh. I told you you're our favorite.

2

Well, I don't know what anybody else is doing, but I'm helping construct an online consumption community of critical practice, contributing my expertise in admiring the beauty of 50+ age kdrama actresses.

1

I see! And just who was the mastermind that coined "febromance"? Has to be @hacja eh?

1

@attiton

who have time enough on their hands

Or, ahem, make the time... by stealing from disagreeable jobs and chores... ahem. Anyways. I immediately fell in love with your half-way house!

1. Heo Sung-tae as a law-abiding, respectful cop? Hmmm, by the laws of dramaland, I don’t buy it. He has to secretly be behind those mysterious white trucks with a penchant for hitting all our observationally-challenged citizens. He’s also a police officer because… reasons. To spy on his enemy. I am obviously right.

2. Courting Jeon Do-yeon as a second option after Song Hye-kyo is crazy and makes me question the sanity of everyone involved in the casting department. Like, we are talking about the same Jeon Do-yeon who is an internationally acclaimed cinema icon who was the first ever Korean actor to win an acting award at Cannes, right??

3. This is apparently supposed to be an adaptation of the excellent cdrama Go Ahead, where I found the romance to be the least compelling aspect. So I find the choice to market it as a romance instead of a family drama a little concerning

4. Man, I wish I still loved Kang Ki-young as much as I did before the whole brownface thing.

5. I don’t even need to know what is show is. Give me Honey Lee in a sageuk and I will be there no matter what.

6. Park Ji-hyun in that haircut… yes please. The sapphics will be happy with this one. Even if the combination of cops + chaebols + terrible English title means I have to be forced to hit play with a gun to my head.

2. Does "gone back to the drawing board" sound like progress .

4. What is up with these weird drama names, phoo. Actually all along I thought that the Amazing Troubleshooter was KYY. 🤣 Well the new name clears that up. At least he's the ML.
5. Another senseless name change. Castle-but-not-a-novelist vibes.

Price of Confession is in production again?? wow, i wonder who the replacements will be.. Sim Na-Yeon would have been the screenwriter, she wrote (my favorite drama) Beyond Evil!! And Han Soo Hee & Song Hye Kyo would have been the leads!! I was so sad when all three dropped out of the project.

Honestly the 2024 line-up is so stacked with interesting shows. My thriller-loving heart is happy.
