My Demon: Episodes 9-10

A demon in love is a dangerous thing… after all, our hero is reaching outrageous levels of sentimentality! With our OTP finally in each other’s arms, and our heroine determined to seize happiness with both hands, the future is looking bright. But as ever, it’s not long before things go whirling out of control…

EPISODES 9-10

My Demon: Episodes 9-10

After a sensational kiss beneath the sprinklers, there’s no awkwardness left between our leads. Still gazing at each other with undisguised wonder, they move back to their apartment — and the bedroom. The next morning, Gu-won is determined to out-husband every husband ever to husband, or make everyone cringe trying. Do-hee suffers a veritable bombardment of couple’s meals, whilst learning firsthand that the devil has a soft spot for tandem bikes. Su-ahn, tailing them with a camera in the hopes of digging up dirt on Do-hee, learns what we’ve known all along: these two are offensively photogenic.

They’re also outrageously cute. In between staring at Do-hee with stars in his eyes, Gu-won muses that he’s grown unexpectedly fond of humanity. It’s like adopting one cat, then learning to care for all strays! Whilst vaguely indignant at this comparison, Do-hee has to admit that it’s an improvement on longhorn beetle. For her part? She reckons Gu-won is back to being his original self: guardian. Or rather, (sly grin) her guardian. When night falls, they slow-dance on the balcony to the assassin’s signature song, determined to strip it of any nasty associations. If I were Do-hee, I’m not sure I’d ever want to hear a note of it again — but I guess love conquers trauma?

Do-hee, who once thought happiness was a fairy tale — let alone love — is now fully committed to making the most of life. That means sacrifice. And so, it is with minimal regret that she signs a document to officially renounce her inheritance. Gu-won is less than thrilled; as far as he’s concerned, his wife deserves love, novelty breakfast platters, and unimaginable wealth! It’s all he can do to convince her to at least see the assassin’s face. But when Do-hee agrees, Gu-won’s teleportation powers… flicker. Nothing happens.

Do-hee has more important things on her mind. Namely — sitting down with Secretary Shin, and pouring a beer for them both! (Badly.) My journey, she declares, has come to an end — and letting go was easier than I thought. Overachiever that she is, Do-hee resolves to excel at cutting loose! This leads to both Do-hee and Secretary Shin, incandescently drunk, alternating between laughter and tears — whilst Gu-won and Bok-gyu deal with the aftermath. Gu-won gives Do-hee a romantic piggyback ride home, and Bok-gyu… uh, gets distracted by the moon before he can stop Secretary Shin from faceplanting. An attempt was made.

My Demon: Episodes 9-10

Meanwhile, the Wild Dogs continue to prove themselves enthusiastic labradors: their latest show of loyalty involves a deep clean of the Sunwol building. Sadly, their beloved leader is too busy smirking over the similarity between Deulgaepa (Wild Dogs) and Deulkkaepa (Perilla Seeds and Scallions) to praise their hard work. No worries — from now on, their name will be changed! To — uh, celebrate Korean cuisine! It takes little persuasion for them to redirect their efforts into tracking down our assassin. Armed with a police sketch, the newly-dubbed Perilla Seeds and Scallions go hurtling to the rescue. Granted, this mostly involves terrifying random bystanders into showing their faces, but what they lack in efficiency, they make up for in heart!

And also — in the plot twist of all time — results. Our gangsters-with-a-heart-of-gold point Gu-won directly to the culprit. But by the time the police arrive, it’s much too late. Earlier, the assassin agreed to meet with the enigmatic Abraxas at his theater hideout. Finally, the camera pans to the face of our leather-gloved mastermind… Noh-Suk-min! And he’s smiling. That wide, triangular leer of his will haunt my nightmares — but the assassin doesn’t live long enough to regret his life choices. Soon, Suk-min has him cornered, setting the abandoned dressing room ablaze. All that remains of our murderer-of-all-trades is a charred corpse… with the dagger that injured Gu-won embedded in his chest.

My Demon: Episodes 9-10

Gu-won takes this for what it is: a warning. Our homicidal friend clearly died because Gu-won saw his face — meaning Team Evil are aware of his powers. The bug in his office confirms his fears: there’s someone else behind it all. But there are worse revelations at hand. Every single clock in his collection has stopped. As he stumbles into the foyer, he sees scrolls spiraling through the air. Every single one of them burns into ashes before they hit the ground. His contracts have all come unraveled — and every deal he struck, undone.

Time for answers. He makes haste to Suk-nyeo, rudely shaking her awake. I see you’ve become completely human, she observes, with relish. He follows her down a surprisingly elaborate staircase, into a hidden bar with gambling tables. Here, to his shock, she is treated like royalty. Suspicions growing, Gu-won asks her if this is really an appropriate place to talk. With a tongue-in-cheek snap of her fingers, Suk-nyeo causes their surroundings to vanish — replacing them with a desert, a mountaintop, and a beach in quick succession. I can do everything you can, she assures him. After all, I gave you those powers.

Because, yes indeed, Suk-nyeo more commonly goes by a different name… God. Or, the universe. Time. That which is everywhere and everything. Still, even God has her limits — she doesn’t govern human choice. She simply sets the rules. And so, even if she wanted to, she couldn’t restore Gu-won’s powers; she didn’t take them away to begin with. Now that they are in the wrong body, they will continue to fade until they are gone completely. When they do, Gu-won will burn up and disappear. The only way to regain them is to kill their current possessor — Do-hee.

There’s only one thing worse than being told to murder the love of your life. Returning home, half an hour after being told to murder the love of your life, only to find her putting finishing touches on the world’s worst cake. He couldn’t have caught her looking more adorable. After debating writing “merry demon” on this expertly-crafted monstrosity, Do-hee feeds Gu-won a bite. Stoically, he insists it’s good. She tries some too, only to flinch; it’s chock-full of salt. Still, she adds cheerfully, if Gu-won likes it… there’s plenty left! (Honestly, I’m with our demon. I’d eat salt by the barrel for Do-hee!)

Later, mid-cuddle, Gu-won breaks the mood a bit by asking Do-hee what she’d do if the world were to end tomorrow. She shrugs. I’d stay at home with you, she says. Sleep in. Make silly jokes. We’d etch that last day into our memories. Impulsively, Gu-won suggests that they stay up all night — let tomorrow look after itself. And so, they watch a horror movie, throw popcorn at each other… and the chronically-overworked Do-hee passes out within the hour. The only thing that scares me, Gu-won admits as she dozes on his shoulder, is a world without you in it.

Gu-won has made up his mind — and God is the first to know. He intends to find a way for them both to survive. And what’s more? He’s willing to bet on his success. To Do-hee, he suggests that they visit Sokcho and immerse themselves in the water. Maybe if they try again under the full moon, his powers will return. Do-hee, blissfully unaware of the import, suggests they make a honeymoon of it. Meanwhile, our demon prepares for the worst. Certainly, he tells Bok-gyu, he doesn’t intend to die. There’s no question of that. But… just in case he does — Bok-gyu should look after Sunwol.

Alas, herein lies the plan’s weakest link. Whilst Gu-won tells Bok-gyu the full truth, he decides that Ga-young must be kept in the dark… and Bok-gyu is constitutionally incapable of lying with a sword at his throat. After learning of Gu-won’s death-defying scheme in record time, Ga-young calls on Do-hee. Her opening gambit is to hand our heroine several capsules of poison. I beg you, she says. Please save Gu-won. The only thing you can do for him is die.

Luckily, our hero intervenes. Acidly, he tells Ga-young he’d warned her not to cross the line. But Do-hee, fleeing the scene, gets confirmation from Bok-gyu: if Gu-won cannot save them both, he intends to die for her. But here, we take a sharp swerve away from noble idiocy! Do-hee wastes no time — she tells Gu-won that she refuses for either of them to die. They’ll work it out together, even if they have to take a thousand ice-cold baths in the sea! Gu-won interrupts her with a hug. And so, our heroes honeymoon in Sokcho, sharing a blanket on the beach. When you’re reborn as a demon, says Do-hee, I’ll make you a proper birthday cake.

My Demon: Episodes 9-10

Sadly, there are complications beyond our heroes’ control… and far beyond an unlabeled salt-shaker. As they snuggle on the beach, Suk-min (with his nightmarish monstrosity of a grin kept mercifully in check) is voted in as Chairman of Mirae. However, Do-kyung is MIA, allegedly due to illness. This, according to Su-ahn, is a frequent occurrence — a chilling admission, once we learn precisely why he’s absent. Turns out, Suk-min caught him with a replica of his own phone; his son has been spying on his messages. As punishment, he pressed a branding iron into Do-kyung’s forearms — whilst Se-ra wore headphones to drown out his screams. Prove your worth to me, Suk-min demanded.

Meanwhile, our second leads have found each other. Bitter meets bland, forming a team of unparalleled resentment! Ga-young reveals Gu-won’s true identity as demon to Seok-hoon, finally putting to rest any lingering vampire-related suspicions. However, she also claims that Gu-won specializes in manipulating humans — Do-hee most of all. Both are hot on our heroes’ heels.

Furthermore, Do-hee has her private doubts. In the evening, when she and Gu-won stop at a service station, she can’t help but glance at the poison Ga-young gave her. In the shop, she picks up a postcard. If we end up having to make a cruel choice, she writes, I’ll choose you. Please forgive me for condemning you to the same hell I went through. At this point, she receives a call from Seok-hoon. You’re in danger, he says — Gu-won intends to kill you. Do-hee refuses to take the bait, hanging up in glorious disdain.

Sadly, Seok-hoon is correct: Do-hee is in danger. Lurking in a nearby car, arms still covered in deep welts, is Da-kyung. Slamming the accelerator, he plows the car straight into the shop, shattering the window and sending Do-hee flying across the wreckage. Gas ignites. The entire building billows into flame. Ga-young seizes Gu-won before he can plunge in after her. If Do-hee dies, he’ll live — all he has to do is look the other way! Gu-won’s reply is blunt: I can’t live without her. With that, he walks straight into the fire.

Inside, it’s a mess of heat and shattered glass. Do-hee lies wounded. Scarcely able to breathe, Gu-won collapses, still inching his way forward. But just as his eyes flicker shut, he manages to brush Do-hee’s wrist. Suddenly — miraculously — the cross begins to glow. Seok-hoon and Ga-young watch astounded as two figures emerge from the wreck. Do-hee is prone in Gu-won’s arms, both of them without a scratch. As Gu-won places Do-hee gently down, her eyelids flicker. She stirs. Gu-won looks down at her, face brimming with emotion… the tattoo now emblazoned on his wrist.

My Demon: Episodes 9-10

Now that’s how you write a love story! Our leads’ relationship has been so beautifully believable throughout, and all the more so this week. When these two are being cute and romantic, they still feel so distinct, and entirely like themselves. The actors totally sold it; they seemed utterly natural together, without any contrived awkwardness. Kim Yoo-jung is pure sunshine; the way she plays Do-hee’s delight at being in love makes my heart melt. Meanwhile, Song Kang is endearing one second, and resolute the next — he handles the shift with such flair.

As ever, I’m sad that Ga-young remains two-dimensional. She feels like a character with potential for depth, but alas, her only function is to be a roadblock for our protagonists. Still, this show remains so fun that I can’t stay mad at it for long. We’re going to some interesting places plot-wise! I like the idea of a gambling god — one who sets the rules, but lets chance dictate the outcome. It’s the perfect battleground for our risk-taking heroes. With six episodes to go, it still feels like there’s ample material to cover, and I love that the writers haven’t been afraid to let the romantic relationship breathe a bit, instead of saving the confessions for last minute. Here’s hoping that when we delve into our heroes’ past lives, the writing remains as spiky and imaginative.

"Our leads’ relationship has been so beautifully believable throughout, and all the more so this week" - yes yes and YES! So with you on everything you've said @alathe, we're on the same wavelength!! Another beautiful week that had some fluffy sweet but also angsty melodramatic love sequences 💕 They're already so solid, I don't even mind if we have noble idiocy waiting for us around the corner for whatever reason because we've two solid two episodes of the leads being the cutest couple in existence.

The 'one has got to die' thing I saw coming from a mile away because it's basically a staple of the genre - almost every fantasy show I can think of has had some iteration of it (Doom, Goblin, Tail of Nine Tailed, Roommate is a Gumiho, Angel's Last Mission, Heartbeat, Twilight!) because there has to be some sort of reckoning with an OTP that goes 'against the rules' (i.e. human & non human). So I was nervous at the end of episode 9 but I trusted the writing team - and episode 10 proved to me that I was right in placing my trust in them 👏 I love how all plot-lines sort of converged at that gas station there; Ga-young & Seok-hoon doing their second lead thing, Seok-hoon finding out Ga-young's agenda, Da-kyung being found out by his dad and also snapping, Seok-hoon confirming the truth about Gu-won's true identity as well as his relationship with Do-hee AND of course, the OTP saving each other. On that note, the parallel between Gu-won saving Do-hee and Do-hee saving Gu-won (!!!fire & water!!!) was 🫶👌✨

Is this show completely flawless? Of course not - as you pointed out as well alathe, I wish Ga-young wasn't so two dimensional but honestly it's such a small qualm amongst a sea of green ticks so I don't even really care 🤷‍♀️

Also the WILD DOGS! Or should I say, Perilla Leaf Seeds & Scallions gang?! Delivered yet again this week, and same with the office workers - I don't even know if that drink bit was PPL but it was great advertising either way.

Same! He got less airtime last week so this week was a bit of a 'you're scary' mixed with 'can you move along now pls' moment but like Asha said I am less stressed now that Guwon is back to full power!

I can't tell you how much I *adore* this series which has been such a delightful surprise - they keep throwing twists and turns at the viewer and ramping it up story-wise.

And Ms. Wireless Charger and Mr Pokemon's chemistry has never faltered - it just kept building and it's off-the-charts now. I never was a fan of Song Kang but this drama may well have changed my mind regarding his acting chops.

it's funny because there's a lot about Song Kang's acting that still gives me pause - his dialogue delivery skills need a LOT of work - but episode 10 gave me a glimmer of hope because I didn't cringe once while watching him. The cringe was significantly down in previous episodes too, wayyy down from ep 1-4.

I still don't have any confidence that he can carry a drama or even a scene without a costar who's much stronger in the acting department to anchor it (in this case, Kim Yoo-jung and in his and Secretary Bok-gyu's scenes, Heo Jeong-do) BUT he's not completely hopeless either. He's pretty decent at body language/the more physical aspects of a scene, and I even think he's getting better at expressions though we will see how he does in the sageuk scenes.

I don't think I've watched any recent Cha Eun-woo dramas lol but going by the rep alone....I hope so! He's good at selling romance onscreen (Song Kang I mean) which is a necessary skill if you're in a romcom.

That said, being pretty isn't enough to make an actor, and frankly I think they benefit from the fact that most of the bigger-name male actors in their age cohort are quite weak in the acting department compared to actors in that same age range from the 2010s (think Kim Soo-hyun, Kang Ha-neul, Lee Jong-seok, Kim Woo-bin etc). Boyo has a long, LONG way to go if he wants to catch up to where those guys' skills were at age 25.

Kang Ha-Neul is an absolutely beast of an actor - throw anything at him and he morphs into that character.

I'm warming up to Lee Jong-Suk as well - he started his career as a model but he has serious acting chops + a knack for choosing excellent dramas for his repertoire.

These episodes were slower but I think it kinda made sense to make the couple stronger. After all, "I'm ready to die for you" just after one kiss would have been a little bit exaggerated. But they spent a lot of time together now.

I'm curious how Do-Hee will get her inheritance back.

Madame Ju had secrets and clearly she failed with her son, but he seems to have psychopath tendencies...

I'm happy that Seok-hoon is the not the bad guy, I hope he won't do anything stupid. He saw Gu-Won saving Do-Hee after all. And he trusted the wrong person...

Yes to Seok-hoon in the clear, GAH to psychopath dad being behind all this. No wonder Madam Gu insisted on sending him to jail instead of bailing him out, when he had that “car accident” in the past. She knew exactly who he was. Then again it’s a bit surprising she didn’t take further measures to ensure he wouldn’t gain power in the company after her demise. I would’ve tried to make my succession fool proof against his claims, and would have removed him from his job ages ago, so no one would have selected him as potential chairman… 😬 But I digress, this is dramaland logic after all! 😂

Episode 10 sure felt quickly paced, no? Everything (the demon powers & finding the murderer) was wrapped up so to speak, now only the inheritance/succession part is left 🤔 I wonder how they will use that to fill 6 more episodes. 😅

Totally with you on feeling that the slower pace was needed to make the couple stronger! Nice balance also between the cute fluff and then the "I'd die for you". As you rightly pointed out, the latter would've felt out of place or rushed if we hadn't seen them spending so much time together & also being a love-sick couple together in recent eps.

Waking up to this was a pleasant surprise. Thank you, alathe. I am so happy to finally be early to a "My Demon" recap.

To be honest, I was so ready to get another Heartbeat. Phew.

Highlights:
1. That whole drunk scene was just gold. I don't know the name of the actress that plays Secretary Shin, but I love her so much here. Her, screaming in the office store in embarrassment.... don't drink too much, kids. I am still waiting for the Park-Shin ship to sail.
2. The kiss and everything after. I knew Song Kang would deliver. I am also impressed by Kim Yoo jung. By the way, I love her hair SO much. I feel like K-drama female leads rarely ever have hair that long. Is it just me?
3. The Wild Dog gang, sorry I mean Perilla Leaf Seeds and Scallions gang. They are almost too loyal. Cleaning up the Sunwol Foundation and terrifying the employees in the process. With followers like these, who needs haters. They get A+ for effort, though.

Other things:
1. JIN GA YOUNG: I can't believe she gave DoDoHee poison while begging her to kill herself..............Meanwhile when Jung gu won walked into the fire, she didn't follow him. I thought she was all about sacrifice. 😒 Maybe Seok Hoon will finally calm down.
2. NOH SUK MIN: I never thought Do Gyeong would be the killer because he has always been too prone to fits of anger. The killer had to be someone calm enough to swap pills in the middle of the night. So Noh Suk Min makes sense. This man is seriously so creepy and him branding his son......No wonder his wife always looks like she wants to run.

Can't wait for next week's episodes.

re: 2, I was internally going "yesss, get it Do Dohee!!!!" the whole time. Tastefully shot, kept the mood going (these kids are a married couple in love, do we expect them not to take it to the bedroom after that?) and it's nice to see a female lead in a network kdrama being allowed to look like she wants her man too.
Also agreed on the hair, it's a length and style that looks very luxurious, also its simplicity - no fringe, no funky layers, straight traditional black - looks like the unbound version of the kind of hair that sageuk heroines have? Perfect for the character of a young chaebol heiress.

Thanks, @alathe! Yes, the relationship has been built up well and both actors have done a nicely nuanced job of showing their developing, seesawing emotions - unlike a couple of other current shows where *snap* they’re in love, without showing us enough of how or why. I was thinking back to the moment in episode 4, right before the tango, when DH angrily says to GW "I'm human. I’m a person with emotions, not just a charger for ..." then turns and he's not there. But I'd bet he hears her.

So the tattoo-swap mechanism appears to be both being willing to die to save the other and consciously acting on that willingness. I had expected to see a bit more of the Joseon backstory (can’t call it past life, because GW is still living the same one) by now to show how he got it in the first place, but there’s 6 episodes to go. Maybe that past-life story will also add some dimension to Ga-young, because she’s monotonous and tiresome.

Sister Su-ahn, desperately trying to think her way out of a wet paper bag while her horrid children riot, continues to be my favorite family member - not that there are any great choices. Looks like brother Suk-min has literally become a devil; who wants to place a bet (with God) that he’s sold his soul for power either in this life or a past one?

It’s going to be tough to wait two weeks for more of this diabolically delicious nonsense - and for the next set of ah-mazing outfits on the leads.

How did the first tattoo swap occur? Did it follow your articulated swap-mech? (I’m dipping in and out of this drama so missing a fair bit).
And btw, Suahn’s Francophile pretensions and murdering the French language are yet another trope albeit not as frequently used/abused in KDs.

The first swap - from him to her - happens when they fall into the Water of Immeasurable Depth. He takes the brunt of the fall, and then sinks deeper with the Closed Eyes of Instantaneous Drowning. She swims down to save him while thinking "I have to let go of him if I want to live" - and then keeps trying to rescue him until she loses consciousness and her grip on him. It was a nice parallel that, as @lapislazulii pointed out, she saves him from water and he saves her from fire.

I have the impression that the "speaking French" trope is a bit of a fad recently. PariSu-ahn sounds like she's speaking Vogon.

As everyone's worked out by now, the tattoo swap seems to be driven by one of them risking their life to save the other, with the bonus involvement of elements (water for Dohee, fire for Guwon) and after actively casting aside chances to save themselves. That seems to be the override that causes the tattoo transfer.

As of ep 10 Gu-won is left with options as follows:
a) Dohee (who has his tattoo) dies before the full moon is done and he gets his tattoo back to continue his demon unlife
b) Dohee lives, with his tattoo still on her, and he flames out of existence/dies because he hasn't got his tattoo or powers in his own body

but there's a third option which is what Guwon chose
c) trigger a tattoo transfer back from Dohee to Guwon while she's still alive (these kids thought they could do it by replicating the physical conditions of the first tattoo transfer i.e. midnight near-drowning, turns out that that wasn't the bit they had to replicate) which sidesteps the need for either of them to die - Guwon gets his powers back, Dohee just gets the tattoo off her and stays alive.

PariSu-ahn playing paparazzi to our happy couple was comedy gold, though. I wouldn't mind a few more episodes of her gnashing her teeth while failing to get a bad angle on either Dohee or Guwon, Lee Yoon-ji is so effortlessly funny.

It looks like in the previews that Seok-hoon is going to make a "deal with the devil" to try to get Do-hee back. The only thing I didn't like about the Suk-min as devil development was the way they put a cigarette PPL in there, as the Korean drama industry continues its own deal with the devil.

can’t believe anyone and I mean anyone would confuse sugar with salt

um, this is actually close to real life, not that I would personally know or anything (ok, I admit it. as a rookie baker, powdered sugar looks basically identical to salt, they came in near-identical packages and I ended up putting half a cupful in a pavlova base- inedible, of course)

It is--Black Devil brand. It apparently is particularly popular among teen smokers, which explains why they want the PPL--get them hooked early, and its much harder to kick the habit. Of course they'll die sooner--but that's not a concern of the cigarette industry.

@alathe thanks again for another great recap.
I thought Ep 10 would end on a cliffhanger with both the leads in water, but thankfully the writer wrapped up the tattoo/demon's fading power issue. I still do not think we are completely done with this storyline because the ultimate goal seems to be a set up for him to turn human.

Ep 9. had a slow pace and as much as I enjoyed the OTP and am willing to watch hours of them just be pretty, I just am not interested in the chaebol stuff and the villain. Noh Suk Min is creepy, but he is not exciting. I don't really feel the danger from or cleverness in his character. Maybe, it is the writing or acting or both, but instead of adding salt to the cake, the writer/director should have added them to the villain and the bland second leads.

Thank you alathe for your early and fabulous recap.
I give this show my bean of squee as there were quite a few wonderful moments in these episodes between the leads.
It has been really lovely to watch the characters evolve and communicate.
Like alathe mentioned it all seems so natural as the actors are very comfortable with one another, there is no awkwardness between them and the falling in love seems so real.
I love that the FL is proactive when obstacles are thrown in her way and she doesn’t mess around doing silly things.
The ML is also doing a fantastic job creating the right balance with his character. I haven't seen him in anything else but will definitely try another of his shows.
I’m not interested in all the family politics and wish we could skip over it quickly. There has been an ‘evil family member’ trend this year that has been overdone on too many shows so they loose their impact.
These episodes reminded me a lot of Goblin and I only hope that they can keep up the great work for the rest of the run for the show to become another classic.
Do Do hee’s secretary and her red soled high heels suit her character so well.

So my guess that SukMin's wife is our main villain turned out wrong. I got right that the son was indeed spying on the parent by mirroring their phone.

I'm glad the 'losing his powers' plot wasn't stretched till the end. I would any day take a incorrigible demon over a weak one. Onwards to DoHee getting her inheritance and GuWon getting his human memories back!

Now that’s how you write a love story!

Absolutely @alathe! As soon as the car went a-crashing in, I was ready for the reversed salvation and it didn't fail to deliver. Not a moment's hesitation from Gu-won to lay down his life for hers and the absolute trust communicated when they looked at each other after Do-hee woke up. That was possibly my squee moment for 2023...

"The next morning, Gu-won is determined to out-husband every husband ever to husband, or make everyone cringe trying."

He's new at this. A+ in effort.

Ga-young, let her attachment and emotions get the best of her. She really wanted to save him at all costs, but her efforts were misguided because she didn't know the full picture of the situation or how to fix it.

Seok-hoon-I hope he now sees that Gu-won is truly on team Do-Hee and not out to hurt her like he has been led to believe. He is the perfect and only person with the ability to infiltrate that evil family and cause all sorts of trouble as a true ally of our couple.

Thank you so much for your recap ❤️❤️.
I adore my beautiful funny and loving couple moments and rewatched those segments a lot.The transitions interrupted the emotional rise or intensity in certain scenes, but maybe that’s just me. Gnat-young is insufferable and unhinged 🤬; well I won’t be surprised if her past self caused the death of Wolshim (Do-Hee). Let us all remember that Seo Hoon and Gnat Young declare how they “love” one of our beautiful couple but did nothing;zero attempt to enter the building to save either Gu Won or Do-Hee whereas Gu Won (while in despair) had to shove the annoying Gnat Young outta the way so he can actively and selflessly save his wife by entering the inferno. I swear it looked like Gu Won was teary with happiness that he was able to save Do-Hee during the final scene.
Thanks to the preview Yi-SUN & WOLsim as in the Sunwol Foundation

She's been pretty clear that she makes the rules but does not make the choices, but yes, she seems indifferent to the consequences of those choices. Her glee is directed more at humans' delusions that they could beat the rules of the game, though, than at their subsequent suffering.

I liked the sly reference to Einstein's statement that "God does not play dice with the universe."

I liked the portrayal of god as an unhoused woman. That was a nice touch. Also, Cha Chung Hwa is a great character actress. I recognized her from Hometown Cha Cha Cha and Crash Landing on You.

However, I have to say, I don't get the rules of the game. How exactly did the demon win out? Self-sacrifice? Then what did rolling the dice have to do with it?

Obviously I was deeply disappointed because I was watching the show as an intellectual exercise, to see how two beautiful people gazing at each other for extended periods of time would effect the passage of time and perception of cinematic space.

Depends on what kind of Christians you are talking about. Most Conservative Christians in the U.S. today glory in a vengeful God.

It's really horrible to be lumped together with the worst of those you have some sort of identity in common with, whether it be religious, national or whatever.
It may not be the majority of American Christians ... but it does seem there is a lot of self righteous condemnation of others and racism connected to a politically strong fraction of conservative Christians in the US.
Personally, I get very hurt and and angry when I am "called out" for opinions that I wouldn't even call Christian, but that (the opinions) does a lot of harm especially in the US.
Dumb atheists ( #NotAllAtheists ) accuse me first of agreeing with hateful fundamentalists, and then they say I am cherry-picking when I say the Bible is obviously, as a fact, historically, not written by God, and you have to use your brain and your heart too, when you read it.
It's like mansplaining, this insistence that they know what defines a Christian better than I do myself. Well, what I am saying here is that I fully understand the frustration of being judged by the evil deeds of others, but also, that there actually *is* a large group of harmful petty citizens who call their narrowmindedness "Christian" and who are the root of the prejudice other, kinder Christians meet.
(Here at Christmas it hurts extra, because I want to sing my favourite hymns, but some of my dear ones associate those hymns with the prejudice and hate that ruin the life of some of their friends, especially online friends.)

It’s something of an assumption to posit a Christian eschatology.
Korea has more than its share of different religions throughout its history, and many Kdramas adopt a syncretic approach (not unknown within Korean society).
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syncretism

This is probably not the venue to get into an argument about the US approach to religion (though it’s fair to say that Korean religion is far from uninfluenced by that of the US).

Ga-young Hit the new low for second female leads. It’s one thing to obsess over the male lead, to feel entitled, to cross the line, decide for the male lead etc, but handing over poison was new!! Really?? How was she ok with asking someone to just take poison and die?? She needs to be kicked to the curb.

I thought episode 9 was too draggy. I don’t mind OTP scenes but without much plot movement it just felt boring after a point. Ep 10 on the other hand was amazing.

I am so relieved that the elder Oppa is the devil. A reveal at this point seems right and no stress. I worried unnecessarily about the 2ML.

I wonder where the show will go from here!!
But we got our demon powers back!! YAYYYY! Together they are now going to be more awesome! Power couple indeed!

Is the son dead?? are we back to chaebolism and power struggle? So is the demon going to protect the humans from the devil chairman??

The romantic scenes between the leads was great. But sorry, I didn’t think the drinking scenes were cute. It wasn’t funny, the acting was OTT and it didn’t move the story forward. Maybe because I’ve seen so many of them recently (thanks welcome to samldalri) that I’ve had enough. The only good thing about it was Gu Won’s expression and attitude.
As bad as he was, psoriasis guys end was horrifying.

“Bitter meets bland” almost makes me want to invent a cocktail called The Second Lead if it didn’t sound so terrifically unappealing. Still, it’s a good name. Maybe it could be a riff on a Last Word?

Anyway! I suspected that the tattoo transfer had more to do with Do-hee’s sacrifice for Gu-won and less to do with the phases of the moon or location, but what I loved about these parallel scenes is that hers happened in the water and his happened in the fire. It’s all very them, and I am elated at how well they are keeping up the opposites-but-equals motif.

I found Ga-young slightly more interesting this week, when she said that what she liked about Go-won is his lack of humanity. It’s very telling that she found his self-interested, empathy-less deal-making refreshing compared to humans, and it makes me able to imagine how she ended up the way she is. No sympathy for Seok-hoon though! He’s going the classic gaslighting route (“You can’t possibly know what’s best for you!”) after doing absolutely nothing about his crush for years. *yawn* As far as I’m concerned, the farther he goes down the evil road, the more interesting he will be.

I’m so glad our leads straight-up ignored him so far! Literally everyone, including god, was telling them that they couldn’t pull this off but as ever they have all underestimated what an amazing couple we have on our hands. Not that I think we’re totally out of the woods yet, but if the next episode features an adorable told-you-so dance I will watch it on repeat.

Yes with you on being like Seok-hoon will become more interesting if he gives into the dark side and channels his SML toxic traits in there!! I can't tell if he looks like he's joining Devil Chairman's side out of genuineness or for real - I hope it's the later.

Being friendly, supportive and fun over the years got him nowhere and I suspect as long as there was no other man in the picture he thought being dependable would eventually win her over, but then ... our changeable Demon appears with all his various moods and erratic behaviour and not only takes her away almost instantly, he marries her.

No More Mr. Nice Guy. Because, what would be the point? He didn't win, he can't win, so the only thing left is to shake her confidence in Gu-won which he has failed dismally to do. In fact, despite being a Demon in peril, Gu-won chose to walk through fire to bring her back. Beat that!

Once again, he can't, so it will be interesting to see what his next move will be. He needs to get away from the influence of Ga-young who is so toxic she makes him look desperate and needy just by standing next to him.

Our two leads have learned they only need to depend on each other. No mere human can ruin them because they defy every attempt in order to stay together and it has worked. As the wheel is now spinning it just remains to see where fate lands. And as every tarot reader knows, it doesn't matter if your fortunes go up or down, it's how you react to it that counts.

I mean, it was never going to happen for Seok-hoon - Do-hee saw him as an older brother figure and actual family (which he legally is, even if they both know they aren't blood related this isn't like Pinocchio where the leads went along with the fiction of being "uncle" and "niece" to humour an old man, Dohee does see at least Madame Ju and Seok-hoon as actual family to her). She's 28, he could have spoken up about his feelings for her any time in the last half decade but chose not to and then wants to throw his toys out of the pram because Do-hee dares to have a man in her life who isn't him.

and honestly, why wouldn't she? Gu-won has 0 pretensions with Do-hee, she needed him for a contract marriage anyway (wouldn't want to involve a guy she actually cared for at the time in that), also protection from her crazy family and the killer (he has superpowers). It happened to be a bonus that they fell in love, Seok-hoon's surface problem is that Gu-won is a demon but I think he'd have been as interfering even if Do-hee had married a regular human, though if Madame Ju was still alive he wouldn't have dared to do it openly.

Alathe...thanks, a great recap of a good show, with a stand-out couple. Enjoying it for their love sparkles, as well as their hot sparks, and the way they 'mostly' collaborate in deciding their fate together. I was worried when she was writing the postcard that both of them would bail on each other; that she would leave the card and take the poison, or he would jump in the car and head for a deep dive into the ocean alone. The pre-accident scene with Bad Dad and Sick Son was horrible, especially seeing the the Mom put on her headsets to block out the sounds of her son's screams. Ugh. As for the fire scene, maybe this is too small too mention, but I was taken out of the drama a bit by the pacing. Gu Won's slow stilted walk into the building was frustrating to watch, almost as if the show had shifted to slow motion. I wanted him to 'dash to her aid'. Yes likely it was safer to enter slowly, but when you're in love, 'full speed ahead' in spite of the danger would seem more normal for him. Same when he fell after being hit by a falling timber & collapsed 'just' close enough to reach for her hand. At that point I was aware of the writer's presence in the scene, trying to make things look like coincidence when he had to grope haltiingly for her hand; but I think we all knew this scene was clearly laid out so he would touch 'the tattoo'. I just remember thinking that I shouldn't be wondering why the writer wrote it that way and it shifted me away momentarily from the scene. A tiny flaw, but just enough to create a small mind gap before I was flooded with relief when he carried her out of the building. Now that our handsome demon has taken a shot with the dice of fate, I wonder if it will be him or Do-hee that makes the next toss with 'God-lady' about their future, or maybe even a visit to their past? Either direction would be fun.
