Perfect Marriage Revenge: Episodes 3-4
by missvictrix
Wheeee what a ride! As new complications and antagonists (who are we kidding, they’re villains) appear on stage, our heroine must exercise all of her gumption. But can she trust her contract soon-to-be-husband? And can she win over some crucial allies? Yes. Yes she can.
EPISODES 3-4
Wow, I don’t think I’ve enjoyed a cracktastic time like this since the Taiwanese drama Behind Your Smile — we’ve got the same levels of cheesiness, drama, villainy, romance, and wacky plot here, all prettied up in the gift wrap of pure enjoyment. Seriously, I wish all dramas were this fun.
We open with a replay of our OTP’s dramatic first kiss, and when the photos are leaked online via a portal that’s impossible to squash (unlike the earlier reports), Yi-joo realizes that the ultra-romantic moment was for the press. But really, it was also just epic and I firmly believe Do-gook was 100% on board. After all, in his own words, he’s “a man who produces outcomes,” and we get to see him take the lead with his engagement, his family issues, and his company. Do-gook is a great character because while he’s a businessman through and through, he’s also enjoying this “romance” with Yi-joo to no end. Case in point: their base camp.
Do-gook’s right-hand man and brother-in-law BYUN JAE-HO (Lee Myung-hoon) delivers Yi-joo by request to a cozy townhouse doorstep. And who’s inside but Do-gook, looking exceptionally handsome in the kitchen, delivering Yi-joo high-protein coffee PPL, and cooking them dinner. It’s not until they sit down to eat together that they put their marriage contract to paper, and the fact that they’re doing this all smiley over abalone risotto definitely makes it the most fun contract marriage I have ever encountered. Usually, there’s reluctance and antagonism. Here, it’s all co-strategizing and camaraderie. It’s also important to note that Yi-joo comes to trust him enough to eat the food he’s made — and he’s cognizant enough to always taste test for her.
They’ll need a base camp, says Do-gook – and what do you know, that’s exactly where they are. He says it’ll be a place for them to discuss strategies, as well as a place to rest after battle, and the dialogue in this scene has me grinning from ear to ear.
Do-gook leads Yi-joo around by her hand and gives her a tour. The place is all decked out with “safe” food wrapped in plastic, arcade games, a PPL massage chair, and two separate bedrooms. Hers is more beautiful than the “prison” she knew at home, and his? Well, he says, she shouldn’t go in there if she misses him because he’ll be staying at the hotel. LOL, his flirting kills me. Then Do-gook goes a step further and gives her a key fob to the house. They semi-joke about how they’ve graduated from a hotel key card to a house key, and Do-gook says he decided to bet his life on her when she used that hotel key. Mama mia!
But it can’t be all prince charming and damsel in distress desperately attempting to turn over her new villain leaf. So, we’ve got loads of bureaucratic conflict by way of their families. Yi-joo is endlessly mocked by her mother (still), but she has a plan. First, she figures out how to get her weird grandfather’s approval. Her father’s support is easy, since he’s seeing dollar signs in his sleep. Then, she finds a way to insert herself into the inner circle of Do-gook’s mom, CHA YEON-HWA (Lee Mi-sook with a beehive to die for) by way of cooking classes.
This leads to a rather unpleasant confrontation between Yeon-hwa, Yoo-ra, and Yi-joo, where Yeon-hwa thinks it’s only right for Yi-joo to give up Do-gook to her younger sister since she knew him first (talk about treating someone like personal property!). But in the end, the man himself shows up by coincidence, whisks Yi-joo away, and Yeon-hwa ends up charmed by the entire thing. In fact, all it takes is one family meeting for her to be firmly Team Yi-joo, and this battle is way more fun than it should be.
Behind the scenes, Yeon-hwa tells Yi-joo she’ll approve of their marriage if she can get Do-gook back working at Taeja Group, so Yi-joo has a new task on her hands that’s going to prove more difficult than she imagines. But before she can get to that and figure out what’s going on with Do-gook and his hyung, she’s got to expose Mom’s fraudulent painting scheme and prevent that whole thing from blowing up in her face down the road. This is done with graceful efficacy during… the first meeting of both families.
Said meeting is delightfully awkward, and it made me appreciate even more the family ensemble nature of this drama. During the meeting, Mom’s dislike of her own adopted daughter is wide out for all to see. To their credit (and my delight), Do-gook’s family is aghast at how they are seeing Yi-joo being demeaned, and every time the power shifts in Yi-joo’s direction, Mom only gets more awful.
It also turns out to be the perfect opportunity for Yi-joo to offhandedly mention the copies of masterpieces she paints, which her mother is so kind as to “donate” so needy people can enjoy the replica art. Then, one on one, she exposes her knowledge of the whole scheme to Mom. This was a satisfying standoff, but perhaps a tad anticlimactic? If that’s all it takes to destroy that scheme (and it seems like it is, since Mom returns all the funds and buries all traces), I guess there’s more mayhem to come with those two because it was not enough to feel like our undead heroine was properly vindicated.
With the marriage public and approved, Yoo-ra really starts to lose her sh!t. Mom’s schemes aren’t enough for her anymore, so she starts her own — like collaborating with Se-hyuk to stage photos with Yi-joo to plant doubt in Do-gook (#FAIL), or propositioning Do-gook at his favorite bar when he’s enjoying some solo brooding time (#FAIL). But it’s not until Do-gook tells her “I know why you’re so obsessed with me” and calls Yoo-ra out on her superiority complex towards Yi-joo that she resorts to her next plan: a dramatic sleeping pill OD, which I can’t take seriously coming from her. She’s fine, btw.
Now let’s shift the lens to our hero, who I flat-out adore. We get to see him more in action this week, both at work and with his hyung. His entire company is aghast when they realize his fiancée was actually the fiancée of Chief of Staff Se-hyuk about five minutes ago, but Do-gook makes short work of Se-hyuk’s ire and I live for this exchange. There’s literally no contest here.
Do-gook’s facing some repercussions with a recent contract for his interiors business, though, so he does what he’s seemingly quite good at, and takes the bull by the horns. And this particular bull is a stakeholder meeting at the redevelopment project that Taeja Group is in charge of, lead by his hyung SEO JUNG-WOOK (Kang Shin-hyo).
In a very public setting where nothing can be refuted and appearances matter more than anything, Do-gook makes short work of the entire situation and comes out on top. He doesn’t exactly exactly give Jung-wook a dressing down, but it’s enough to bring out the animosity between them. Something to do with a boating accident, and Jung-wook’s limp…
The drama teases us into entertaining the possibility that Do-gook is responsible for his brother’s accident, but we know better. I mean, this is the guy that brought Yi-joo back to “base camp,” and gave her a beer to get her to lighten up before they discussed acting like they were actually in love.
Indeed, Do-gook seems to use every possible opportunity to fluster Yi-joo – and hint at this sincere intentions — and I’m here for it. He even delivers a “pretend” confession to her along the lines of: You don’t know how much I love you or when I first fell for you. And he might laugh it off, but the plot flags are waving dramatically. The slow reveal of this romance’s true genesis is so fun. Wanna bet he knew her from the orphanage somehow?
It gets even better when Do-gook pops over to base camp one night and makes ramyun for them. Do-gook not only uses the good old “let me stand behind you and reach that thing you can’t reach” method, but he also taste tests (or attempts to) the monolithic brownie she made at the cooking class. (Aside: the fact that the camera stuck around long enough for us to watch him spit it into the garbage made me love this drama even more.)
But things get a tad more serious over ramyun when Yi-joo mentions she’s not really moving in all the way since it’s such a temporary situation. This makes Do-gook visibly depressed, and he poses a question to Yi-joo: What if I wanted a real marriage? While the appropriate response here would be “Hell yes, where do I sign for that instead,” Yi-joo draws a boundary between them using shortage of time as an excuse, and asks him to respect it. (This is two-fold for her, referencing their one-year contract, but really meaning the death date stamped on her wrist. This exchange also leads to Do-gook’s sad whiskey brooding, where Yoo-ra turns up with a hotel key card.)
But that line Yi-joo has put between her and Do-gook might not last long. As fate would have it, Jung-wook is now entering his villain era as well. He’s ready to declare war against Do-gook, so he invites Yi-joo out to meet him alone at a fancy restaurant on the water. Then, he calls Do-gook to taunt him about it. It doesn’t take Do-gook long to figure out what’s up, but there’s one major problem here: entry to the restaurant requires walking on a dock across the water… and it just so happens our hero has some serious PTSD around water.
We watch Do-gook have a full-fledged panic attack at the literal dividing line between solid ground and dock, and flashbacks tells us that the accident with his hyung was much more traumatic for him than we realize. Likely, he was the true victim here. Regardless, it’s an epic hero moment, for every hero must have his tragic flaw — and this one comes at the pitch-perfect moment when Do-gook’s brother has just been elevated to fully-activated antagonist. And it also gives Do-gook the perfect impasse, as protecting Yi-joo collides with his own trauma, and he’s stuck (literally and figuratively), unable to advance. Lucky for Do-gook, Yi-joo spots him and sees him struggling to breathe. She runs over to help him just before he passes out on her to the roll of our credits.
Boy, this drama is ridiculously fun, and the low production budget makes me love it even more — almost with a protective sort of love. Don’t mock my show and it’s terrible sound editing, where the glug of beer is outrageously loud and the sound of people walking in high heels is deafening. Don’t mock the convenient cousin-reporter who exists purely to give crucial information to our heroine. Don’t mock the acting, or the slightly pathetic sets. And above all, don’t mock my larger-than-life hero. Because any hero who’s in the middle of a panic attack that drops him to his knees but still takes the opportunity for a flirty quip — well, that’s my kind of hero.

What to say, what to say...there's talk over on the ratings post for this week that Perfect Marriage Review is headed for cult status. Why not, indeed!! Thanks again @missvictrix for giving us a weekly place to wax poetic about its wonderfulness.
This show just flies by as we watch, on wings of fluff and silliness--and with an actual plot that isn't so bad!! I mean it's telling that I say that, but still. For makjang, this remains very self-aware, very funny and also still heart-tugging in parts. The brownie scene, I think we can all agree, gave us all THREE of these things in one go.
Now, to get serious for a moment: there's talk on the Fan Wall about just WHO the leader of that cooking class is going to turn out to be--in true makjang fashion--and I will admit that the question has been taking up a little corner of my mind since this weekend...our FL deserves to know her real family. That's all I'm sayin'.
Bring on the twisty-turny craziness, show!!!

@missvictrix Who is mocking what???? Everyone here is enjoying the show. You should come around to the fanwall and watch all the beanies flooding it with PMR posts.
The background music is actually good. The sheep bleating noise, Yi Joo's ex thunking his head on the hanging light at the bar etc., add to the strength of the show. Even the lighting colour change (Green/Blue/Purple) during Yoo Ra's resolution of taking matters into her hand was artistic.
I bet on the below
1. Yoo Ra and Seo Du Guk's elder bro will wed.
2. Yi Joo is a heiress whose family was bankrupted by Hawool and which is why grandpa is anxious and begginf for forgiveness
3. The cooking instructor might be Yi Joo's mom. That burn on her hand is suspicious
4. The bespectaled secretary is either Yi Joo's long lost brother or some divine being.
5. Seo Duk's bro hates him hecause after their dad remarried, he got less attention and care.

Mocking, definitely not. Even when I thought the first episode, we were in for trashy makjang, I was happy because it was the type of nonsense that brings joy. It has outclassed my expectations.

Inspite of its execution and self awareness this show has written such good characters. A caring, understanding and thoughtful male lead who isn’t pushy, a doormat female lead who is finding herself and is willing to take control and is not a Candy, an awesome trio for future in laws.
Even the trauma is worked well into the story. She is struggling, and it’s not easy for her to overcome years of abuse. While he and his family have been avoiding the elephant in the room.
Like you, I like the music. I don’t find anything jarring or low budget. Except ML’s pants 😅

Screeeeeeee!!! What awesome episodes!
Swoon swoon.. more swoon.. the leads chemistry is fire! This OTP is killing it..
I love the humor in this show. I enjoyed the whole brownie sequence. And how awesome is Do Guk’s Mother! The way she is drawn towards Yi Joo is so lovely to watch. That entire brownie sequence had me in splits. ‘This is just my duty as a human being. How can I look at food like this and not do something’.. ROFL
And Do Guk..oh poor chap.. he is so deep in love.. he got it so bad. Poor guy wants a real marriage.
I really hope the misunderstandings get resolved soon, because they are so much better as a team.
How to wait till next week…. **Cries in emojis**

I love this drama so much. The ML trauma came just in time, I am assuming he is the one who fell into the water. We love a water trauma because it can come from the sky, the ground or an actual body of water, and here it is the river.
I love that @attiton's boyfriend has animated and isn't your typical, terrible chaebol secretary. He has layers.
As for Yi Joo, don't listen to your desperate ex, ask your "business" partner, so no misunderstandings.
Also Halmoni is still the best.

Desperate Ex is such a milksop that when he appeared on my screen in ep. 3, I absolutely could not remember who he was supposed to be and had to look up the actor on MyDramaList.
I haven't bothered to learn the names of any of the characters - too much homework for this show, and it's nice to simply relax and enjoy the nonsense instead. The way they're all just archetypes with a few twists makes it easier to think of them as Stepmom, Scheming Bro, Scallion Mom, Needs Haircut, Hot Glasses, etc.

@darkcc That’s just who I thought of. I don’t know who @elinor meant for sure. I think of that guy as “Punchable Face” like @kdramatipsy
This is probably why humans invented names 😜
Elinor, Team Glasses team co-captain
November 8, 2023 at 10:14 AM
@attiton Names, schmames - didn't many originate as descriptions of personal characteristics anyway? Needs Haircut for me is the floppy-haired brother-in-law/secretary (oh, fine, I'll go to MDL: it's Jae-ho, played by Lee Myung-hoon). A
main-character actor with an unflattering fringe is sadly commonplace and it needs to be more extreme to merit a nickname. Desperate Ex is Se-hyeok, although @KDramaTipsy's Mr. Punchable Face works equally well for him.
Huh, I think I just talked myself around to the utility of names. 😂 But @DarkCc's Scallion Mom moniker is genius and I will never give up on that no matter how hard she tries to disguise herself as a different vegetable.

It’s worth reflecting on how we might be quicker to write off a show like PMR, with its soapy plot lines and female central character, as “bad” TV, yet a dark, gritty, ultra-violent tale of bad men doing bad things is likely to be considered “serious” television, even art.

which is why it is better than the webtoon that doesn't know what it is doing. And I agree with @mayhemf, this is intentionally written in makjang style (because it is makjang-inspired as per the webtoon) but it makes me want to send Writer-nim a bunch of flowers and a box of chocolate (instead of rat poison like I always want to)
This is intelligent. This is taking a garbage story (seriously, garbage is a compliment when you get to the webtoon) and polishing it so it becomes fun, digestible, enjoyable, and witty.

The couple's scenes are fun, sexy and warm in the same time.

So... I am not sure where they are going with the water trauma in the drama.
Based on the webtoon, I'm going to venture that the flashback is a distorted memory (aka Do-guk doesn't remember what happened properly).
I won't go any further into the world of spoilers, firstly because the drama might have taken a different direction, and secondly because I suspect we'll soon find out more about this childhood's memory.

*Episode 3*
ALL the confrontations of ALL the characters in this episode were so satisfying! I particularly enjoyed how DoGuk's sister saw right through YooRa, and how his mother dismissed YooRa's gift. And can DoGuk get any more swoony? That conversation on the couch! What woman won't melt?
*Episode 4*
DoGuk's mother is giving him tough competition in caring for YiJoo already. The number of times she got offended on YiJoo's behalf 😄 Even the ladies in the cooking class cottoned on!! Love that all the women in DoGuk's family are no-nonsense and outspoken, but without any malice.
Speaking of malice, YooRa got shown the mirror by DoGuk in the classiest way! And the way he told Mr. Punchable Face that he is super happy to be used by YiJoo 🫠 Now we have another villain in the form of the older brother. I hope this means that YiJoo will also get to protect DoGuk from his brother like he is protecting her from her family.
PS. I love the jewelry on all the women. They all wear accessories as per their personalities but I can see myself wear each and every one of those pieces. But if they could spend on the jewelry, why couldn't they get the ML a decent wardrobe?!

This drama is so good at setting you up for one thing and then twisting it oh so slightly to give you an even better payoff. Case in point: everyone's favorite brownie scene. To let the whole scene play out all the way -- not with a pained swallow and lie about "it's not too bad" but to Do-gook actually spitting it out -- added to the humor and showed that our ML is willing to lie about some things (like the true nature of his feelings) but not about the FL's cooking. Another example of this commitment was the cafe scene between Do-gook's awesome grandma and Yi-joo's shady grandpa. I wonder what the actors thought when they read the script for that one!
I like that we've finally met Do-gook's kryptonite, as it will give Yi-joo a chance to support him for a change. Seems like both families have secrets. There's already been a truck of doom. Now we've got a drowning incident, and I wouldn't be surprised if we learn there was a fire in Yi-joo's history, either, for the drama tragedy trifecta.
Looking forward to more interactions between Yi-joo and the wonderful women of Do-gook's family. Love that there's already a mutual appreciation society forming there. OTP will need it now that stepmom and Do-gook’s brother have joined forces. PMR has balanced the highs and lows for its protagonists very effectively so far. That, to me, makes the difference between frustration and pure viewing fun. Keep it up, show!

The previews are deceptive ! 😂
They showed Yi-joo banging on a door (grandpa’s) , “Is anyone there ?” ,as if she’s locked up somewhere.😂
They showed Yi-joo being startled when she got in the car. It was oppa’s Secretary . 😂
This show delivers on all fronts.

I almost didn't watch episode 4 because of the previews. I thought Yi-joo was running away st the slightest discomfort. All thanks to the beanie fanwall, I dived right back in and...it was just perfect to go along with my meal. To now see the truth of the previews play out in episode 4, I asked myself why I let myself get deceived.

This show is the bomb.
I think the slightly lesser production value doesn't hurt this show one bit. In fact, the fact that it is not highly glossy or perfectly tailored (although it would be nice if Sung Hoon was given better fitting clothes) gives the show heart in scenes to balance the makjang of it all. Somehow this show manages to give you feels while being over the top.
And can we talk about how Sung Hoon is killing it in this drama? Clearly he has charisma and looks, but in prior dramas he was often over the top in his acting. Here, he manages to convey feelings more subtlely- he clearly cares for the FL, and his wanting this marriage to be real comes through even when they are talking as if it is merely an arrangement. He never pretends to dislike her or is mean to her. This undercurrent of affection makes the interactions between ML and FL so great.
Keep going little engine of drama happiness. I think you can, I think you can!

I don't like this drama at all, I don't care about any of the characters... I mean a truck of doom could run over all of them as if they were bowling pins and I would be happy because that means "the end".
So... why am I watching it? I make that question to myself several times while I watch the episodes. I can't say I'm hooked but I know I'll keep watching this. Maybe because I'm having the best of times commenting it with two online friends and none of us is taking it seriously :)

This drama is what I looked forward to the most this week. So the meeting of the chaebol parents were everything but sweet. I am glad Jung Hye was acting the way she was so Do Guk's family get a real sense of the family Yi Joo grew up with. In that sense, Do Guk's Mom is reluctantly softening towards Yi Joo. Good luck to Jung Hye and YuRa once the Taesan ladies are fully on Yi Joo's side.
There is some secret to Yi Joo's identity. Since it was implied that YuRa is not Yi Joo's father's biological child, is Yi Joo the real daughter of the Hanwool family? Grandfather is very apologetic to YiJoo so he has done something in the past that caused her less than pleasant upbringing.
Jung Hye's secretary/ henchman, Do Yu, also has mysterious loyalties. Is he working for Grandpa or Jung Hye? Why was he smirking when Yi Joo was bickering with Jung Hye.
Now that Do Guk's trauma is out in the open, I am sure Yi Joo will find out the truth that his brother lied. I hope there are more funny moments in next week's episode like the brick brownie. His Mom was sweet in her own way when she warned Yi Joo not to feed that brick to her son. But Do Guk, being curious as he is, tried it despite her insistence to throw it away. What other dessert can Yi Joo mess up as she learn how to cook/bake?
Okay okay I admit I am all in to the charms of this show.

Guys, I started this drama as an innocuous way to pass time in the long wait for A Good Day to be a Dog episodes.
I. AM. NOW. OBSESSED. I love this show. I can't explain why but it is so addictive. Before Du Guk, I judged swoon worthiness by lingering gazes. Now, if you are not defending me by threatening to rip out the tongues of disrespectful men uttering my pretty name and risking decades of dental work to eat my over-baked brownies, what are we really doing? We can't make this work. Don't waste my time trying to date me because the standard has been set.
And when he cautioned Yi Joo that she wouldn't be able to handle it if he confessed his love, I actually said out loud I don't think I could. Then he did and the butterflies went amok.
I actually wish she was at the point that she would defend him with the take-no-prisoners attitude that he backs her with. When Se Hyeok came planting seeds of doubt she actually began to question Du Guk. But I understand that Du Guk is aware that he is in love while Yi Joo is in the 'I'm in the denial that we have this insane attraction' phase so she's not there yet. But I think his brother's actions are going to bring out that side of her real quick.
And I never thought I would say this about a FL with her love interest's chaebol family, but I can't wait for her to marry into that family! If we think Du Guk is doing an awesome job of protecting her, that army of women in his family will form an impenetrable guard around her once she is one of their own.
I love that portrayal of Granny, Mummy and Sister being sharp, discerning, smart and tough without being cruel or petty. They are pleasant and important contrast to Yi Joo's own mother and sister. Women can be warm and strong. Assertive and kind. It doesn't have to be one or the other.
Also I am really enjoying the actress who plays Yi Joo. She's doing a great job demonstrating that transforming yourself is a process. You don't become a bad ass overnight. There are moments you waver. And then there are the moments you completely embrace your villain era spending the night with your evil sister's crush or cooly reminding your scheming mother that you know she's a dirty fraud and a criminal. It's a process.
As for theories:
I going with the theory that Du Guk was in the other car in that accident and got sent back for a do-over too.
Yi Joo's grandpa definitely has something to do with her being orphaned.
Yi Joo's mum's assistant is definitely giving me 'divine being toying with the fates of mortals' vibes but still feeling it out.
I didn't consider the cooking class teacher being her mum but I like it, so let's go with that.
Love this show so much. Dying for the weekend to come to watch more.

I actually like it better than the webcomic, so far. The cinematography and production values are way better than I expected based on the comments here, the leads have great chemistry, and the female lead shows a really versatile acting range. Do-guk is still as good as in the comic - he's a bit more of a golden retriever in the comic, but I think his drama version makes far more sense for the story and his background.

I started enjoying this drama because I admired the sheer treachery and totally unexplained malice of the evil Mom--but after these episodes, I've completely switched: Do Guk is now my reason for watching, because he completely reminds me of my youthful 1980s self. No, I'm not talking about his good looks, but everything else--the ill fitting jackets and pants, the open wing shirt collar like I used to sport when I frequented my personal high end bar (okay, no bar, but plenty of wing collars), the eager eating and surreptitious spitting out of inedible brownies made by your fiance who is wonderful in every way but a terrible cook, and then the pretending you are acting when you are actually confessing something you really feel. I even had a bit of trepidation entering the yacht/boat club owned by my family, because of my trauma over past sea sickness. I actually liked my mother in law, but in retrospect, it was kind of funny how my wife's childhood art disappeared into the closet!
Oh, and one more thing: this weeks featured art style was French intimism. I hope anyone reading this is taking notes, because I will be posting a mandatory art history quiz after the 12th episode, assuming they continue the weekly introduction of painting styles, which, as a docu-drama, I think they are bound to do.

Is art history that subject in college where you get to look at naked women all the time during class? I'm asking for a very close friend, and it seems like you might have a line on this.
In related news, The Matchmakers is continuing its artistic representational rivalry with PMR offering us some light pornography in ink on paper this week, captured so delightfully in motion by @cecilieDK.
Of course, the gif was not produced for any prurient conversation about Rowoon--or any other absurd character for that matter. It came about during a conversation about why MM could possibly be rated 16+. Could it have been for the upsetting depiction of the complete Joseon suppression of female rights and power? This episode reminded me of my 1970’s high school Home Economics class. I was not a scholar in High School, so one semester I took a Home Economics class.
There were 4 people assigned to a table. 2 guys and two girls.
I was a social misfit, 70’s long hair rock n roller. Fast Times At Ridgemont High was certainly relatable.
All others at the table were hoodlums. I was a misfit at my own table !
The rest of the crew.
Ken: Pompadour, denim jacket with colors patch
DeeDee: Gangsters girlfriend about 4’6”, cute tiny thuggette
Dina: Absolutely gorgeous gangster’s girl, stunningly beautiful , yet she was ditzy.
Our task was zucchini bread. We left a crucial ingredient out , (suspect baking powder), which resulted in this dense, oily brick, not edible. ❌100% fail ‼️

I'm going through a very rough patch right now in RL, so I tuned into this because of all the rave reviews here and the dire need of some no-brain-distraction. Maybe my expectations were so low (as so many people were referring to this as a "so bad it's good" show) that I'm actually very surprised that it's not so bad after all! At least not as bad, in my pov, as many of the more "serious" dramas I've been watching lately...
Well this show gives me distraction and then some! I love it that it doesn't seem to take itself and it's genre too seriously, and that all the tropes are here and so early! Some of them are twisted into something else, some of them are just like we know them - you never know what you'll get in the end when a seemingly familiar situation turns up. I'm actually excited about how it will all unfold in the end (who will be whose family? what with the history of all of these people?), and I expect no less than that every trope in the kdrama writing manual won't be left unturned. Or untouched. Um...you know what I mean.
Plus ML's family, I luff these women! When FL's journalist friend introduced them as one of the obstacles I thought "What? They're assets, not obstacles!" Turned out to be right. I hope it will stay that way until the end!

It does despite the long wait for the next round of episodes! At least my currently overactive brain gets something to noodle on...I know you shouldn't ask too many questions about a drama like this one, but still:
- on Cera / Seeker's fan wall discussion somebody brought up the possibility of a time loop which would explain (at least to me) Do Guk's emerging before the accident and talking to Yi Joo who didn't have a clue of anything at that stage, but he seemed like he knew. Maybe he approached her to make her aware and try to break the time loop?
- I was thinking of Evil Mom's bespectacled minion who was the last person to be with Yi Joo before she woke up in the past! He is somewhat of a black box until now, so maybe he is some being who set it all off with the time traveling? He plugged her back in. Maybe more literally than we think...🤔
I really, really hope the conclusions won't be too disappointing! 🤣

Plus in Do Guk's real fake confession (or fake real? 🤔) he says that "Yi Hoo has no idea for how long he's been loving her". I guess we agree that what he said there was all real and no fake, yes? But since when does he love her? It seems for a very long time. Orphanage memories? Time travel shenanigans (like in Groundhog Day)? Oh the wait is killing me! That's why I normally don't live watch...thisgives me headaches! 😉

That's not what's happening here. The villains are cartoons. The vibe is great though. Is this the fabled "chemistry"? Oh! Oh! I have a few ideas about the FL's failed adoption!
1. The grandfather is traumatized and thinks he owes the FL for ruining her life. Perhaps he forced the family to adopt her?
2. Korean society is apparently very ambivalent about adoption. Perhaps the couple adopted an orphan to look cool and modern, but then the mother really was uncool/hated having an adopted daughter?
3. The FL is actually her adoptive mother's daughter but she had to pretend that she was only adopted. If she's ever caught, people will know her secret shame. Or she is actually her adoptive father's daughter, the rest is the same.
Or a combination of these? I'm noting this here because I love it when I guess right but also want to be kept honest about ways I guess wrong.

The adoption gives me a hard time to figure out, too! Right now I'm thinking more in the direction of the cooking class instructor, though. She was shown to have a serious looking scar on her arm, maybe from a fire? Maybe Yi Joo os her daughter, but there was a big fire when Yi Joo was little and after that, her supposed Mom lost her memories (as you do in kdramas) of her family and grandfather somehow forced the adoption because of money or so. Supposed Mom was kept away in an institution for a long time but never regained her memories. Instead she learned to cook?

too_much_tv
November 10, 2023 at 8:52 AM
Yes, I think that cooking class instructor has to be important to the plot. There are at least two problems to solve about the adoption. The one I had opinions about is why the adoptive family failed to integrate their adopted child into the family. I feel like I've seen a lot of kdramas that indict Korean society for not fully accepting adoption. An easy way to tell a good guy from a bad guy is that the bad guys believe that only biological children are "real," and even biological children can be rejected! But I must agree with you that a good kdrama mother never willingly gives up a child for adoption. So your amnesia idea is one I will look for in upcoming episodes!
