A second chance at love in Welcome to Samdalri

The second teaser for JTBC’s healing rom-com Welcome to Samdalri is here, and they had me at the romantic focus… and the reverse bandaging trope! The drama stars Shin Hye-sun (See You in My 19th Life) as our disgraced heroine who returns to her hometown on Jeju Island. Also on Jeju is her lifelong bestie — and ex — Ji Chang-wook (The Worst of Evil).

The teaser opens by showing us a quick sequence of our leads growing up: Jo Sam-dal (Shin Hye-sun) and Jo Yong-pil (Ji Chang-wook) were inseparable since birth. In the quick cuts, we also see the moment of Yong-pil’s confession, some romantic moments between the two, and then the inevitable breakup. (Nooooo!) It’ll be interesting to see how quickly the drama gives us the backstory to their romance; I kind of love the look of their youth romance, and it seems like it’ll set up important obstacles that the two will have to face later on.

Speaking of later on, the rest of the teaser continues the romantic tone as we watch Yong-pil react to Sam-dal’s return. Intercut with past angst and tears (who made my Wookie cry!?), it looks like there will be no shortage of a) romantic moments in the rain and b) well-handled tropes. I mean, we have Sam-dal bandaging Yong-pil’s elbow (perhaps from their rain-catch-fall?) and he’s obviously affected by her nearness once again.

Do we have the best of both worlds here, with a friends-to-lovers and a second-chance romance wrapped into one? Because between the magic of these two leads, the fun supporting cast — Lee Jae-won (Can We Be Strangers), Kim Mi-kyung (Doctor Cha), Kang Young-seok (The Kidnapping Day), and Kang Mina (Cafe Minamdang) to name a few — and the talent behind the camera, things are looking good.

Directed by PD Cha Young-hoon (Forecasting Love and Weather, When the Camellia Blooms) and written by Kwon Hye-joo (Hi Bye, Mama!, Go Back Spouses), JTBC’s Welcome to Samdalri premieres on December 2

Add me to support group. It looks so good. I will be proper vex if it turns into some next level ridiculousness after a trailer like that. (Exhibit one If you wish upon me).

For some reason, this set up of a weather forecaster and a photographer reminds me of the U.S. movie Twister, a classic involving scientists and storm nuts who chase tornadoes across the U.S. to capture images together, and experience the thrill of severe weather. I don't remember the plot nor how the romance unfolded, but I do remember a great scene with a flying cow swept up by cyclonic winds.

I realize that Korea doesn't have many tornadoes, just typhoons, but I'm thinking that a romantic happy resolution to this one will come in the middle, and then the FL will become a world famous weather photographer, being driven around the country by her weather forecasting husband. The rest of the episodes will extend the sentimental "home town" community story that begin the show with episodic portraits of small towns across Korea being hit by severe weather and residents pulling together and surviving, thanks to the bold forecasts by the weatherman and the emotional images captured by the photographer. The theme of the show could be Koreans demonstrating inspiring resilience in the midst of climate change.
A climactic scene at the end could be when main couple risk their lives to help rescue local cows from floating away in floods, and the last shot will be of the photographer snapping bucolic images of the saved cows while her husband hugs her from behind.

Note that I'm not saying that this WILL be the story, I'm just saying that this COULD be the story.

Also … the trailer seems to leave out the part about their past lives in Joseon? 😉

1. What the trailer doesn’t show is mom (Kim Mi-kyung) yelling from a second floor window, “What are you two doing laying on the street in the rain?”.
2. I would love two cameos:
a. Yang Se-yong (30B17)
b. Song Kang (FL&W).

1. This is me yelling at every drama. Can you imagine if standing/lying down/sitting in the rain really did cause people to get colds or fevers? All kdrama actors would always be ill during filming and no show would ever get finished on time. Or we'd develop a tolerance for sniffly, snotty kisses and debate which actor looked cuter with a drippy red nose or had a better move when whipping out the tissues.

2. Is it too much to hope for Ye Ji-won to make a cameo to tell the haenyeo divers "Don't sink, peel!"

Lol, 2 I think is a THIRTY BUT SEVENTEEN (2018) combo reference of both Jennifer and Chan. Great. After all with Shin Hye-sun we are only one degree of separation from 30B17.

I really wish I could get folks to lower their expectations a bit for SAMDALRI particularly as a rom-com. I have never approached this drama as a rom-com. It definitely will have melo aspects and I am putting this in the category of a ‘healing drama’ along the lines of 30B17.
If a crying JCW doesn’t warn you I don’t know what will.

Loved everything this bloke has been in except 2 the last one was way too bloody for me. I fell for his acting chops in Empress Ki and have been watching out for other dramas with him in.
I will be looking forward to this show too, but I am hoping it won't be a slow boring romance but something with a bit of meat in it as well.

Bloke was the only good thing in that bloody drama. Good thing he's getting good skin care routine in this one.

I am a sucker for a good rom-com and K-Dramas are the best at rom-coms and romantic series right now. Much better than Hollywood and C-Dramas, IMHO. (Can't comment on J-Dramas beyond MY HAPPY MARRIAGE which is anime and one of the best romances I've watched in years).

However, if there is one thing I'd like to say to the writer of this upcoming drama: PLEASE NO SERIAL KILLER! SPARE ALL OF US!

Please and thank you.

This looks really really good! It feels like forever since I’ve seen a good old trope-y rom com. This one looks awesome!

I think we’re gonna get some really great dramas in the upcoming months 🤞 and so many great pairings too. GHJ-LMH, KSH-KJW, IU-PBG, PSJ-HSH. I think I’m missing a few more but very excited for some good ole fashion rom coms!

Kim Soo Hyun and Kim Ji Won? Interesting...

I somehow either missed the Gong Hyo Jin-Lee Min Ho pairing or forgot, and now I’m really looking forward to it!

Yep! Kim Soo-Hyun and Kim Ji-won are pairing up for Park Ji-eun’s newest drama. I’m not sure if I’m more excited about the pairing or the writer’s comeback lol.

Gong Hyo-jin and Lee Min-ho has a space themed drama coming up. We even got a few teaser photos a couple of months ago. They look pretty darn good together too!

Crash Landing was her last one! So this is a big comeback for both her and Kim Soo-hyun since he also hasn’t done a mainstream drama for a couple of years now!

O, niceee. For some reason, I thought IOTNBO was popular, but upon reflection, I can see how that kinda drama wouldn’t really attract a mainstream audience.

Oh yeah, CLOY was Park ji Eun! And now KSH is pairing with Kim Ji Won (whom starting to REALLY love). I’m looking forward to this.

1

@flighteygazelles1

Haha no you’re definitely right that IOTNBO was extremely popular. Had really good ratings, lots of awards and all that jazz.

But it’s been a couple of years since that drama came out. 3 years actually! Yes I’m also a little baffled because it definitely feels recent lol

2

Finally a JCW series I am looking forward to. This looks so yumm in every way. Can't wait! It's a veritable feast right now with My Dearest, Castaway Diva and now Welcome to Samdarli.
