Twinkling Watermelon: Episodes 5-6

Trouble is on the horizon as our hero sets his heart on changing his father’s future. But while he bends over backwards to protect his teenage dad, all Dad wants to do is hang out with his crush. With tensions rising all around, our fish out of water has some hard work ahead — especially if he wants to get back to 2023 and be able to recognize it.

Twinkling Watermelon: Episodes 5-6

When we left off, Eun-gyeol had just realized that his father was missing a very significant scar. We could already see the wheels in his head spinning with thoughts of altering the future. And sure enough, we find him this week trying to change Dad’s fate. If Eun-gyeol has a say in it, his dad will never become deaf.

Most of the action in these episodes is focused on that singular goal, with both endearing and not-so-endearing consequences. For one, the band is finally off the ground when Eun-gyeol decides that playing together is a way to stay by Yi-chan’s side 24/7 to keep an eye on him. Eun-gyeol rounds up a second guitarist, faces off with him, and wins his admiration so he’ll join their group. With that, they’ve got the five members they need to become official, plus Ma-joo as their manager.

The only problem is that the band doesn’t want Yi-chan to be the leader. If he thinks he’s good enough to be a front man, he’ll need to audition. That means he has to learn to play an instrument and bring his A-game on vocals. Eun-gyeol uses this as a chance to seat Yi-chan in front of him as a student and teach him guitar (in addition to being his dad’s tutor). Unlike with school subjects, Yi-chan is a quick study, using his feelings for Se-kyung to add passion to what he sings. By the end of the audition, the new band is practically begging him to lead.

Things go awry when Se-kyung moves to the U.S. with her family. At first, Yi-chan is unaware she’s gone and Eun-gyeol and Ma-joo decide to keep it a secret. She was the whole reason Yi-chan wanted to start a band and without her, he might toss all his hard work out the window. Right now, things are going so well: the band is practicing, they’re scheduled to be the closing act at an upcoming festival, and Yi-chan is studying his heart out. They can’t risk all that.

Twinkling Watermelon: Episodes 5-6

Plus, Eun-gyeol thinks they have nothing to worry about in the long run since he already learned from Future Se-kyung that she left Korea in 11th grade and didn’t return until Harabeoji’s funeral. So, uh, what is she doing back in Korea only a few days later? It seems she’s run away and she’s ready to stop playing the role of abiding daughter. She cuts her hair short (because we all know that means trouble) and hawks her frilly recital clothes in the street for some quick cash.

When Eun-gyeol stumbles into her, he’s shocked. While his main goal now is to stop Yi-chan from getting into whatever mysterious accident caused his hearing loss, he also needs his parents to get together so he can be born. Se-kyung being the object of Yi-chan’s affection is pretty problematic on that front, so he tells Se-kyung not to see Yi-chan.

Now, normally — at least, the last time we left her — this wouldn’t be an issue. The old Se-kyung couldn’t get far enough away from Yi-chan. But this new Se-kyung has had a sudden and unexplained change of heart. She goes to Yi-chan’s work, where he scoops ice cream part time, and sits him down for a lemonade so she can apologize for how she treated him. She wants to get to know him better and she’ll take their band-making bet seriously.

Later, she shows up at band practice like she’s his girlfriend, throwing around tickets to an amusement park (where Eun-gyeol tags along to keep Yi-chan away from any scary-ride accidents). By this point, Yi-chan is convinced that Se-kyung returned to Korea just to be with him.

This whole thing is confusing, to me, and to Eun-gyeol for a couple of reasons. First, when Se-kyung gets back to Korea and Eun-gyeol finds her in the street selling her clothes illegally, she tells him that she ran away “to die,” but that she’s still deciding on it, so if he tells anyone she’s there, she’ll “really die.” Now, aside from the fact that the story is using a suicide threat to drum up mystery, this is perplexing because after this conversation, she goes straight out to meet Yi-chan.

When Eun-gyeol asks her to explain herself, she says she did it because he told her not to. He accuses her of toying with Yi-chan’s feelings, but she swears she’s not — she just changed her mind about him. Yi-chan, in the meantime, is so smitten that it ends up causing a big blowout between him and Eun-gyeol, where Eun-gyeol quits the band and leaves the boarding house — he’s done trying to take care of his immature dad! Cue crying with mouth full of food.

Twinkling Watermelon: Episodes 5-6

The second confusing thing — and this is the part Eun-gyeol gets stuck on — is how Se-kyung can be in Korea when he knows that’s not how the future plays out. An answer arrives when he gets another payphone call from the timekeeper guy who runs that mystical music store. The truth is, Eun-gyeol started changing the future the minute he arrived to 1995. Remember when he impersonated the Godfather of Rock and the real Yoon Dong-jin got left behind? Yeah, that’s a problem. Everyone Eun-gyeol has encountered there might now have a changed future.

After the phone call, Eun-gyeol still doesn’t know why he’s in the past or what he’s supposed to do — but he’s starting to get hints. There’s a competition the next day to celebrate the release of a new guitar and he joins it believing he’s supposed to win. The audition is outside, it starts pouring rain just as Eun-gyeol is taking the mic, and he’s electrocuted immediately and rushed to the ER.

Twinkling Watermelon: Episodes 5-6

Now, this is where the episode ends, but there’s a whole thread running alongside that we still have to discuss. Chung-ah’s backstory is revealed this week and it’s another tearjerker like Se-kyung’s. We see her as a child, born into a wealthy household, with a seemingly loving mom who taught her sign language.

Suddenly, her mom is in the backseat of car, looking like she’s being dragged away, while an abandoned Chung-ah cries in the road. A woman arrives (whom we’ve already seen is the head of the arts school that Chung-ah and Se-kyung attend) and she becomes Chung-ah’s “parent.” The woman is evil, refusing sign language and trying to force Chung-ah to make sounds — and even locking her in the attic when she can’t. As the young Chung-ah turns into the teenager we know now, we see she’s still being locked in the attic.

With that kind of life, Chung-ah’s crush on Yi-chan is rooted in how he made her laugh the first time she saw him — and how he made her heart pound the second time (when he saved her from the falling books). By the time they met again in the storage room, she had already been trailing him, only to realize he liked Se-kyung. And that’s how she ended up giving him the concert ticket last week.

So, that brings us up to speed for their meeting this week — when Yi-chan berates her for humiliating him in front of Se-kyung. He went to the concert thinking that Se-kyung invited him, but he made a fool of himself. He wants to know if Chung-ah did it on purpose to make fun of him. Chung-ah is frazzled by his anger and starts to walk away. Yi-chan — still not knowing she can’t hear — thinks she’s just being rude, and even yells, “Are you deaf?!”

Chung-ah goes to cry alone behind a phone booth as Yi-chan learns from his boss that she is actually deaf. Yi-chan feels guilty and steps out of the ice cream shop to find her — right at the moment Se-kyung arrives to have that lemonade and get all girlfriend-style. To his credit, he tells Se-kyung to wait and goes after Chung-ah, but Chung-ah gets in a taxi and leaves. He then picks up a keychain she’s dropped with the words “Viva La Vida.” (This seems like a clue since the mystical music store is called “La Vida” and Harabeoji’s music shop was called “Viva”).

Twinkling Watermelon: Episodes 5-6

Meanwhile, Eun-gyeol remembers that his parents met at a sign language class. That means if he stops Yi-chan from losing his hearing, his parents won’t meet. But, rather than go back on his goal, he decides he can still try to stop Yi-chan’s accident as long as he can figure out where his mom is and get his parents to meet some other way beforehand.

It looks like fate might be on Eun-gyeol’s side after all because, later, when Yi-chan goes to see Chung-ah at school to return her keychain, she’s sick and feverish, almost collapsing in his arms — and it’s up to him to piggyback her to the ER. It also just happens to be at the same time that Eun-gyeol is carted in on a stretcher after his electrocution. Phewf. Now we’re really caught up to the end.

Twinkling Watermelon: Episodes 5-6

Well, these episodes had a little less heart and humor than the prior weeks, but we’ve set up a lot of tensions that will rearrange all the relationships going forward. Yi-chan and Eun-gyeol are not on speaking terms as we close this week (and Eun-gyeol might not be able to speak at all when we meet him next). Yi-chan and Chung-ah had a falling out but are now thrust together in a fateful way. And Eun-gyeol really seems to dislike Se-kyung at this point — not only because she’s the third wheel on him trying to be born, but because what is with her attitude?

The missing connection this week was between Chung-ah and Se-kyung and it feels like a gaping hole. I was really loving the developing friendship between these two women. This week we get one lousy letter from Se-kyung to Chung-ah, but then Se-kyung never contacts Chung-ah when she’s back in town. Worse, when Se-kyung goes to the ice cream shop to surprise Yi-chan, Chung-ah sees them together and thinks that she missed her chance with him. It definitely seems like a way to put a wedge between the two friends.

I have a ton of questions, but it’s still early so I’m confident they’ll be answered as our story unfolds. For now, I’ll just distract myself with counting the Back to the Future nods as they roll out. This week: loud electric guitars at school band tryouts, skateboarding, and maybe even accidentally hitting on your teenage mom (I mean, giving your umbrella to a crying lady in the rain definitely seems like a way to make her accidentally swoon).

It seems like this is a different Se Kyung and she too is from the future. She wasn't surprised at the phone ringing. I hope that explains why she didn't contact Chung Ah. Next episodes seem to be juicy, so here is hoping for more answers.

Yes, I think you're right. I reckon Se-kyung is also a time traveller - and her references to "I've come to die" may well refer to knowledge of her past - or a decision to take revenge on someone in the past. I'm betting Se-kyung and Eun-gyeol end up together in 2023 at the end of all this...

I'm just thinking now, it makes sense that she is the daughter. Her mom moved them back to Korea because her dad was cheating. Why would the ahjumma kill herself knowing she was having a daughter. So it makes more sense the daughter came back in time I think what tripped us all up was her apologizing to the family photo, but her mom was in the photo, too. We just assumed she was talking about her grandmother when apologizing. Lol, sorry stream of consciousness.

Yes her luggage tags gave away her name already - On Eun-yu. I'm assuming she's Se-kyeong's daughter. Interestingly the luggage also said From Incheon ToJFK. Not sure if that was also a clue or just an oversight/ mistake.

Yes, I sorta guessed at it when she "returned" from the US. I missed that part about direction of travel. Suspecting that, the episode made more sense, and I could have fun with the hijinks that balance out the angst. I liked it.

I wonder if they actually did a chemistry test for this drama before they cast the actors as for me, there is no palpable chemistry between both versions of “Sekyung” and Yichan but a really strong and pulsing one between Chungah and Yichan. I also think there is promising chemistry between the new “Sekyung” and Eungyeol.

Also something for those of us who are interested in the Korean language, how Koreans pronounce their own names and how radically different/misleading the romanisation of these names often can be.
In ep 6 at the 43:48 mark, one of the bandmates asks where is Eun-Gyeol. If you listen carefully, you will hear that he says Ha Eun-Gyeol and pronounces it as “Haungrrè” (rr=a rolling r and I borrowed the grave accent to denote its sound).
I won’t bore you with why this happens but this kind of thing never ceases to delight and at times confuse me.

Me too! I'm fascinated by their pronunciation and also how syllables seem to be contracted in speech, ending in things that seem utterly unlike the romanised words. You're exactly right: delight and confusion!

You’re dead right! Native Korean speakers largely speak really fast and to maintain the rhythmic flow of their language, they often smoosh syllables together/truncate them. Also, because ’ㄹ‘ is a liquid consonant, its sound changes depending on where it is. Then, there are a number of other consonants which change their sounds when they are in the proximity of a few other consonants.
I just find all of this so fascinating.

@kate88hammond: Also. I really liked your essay. Meant to comment but haven’t had the time to do a proper comment as yet. I also appreciated knowing that you were a history teacher. I really love reading and understanding history, particularly what should be and is contested - such as the First Nations struggles and longevity.

Thank you! And so happy to hear from another history enthusiast. Contested history is hugely interesting and important - it's one of the key things we focus on in teaching history. Who tells us the stories, and who else could have told us the stories and how they would have been different if they had that chance, and how historians construct their narratives from all this partial evidence anyway. I love it!

I haven't studied Korean in years, but it sounds like the bass player adds "은" at the end of Eun-gyeol's name. The impression I got was that he said something like "What about Eun-gyeol?/And Eungyeol....? So I guess something like "한은결은?" I probably got this wrong, because I've become so rusty after all these years.

I was focused on reading the subtitles as I was watching the episode, but I went back to that moment after reading your comment.

It is fascinating to listen to variations in spoken Korean and how certain consonants will change pronunciation depending on their location. I wish I had the energy to go back to studying Korean, but I am trying to focus on another language for work purposes. I wish I could have studied more languages when I was younger, but I shouldn't feel like it's impossible. I can always start again in the future.

@peridot: The ending of the name sounded to me as I mentioned it. I listened to it a few times but it could be different too . I was mainly trying to focus on how the name itself changed and was compressed in his pronunciation.
Good luck with your current language study.

Exactly.
Yi-chan and Chung-ah's scenes are full of palpable chemistry, as you said, despite them only communicating one-sidedly. While this new Se-kyung seemed simply determined to get all her fun, including befriending Yi-chan and his band mates, before she made the decision to unmade herself (if we were going with the theory that she was a time traveler too). I'm loving all the different interactions between these 4 leads we got so far, and I want so much more now that Chung-ah is finally becoming a part of that circle.

I'm going to disagree slightly with @dramaddictally and say I found these episodes funnier and more heartfelt than the early ones. The battle of the bass and the guitar was a really funny macho showdown, ending with Flight of the Bumblebee? I also felt Yi-chan's guilt and embarrassment when he realized how badly he behaved toward Chung-ah, only to be momentarily distracted by his crush, before his better instincts kicked in.
I did get a little frustrated at Eun-gyeol continually screaming at the "new" Se-Kyung to stay away--she obviously was in the mood to provoke him and he should have changed his tactics to sweet-talking her, which is obviously what he would kind of like to do anyway, since he brought her food and couldn't say to her that he wasn't jealous of his Dad.
I thought the near death shocking from a microphone was a little dramatic, since I don't think those mics draw much power. I suppose if another power cord was loose in water, and the metal of the mic completed the circuit, then power could course through the body, causing cardiac arrest. But it seems a little unlikely since the rain had just started. But this is getting ridiculously nit-picky, I know.

I was also confused about the new Se-kyung, and thought for a time she had really run away from her parents and was now pursuing Yi-chan as a rebellion, but the show gave it away at the end, so now I know she is trying to change the past, maybe establish a connection with Yi-chan in the past to eliminate her Mom's unhappiness in the present, where it sounds like her husband is abusive. So she's willing to give up being born, in a ridiculous noble idiocy that thankfully will be defeated by love for Eun-gyeoul.

Anyway, for me, at least the show really got a lot more interesting and entertaining and I'm looking forward to what comes next.

Hacja! 😱 I'm with you. I liked these episodes esp. guessing we have SK's daughter in play here. Yeah, maybe they could have cut the bickering btwn fake SK and EG down by a scene or two, but I rather enjoyed them on the whole. I see a bickering enemies > lovers trope happening, and I'm down with it. As @dncingemma says, they have chemistry. While I'm getting ready for my heart to be punched by Chungah and Yichan.

And, I always prefer a character who hides their trauma behind jokes and snappy comebacks than angst and lashing out at the female lead... Oh wait, that's male trauma.

I also thought the almost deadly shock by microphone was a bit much. But I guess they needed a cliffhanger. I didn't even think whether it was even possible. I thought instead of the hospital bills. Who's gonna pay?

Unfortunately, up to now, male trauma has not yet appeared full force in this one yet, so it really doesn't have all the feels. I'm sure we'll see some copious tears flow from Eun-gyeol before the end of the series, though. And a good thing, too, because as you know @indyfan, male emotion is very powerful. If only women weren't afraid of shedding tears like men!

A qn: I might’ve missed this but when did they mention that the real Sekyung’s husband might be abusive?

Required fields are marked *

It was when the Sekyung's daughter was explaining why she came back to die--she told Eun-gyeol her Dad had another woman in the U.S. and when her Mom found out she was going to start drinking again. I realize cheating doesn't constitute physical abuse, but the fact that she had been drinking before implies at the very least husbandly neglect.

But I still don't know what the daughter's thinking was in trying to encourage Yi-Chan, except that maybe her Mom spoke fondly of him as an intriguing past suitor in comparison to her current husband, and the daughter is hoping that he'll still retain his ardor until her Mom comes back from the U.S., and so not marry Yi-chan instead of her father.

I'm sure that will be revealed, however!

Sorry I mistyped this comment. I meant that the daughter hoped that her mother, Se-kyung would NOT marry her father, but RATHER marry Yi-chan.

If only I could go back in the past and change my Dramabeans comments! 1. I came here to die.

For me, that means Se Kyeong's daughter wants to prevent her parents from marrying each other, or just do something, change something in her mother's life so she doesn't exist in the future.

And let's say that fine for now. She's having a hard time and she probably thinks this is the best for her family and herself, Idk. But WHY is she interfering with someone else's life? She's a smart kid. She should know that wtv she does with Lee Chan is gonna mess up his timeline. So why is she doing this? Just to mess to Eun Gyeol? Because she wants to have fun?

This is kdramaland, so wtv she does, the parents' relationship won't change, I get that, but it still bothers me.
Uhmm, maybe I'm being too harsh on the kid because I don't like the stolen identity trope. Someone doing wtv they want under your name is kinda scary for me. I hate being responsible for something that has nothing to do with me. I wouldn't care if it is my future daughter, I would just hate it.

2. Lee Chan... the ability of this dude to interprete everything like his wants and ignore everyone else and their feelings is amazing. LOL

Of course he didn't notice the EVIDENT change in Se Kyeong's personality and how she treated him. Of course he didn't. He never really cared about her.

And of course he's gonna change the song if she says so. He doesn't have the minimum consideration for his band mates. Or just the regular sense of reality.

I'm with Eun Gyeol. I wouldn't care if that guy was my dad, my grandpa or wtv. I would've walked away without looking back.

I know that he wants to enjoy his youth and all that, but he shouldn't be the only one that gets to do it. The other kids also have goals, dreams and problems. They're kids too. And they're the protagonist in their own stories.

I'm pretty sure being more considerate won't stop Lee Chan from enjoying his youth.

3. Cheong Ha... Why the girls have the saddest stories? First OG Se Kyeong, now Cheong Ha, and according to what Se Kyeong's daughter said, her family is a complete disaster too.
I feel bad for the mom. But when I remember her smile in the present timeline, I don't feel so sad. It's nice watching her being so bright and happy. I'm glad she found her smile again and I'm glad she has a loving family now.

And this makes me think how sad is that Se Kyeong never got to have a truly happy family. Not in 1995 and not now. And she didn't get to have a nice year with her friends! She didn't even get to say goodbye to Cheong Ha. And Cheong Ha never wrote her back since she thought Se Kyeong was in Korea.

LOL Se Kyeong is gone but I'm still super invested in her story. Like I said before, I'm probably watching this show the wrong way.

4. Sweet Eun Gyeol... Aigoo. Poor baby. All he wants to do is be in a freaking band. 😂 He had to witness his dad acting like this, his mom being heartbroken and get electrocuted?

PS. I think it was during the scene in the amusement park with the band mates that someone on Viki commented: "they should've made this a BL", and I almost choked on water. 😂

The Se Kyung that xame back from NY seems like a totally different person. More so that scene whe. She heard the phone ringing makes me wonder if she is from thw future too. Is she Se Kyung's daughter? If she is why would she want to die in the past?

My fave character is Chung Ah and I am glad that we get her story fleshed out. That stepmom(?) looks like she stepped out of Cinderella with two kids in tow. If that is the type of "parent" she has, no wonder she tells her own kids that she is practically an orphan.

I enjoyed Eun Gyeol's scenes with his dad and different ways he tried to cockblock him. I also enjoy how similar they both are. Grandma is right in thinking that they are more like brothers.

Plus Eun Gyeol's bickering with the new!Se Kyung seems like your typical romcom fight between potential love interests.

I agree with @dramadictally. I did miss the friendship between Se Kyung and Chung Ah. SK forgetting CA makes me question this new!SK's identity even more.

my guess, just as anyone's, is that the 'new' Se Kyung really is her daughter from the future. Too many hints about this, and how she reacted to the phone ringing gabe it away. Plus, there's the things that she sould've know, like Yi Chan and Eun Gyeoul have been to her house and stuff like that

I believe she intends to make herself never be born, this is what she means by dying. But then, WHAT IS IT WITH THE ROPE IN THE CEILING LOOKING LIKE A GALLOW? What was the point of this? If you want to kill yourself like that you don't need to travel to the past.
I didn't like that scene. Unless it is really well explained later on the series, to me it will seem like the show tried to be very obvious that she meant it when she said she came back to die.

Hum... This drama doesn't really work with me.

I didn't like Se-Kyeong past or present. I don't specially like how Seol In-Ah is playing her. Her story is sad but I wasn't feeling touched by it.

Chung-ah's story was so weird. And I don't think she can follow just by reading lips like that, people doesn't even watch her when they speak. I was kinda sad when the father he met her in sign language. It meants he was interesting in her only after he became deaf.

Eun-gyeol spends so much time trying to make Yi-Chan a better person, it's kinda weird. I wonder how was Yi-Chan's journey in the past.

I'm the most interested in Yi-Chan and Chung-Ah's story.

The guitar scenes are still bad...

During the casting interviews, it was weird they were all wearing casual clothes and she was wearing a whole white suit.

There is an older vibe from her compared with the rest of the actors that doesn't suit her characters.

I think part of it was the jarring transition from prim and proper Se Kyung to a carefree Se Kyung. That was whiplash inducing.

I fell in love with Chung Ah, once they revealed her backstory and showed her falling for Yi Chan because he made her laugh, a feat that does not happen often in her life. She is such a sweet and lonely girl! Her future adult self is so caring and happy that makes me guess that Eun Gyeol and Yi Chan brought color in to her life. Can't wait to see more of the interactions between these three characters.

I love Seol In Ah, but she looks so out of place as the young rebellious time travelling daughter in this drama. Her aegyos aren't cute and I find it annoying, especially with that hideous hair cut on a pretty face. Maybe, its the way her character is written or because her past two dramas portrayed her as a strong independent adult, but I am not warming up to the current Se Kyung. I absolutely do not want a romance between Eun Gyeol and Se Kyung because a) there is zilch chemistry between them and b) I am interested only in the parents love story.

I’m just here for the Korean pop/rock songs during band practice. Does anyone know whats the title of the song in episode 6 during their first band practice?

I love the way you jump in and out of the comments as and when the need arises. Have you tried the OST to see if it’s included in part 1? They usually have multiple releases during the drama run time so it may come in part 2 or 3 of the OST. The songs I like the most in most dramas don’t usually appear until after the drama has finished and the whole OST including the background instrumentals is released.

Shazam may also help as they played a lot of it although it doesn’t always find foreign language songs. Good luck on your mission. Hwaiting!💪🏾

First thing I did was to look up OST in Spotify, tried the comment section in Viki, if anyone wrote it down. Next up, Shazam it for the nth time, no such luck. Did some comment search in other “free kdrama/cdrama sites,” wondering if they ever mentioned the title song.

An aha moment, post a question in Dramabeans, maybe they know. While waiting, search YouTube, typed possible keywords and search comment section. Keep refreshing/logging in just to check, if someone replied in Dramabeans (got excited when someone replied).

I’ll keep trying though…

I thought maybe the song was old and not new since it’s a setlist from the 90s that they were practicing.

For this much effort, I’ll keep searching. 🎶🎶🎶

Sounds like it will be on the release after airing OST drop as this was me and my search efforts for Simple Man by Demian from the drama Race. Song finally came out in August the drama finished in June!

@kurama, thank you so much!!! 😚🤗 the search is over…. I knew it was an old song and thanks again for finding it for me.

I kept replaying the same song over and over and searched the lyrics last night hoping to find the answer but you came through for me.

I’ll get my husband to listen to the music and have him play for me. 😊😊😊😊

It was such a rare occurrence to watch a time-slip drama this bright and happy. Everyone in our foursome leads has their respective dark or tragic backstory, but their youthful spirit outshone it all with optimism and hope (no matter how bittersweet or even anger-induced it was). The drama felt full of boundless energy, repeatedly coming back up again after it delivered its hefty emotional punch, and I'm a sucker for that.

This week eps is just a full blast on hijinks and shenanigans, with the carelessness and impulsiveness that I expected from a bunch of determined teenagers, and I wouldn't have it any other way. I love how Eun-gyeol's presence is enough to blow a violent storm through everyone's lives. He basically upended their whole reality and carefully laid out plans, including ones that Eun-gyeol himself didn't plan on disturbing. It would be very interesting to see how life turned out to be for each of our leads as Eun-gyeol's arrival introduced them to a world possibilities that was wholly different from what they expected.

I also like how we get to hear each of the leads' perspective on their lives and things that started changing with Eun-gyeol's arrival. Not every sequences made sense, but looking at things from their eyes made the inaccuracy or the dramatic flair less important than how it affected them and shaped them as a person. I also have my suspicion now (even though I promised myself before starting this drama not to get too mired up in wild theories) that Eun-gyeol might not be the only time traveler in our story, especially after Se-kyung's encounter with what was seemingly an otherworldly call. While the time travel aspect didn't seem to have the same stake as other time-bending stories, I'm worried that there are more consequences in the future, especially after Eun-gyeol's unexpected injury in the past timeline. (Did he take over Dad's place somehow?)

All in all, it seemed like we are only starting to move forward in earnest now that everyone's introduction phase was out of the way. We should see whether Eun-gyeol can find a way to return to his 2023, or whether that dream was never even in the plan the moment his time travel journey started.

* Definitely original SK's daughter
* I thought when she said,"I came here to die", she meant I'll play cupid and pair her first love with her hence, erasing her existence but then that loop...from the ceiling showed up.
* If I remember correctly,2023 SK said she had her first love in 11th grade so...Chung-ah?? IMAGINE 🤯

I agree she is playing Cupid, but once she has paired "her mum" (played by her) with Yi Chan, how can she make the real mum (who is in the USA) come back and fall in love with him?

She might be thinking of something. Also from what we see in the trailer for the next episode, one can assume she herself is trying to be on her mother's self. Given that she doesn't have feelings for Yi Chan or anybody really, I feel like she's just winging it for now. Unlike Eungyul, she feels like she has nothing to lose anymore so..just dismantling everything I guess.

Yeah I also got the feeling that OG Se-kyung liked Chung-ah romantically. Daughter-Se-kyung may have thought that Yi-chan was her mom's first love and wanted to pair them up together.

If this wasn't a Kdrama, I would have totally thought Cheong-ah was Se-Kyung's first love - so much chemistry. I initially thought Se-Kyung was looking for her birth father at the airport but, no, it seems it was Cheong-Ah. And a written letter to Cheong-Ah only days after heading to the US, sounding disappointed Cheong-ah didn't bid her an airport farewell, and wondering if she's missed by anyone. Plus, earlier inviting Cheong-ah to the concert, then desperately searching for her amongst the crowd. I mean, hello, this is queer romance 101 🤣

I have enjoyed these two episodes a lot. The show keeps being funny in a way that never annoys me.
The only character I can't understand is the one (the ones?) Seol In Ah is playing.
I have read other beanies commenting it too, as if the actress was a wrong casting choice. Maybe that's the explanation.
That would be a shame because I'm loving all the other actors in their roles.

I really love the father & son's relationship. Whether it's in 1995 or the current timeline (I don't even know how to phrase it haha)

I like all the moments when Eun Gyeol & his dad are signing and how complex their dynamic is. It makes their last argument even more poignant to me. Eun Gyeol has been a bridge for his family since the moment he could communicate (for the most part) which made him have to be mature or grow up faster but his dad was still always protective and tried to be open & there for him yet because of their circumstances, they couldn't connect fully. I think, even though both of his parents called him the pride of his life, if Eun Gyeol had told them how he was feeling, they might've understood him. I think that might be the point of his journey to the past; to better understand and relate to his parents.

So, this version of Se Kyung is from the future? Ugh this is confusing!

At first I thought Se Kyung's return attitude switch was so jarring haha. I was just as confused as Eun Gyeol. She was only gone a couple of days! How did her run in with Eun Gyeol when he called her ahjumma (and possibly when he showed up at the concert to say Yi Chan really did start a band) affect her perspective so much that she decided to come back? I wonder if this will be addressesed or left as a plot hole.

I thought Cheong Ah's stepmother was trying to "toughen her up" but apparently she (and the so far unseen father) are assh**es who don't believe disability is real or something. I wanna know why Cheong Ah's mother was sent away and how Cheong Ah was finally able to break away from those people labeled her family.

And here I thought the family dynamics and timey wimey mechanics were going to be the problems of the story. Silly me. We actually end up having a jerkass antagonist. (I wouldn't be surprised if the actor playing the heir also somehow ended up playing the grown up version of the boy who set the house on fire. It's just that random)

So now that Eun Gyeol has been electrocuted and hospitalized, I'm wondering if he's gonna temporarily losing his voice or hearing or both which can bring him & Cheong Ah together.

The mother was likely sent away so that they can pretend like the father didn't cheat on the stepmother. Also, the mom probably gave up Cheong-ah in return for the father and step-mother giving Cheong-ah all the resources needed for Cheong-ah to have a comfortable upbringing.

Thanks for the recap - it's been a wee minute since I've been this invested in a Kdrama. Loving this series, especially looking forward to more of Cheong-ah's backstory.

As noted by others, definitely think the newcomer is Se-Kyung's daughter, probably why only her back and not her face was shown in the earlier episodes. The "Mum's drinking" rhetoric and Se-Kyung seen earlier with all her wine bottles was another hint (or to throw us off). Plus the baggage ticket with a different name. I wonder if the person in charge of props made an error with the "To JFK", or were we watching 2 different time traveller's, one landing in 1995, the other landing in New York? Of interest, Incheon airport wasn't in operation until March of 2001. Supposed to be 1995, writers perhaps didn't care for accuracy. Either way, definitely don't think it's Se-kyung as personality is a stark contrast. Se-Kyung also seemed very much invested in the relationship with Cheong-ah, also looked for her at the concert and again at the airport. Plus wrote to her - doubtful she would ever hurt Cheong-ah by seeking out Yi-Chan. The 2.0 version doesn't seem to care much for anyone's feelings.

People theorizing about abuse and the daughter makes things even more confusing for me. It's like when people were saying Ajumma was Se Kyung before the show said or showed it.

I'm looking forward to what led to Se Kyung's personality switch mainly because I'm hoping for some clarity.

Otherwise, I will go tumbling down a rabbit hole of confusion which includes wondering are people seeing Eun Gyeol as himself or does he look like someone else (which would be the case if that's really Se Kyung's daughter). But the daughter angle kinda contradicts the "everything was going fine until this jerk [Eun Gyeol] showed up" line from an earlier episode.

I'm still curious about Se Kyung's interest in Chung Ah. Why did she want to befriend her in the first place. Why did she write to her and mention whether people even cared that she was gone? Even in that letter, she seemed a bit disillusioned which gave some validity to her not wanting to be a living doll for her parents anymore because it's just all hollow and unsatisfying.

Se Kyung not remembering (or knowing) that Eun Gyeol & Yi Chan visited her house is one of the most confusing things.

Oh timey wimey mechanics haha
I feel like I need a New Rockstars [that's youtube channel] breakdown haha

Oh I found these episodes more funnier than the previous weeks. And had enough heart as well.
Though it hasn't been confirmed I'm pretty sure thats not the original Choi Se Gyeong, but her daughter. It became pretty obvious to me when she spoke of the reason why she was there, alluding to her mother's alcoholism and obsession with her. Add that on to how she's like the opposite of Se Gyeong in every other way it seemed like she too is a time traveler like Eun gyeol. Though she seems way more at ease with it than Eun Gyeol was. And that would also make sense why new se gyeong has a lot of chemistry with Eun Gyeol. Though I'm not sure why she's trying to get close to Yi Chan.
Seems like the mysterious music shop shows up when people are on the verge of giving up. For Eun Gyeol it was his treasured music. And for her..life itself? Or the thought of it. Interesting to see how this "trip" will help them to rekindle those sparks.
Oh and someone had also pointed out how Se Gyeong left in 1995 from Gimpo airpot, while new se gyeong returned to Incheon airport (which only opened in 2001). Interesting tidbit.

Thanks for the recap! I really loved this set of episodes. I'm enjoying Returned-Se-kyung (most likely her daughter from the future) just being an agent of chaos while Eun-gyeol is going nuts trying to control the chaos. Seol Inna is great at portraying the impish Sekyung.

I'm really liking how we get two couples with one being the more simple-minded wild one and the other one being the one who overthinks. I particularly love the scenes with Yi-chan and Chung-ah. There is such longing on her side, beautifully portrayed by Shin Eun-soo. And knowing that future Yi-chan will love his wife so much, I'm excited to see them interact.

Pretty sure, like most people, that new Se-kyung is also time traveling. Although, not sure how getting together with Yi-chan is going to help her. I really want more signing to happen in 1995 than I’m seeing. Why doesn’t he sign to his mom? Would his cover get blown? Would she fall in love with him instead? Talk about a nod to Back to the Future. I’ve left my husband in the dust watching this. So just giving him just the summary now. 😂

Unless I missed something, Eun-gyeol hasn’t properly met his mom, has he? He doesn’t know she’s deaf (he’s hardly even seen her) and doesn’t know she’s his mom yet.

I also got the impression that Chung-ah probably doesn’t actually know sign language yet. Her mom taught her some before she left, but clearly her new guardian did not keep up with that teaching and I wouldn’t be surprised if Chung-ah forgot what she did know if she had no one to sign to.

Oh, good points! And she did go to sign language class when his dad did, but I assumed she already knew sign language. Eun-gyeol hasn’t noticed her name tag on her uniform yet? I guess I assumed since she’s been in her uniform all this time, he would have noticed it. Well, you’re probably right there too.

yeah, he doesnt met her in the past yet. they only had brief encounters and just like yichan, he just thinks she's really quiet. if he knew this random girl was deaf, I'm sure the first thing he would think is that it was his mom. he just doesn't know it yet. I really hope this happen soon bcs he really misses his mom and more than putting her together with his dad, he just wants to see her more than anything.

Have been pondering if/how they will explain adult Yi-Chan being non-verbal. My understanding is you experience modulation issues when you go deaf, but you don't lose all capacity to speak. Yet we see he's completely non-verbal with Eun-gyeol. Understand he might not be comfortable speaking to the outer circle, but to his own son? Perhaps accident caused mutism, too.

Vocalising is a choice for the deaf person as it solely for the hearing person’s benefit. In the J drama Silence they explored this issue. They may do the same in this drama too as we saw Cheoungah can vocalise as she makes sounds when crying.

Yes, we know Cheong-ah was born deaf and has never spoken, but we have heard her vocalise sounds. Yi-Chan was verbal, but we haven't heard him utter a single word/sound as a deaf person. Fingers crossed for more of the backstory, because positive, accurate and detailed representations can help to create understanding of the Deaf experience.

Not watched Silence, gave it a miss as it was universally condemned for its portrayal of deaf people, so can't really comment on any of the storyline. I did, however, watch Coda today - highly recommend, it's near perfection. I now understand why Twinkling Watermelon is considered the Coda movie but with time travel.

I am surprised Silence was condemned as I felt it covered a range of issues within the community from the born deaf and deafened. I know the writer was concerned about the misunderstandings that could occur if it was translated into other languages but I wasn’t aware of the issues raised within the deaf community. I studied British Sign language for three years and considered going on to the degree level so I could work as a signing therapist within specialist service for deaf children and their families.

The Beanie detectives are awesome to have immediately deduced that the US returned Se-kyung is actually her future daughter traveling to the past.

I understand why the creatives did not reveal earlier that Seol In-ah would be playing a double role.

I generally avoid spoilers and just try to let the story unfold as was intended but I have to confess the intoduction and subsequent actions of Se-kyung's daughter from the future are head scratching at best and immature and selfish at worst.

Usually, in case of a mystery during future rewatches one tries to look for little clues that the writer may have woven into the narrative before the reveal. Latest example being Behind Your Touch.

In this case the introduction of this character is done in such a hodge podge and ham fisted manner that one is unsure whether the writer
- intended to reveal the identity of the person upfront, or
- just plant a little clue for discerning viewers, or
- is it supposed to still be a mystery.

Basically we don't know whether there is supposed to be a mystery or not!!

If there is no mystery it should have been stated clearly upfront.

If there is a mystery then the reveal was not done well by far.

I would be very pleased to get less of Se-kyung and her daughter and more of Eun-gyeol and his family please.

The new Se Kyung seems to be the og Se Kyung’s daughter. And I think when she says that she has come to die, she means to alter the past in such a way that her mother and father might not meet. She will simply cease to exist in the future. Maybe there is a reasoning to that 🤔
