Park Eun-bin weathers a storm in Castaway Diva

A new teaser for tvN’s upcoming rom-com Castaway Diva has washed ashore, featuring our heroine’s fish-out-of-water reactions to the unfamiliar cityscape. Better yet, we also get a glimpse of our two male leads and their (swoonworthy) attempts to help her readjust to society.

Park Eun-bin (Extraordinary Attorney Woo) stars as Seo Mok-ha, an aspiring idol whose escape from her abusive household went awry. An unforeseen storm threw her route off-course, leaving her stranded on a deserted island instead. As the teaser opens, we see a terrified Mok-ha weathering the torrential rain during her first night on the island, flinching at the roaring thunder.

Fifteen years later, Mok-ha is finally rescued. Returning to civilization at long last, Mok-ha finds herself even more adrift than before, bewildered by the unfamiliar city. We see someone slip shoes onto a pair of muddy feet, mirroring the present day, where Chae Jong-hyeop (Unlock the Boss) — playing the variety PD Kang Bo-geol — presents Mok-ha with a squeaky-clean pair of new sneakers. Notably, the worn-out trainers Mok-ha is wearing look just like the shoes in the flashback — did Bo-geol give her those, too?

Bo-geol isn’t the only one looking out for Mok-ha — his hyung Kang Woo-hak is, too. Played by Cha Hak-yeon (Joseon Attorney), the warm-hearted reporter Woo-hak finds himself wanting to protect Mok-ha. We see Woo-hak grabbing his coat and dashing out of the office without hesitation, presumably to rescue Mok-ha from whatever danger she’s facing — yet the person leading Mok-ha through the rain is wearing a different set of clothes. (Bo-geol, is that you?)

In voiceover, Bo-geol asks: is this coincidence, or fate? The teaser suggests that there’s more to Mok-ha’s past than meets the eye. A brief flashback shows a young boy tackling a man — Mok-ha’s violent father, perhaps? — as Mok-ha says, “If not for that sign, then fifteen years ago…” We close on a shot of Mok-ha, all dolled up and ready to take the stage. Our diva’s dream is finally coming true — as the poster’s tagline reads, “My dream will shine, thanks to you.”

With the team behind While You Were Sleeping and Start Up — namely, PD Oh Chung-hwan and writer Park Hye-ryun — taking the reins again alongside writer Eun Yeol, we can rest assured that we’re in good hands. Castaway Diva is slated to premiere later this month, on October 28.

Wait, this is a rom-com? thought it was going to be a slice of life or healing drama, maybe even a female focused one with the BFF.

Sorry, other guy, I believe in Chae Jong-hyeop supremacy 🙇🏾

Me too for the CJH fanclub - though I can see myself catching a bit of SLS anyway, because I did low-key with Cha Hak-yeon in Joseon Attorney even though Woo Do-hwan was the male lead 🤷‍♀️

It pains me greatly to say that as a long term fan, but I liked Hakyeon's acting career way better when he played INTERESTING supporting roles (funny sidekick, best friend with his own issues and - gasp! - love line, pitiful victim turned villain etc) instead of being just "the guy that exist in the script solely to paint FL as desirable and being rejected by her for ML". I know his few latest dramas didn't do very well, but still, it's disheartening(((

Couldn't he be PEB character's brother instead? You know, the one that she's struggling to reconnect with after 15 years of separation (caused by RAREST OF RARE for kdramas case of no birth secrets involved). THAT would've been a great subplot in what's supposed to be an uplifting healing drama about one lonely girl's journey to happiness... but nope, we're going the usual cliche romcom route where no FL can truly feel like a FL unless she has at least two devoted suitors falling to her feet. I'm not even going to end this with my usual "meh", that's a whole "angry feline hiss" at you, show!

Is it me? I think the two male actors look like they got lost on their way to a high school drama 😬

For your interest, Cha Hakyeon (SML) is 33))) Idk about ML - I'm very vaguely familiar with this actor - but he's probably younger than that.

Nah, not just you. They do look very young. Real life ages:

Chae Jong-hyeop = 30
Park Eun-bin = 31
Cha Hak-yeon = 33

And CHY is the one who looks youngest to me in those pix, but what do I know?

Wow! They really look young for their age. Good for them.

ML is a 93' liner I think, so 30? The poster esp gives a bit of School 20something vibes so I do see where you're coming from @bbstl!

Thanks you guys! We’re so used to seeing actors who look too old in high school dramas and I thought these young men would be very convincing in one!

CHY played quite a few high school roles, all way past his actual teens))) Notably CHEER UP with Jung Eunji, Lee Won Geun, Ji Soo (the guy) and Chae Soo Bin. Sorry if I misspelled any names, it's a morning here and my brain doesn't start working properly until a few hours past noon.

No you are not. They look too kiddish. I am not sure I am ready for the rom comish cross over to melo feel I am getting. I do trust Eun Bin's script choice, so I am hoing it's good, but none of the leads look suitable to her. Let's see.

This whole story is intriguing and I am really looking forward to it as it has a strong team of actors. I am most fascinated by the time frame they chose; a couple of years of isolation and limited food choices trapped on an island where no technology would be able to find you would make sense. But reintegration into society 15 years later and into the entertainment industry at that, I don’t get how they will be able to make that part of the story convincing. With no voice coaching etc over that time frame how would she be competitive against those who have been training daily from childhood? I think it’s an interesting angle to the usual rags to riches exceptionally talented unknown who makes it big when given their lucky break.
