Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching (September 16, 2023)

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

Destined With You: *taps mic* I’m fully prepared to admit: Rowoon does things to me! I thought initially it was just his character and the setup in Sunbae, Don’t Put on That Lipstick, or in The King’s Affection, but now the third time is proving it: he’s just so sincere at portraying falling in helpless, adoring love onscreen that it makes me all kinds of verklempt. As for the plot, I feel so strangely crestfallen that the spells weren’t real. Like, say what, Show? I was, and continue to be, so completely ready to suspend disbelief and believe in them… so while I’m sad, I also love how they’re playing it, and how the logic is being held a bit loosely on purpose (so maybe they’re real after all…). I’m also deeply relieved we still have half our drama to go. Because while that does mean there’s a chance for all hell to break loose, I really just want to hang out in this story for many more episodes.

My Lovely Boxer: Do you hear that sound? It’s the sound of my bean counter, and this drama swiftly collecting 90% of my 2023 beans.

Destined With You: I should not have watched Episode 8 while I was trying to go to sleep. It had my stomach in knots, checking to make sure my door was locked. On a lighter note, Episode 7 was a trove of Treasure Hunts past! We got a camping couple and then we saw our male lead realize he’s saved as Groot in our heroine’s phone, lol.

My Lovely Boxer: Lee Sang-yeob this week was just wow. “Don’t come near me. You’ll get hurt.” Man, those were some loaded words that had nothing to do with the broken glass.

A Time Called You: What the lack of logic just happened? I was so utterly addicted to the first 8 episodes but then when the real reveals started I felt like it just fell off a cliff. The pros: Rowoon’s cameo. The cons: why was it only a cameo?! I really wanted to know about the life of those characters and it didn’t make sense to me that the story didn’t go there. Overall, it seemed like a jumble when it came to deciding which storylines were important and which weren’t just so the show could be clever with the timeline. Nope, sorry, it didn’t work for me. I was more impressed with being transported back to the 90s myself with chewed-up cassettes and those little red ribbons that pop the batteries out of a tape player.

Finished What Happened to My Family. Such a funny, sad and sweet show about family love and growth. So frequently as kids we take our parents’ self sacrifice and love for granted and forget they won’t be there forever.

Now looking for help from this great community on what to download and binge for my 12 hour flight to Seoul. Coming from the US and only have Netflix and Amazon Prime for stuff to download. I do have Viki but can’t save stuff. Looking for something in the romantic comedy or good slice of life available on those 2 platforms. Do not like melodramas or open ended stories like Record of Youth. Loved Reply 1988 and Happiness. Also enjoy some cdrama like LBFD and Hidden Love.

Any ideas?

Dr Romantic S1 and 2 are downloadable from Netflix. If you like HP, these may be your thing although they are not comedic but focused on human and work relations.

Yes I did watch both and enjoyed them. I even used part of a friend’s one month free Hulu to watch the first 10 episodes of season 3 but I got cut off before I could complete it :(

On Netflix there are three classic T-drama romcoms:
LOVE YOU (real title was drunken to love you)
YOU'RE MY DESTINY and
LOVE NOW

K-drama romcoms BUSINESS PROPOSAL and LOVE TO HATE YOU.

C-drama ACCIDENTALLY IN LOVE

For slice of life, I would recommend MY UNFAMILIAR FAMILY

A special note for "LOVE YOU" (whose proper title is actually DRUNKN TO LOVE YOU"): This is one of my all-time favorite romcoms which I have re-watched more than once (and no it does not celebrate the consumption of alchohol).

I had seen “Someone like You” and was looking for other dramas starring the ML Kingone Wang. That is how I stumbled over “Love You” and well what to say … I’m still ❤️

I love K-dramas for the pretty - unbelievably good looking otp in beautiful clothes, relationship hijinks,
senic locations, tried and tested tropes,
all tied up in a pretty bow
(… please let me have HeartBeat amnesia)

The beauty of asian dramas like “Love You”, “Murphy’s Law of Love”, “I Hear You”, is the sheer depth of relationships they are willing to plumb.

I’ve been traveling a bit this week and exhausted from it, so I haven’t watched a lot of dramas.
I still haven’t finished Go Ahead. It’s a great show, well paced and fun to watch. Just a few things that bother me because I am anal and regressive. Lol.
1. The FL’s hair - couldn’t they invest in a little conditioner and maybe a curler? It took so much of the joy out of watching this show for me.
2. I found it just a little creepy seeing siblings fall in love. They aren’t real siblings but grew up together. Couldn’t wrap my mind around how they just suddenly were lovey dovey which maybe because…
3. The reasoning behind the sudden catching of love feelings seems so icky. It’s almost co-dependent. He is so clingy and needy in the later episodes. Someone who says he has no life outside of you will make me disappear so fast, lol.
4. Moms behaving soooo badly and rarely being called on it in the name of filial duty. I was so frustrated that I scratched myself raw while watching it.
I haven’t watched this week’s episodes of MLL yet.
I have also managed to control myself as far as Cinderellas of Midsummer so I will be able to watch the last 5 episodes together. Yay!!!

I hope you rest well as travelling is tiring but we are entering flu and other lurgies season that travelling can expose us to so let your immune system regroup.

Go ahead is a great drama and was my favourite until the same crew produced Meet yourself. The way I see the ‘sibling’ relationship is they are young people who spent a lot of time together because of their living arrangements and are no different to children in boarding schools or orphanages so therefore falling in love with a non related other is fine.

Good plan with Cinderellas I hope it ends well as it has been consistently good so far.

Absolutely. They are neighbors who grew up together. My problem is that there was serious brother energy. She even calls them “gege”. It was so adorable. And then all of a sudden they both fall in love with her. Neither the reasons given for the change in the relationships, nor the way the transition is shown, are convincing enough to overcome the ick factor, for me at least.
The younger one wants to marry her so he can get in the family registry!
I understand this maybe just me, but I wasn’t convinced

I checked the first episode of the new weekender, Live Your Own Life, and so far it looks like a standard weekender, with annoying relatives and plotting antagonists. So far I'm here mainly for UEE, she seems to be in her element. And she has a nice chemistry with the male lead.
@oldawyer and the weekender squad 🙂

(Will we get a new Hangout? @db-staff ?)

That was my feeling as well- fairly standard weekender so far and I think UEE and our ML do have chemistry as well, although they really have not interacted that much so far. I expected to hate all three brothers but at this point only the youngest brother is actually annoying while the other two are simply pathetic. The ML's family is set up to deliver some true makjang which is ok if done right. I recognized the actress playing the ML's evil aunt from her role in CITY HALL- she was sexy then, now she is just older, but still playing a nasty character. The best sign is that both our ML and our FL are actually likeable.

I could do with a bit less of the makjang and a bit more of nice family, but it was just a first episode, after all. 🙂
We will see how it all evolves.

Still dealing with AGE OF YOUTH withdrawals. Marathoned MOVING and it’s as good as everyone says, I’m glad I waited because I’m not sure I could deal with the suspense week to week. That said, and it’s definitely a me problem, but I’m not emotionally connecting with it. I genuinely love the parents’ and the children/teenagers’ storylines, there’s also nothing wrong with the execution either. So I’m not sure why I feel so distant, almost as if I’m an emotionless observer?

THE LITTLE MERMAID (Live-action Disney version):
Halle Bailey was fantastic as Ariel, her voice was/is lovely and I thoroughly enjoyed her performance and her scenes with prince Eric. They were cute, tho I would’ve liked more scenes with Ariel exploring and experiencing the human world. Everything else felt flat, but then again I wasn’t a fan of the Disney animated version either

THE KIDNAPPING DAY (Ep. 1-2)
I’m enjoying the fake dad and daughter duo a lot! The kidnapper and kidnappee?/abductee dynamic is fun! Seriously this sentence sounds so absurd and far-fetched doesn’t it?! Especially to a non-kdrama fan lol. Looking forward to see how they’ll manage and navigate being on the run as the police are after them now.

SURPLUS PRINCESS
A little miffed that I only had the first couple of episodes downloaded on my hard-drive, now I have to scour the dark web to get my fix 😩
A lot more risqué than I remembered tho! Loving the comedy and the parody and the absolute chaotic energy of it all!

I love Moving too, yet I also find myself not as emotionally invested. I wonder too why as well. Are there too many characters/storylines? Was it the continuity loss with all the character/time jumps? Or was it the almost anthology-like later episodes? It's curious.

A lot of real life last week, so I didn’t watch that much (or very attentively…). I’m continuing My Lovely Boxer (the expected development with SL and unexpected great acting by ML), Behind Your Touch (just to pass time), Destined with you and Moving, which I enjoy best.
There are so many more ongoing dramas, but I couldn’t decide, and so continued Hot Stove League. Isn’t it relaxing to watch a drama where you know it’s really good and will stay good until the end!
KDrama friend project: Sadly, on hiatus last week!

Hey Maisie, can you say thanks to Aidan for us? AIDAN - EVERYONE SAYS THANK YOU!
I've watched a walk-through with my brother, and our next mission is to play the game, and I'm really looking forward to it,
because the walk-through was insane. But yeah, I watch the show, I enjoy it, and
I feel like I'm a bit of a fan of the show. I was recently talking to Emilia Clarke, who's another actress
on the show, about what it was like being onstage, so yeah,
in the future, I hope that crosses my path.
So in an ideal world, yeah, the Hound is still alive, in Maisie's
opinion. Banal told reporters. "We have to be ready for Freeman's breakout game. We can't give that to him." Maybe the Aces still could, if
only they could have Adam Parada contribute the way
they want him to be. Such firs are also known to have
evolved and can effectively and efficiently handle any kind of situation without difficulties because they have seen it all
in their many years of being in that field. Ever since sports betting was legalized more than five
years ago, it seemed like that was the ultimate dream.
