Premiere Watch: Twinkling Watermelon

Time slot: Monday-Tuesday
Broadcaster: tvN
Genre: Fantasy, romance, music
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: Dramaland is so good at hijinks — especially so when it comes to family time-slip situations – and I’m expecting the same laughs and tears that we’ve gotten from thematically similar situations like in 18 Again or Go Back Spouses. In Twinkling Watermelon we have Ryeoun traveling back into ye olde 1990s where he meets his high-school-aged father (Choi Hyun-wook). There are romantic entanglements, time-slip identity confusions, high school rock bands — and, I’m sure, lots of moments that will grip our hearts as we learn about this family, who they are, and who they become.

TL;DR: Time-slip father-son hijinks, with flower boy band components

Why does the cast get less excited going from left to right?

They're foreshadowing the trajectory of the drama -- Ryeoun and Seol In-ah are the first half where it's fun and we laugh, then Shin Eun-soo is Episode 12 where the angst kicks in, and Choi Hyun-wook is the finale where we all cry our eyes out.

I had the exact same thought! Also the styling - you could split the picture in half and have two different drama genres going on hahaha, right half is giving chaebol makjang wear and left side is chic rom-com vibes 😂

I’m totally expecting to bawl my eyes out like in Go Back Couple when Ryeoun has to go back to the present and when his dad Choi Hyun-wook loses his hearing.

I believe these characters are fitting with the current theme--they are reincarnated from the 1990s. Because nobody lasts that long--at least lasts with all their faculties intact!

What do you mean old? 1990 was just 10 years ago..

Is it a typo when DB put ep 1 - 12 in the currently airing section? @db-staff

My Lovely Twinkling Watermelon is just what the doctor ordered.

Ryeoun has such a pretty smile and his face just lights up (twinkles !). Kang San (The Secret Romantic Guesthouse) bore the weight of the world on this shoulders and felt like too heavy a character for Ryeoun (rare smiles excluded).

Eun-gyeol (both Ryeoun and Jung Hyun Joon) when he plays his guitar and smiles feels like cotton candy - light, sugary and pink - makes me feel as if I am floating.

Uri Eun-gyeol has a hard life, he has to grow up faster and be more responsible than his years but he is up to it ... and the music powers him forward. I can feel how much his music influences who he is, and grows up to be.

K-dramas have the unique ability to create memorable characters who's life is propelled by their music - Hit the Top, Still 17, Do You Like Brahms, Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol, My Lovely Liar, Dream High.

I can't wait to go on this musical journey with Eun-gyeol.

Wasn't it just the best thing. It’s got Reply 1988/Hit the top vibes. I loved the way it blasted in such a powerful start to the series.

I just finished the first episode and I love it already! This OST just might need to be in my collection if it's as awesome as the first episode music was. And, since I am hearing impaired thanks to a bout with bacterial spinal meningits I am loving the sign language in it and sure hope they will continue to use it! Wish I knew sign language or rather, wish I had someone to learn it with me in my family.

I just loved the first ep. So much. I’m a sucker for an influential teacher/mentor connection - cheon Hojin is an amazing actor and he could actually play guitar which enhanced his cred - and for treating people with disabilities not as disabled but as differently abled so that their humanity doesn’t become contingent on pity or noblesse oblige.

I’m enjoying Ryeoun’s acting as he is so much more natural here than in the “Secret Romantic Guesthouse”.

watched both eps and good so far, as well as the soundtrack being excelent. It took me two watches to understand where and when the characters are, but i will say the editing was VERY clever
