News bites: September 27, 2023

  • New posters have dropped for our Castaway Diva, Park Eun-bin (Extraordinary Attorney Woo), who has been keeping busy on her stranded island and is ready to be finally rescued on October 28. Airing in tvN’s weekend slot, production for the series has PD Oh Chung-hwan (Big Mouth) at the helm with scripts by Park Hye-ryun (Start Up) and Eun Yeol. [News1]

  • MBC released more promos for A Good Day to Be a Dog, featuring our main pair Cha Eun-woo (Island) and Park Kyu-young (Celebrity) in a new poster and video teaser. Also starring Lee Hyun-woo (Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area), the fantasy romance premieres next month on October 11. [MBC]

  • Lining up her next project, Park Shin-hye (Sisyphus) has reportedly been cast in a new crime fantasy called The Judge From Hell (roughly translated). In what sounds like a meaty role, Park takes on the cold-hearted Kang Bit-na who is described to be a villain, having little compassion for perpetrators as well as victims. Production for the series is in the early stages. [Hankyung]
  • Kang Yoo-seok (Black Knight) has been added to the cast of tvN’s The Not Yet Wise Resident Life (roughly translated), joining Go Yoon-jung (Moving) in the lineup. Both are set to play first-year residents, specializing in obstetrics and gynecology. A spin-off of the Hospital Playlist series, the medical drama is expected to release in early 2024. [Osen]

  • A new batch of stills have come out for Netflix’s Doona!, focusing on our friends-to-lovers pair, Suzy (Anna) and Yang Se-jong (My Country). With PD Lee Jung-hyo (Crash Landing on You) directing and writing by Jang Yoo-ha, the romance will be coming to our screens on October 20. [News1]
  • Speaking of romance, MBC’s The Story of Park’s Marriage Contract is gearing up for its premiere as well, releasing stills from the timeslip’s first script reading. Starring Lee Se-young (The Law Cafe), Bae In-hyuk (Cheer Up), Joo Hyun-young (Behind Every Star), and Yoo Seon-ho (Under the Queen’s Umbrella), the series is slated to broadcast in November. [MBC]

Castaway Dog from Hell in a Marriage Contract sounds like a promising drama about a poor breeder who mistakenly mates his mutt with a purebred owned by a rich and beautiful heiress. Fun and hilarity will ensue as early growling gives way to loving sloppy kisses and multiple litters, both canine and human! (The show will be on Disney +)

Castaway Diva will be on Netflix officially!
While A Good Day to Be a Dog will be on Viki.

Great news, thank you! I was already searching through the upcoming shows list on Netflix and couldn’t find either. Now to invest in a Viki pass or not to invest… lol

Never regretted signing on for a VIKI pass since they have a great catalogue of older shows. If you are a fan of live watching, waiting for subs can be excruciating but the sub quality is far superior to most Netflix.
I recently tried IQIYI and was struck by the blatant "up-sell" model where you get 4 or 5 episodes and then have to join their VIP level to continue. I'll be dropping after my first month.

A Good Day to be a Dog. Kinda long!
For me I prefer Viki to Netflix. The latter has more reach, yes but Viki does a much better job on subtitles, even adding cultural and language references that Netflix never includes. For example I remember a joke about a leg cramp and a mouse, and Viki had a note that in Korean the words for cramp and mouse sound alike. Also, in my area Netflix loads slower and has more outages and issues than Viki. Frustrating when you have time to watch but Netflix is down again.

Yes, that's true. I also like how Viki translates song lyrics

Castaway Diva and A Good Day to Be a Dog look fun.

For Park Shin-hye, I'm more interested by Dr Slump for now.

I'm really not convinced by The Not Yet Wise Resident Life's idea. How it's connected to HP? It's the same hospital and there will be the same casting for the other employees than in HP 1 and 2? Or it will be completely different cast and they're juste using HP's popularity?

I'm happy to see Yang Se-jong in a new project even if I didn't specially like the first teasers...

I will test The Story of Park’s Marriage Contract. It would have be nice to see older actors with LSY.

1. Some of faves are in this, so I fully look forward to how completely unrealistic this will be

2. I am a fan of PKY and in will be interesting to see CEW in something outside of the embarrassment that was Island, lol.

3. I have missed PSH, so looking forward to her return. This will really be against type for her, so I hope she can pull it off.

4. I will watch anything from those writers.

5.Doona could be fun

6. OF course will always try a LSY drama.

I’ve a question for the Beanatariat:

Do you prefer “spin-offs” (as above with Hospital Playlist) to “second seasons” (as with, say, Hospital Playlist)?

I can't say like this.

It depends on a lot of things. But the most important if there is really a story to tell or it's just to surf on the success wave.

Yes. I prefer spinoff or anthology series more than second seasons. I think it’s a happy middle ground in that viewers get to see more story in the universe they’ve come to love (with spinoffs) or with the type of storytelling and genre they love (with anthologies) but it lets the original season stand on its own and have a complete story. Second seasons can be done well, obviously, but in my opinion they should be quite rare.

If I really really love a drama, although I'm not a fan of sequels in Dramaland, I would prefer a sequel.

If I just love a character (who could be a secondary that then becomes main character in his/her own drama), I think I wouldn't mind to watch a spin-off about him/her in a different place.

I can’t recall if I have watched a ‘spinoff’ or not but I will be definitely be watching the spinoff next year from STRANGER/FOREST OF SECRETS (Season 1: 2017) (Season 2: 2020):
TVING’s GOOD OR BAD DONG-JAE with Lee Joon-hyuk (1984) reprising his role of Prosecutor Seo Dong-jae.

Based on no real evidence other than my own memory and gut, I think spin-offs tend to be better (in terms of quality) than second seasons. That's likely because they manage to capitalize on the nostalgic affection viewers have for the first iteration, while still offering something new and fresh. Frankly, I wish more kdrama writers would create spinoffs as there are many story universes I'd love to re-visit with a new set of storylines and characters. For example, I'd rather see a "Moving" spin-off with mostly different characters and just cameos from the first season characters than a second season featuring mostly the same characters as the first.

How about a BONGSEOK ONLY spinoff. I'd watch the crap out of that one. OK, OK, Hee-soo can come along too :)

Based on everything I’ve read, this seems like the most likely outcome for Moving. The webtoon writer has lots of other in-universe stories, but hasn’t written anything else for these specific characters. I hope this is what it is too if they decide to add more!

The Beanatariat has spoken! 😅

For me it depends on the quality. I haven't been part of the Kdrama fanship for long so I don't know how they've done historically. For American movies and shows, I've seen some spin offs crash and burn and some second seasons that were created very cleverly and well, and vice versa.

The one new trend I really do NOT like is one season split into two parts. Ugh why?? Just finish it rather than releasing half of the eps at one time and the rest a few weeks/months later.

PARK'S MARRIAGE CONTRACT has some of my fave sageuk veterans, Chun Ho-jin, Jin Kyung, Kim Yeo-jin, and Lee Se-young, who have been in sageuks as a child actress. This cast is a good enough reason to check it out after MY DEAREST.
