Ji Chang-wook joins The Worst of Evil in new teaser
by Jenzy
My oh my is it hot in here? The first teaser of the Disney+ crime drama The Worst of Evil starring Ji Chang-wook (If You Wish Upon Me) and Wie Ha-joon (Little Women) is here, and it’s already delivering exactly what was promised: a gritty crime underworld, subterfuge and power machinations, and — my personal favorite — oppas in leather jackets brooding over the moral ambiguity of their actions.
The teaser opens on our hero Park Joon-mo (Ji Chang-wook) staring down the camera and deadpanning at Wie Ha-joon’s character, “Are you Jung Ki-chul?” See, Joon-mo is an undercover cop tasked with infiltrating Gangnam’s most infamous drug syndicate, and Ki-chul, being a head of said gang, is exactly the man he wants to impress. Lucky for him, after some punches thrown, Joon-mo proves his loyalty to Ki-chul, who gives him the stamp of approval: “Let him in the ranks.”
But it’s not all gang bromance and roses now he’s in, because there are a lot of people — his cop wife played by Im Se-mi (Duty After School) for example — riding on him perfectly toeing the line between investigative cop and devoted lackey. This means while at one moment he’ll take secret pictures of Ki-chul’s office when no one’s around, at another moment he’ll cheers to chummy drinks with his new “boss.”
It’s a hard balancing act, especially since the teaser shows us that amidst the sea of stylishly shot gang fights and tuxedoed men with bats (it’s all very K2-coded and I’m totally here for it), there are people suspicious of Joon-mo’s allegiances whispering into Ki-chul’s ear. This leads to the teaser’s dramatic ending where a conflicted Joon-mo holds a gun to an unseen figure while Ki-chul yells at him to shoot. How far is Joon-mo willing to go for the sake of his cover? Looks like we’ll have to find out.
Written by Jang Min-seok (Secret Reunion) and directed by Han Dong-wook (Man in Love) and Park Geun-beom, The Worst of Evil will premiere on September 27 on Disney+ and Hulu.

Can’t wait to see Ji Chang-wook in an action drama. Despite myself I did enjoy him in The Sound of Magic (Annarasumanara - the Korean title is so musical … heh!) and liked his cooking skills in If You Wish Upon Me. Action is where is first fell in love with him for (Healer … anyone). Hwaiting JCW !!

I wonder what the showrunners can do to make this stand out fron other undercover stories...
I mean, this looks fantastic and I would eat it up either way (that cast!!! That production value!!!) And would be happy with well done cliche but one cant help but wonder if there's anything more.
Only thing I could think of is the protagonist going all evil - which isn't unique for itself, but I feel KDramas shy away from unlikeable leads.
In that case "the worst of evil" is a person that chooses evil over good or give in to the allure of evil (?)

100% all over this drama now. I thought at first it was about a cop actually deciding he just wanted to be corrupt... this is much more interesting. And I've gotta love me some K2 styled action sequences.

This looks like the perfect fall watch so I'm thrilled it's on Hulu. It's also clearly highly stylized and likely to be very violent, but the direction looks confident and tight which is promising. If the writing manages to pull a "Moving" and balance out elaborate action, stunts, and gore with a character-driven story this should be really, really good. JCW and Wie Ha-joon definitely look like they're reveling in their roles!
Not sure yet about Im Se-mi's character yet--she could be pivotal to the story and written with as much complexity as I hope they are, or she could be just a cipher. I'm trying not to get my hopes up, but am definitely excited to see how this turns out.

The parallels to Moving were striking (get what I did there?) to me as well. I do very much hope that I don't end up being so overwhelmed by the violence I assume is coming in the final episodes of Moving to be interested in watching this here drama...I would love dearly to have the bandwidth to (possibly) see Ji Chang-wook shine.

I was hoping that we'll have a korean adaptation of the Hong Kong movie 'Infernal Affairs' which starred Tony Leung. this is partially it! Love JCW in action.
