I'm more noticing the 3.6% for New Recruit. That's quite impressive for ENA (and they are surpassing most of the shows on Mo-Thu). Anyone watching?

The new weekender will climb, because.... Grandma has escaped!!! 😉

Where is "New Recruit" being shown? I do not see any online buzz regarding it.

Sadly, neither season has been picked up by an international streaming service. I’m so curious about it!

At least DWY and ARTHDAL are going steady. Latter's episodes are finally here subbed, yay, so gonna binge all of them later today to bask in the double dose of LJG)))

Btw, there's a talk here and there about DOCTOR SLUMP finally dropping mid-October. Let's see whether it's true and if so, will this show be able to make another big splash in JTBC romcom pool.

Would they do that to the SWDBS spin-off, you think? I can only imagine that there would be a slim chance that the two shows would support one another…

Fair enough. I've always been under impression that DS was supposed to directly follow the spin-off, with PHS's cameo in the latter being some sort of preview for the former, so ofc they won't premier simultaneously. Then again, DS is a much bigger project, so I can totally see the channel not keeping it on the shelves just for the sake of spin-off no one really asked for to begin with. Guess it depends the most on timeslot. Different reports also push it back all the way to 2024... Only time will tell.

I read DWY is doing quite well on Netflix. Surprisingly, more than A Time Called You. I know that has no bearing on Korean ratings, but must have some positive impact for drama overall.

At this point I'm certain that Netflix only buys romance kdramas that they KNOW will do well... and hardly misfire at that. Good for the show. As for lukewarm response from local audience - it was expected, no? These days it takes multiple HUGE stars (and insane promotional budget) to make a drama of this genre hit in SK.

IMO above 3 should be fine, but never expected below 3 for DWY…I have been following N-talk, most of them are surprised by low ratings…this genre with rom com at that time is giving big negative effect in local ratings..

N-talk? Never heard about that one. Can you pls share a link?

DWY deserves better for sure, first 6 episodes were really nice in old school k-romance kinda way, which is something you'd think a picky local audience would appreciate.

@gikata This year no weekday show made it past 3 if I am not wrong. Most of them did well on OTT though.

Why do you think romcoms aren't doing well?

1

Because they weren't for ages. Few romcoms that were hits it the last years all had star packed cast and insane hype around the fact. Gone are the days when anything romance with a young pretty OTP was enough to bring ratings, nowadays the genre is stagnating painfully. All the above are related to TV only, ofc, many of them still do well at streaming since that's where their target audience largely moved.

2

Chincha??? OMG, October is going to kill me. How come they have not dropped even a poster on it? PHS didn't mention anything about it in his Fan meet, which I found surprising (though I could be wrong).
I wonder how big of a cameo in the spin-off, though it is. The OG have the power to sideline the new couple, so it's a gamble they have taken. As it is, it neither looks nor sounds exciting. I guess they hope to draw the original crowd and pray for the rest.

Same rumor claimed that we'll get some promos this week, but nothing so far so... I guess next year is more likely at this stage. PHS may not know himself when it's gonna air, post-pandemic drama scheduling has been a huge mess overall.

I doubt the cameo is gonna be big, few minutes at most and likely unimportant plot-wise. Drawing the original crowd is largely impossible at this stage since "rom" part is clearly not gonna be highlight in spin-off - show's obviously banking on "family girl power" and sexy antagonist while nominal ML is barely seen in promos at all. Perhaps there's even going to be some tension between FL and bad guy hottie, otherwise why focusing so much at his attractiveness?

You have a point, though I did read somewhere that both had commented their role was bigger than they expected and it was 'too much' and wished it was shorter. No idea though what they meant by it.
I have not watched the new trailer with the baddie, need to check it out.
While initially watching SWDBS I had felt it was not really centered on romance, and it was more com than rom. I think the PHS magic turned it on its head. When the rom amped up to an infinite degree by 8th episode, I was taken by complete surprise. It could be that they ae trying something new in this series and keeping it under wraps.

For me this is the best drama currently airing. It has the most coherent and logical plot of any drama I've seen this year. Probably because it is based on an award-winning book.

KBS’s MY LOVELY BOXER (Viki US) ratings perspective.
I recall that after MBC’s I AM NOT A ROBOT (2017/18) (Viki US) aired Yoo Seung-ho gave a very interesting interview to discuss the drama and its poor ratings (for the time). INAR’s average nationwide Nielsen rating was 3.2%. He was shocked at first at the poor ratings. To lighten things up on the set he said:

“We joked amongst ourselves, ‘A three percent viewership rating really means viewers with the top three percent taste.'”

Here is my source. It shows what a classy guy YSH is:
https://www.soompi.com/article/1118415wpp/yoo-seung-ho-shares-honest-thoughts-low-viewership-ratings-not-robot
INAR continues to be a beanie favorite. i’m
I personally thought INAR’s poor ratings were related to how negatively the main characters were introduced in the first few episodes but that is a personal opinion.

Where am I going with this for MY LOVELY BOXER. Just take YSH’s quote above and replace ‘three percent’ with ‘one percent’.
I have been traveling for the last three weeks and will begin MLB full catch up mode today beginning at episode 3.
Just what I saw of Lee Sang-yeob’s performance as Tae-young in the first 2 episodes leads me to believe this is the best performance I have seen him give.

For those watching My Lovely Boxer: would you recommend that someone like myself who watched the first episode and did not like it revisit the show? Or is the first episode a good gauge of how I might enjoy it and I shouldn’t bother?

I’ve seen people watching it really enjoying it and I’m wondering if I should give it another go. Also, the OST is amazing.

I hesitate to analyze why My Lovely Boxer isn’t doing well because I know how much it hurts when someone criticizes a show that you really love – and some people really love this show.
With that said – stop reading if you love My Lovely Boxer.
I’m still watching this show and I do enjoy it, but it does have it’s faults.
My lovely Boxer started with ratings around 2%. The first two episodes focused too much on the baseball backstory. This is called My Lovely Boxer, not “My Lovely Brother from Another Mother Over the Hill Baseball Player.” From the start, the ML is a manipulative bully and despite some moments of empathy towards him, it does not negate the fact that he doesn’t take “No” as an answer from the FL. He forces her out of her desire to remain hidden, publicly exposes her whereabouts to the press, and forces her to quit a job (kindergarten teacher) that she loves. Between those two events that happened early in the show – I can see why a lot of people dropped the show – and it looks like they lost ½ the original audience after the premier. I kept watching hoping for a character arch of redemption and to watch the Boxing spectacle that is a cornerstone of sports dramas. The remaining episodes do get better.
This brings us to the Boxing Spectacle. This was touted as a sports show. One comparison I have ingrained in my memory is Twenty Five Twenty One which is about fencing – another sports focused drama on a sport that I care little about. That show did an amazing job with the fencing SPECTACLE. I remember the scene of Na Hee-Do’s first big tournament. She walks into a dark room. “Boom” all the lights turn on. The camera is focused on her alone walking on the fencing runway. I get chills remembering that scene and it’s been 1.5 years since I watched that scene. Compare that with the first Boxing match in My Lovely Boxer. I don’t remember any spectacle about it despite watching this 1.5 weeks ago. In Twenty Five Twenty One, that first match felt real. The anxiety, the stress, the strategy, and the heroics. In My Lovely Boxer, the first half of the match looks like the FL doesn’t even know how to box and the tonal shift of how she won the match was jarring. The only advice the agent/trainer could say was “Don’t get hit”. Duh – eyeroll. So much for a boxing prodigy. The entire boxing thing is just not believable. Didn’t the director at least watch Rocky to see why that dumb but full of heart movie succeeded.
Then there is the component of working hard. In Twenty Five Twenty One, we are shown that behind the glory was years of hard work and determination. It had the best depiction of the characters sweating. In My Lovely Boxer, it’s mostly morning runs with her not an athlete agent. They run at such a leisurely pace that they can talk normally and the highlight is getting candy from the old couple or getting donuts.
The only thing that My Lovely Boxer has going for it is the human element in the FL,...

People who are looking for a straight-up romance will be disappointed, but I think the show is doing a surprisingly good job at juggling all of the above, especially this weekend, which is why it’s getting viewers. It’s a ludicrous premise and blend of genres but they’re actually pulling it off quite well.

The relationship between the leads was never going to be some fiery, passionate romance, and I find the route the show went with the human connection and communication element of it all between two extremely opposite people was very well done. Nothing else would have felt organic or earned to me considering how they started off. Will they kiss by the end? I dunno, but that’s kind of beside the point for me with this show.

As I'm watching it, I'm often thinking "this is so dumb" but then I can't stop watching it haha
There's this level of absurdity that makes things work and then the moments of "reality" or a realistic/probable result happens, it highlights it.
And as you said, the mystery is intriguing.

The romance actually is the biggest complaint in Behind your touch. I don't think they will make a big improvement in the last 4 episodes. It is the murder mystery and the good cast and acting overall that sustains the drama. And I can also say they are lucky as their biggest competition in dramas already ended. I hope they will hit double digits in the last episodes.

I'd be very intereted to hear more of your thoughts!!

I find the romantic premise too uncomfortable at a time of very public resistance around the world by female athletes against the older men that hold power over them.

Required fields are marked *

Got it. This is a large part of my reasoning for waiting to see how the show works these topics out--but I also do wonder why this precise topic...when you could be talking about anything...

1

Given the widespread revelations around the globe, I believe this is a systemic problem female athletes face. When in reality these relationships are often problematic, that we once again have another romantic *exception* depicted on screen troubles me.

In my country, we have a lot of female athletes bravely standing up to these men, and they are being crushed. Who is going to believe them if the media narrative keeps selling the romance between the ahjussis-in-charge and the young women?

But I get it. If you're not actively involved in the issue, it might not be as troubling. I have a lawyer friend who specializes in sexual harassment, and she just can't watch workplace romances between a higher-up and subordinate, no matter how well done. But I can. So we all have different triggers and tolerances.

10

Sorry. I think our messages crossed. I don't think I understand the last part of your comment. But perhaps I answered it inadvertently.

1

"we all have different triggers and tolerances"

Great point! And I actually didn't consider the female athlete/manager or whatever angle of My Lovely Boxer so it's interesting to consider.

When something gives us the ick in media, I think a lot of us have this knee-jerk reaction to moralize it absolutely and think that others should agree with us because we see it as a moral stance. I've been guilty of it. But really, so many things about our lives and our experiences affect how we personally view art and media, for better and for worse, and it's important to realize that it differs from person to person. Whether something bothers us and how much it bothers us or takes us away from the rest of the story is very personal. I find many things that other people love distasteful and many people find what I love distasteful! Lol. And I think that's what makes life fun. :P

5

@indyfan I should clarify, but, yes, I feel you also did respond to my meaning.

I meant, I was giving MLB the benefit of the doubt that they could deal with the particularly topical and sensitive topic of gender and power in sports in a productive manner.

I also feel I might better understand (and perhaps also now share) your position which is something close to this: MLB has already caused the damage by not highlighting the systemic problem, but instead highlighting a possibly exceptional time when "it might be OK to treat female athletes this way because it works out in the end."

I understand you to be saying that this is a dangerous message, and I agree wholeheartedly.

1

@attiton It also made me think of your post about centering male trauma, and generally male arcs, in many kdramas. Even more than DWY, I see it happening in MLL as well as MLB. (Is this a sign to avoid any dramas that begin with My Lovely...?)

While IRL, we have female athletes saying listen to our stories, listen to our traumas, we begin this drama with a male lead who manhandles, stalks, doxxes, and ultimately makes the female lose her job so she's cornered into a contract with him. Don't get me wrong, I love a gray character and their growth arc, but I just wasn't comfortable with this one that parallels so many awful real life behaviors and his redemption when we could have so easily centered MLB around our female boxer.

Despite its flaws, 20 years ago Million Dollar Baby did right by both the boxing and its female boxers. And just this year, Revenant had a beautiful relationship between a young woman and her older mentor, but it remained very much her story. It's possible.

6

Thank you for all these additional thoughts, @indyfan. I very much appreciate your insights, and you’ve changed the way I think about this drama. I may want to watch a bit to experience what you’re describing, but I won’t hold it in my mind the same way as I would have before you contributed these ideas and experiences.

2

I don't think it's better but just different.

First, nothing relating to sport is credible whether it's the actresses, their physique, the trainer, the fights... So you need to ignore a big part to enjoy the show. The acting is good for the leads and their bickering is funny. The mob part doesn't interest me... This drama is pretty simple in its locations and its direction. I like when the story focus on the feelings of the different sportwomen.

I like both shows, and think they should be pulling in higher numbers than they are. But whereas DWY is arguably doing as well as most other romcoms have this year, MLB, a more layered and complex drama that could appeal to those who like all sorts of different genres, is failing to even manage a 2% share. I understand as @indyfan and others have pointed out that the romantic premise may be a turnoff for both potential and actual viewers, but in execution, like everything else about the show, I think it's well done. Would love to know what you think @seon-ha if/when you binge it.

BEHIND YOUR TOUCH has seen steady good ratings the entire time.

We are still in the introductory episodes of LIVE YOUR OWN LIFE. Our ML and FL have met with the ML's cousin clearly designated as the 2ML- who already has a crush on our FL. And, as Dorotka has pointed out: Grandma has escaped from her durance vile! The initial low ratings for a Weekender belie the fact that we have already launched into the story proper. Ratings should pick up.
