When you meet your teenage dad in Twinkling Watermelon

A new teaser has arrived for tvN’s Twinkling Watermelon (previously Sparkling Watermelon), revealing a little more about our fantasy story and the cute shenanigans that entangle the leads: Ryeoun (The Secret Romantic Guesthouse), Choi Hyun-wook (D.P. 2), Seol In-ah (Oasis), and Shin Eun-soo (Summer Strike).

It seems there was one eerie, foggy night when two moons shared the night sky. This is the day that our hero Eun-gyeol (Ryeoun) discovers a strange music store standing in the distance and the teaser’s text screens explain: “I crash landed into a world that I don’t know.”

When Eun-gyeol leaves the store, he’s taken aback by his changed surroundings and a newspaper confirms the shocking truth that he’s traveled back in time to April 1995. Here, he meets the young Yi-chan (Choi Hyun-wook) who spiritedly introduces himself and Eun-gyeol grabs him in disbelief: “Dad?!” A flummoxed Yi-chan replies, “Probably not.”

In the intermittent text screens, we read more of Eun-gyeol’s confused thoughts: “My dad appeared before me? Will I be able to return?” We then jump back to a frustrated Yi-chan who demands to know who Eun-gyeol really is, adding offhand: “Are you from the future or something?”

As we come to a close, we finally get a quick glimpse of our ladies, Se-kyung (Seol In-ah) and Chung-ah (Shin Eun-soo). The teaser then ends as Eun-gyeol reassures himself that there must be a way for him to go back to the present.

Co-directed by PD Sohn Jung-hyun (Mental Coach Jegal) and PD Yoo Beom-sang, with scripts penned by Jin Soo-wan (Chicago Typewriter), tvN’s Twinkling Watermelon premieres next month on September 25.

What I believe is going to be the plot of the show:

- Ryeoun grows up as a CODA (child of deaf adults) and pursues music as a passion secretly to avoid offending his parents (his dad in particular is skittish whenever the topic of music is brought up)
- Ryeoun discovers the store and time travels back (for real)
- Ryeoun runs into his parents, Choi Hyun Wook and Shin Eun Soo
- Ryeoun is shocked that his dad was not hearing impaired and was even a musician, but is quickly glad to be able to bond with his dad through music
- Choi Hyun Wook has a crush on Seol In Ah in the past, though he eventually goes on to marry Shin Eun Soo (since he's not hearing impaired then, my guess is that he rescues Shin Eun Soo from a Truck of Doom and loses his hearing as a result)
- Unwittingly, Ryeoun ends up as the one to save his young mother instead of his young dad, triggering the grandfather paradox and becoming at risk of erasing his own existence (since that accident was his parents' meet-cute moment)
- Ryeoun now has to do stuff in order to get his parents together, such as 1) pretending to woo Seol In Ah and getting involved in a love triangle with his young dad (hence causing a fistfight), 2) trying to prevent his young mother from falling in love with him (because of the accident) and pairing her with his dad
- This doesn't go well as 1) Ryeoun falls in love in Seol In Ah for real, leaving him conflicted when time is up to head back to his own timeline, 2) Choi Hyun Wook is no longer hearing impaired and doesn't have enough in common ground with Shin Eun Soo to fall in love with her
- DRAMA

Ok, I think I might have plagiarised too much from Back to the Future, haha. But to be honest, I hope the show doesn't go along this path, because I would like to be happily surprised with a fresh time-travelling/time-slipping narrative.

There's just too much stuff that could go wrong here - from channel to premise - and almost certainly will. Nope.

This one looks so fun and I sure hope it is. Please don't get too bogged down in an emotional roller coaster sort of ride and just have fun with the story!

Given Choi Hyun-wook's filmography, I trust that he has a good eye for dramas. Definitely looking forward to seeing his charms on display in "Sparkling Watermelon"~!

Choi Hyun-Wook must have been held back in high school 4x already. Every show that I've seen him in from Twenty Five Twenty One, Racket Boys, Weak Class Hero he's stuck in school.
Heck, he even in the music video in New Jeans Ditto as a high school boy.
At least he can recycle his wardrobe for each role.
When will this guy graduate?
