Ji Chang-wook vs. Wie Ha-joon in The Worst of Evil

As if the thought of Ji Chang-wook (If You Wish Upon Me) and Wie Ha-joon (Little Women) headlining a drama together wasn’t enough to whet our appetites, Disney+ has dropped a fresh set of stills for their upcoming crime-action noir The Worst of Evil to make sure that happens.

In the drama, police officer Park Joon-mo (Ji Chang-wook) goes deep into the 1990s Gangnam underbelly to infiltrate a crime syndicate. While on the job, he gets entangled with a mob boss who has been quickly rising in the ranks: Jung Ki-chul (Wie Ha-joon). But it doesn’t seem as easy as getting in, getting intel, and getting out, as the story promises a complex look at Joon-mo’s character as he changes as a consequence of his cover.

The PD promises some deep, dark acting from Ji Chang-wook, and this is me wondering if the depths of this character are what lured Wookie back to the action genre (because let’s face it — he didn’t do it just because I’ve been begging). Wie Ha-joon’s character also sounds equally layered, with a brutal backstory and single-minded determination that has enabled him to get to where he is. And while we know these two leads will have some complicated interactions within the crime ring, it gets even more complicated with… a love triangle?

Our female lead is Im Se-mi (Duty After School), playing police officer Yoo Eui-jung. She’s married to Joon-mo, but she’s also noted as Ki-chul’s first love. So that could get interesting fast — with her husband undercover in the very drug trafficking ring she’s working to take down, and the man in charge being a sworn enemy who actually loved (loves?) her. Oh boy, I’m getting Heartless City vibes now, and that’s a good thing.

With filmmaker Han Dong-wook (Man in Love) and PD Park Geun-beom directing, and scripts by Jang Min-seok (Secret Reunion), Disney+’s The Worst of Evil will be launching on September 27.

I feel like Disney + is stepping up their K drama game. If there is a war between Disney and Netflix, I'll be the war greatest spectator 😂

while i've been Ji Chang Wook averse in the past several years (actually anything after Healer), i might have to watch this one since he's not trying to be "cute". added plus is Wie Ha Joon... he's very classically handsome.

Not saying this is the best or most reputable streaming option around, but if needs be, Dramac**l (any of the 2 billion domains they seem to use) can provide fast and very decent subtitled episodes... But if someone asks, shhhh, you didn't hear it from me.

Alas, I can only look on from the sidelines and sigh. Disney+ makes watching a no go for me.

A little JCW exercise. Compare the image of JCW in his mid-twenties at the top (the iconic blue, white, red DramaBeans image) with the image of JCW in his mid-thirties in the first pic of the post. To me he looks a little older but certainly not bad lol.

Men need to develop flavor. This ajumma doesn't even look at boys under 30 anymore who haven't been in the military.

Ha-ha. I'm really loving a new-to-me actor on a current drama. But all of his other dramas are high-school ones. *Gulp* I can't.

Now I know what to do. Catch him when he returns from the military minus some baby fat. 😂

Oh wow…who could this be…I’m so intrigued…

@attiton Oh you know this sad eyed 2ML. But you are too busy perusing the waterbed catalog to properly fall for his charms. 😀

3

@indyfan Oh, ah. SLS is a painful, painful condition, I hear. I’ve never had it, myself…

2

@attiton And I—to borrow a line from someone—don't have SLS, I just want him for myself to finish his military service.

4

Have you checked to see if he hasn’t already completed his military service.

You never know, for example:
Jang Dong-yoon (great in KBS’s OASIS this year) was 19 when he entered the military. He was around age 24 when he was cast as a high school kid in JTBC’s SOLOMON’S PERJURY(2016/17) (5 stars!). In 2018 he went on to play a high school kid again in KBS’s JUST DANCE.

5

Thanks @marcusnyc20 I was mostly joking. It's this running 2ML joke from HeartBeat.

But now that you mentioned it, I did check. And nothing on his Wiki page at least. I will find a way, somehow, to survive. 😀

Have you seen Leo on my wall? That boy is such a baby that his old works are literally kids roles.

The thing that would make him age faster is his smoking habit.

I feel the same about D+ so I can only hope Hulu will have it also or it's the dark side for me. It sounds too good to miss out on.

Hulu back in 2015/16 was my introduction to english subbed asian dramas. My first subbed asian dramas were not kdramas but Hong Kong TVB cop shows: LIVES OF OMISSION (2011), HIGHS AND LOWS (2012), E.U. (2009), TIGER CUBS (2012) and LINE WALKER (2014). I loved them. I had visited Hong Kong in 2015 and these shows were a way to return vicariously to HK. At some time in early 2016 on Hulu KBS’s HEALER caught my eye and the rest is history. Also at some point in 2016 from what recall a lot of the kdrama content on Hulu disappeared. I emailed Hulu and asked basically, “where did all the korean dramas go?”. I did get a rely along the lines: ‘with licensing dramas come and go’. So I said to myself, well Hulu can go. I eventually cancelled my subscription and in April of 2016 I subscribed to Viki. In March of 2017 I subscribed to DramaFever (RIP). To make a long story longer that experience with Hulu left a sour taste in my mouth and I really don’t care to return there.

I am not familiar at all with the previous work of the team behind the camera, and one can never be sure before it airs if Hulu will carry this, but those concerns aside, I'm excited for this. I'm not sure if I know the actress playing the FL, but this is the kind of angsty love triangle I can get behind. And I love to see JCW in a potentially layered role like this, possibly playing against type at least a little bit. All that matters is the execution, but if this could be another "Moving" or "Call it Love," I'd take back all the things I said at the beginning of 2023 about this being a particularly weak year for kdramas.

@missvictrix A shout out to Heartless City! I'm getting similar vibes and I loved that intense layered show so my hope is for another gritty, intense, engaging show that shows off the actors acting. So happy for Ji Chang-wook and Wie Ha-joon in a "show us what you got" (that we already know you have) acting and a good story to grab us in.

I'm not sure I can root against Wie Ha-joon. This may be too difficult for me. Not that it matters since it's on Disney+ anyway, lol.

Looking foward to this.

I hope they'll go off the deep end to a point where everyone is morally grey and there is no "good" or "bad side"; the ML seems like he'd go through some sort of curroption arc and I'm here for it.

Also, I'm surprisingly excited for the love triangle.

All in all, I hope for a show where I could condone none of the actions irl but enjoy them on screen.

It did sound familiar and thank you, it is giving major Heartless City vibes! This might just be the final push to get a trial subscription to a certain streaming service. Jjang!

Can’t wait for this one. To see Ji Chang Wook in a dark role will be great. A side of Wei Ha Joon will make this a great drama.
