Eom Ki-joon masterminds SBS’s Escape of the Seven
by tccolb
After being in production for what seems like forever, the promo train has finally taken off with the first script reading stills for SBS’s anticipated makjang of the year, Escape of the Seven.
Brought to us by the makjang hitmakers who created An Empress’s Dignity as well as the Penthouse trilogy, I expect we’re in for another cracktastic ride with a missing girl at the center of our story and seven twisted characters who are linked to the crime.
But a makjang story would be flavorless without that dash of revenge, and the man who is targeting the seven in question is Eom Ki-joon (Little Women), who takes on the role of the ~mysterious~ tech CEO Matthew Lee.
Also a CEO is Hwang Jung-eum’s (Men Are Men) Geum Ra-hee who runs a drama production company. Valuing money above all else, she’s pushed to search for the daughter she abandoned 15 years ago when a lofty inheritance is at stake.
In contrast, Lee Joon’s (Red Heart) Min Do-hyuk comes from a humble background and has a gruff exterior. But on the inside, he’s actually warm-hearted and is all about loyalty, despite the many betrayals he’s faced in his life.
Lee Yubi (Yumi’s Cells 2) plays the seemingly perfect Han Mo-nae, boasting talent, beauty, and wealth. But her life in the castle has been precariously built on lies and is constantly in danger of crumbling away like sand.
With a large ensemble cast, we also have gynecologist Shin Eun-kyung (Penthouse 3) who is married for money to the rich chairman Lee Deok-hwa (Stealer: The Treasure Keeper).
In addition, we have talent agency CEO Yoon Jong-hoon (Shooting Stars), art instructor Jo Yoon-hee (Beautiful Love, Wonderful Life), and police detective Jo Jae-yoon (Alchemy of Souls).
With PD Joo Dong-min at the helm and scripts penned by Kim Soon-ok, SBS’s Escape of the Seven is slated to premiere this September, following The First Responders 2 in the weekend slot.

Can I say I'm a bit calmed that Eom Ki-joon is the one targeting the seven and not one of the targeted.

Hm, there are 2 possible scenarios :
- The 7 people are actually not bad people, so in this case, UKJ's character is the psychopath who targets them - so it's actually unjustified revenge and more akin to terror.
- UKJ's character is being wronged/aggrieved by these 7 people. Those 7 people are actually human trash, and UKJ's character wants to take revenge on them.
Both scenarios actually possible, since this is Kim Soon-Ok's work. In her Kdrama world, it is quite common to have a bunch of evil people going against each other.

I was unable to finish both Empress Dignity and the Penthouse series, but I will give this a try. I miss Hwang Jung Eum on my screen.

Talking about Eom KI-joon, I’ve been watching on YT in the past week or so the clips from his musical “The Days” which is currently in Seoul Theatre. He together with Oh Man-Seok and Yoo Joon-Jang alternates the lead role which they have done before. Great to see them all in top form.
This is the 10th anniversary of this musical. Ji Chang-work’s fan can also check it out as he reprises his 2ML role.

Oh, Man Seok is the crown prince of musical theatre. He stood out here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgpowKAmRq0&list=PLE7FA3C65E09EB616&index=22&ab_channel=OpenReview
The leading men of musical theatres are equally impressive on screen. That needs to be a never-ending trend instead of, you know, the current trend of young inexperienced leads from the other side of music.
One of my favorite Eom Ki-joon roles is Maxim de Winter in REBBECA and Edmond Dantès in COUNT of MONTE CRISTO. I think he's done with "Jack the Ripper, " so he's back in dramaland.

It’s quite unfortunate that Oh Man Seok is now relegated to mostly villain role although he still shines brightly (eg the lead villain in Crash Landing On You) or in supporting role like the music teacher in What’s Up.
I gather Kdramas benefit a lot from all these well-trained and experienced stage actors that give us joy in watching their performance. It never ceases to amaze me in watching the K musical clips to realise so many ahjusshi’s, cops and mundane colleagues or neighbours we see in dramas come from a musical background.

I noticed Cho Seung-woo would have his musical buddies join him in some of his dramas.

I felt Kim Soon-Ok's brand of makjang becoming darker and darker from The Last Empress into Penthouse and finally this one, evolving from a simple revenge x affair type of story and veering further into thriller x makjang genre.
This is not exactly new, since there have been lots of thriller-makjang genre combinations in the last few years like Blind, Mouse, Flower of Evil ... Doctor Prisoner, or ... Return.
Hwang Jung Eum with her screaming skills seems like the right casting to have in her makjang drama (I need to turn down my TV volume when watching both Last Empress and especially Penthouse), and it's there in the trailer as well ....

Given his track record, I'm going to go with, "no". He does the whole evil/villain thing so well, though.
